Collaborative Education

Hello,

I am trying to publish an article about "Collaborative Evaluation." It has not been accepted because the sources are not reliable. The sources included in the article are books and journal articles that can be verified. Therefore, I don't know what I can do to edit my article and make it publishable. Thanks, Connie Walker — Preceding unsigned comment added by Conniewalkeregea (talkcontribs) 12:47, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I will respond at the thread you started at Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk#Help with article sources. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:05, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

thank you Sir David.

please Sir David.--^^^^ 20:10, 29 September 2013 (UTC) kirikiri town is a small town in Lagos Nigeria. sir my references are only a few news and happenings in and around town which were covered by various Nigerian newspapers. sir, i want to be the creator of this article concerning kirikiri town and to write subsequent books on its history. please assist me, and teach me how to make it better. thank you sir David. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fedricx (talkcontribs) 20:10, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Fedricx:
If you have not read Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything please read them. Those two pages and the pages that they link to will answer many of your questions.
As for your submission, Wikipedia_talk:Articles for creation/Kirikiri:
In general, news of purely local interest isn't going to be appropriate content for an article. Most articles about cities this size just contain basic information about the city's location, government, circumstances of its founding, and maybe a very brief listing of the most important high schools and colleges, major hospitals, major tourist attractions, and major historical events. They also wikilink to other Wikipedia pages such as their parent government (e.g. Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, and Nigeria, among others. If you try to wikilink something and the link shows up as red instead of blue or purple, it means that there is no article by that name. The topic may be under a different name or it may not exist. If it exists under a different name, you can use a "piped link" as shown in Help:Link#Piped link If the article does not exist, in most cases you should remove the square-brackets from around the word and the word will go back to normal, black, text.
When you have addressed all of the issues that myself and other reviewers have raised, you can click on the blue "resubmit" button in one of the pink "decline" boxes at the top of your article and your submission will be added back into the queue. The current backlog is about 4 weeks, but thanks to a concerted effort to clear articles out of the queue, I would expect any submission made in the next few days to be reviewed in 2-4 weeks. Sometimes reviewers will review pages out of order. That is what happened when I reviewed your article only 4 days after another reviewer declined it and reviewed it again on the very same day.
I am busy with a few other tasks at the moment and I won't be able to give you the help you deserve. I hope others at the places I listed below can give you the help you need.
The best places to get the help you want are:
  • The Articles for creation Help Desk, Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk. This is the first place I would go for this specific topic or any other specific page you submitted for review under the "Articles for creation" process.
  • The Wikipedia Teahouse, Wikipedia:Teahouse. This is a general place for brand-new editors to get general help about Wikipedia.
  • The talk page for WikiProject Africa, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa. Like most WikiProjects, this page is mostly watched by experienced editors and they may not be used to helping newcomers. Please explain that you are new and be patient with them if they assume you know things about how Wikipedia works that you haven't learned yet. However, this page is the best place to go for questions specific to existing or future articles about Africa and places, things, and people in Africa.

Slkfa (talk) 17:55, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

hello, since the kwame yeboah (musician) page is the first page i ever contributed, pls excuse any beginners mistakes i may make. now said that "This article contains wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information." pls give me more information as to what wording it is you find promotional so i can look it over. i simply tried to get info on the musician from different websites and since copy/paste is not accepted, tried to change it a bit but not go too far from the original wording. also it seems you hve deleted external links. since my two favourite musicians at the time are raul midon and kwame yeboah, the former already having a wikipedia page, i tried to design kwame yeboahs page after raul midons. since that page has more than one external link, i think the same should be permissable for the page i created and i will add the links again. i hope you find that understandable. inline citations i added. cheers.

Slkfa (talk) 17:55, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Note to self: See Kwame Yeboah (musician) and Raul Midón. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:52, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Words and phrases like "legendary," "all over the world," "has never abandoned" (or "has never"/"always" anything else), and "renowned" give a sense of non-biasness. In general, if a Wikipedia article is written in a way that leaves a reader who has never heard of the subject before with either a distinctly favorable or distinctly non-favorable opinion of the subject, it needs to be re-written. A well-written article about a musician should leave someone who has never heard of that musician thinking "okay, yet another musician from 'insert country here' with 'insert style here' who played in 'insert years actively singing here' who was recognized for 'insert well-known awards here' without thinking that this particular musician is any better or worse than another musician with a similar resume who the reader also had never heard of. You may want to read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch, especially the section titled "Puffery."
Thanks for the heads-up on Raul Midón, I've removed some of the external links.  :davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:22, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Slkfa (talk) 07:59, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
thank you for your input. i had taken the wording off the referenced websites not feeling comfortable enough to just make up a text on my own. i changed the wording now and i hope it fits wikipedia standards. please look it over when you get a chance. cheers.

Redirects

Redirects from User:username or User:username/sandbox to AfC are generally accepted for new users who had no other userpage content and are unlikely to have any (i.e. most cases), as far as I've seen. But you left a note so it's okay :) ~Charmlet -talk- 03:30, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

User:Username/sandbox or User:Username/subpage, yes, but User:Username is special. It's confusing to the point of disruptive for someone to click on someone's name in their signature (or in a ping or similar template) and land on a page that is not the user's main page. You might say "it breaks the wiki," albeit from a user-expectation rather than a technical perspective. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:48, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Point taken, a soft redirect may still be appropriate though (for the user whose draft it is). I'll start taking that approach. ~Charmlet -talk- 03:58, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for fixing my screw-up. I have removed the warning from the other editor's talk page and apologized.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:56, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Rent My Vacation Home

This article may require copy editing for grammar.
Update has been done (October 2013)
This article needs additional citations for verification.
Update: The verifications used are used in other Wikipedia articles (October 2013)
The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for companies and organizations.
Update: The competitive chart shows the same vacation rental companies with fewer offices are listed in Wikipedia. (October 2013)

Update References contained now are not all press release but that is what is mainly available for references if anyone has information to show any of the references are false please list them here instead of opinions about the information or what someone may think is true or false.

Update References in the articles were used in other vacation rental industry Wikipedia articles. Also edited grammar and removed some references. References written by public relations. Jayfrankauthor 05:00, 9 October 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jayfrankauthor (talkcontribs)

Some comments:
  • The articles about the competing companies are in sad shape and are vulnerable to being deleted through WP:Articles for deletion.
  • It is okay to use primary sources but only AFTER non-primary, reliable sources that provide significant coverage have been used to demonstrate the topic's notability. Even then, they should only be used to back up facts, not opinions. In other words, if you take out everything that is backed up by a primary source such as the company web site or a press release, the bits that are left should still be enough to demonstrate that the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Once this is done, you can add in other material that is backed by sources such as company publications.
  • Notability is not based on how many customers you have, it's based on whether the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. A company with lots of customers that has been "quiet" may have very little coverage. Likewise, a company that has been very "loud" in the press, issuing press releases every week, may not have much independent coverage because news outlets may just regurgitate the press releases instead of writing truly independent articles about the company. 1000 regurgitated press releases as useful as nothing when it comes to demonstrating that a company meets Wikipedia's notability criteria.
  • Finally, just a technical matter - don't start a line with a space in Wikipedia. If you want to indent a line, put a colon at the beginning. I've re-formatted your earlier comments so they have colons where you indented. If you reply to this message here, please put two colons in front of each line you write, so you will be indented more than I am.

To any talk-page stalkers out there: He is referring to the AFD for Rent My Vacation Home USA. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 05:16, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
We are students at Coastal Carolina and we did this report. We do not work for Rent My Vacation Home so we do not have access to data other than a search. Sorry maybe contact the company for more info but we did as other before us on this project. Is there some other reason this standard is set higher than other pages here. Is some information better then none and why does not 1 person find a fact to dispute anything. We assumed if the article was here everyone could add on to it. Is every article here held to this standard well just read the vacation rentals and no they are not. — — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jayfrankauthor (talkcontribs) 08:42, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
If this is a class that is teaching you how to edit Wikipedia, talk to your professor or teaching assistant or ask your peers for help. If this is a class and Wikipedia is just a "means to an end" to your assigned tasks and you don't have local help available, read Wikipedia:42, Wikipedia:My first article, Wikipedia:Verify, Wikipedia:Reliable sources, Wikipedia:Notability, Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, and Wikipedia:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. I threw in the last two because you have noticed a few pages that are so sub-standard that it may be better to delete them and start over than to keep them and to counter your argument that just because a poorly-written article exists you should be allowed to add another poorly-written article to the encyclopedia.
The standards for articles going through AFC are slightly higher than an article you write yourself because, ideally, by the time an article gets through AFC, it will be "deletion proof" - that is, it will be in good enough shape that if it is nominated for deletion, most editors will recommend that the article be kept. Unfortunately, your submission was one that got through a reviewer who didn't scrutinize your submission as thoroughly as he should have. On behalf of the review team at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Articles for Creation, I apologize for letting this article get to the main encyclopedia before it was ready. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:42, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
One more thing: Please "sign" all of your messages with ~~~~. The Wikipedia software will automatically turn this into your "signature" which, by default, is just a link to your "user" page followed by a link to your "talk" page followed by the time of the message. You can customize this in your preferences.
Also, I took the liberty of indenting your comment above so it's easy to see the flow of the conversation. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:06, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Davidwr, hope all is well? I was wondering if you know how to update the information shown to the right of a google search page. I did a google search on "Wizkid" and the information to the right of the page is outdated. Google pulled it from Wizkid's Wikipedia article. Wizkid's DOB is (July 16, 1990) not July 16, 1989. I made a mistake with his DOB when I created the page. Is there a way to update that on google manually? I sent a feedback to google but they didn't fix the problem. versace1608 (talk) 19:43, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Just be patient, they will get it soon enough. Wikipedia article page changes are usually picked up within hours or days. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:51, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. It's been like that for months though. One more thing, I contacted a flickr user asking him to use the pictures he has of Tiwa Savage. He sent a short letter to OTRS. Can I upload the pics and include the OTRS pending tag? versace1608 (talk) 20:14, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
You CAN but things may go smoother if you wait until OTRS has responded. If he has licensed them under a Commons-compatible free license, the proper place to upload them is the Wikimedia Commons. If he has NOT granted a Commons-compatible free license, then any use must comply with WP:NFCC and OTRS is typically not necessary. If you want to expedite things, have the Flickr user explicitly release them under a Commons-compatible free license on Flickr, then upload them to the Commons with the OTRS-pending template and put a note on the file's talk page explaining that the OTRS is there just to counter anyone who thinks the image has been "Flickr-washed". davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:14, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy is not Chestnut Hill Academy

Davidwr,

You denied my "Springside Chestnut Hill Academy" article because you said the school already has an article, labeled "Chestnut Hill Academy." However, Chestnut Hill Academy is no longer a school. The current school is Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, which makes Chestnut Hill Academy not valid. However, for historical references, it makes sense to keep Chestnut Hill Academy. Please allow me to create the article on the new school, as they are two separate entities. Melissa jf893 (talk) 02:23, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

It is my understanding based on the existing article that the school merged with another school. The existing article appears to be about both the past and present school. A discussion over which name is best is already open on Talk:Chestnut Hill Academy. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:40, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
I have re-read the pages of both of the predecessor schools and it's clear that having only one of the two articles "continue forward" as the new article was a mistake. I have re-submitted your submission and will accept it as soon as the redirect that I created, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, is deleted. Thank you for your persistence and your patience. In the meantime, continue to improve the article using additional reliable sources. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:51, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

The correct people to ask are the people who are reverting your edits or on the talk page of the page which you edited. I recently reverted one or more edit of yours. Between the edit summaries (visible in the "history" of each page), the notes on the article talk pages, the notes on your talk page (User talk:98.122.39.11), and the notes in any relevant deletion discussions, I you will find the explanations of all of my reverts of your recent edits. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:00, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Comment by Chaitanya.Errande

Dear David, On the Article I submitted: on Vasudeo Sitaram Bendrey it was rejected on Copyright violation If you go to http://www.historianbendre.com/p/about.html the author has released all material under under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License and the GNU Free Documentation License. Pleasel let me know if anything else is needed. In the article I had given Media links (video interviews) of prominent historians (who themselves have wikipedia pages) independently giving their take on the life and times of Historian Bendrey which will verify all that is in the article submitted, however this is in Marathi. I would like to request that someone with the knowledge of Marathi review this submission. Currently I am working on getting an English/Translated version but this can take time. Can you let me know what else I should do. Thanks Chet — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaitanya.Errande (talkcontribs) 21:36, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Do you work for a competitor and why would anyone delete the article when adding books to it.

Did we add the wrong book

What reason do you have to delete when we are working on references. At this point please terminate me form my membership if this is not put back on the site. While I have your attention...I'm participating in the backlog drive at AfC and saw your note to APerson about asking for input re: borderline articles. Hello David, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to ask what is the best way to tell Wikipedia Editors/Administrators about an Article that needs a Quick Update Or Improvement? Foodie (talk) 12:47, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

@Loveoffood007: If you can fix it yourself, do so. If it may be controversial, propose it on the article's talk page then if nobody objects in 1-2 days, make the change. If it requires expert attention, post a note on either the relevant WikiProject's talk page or on the talk page of an active editor who has made significant productive edits to the page. If the page is protected, use the {{edit-protect}} template on the article's talk page along with your suggested changes. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:51, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Comment: Please confirm that the WikiLink for Black & Blue Records is correct. The Wikipedia article is about a French company that specializes in jazz and blues. That doesn't sound like the kind of thing this band does. If it is the same company, then the article about the record company needs an update. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:11, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

The link for Black & Blue Records is for a punk/hardcore/metal label located in the United States. Black & Blue Records is responsible for G.G. Allin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GG_Allin) and is the first label to carry his music. They continue to sell his albums today along with other notable acts. The French label does not appear to be in business anymore and is not connected in any way to the punk label.MetalMalice (talk) 19:31, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

@MetalMalice: I recommend removing the Wikilink. If the United States company is notable as a company (see Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)) then a new article about the company can be created. I would recommend calling it Black & Blue Records (United States) or some such as the name Black & Blue Records is taken. If the company is NOT notable (most record labels that are not "major" labels will fail the notability test and likely wind up at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion eventually) then please do not spend time creating an article about it. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:46, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
@Davidwr: What does being a major label have to do with notability? Does Wikipedia regard Lloyd Kaufman and his Troma Film company (surely an indy and not a major film company) as being notable? Isn't notoriety based upon what you DO and not who you ARE? Black & Blue Records (US...and I agree that it should be changed to reflect they are based in the US) are responsible for not only GG Allin (already a "notable" on Wikipedia) but numerous other bands that are notable as well (such as "The Skabs".) I would love to write an article about them as well...but is that required to use them as a reference? Also, do you realize how many indy labels put out bands that would later go on to become famous because of what the label did for them? Don't they deserve some sort of mention? Isn't Wikipedia incomplete if a history of a "notable" subject isn't fully explored? Again, this business about notability seems just like plain old good fashioned biased opinion. If more than 20 news outlets mention a subject more than once every year for over a period of 20 years...I'd say that makes the subject notable. Honestly, if you guys would at least just tell me exactly what you're looking for so I can adjust the article to suit your liking, then I can go ahead and do that and stop wasting both of our time.MetalMalice (talk) 20:11, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
@MetalMalice: "That something is notable enough to have a Wikipedia article" just means that the thing (in this case, a company) has received significant coverage from reliable sources that are independent of the thing in question. By definition, this does not count press releases or "trivial" mentions, even if they are published in reliable sources. For better or for worse, Wikipedia is full of stuff that really doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines (see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS for more on that topic). While I won't comment on the specific topics you mentioned, I will say that "If more than 20 news outlets mention a subject more than once every year for over a period of 20 years" and those mentions add up to significant coverage and that coverage is independent of the subject (i.e. not reprinted or rewritten press releases or mere listings or "capsule" reviews) then yes, the topic probably is notable. jI think most of your questions about notability related to music can be answered by reading Wikipedia:Notability (music), Wikipedia:Notability (people), and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). By the way, since I get an alert when my talk page changes, there is no need to use the {{ping}} template. Also, please indent your replies one level lower than the message to which you are responding. I adjusted the indent of one of your earlier replies. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:25, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Justice Safety Valve Act

Hi David, Thank you for reviewing my entry. I think I understand your recommendations so I added more of the content under your combined version. Please let me know if that makes it acceptable. Yhtak2014 (talk) 17:19, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Actually, it wasn't my version, it was your other version, see the page history of the article. I just changed the title from S 619 to Justice Safety Valve Act of 2013. There was no need to re-submit the AFC draft, I "declined" it as a matter of AFC housekeeping (submissions of existing articles are declined for housekeeping reasons). I did some fixups to the existing article. I still question the notability of the topic. The best thing you could do to prevent someone from nominating it for deletion would be to work in the other references as in-line references, and show how the bill, even if it does not advance any further, has already met Wikipedia's notability guidelines (see Wikipedia:Notability) then go on to show what effects the filing of the bill has had on American and the world. For example, if a newspaper or other reliable source said that this bill has stirred up debate on the issue, that would be something that you could add to the article. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:34, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Articles for Creation

On Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/October 2013 Backlog Elimination Drive/EuroCarGT, I picked the wrong one. Thanks for reviewing it! ///EuroCarGT 23:51, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Can I ask, why decline the speedy when there seems to be no evidence this guy exists let alone has notability? I have no problem with it but I'm trying to work out when to go for deletion and when not. There didn't seem to be anything salvageable about the page when google didn't turn up any results for him nor could I find him on the club page..-- 🍺 Antiqueight confer 02:08, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

I found evidence that this person exists in soccer-related circles but have not yet found evidence that he is on the reserve squad. However, that is not surprising as I've had a hard time finding the roster of that reserve squad at all, so WP:AFG on that claim still holds.
If I had to do it all over again I would've left well enough alone, as it's arguable that the claim "so and so is on the reserve squad of a top-tier football club" is not in fact a claim of notability. If I had run across the article without any deletion-related template on it, I would've used WP:BLPPROD since there was no reference on the page at all, then watchlisted the page and sent it to AFD if necessary. BLPPROD is a slower (10-day) and less-robust (WP:REFUNDs are possible) process but it's a very simple procedure. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:25, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Depending on my mood I might just BLPPROD or I might find sources and add them if I can. In this case I couldn't find him at all, at least not as notable on a team. I have been trying to CSD only for blatant things like vandalism or advertising or copyvio. But the difference between a guy who doesn't seem to be notable and a guy making it up is hard to parse on occasion. -- 🍺 Antiqueight confer 18:20, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

West India Committee

The article West India Committee was a copyvio, which I didn't realize when I was working on it. I edited the article to remove the copyvio. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 04:45, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Kelly McGonigal (2)

It is nice to be asked so I had a rather slapdash go at an article. Although I added a bit more after the rejection I'm not confident about resubmitting in view of the clear cut 'no sale' from Miniapolis. She doesn't qualify for an article as an academic through the criterion of secondary sources, and never will I think. She is not really a researcher more a synthesizer and populariser, a commentator about what psychology has to say on lifestyle choices . To qualify on those grounds her media profile is the thing, she has been on the Today show talking about resolutions, and gave a presentation at the prestigious event that is TEDGlobal 2013, so it says something that she is getting these invitations, but still not quite all the way there. I'm going to put the article on the back burner for a while. If she has more stature in a few months time, maybe I'll add the refs and resubmit.Overagainst (talk) 21:29, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Just be sure to edit it every 6 months OR remember the title of the page, because 6 months after the last edit it will be deleted under WP:CSD#G13. Pages deleted under "G13" can be un-deleted upon request (see WP:REFUND). davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:45, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Page stalking

Hi Davidwr, I'd be grateful if you would let me respond to enquiries left for me on my Talk page. I am quite capable of doing so. You've taken it upon yourself to respond to the last two messages left for me and, frankly, it's beginning to get annoying. I'm sure you have better things to do. Kind regards. Understood. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:14, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
