Regarding Rama's Arrow[edit]

Hi, I don't know if u followed my messages on deeptrivia's talkpage; I was also clearly in favour of a second chance which is the reason why I did not file an RfC. My note to deeptrivia was more on lines of informing the past history of the user. Thanks for chipping in on my talkpage. --Gurubrahma 04:11, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

India's losses in WW2[edit]

Hi:
I am updating the Wikipedia page on WW2 casualties for India . Currently we have posted the offical 1946 data reported by the UK. Do you know of Indian official sources that may have superceded this data? In the case of of Australia, New Zeland and Canada the current(2005) official totals are different than the 1946 data from London. --Berndd11222 15:18, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hindi translation to Taj Mahal[edit]

Can someone help me understand the relevance of the Hindi translation of Taj Mahal? The words appear not be Hindi in origin; typically the name is thought to be a corruption of Persian (which I realize has a relationship to Hindi, but also to Urdu, etc.). Why Hindi in particular? Why not Urdu or Persian? Why a translation at all? --Nemonoman 15:28, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I've no idea where that list of Top 7 wonders has come from, but it definitely isn't at the external link supplied in the article. The organisation involved are running a poll to determine a new 7 wonders, and the 21 things there are on their shortlist. I've reinstated my edit. If you can find a source for that Top 7 wonders great, but the poll and the shortlist deserves to stay. Morwen - Talk 17:39, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Delhi location and simlar[edit]

Please see Agra.

I copied the orange Agra location image from the French wiki, and thought it did the trick.

The new image is not pleasant: very busy, hard to find Agra, etc.

Your image for Delhi and similar for other India cities (e.g., Belgaum) might be a good compromise.

Can you make one for Agra, or point me to the base image and I will make one.

Thanks.

I have very much been considering removing the Hinduism templates from the article, even as you are removing the mention other religions.

Re:Hindu[edit]

Hi Deepak - I noticed the problems on talk:Hindu with a user:SocialWorker. I'm posting this here coz I don't want it to feed this person's actions, but we should be careful that the assertions/info that is the subject of this person's rants is NPOV/factual. While his/her behavior is destructive, he/she may have a point if the data in question is not well researched. Rama's Arrow 21:31, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deepak - I completely agree with your beliefs and position. Should the matter intensify, you may expect my ready support for the defense of the article - I know this SocialWorker is akin to the dalit and Muslim extremists with a very anti-Hindu political agenda. My only concern was that we should be assured of our own ground on the issue according to Wikipedia norms. For example, if the matter came to the attention of a non-Indian administrator, it should not be found that the material we were defending carried some non-factual, POV elements. I know the Hindu article requires many revisions. On the other hand, if the reference is provided, nothing may be disputed.
Btw, I consider the Gita to be a wonderful, scientific discourse on the discovery of God - it is astounding to anyone interested in the working of the world. Rama's Arrow 02:54, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this is the purpose of my life - to get some questions answered. Good luck for your exams - I'll do some revisions on the article (ps - don't tell anybody.....I put that stuff into the article about who is a Hindu.....I created this article...) Image Tagging Image:Thardesert.jpg[edit]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Thardesert.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Cleaning up[edit]

Hello Deepak, my point isn't to edit war. What you did by changing that info is making it so most of the paragraphs have India says this and India says that without the other side. I agree the article is in pathetic shape but almost all the edit you did were one sided and at the end the only other POV that was given you said "India however rebuffs these allegations as an attempt to create a false anti-India propaganda." That does not seem biased to you? Having four paragraphs on how India accuses these groups and Pakistan and then the numbers of "terrorist camps", but only one sentence on India's responsibility and then claiming that sentence as unikely. We are not here to cover up anything, so the best thing for you to do is to make the information shorter and not repeated. Try doing small edits to each section. Also sources is not the problem here, sources can be found but it should be clearly said whose sources. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 17:21, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is the concern with the cleansing part, it gives both sides? I think we should make the article shorter and that could fix some of the problems. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 17:37, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons for staying[edit]

Yeah Deepak, don't leave. I believe Wikipedia is more to learn from than contributing to - think of the conflict-resolution skills that you will pick up here, let alone the joy of obtaining vast amount of information simply by writing articles, and reading them.
You might not think most people take Wikipedia seriously, but it is the largest in the world. Just like Hinduism - you can't give up on a widely-misunderstood but exceedingly rich and diverse faith. Rama's Arrow 07:48, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you do decide to stick to leaving, count on this - check back in 2047; I'll be here.Rama's Arrow 07:50, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please continue[edit]

I am aware of the problems and the stress one may sometime encounter here – but would not you agree that editing here is a really satisfying activity?. As regards the credibility, we all must continue here to ensure and add to the credibility of the Project. Please stay back. At least, please come back after sometime. --Bhadani 08:10, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of WP[edit]

As I see it, it serves two purposes - one, as an encyclopedia; here or on EB, people know that nothing is God's gospel - my belief is that the WP model helps in bringing material closer to perfection than EB. two, it helps us grow as human beings. I believe that you should stay, but probly take a wikibreak, come back and work on missing articles. Whatever your decision, I wish you all the best in your life, but I also wish thatt you keep contributing to WP. --Gurubrahma 08:14, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some comments[edit]

I can completely understand your frustration and I agree with what you are saying about arguments on petty things. To me, it makes wikipedia an even more interesting experience, a good opportunity to practice metta, among other things. A few humble suggestions:

  • A wikibreak will definitely help, but please don't go!
  • Try focussing on science related articles for some time, if that interests you. Editors' attitude in those fields is extremely constructive, and there are few confrontations.
  • Consider contributing towards shaping a more effective verifiability policy, and contributing to Fact and Reference Check project.

As recently as yesterday I found a factually incorrect article based on information from a hate site, but I haven't done anything with the article for now (although I am discussing the problem in general elsewhere) because I can't think of a way of doing this without confronting with the author. I know I have better things to do. We all need you here, Deepak, and highly appreciate your contributions. Please stay! deeptrivia (talk) 17:04, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Take a short break and come back, Deepak, or jump to another area for a few weeks as DT suggests. I think almost all of us here have thought about quitting at one point or another due to stress. But staying away for long feels worse than staying on. Tintin (talk) 16:17, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Partition graphic[edit]

Deepak, we can take a poll on this if you'd like, but I find the original graphic much preferable to the one you created. It is much bolder and more easily comprehensible. Your graphic is too small, not as colorful, and cluttered with irrelevant place names. Sorry to be so blunt, but there it is. None of us is the best judge of his/her own work. Are you sure you want to insist on placing your graphic at the top? Zora 01:17, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly, my main intention was to give an illustration of India before and after the partition. Perhaps, I am not very good in making maps. Please go ahead place my graphic in any appropriate section. Cheers --Incman|वार्ता 01:23, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review Kolkata[edit]

Hi! A request has been made for peer review of Kolkata. Could you please help improving the article? Thanks a lot.--Dwaipayanc 11:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Good that you are back in action. Delhi needs urgent attention. I tried to do some edits and in the process, ruthlessly edited out many portions and also created some daughter articles. There is nothing in the Utility services, while the Origin of name is a very short section. Many red links are there. Please see. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:46, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Yes the article is in great shape. I have not read it throughly in its new avatar. On a quick glance, here are some points:
"Culture" needs suumarisation. As per Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities, there should not be any subsection. However, Sports subsection can be retained, and even can be made a seperate section. Also, in culture, the usual dress people wear should be mentioned. We can do without "Shopping" I guess. At least, the subsection shopping should not be there. The content has to be summarised. IMO, a daughter article should be created for Delhi culture. And the content is to be summarised in the main article. THe new images of Pan and the children having a splash in the pond is absolutely fantastic.
I see most of the points in "to do" list have been done. Thats great. In gist, "Culture" summarisation needed. Then put it for Peer Review. Following a peer review, there should not be any problem to make it an FA. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:51, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:What is a featured article? point 3, where it states that "It complies with the standards set out in the style manual and relevant WikiProjects." So Delhi has to abide by thr project.
In fact, I was talking to Nichalp (who is the main architect of that project) refarding the rigidity imposed by the project. Nichalp wanted to know further opinion on the alleged rigidity. However, I could not discuss more due to shortage of time. However, the efficacy of this Project has been proven. Many Indian city article has been promoted to FA status following the guidelines.
My own experience with Kolkata is same. Initially it had a section called "Tourism" and also Subsections in "Culture" like Cinema, Literature etc (you can understand that cinema and literature are very important part of Kolkata culture as is Shopping in case of Delhi). However. later. Nichalp pointed out that rule 3.
You can discuss in the talk page of the Indian Cities project. I shall also join. With Nichalp around, we should be able to carve out a way. For the time being, I strongly disagree with retaining "shopping" as a subsection in Delhi. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:40, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nichalp abd Deepak, one thing we should remember, this project has produced 6 FAs. So the effectiveness of the guidelines is beyond doubt. However, with a lot more cities being worked on (2 are in peer review, and at least 2 more getting readied), it's high time we review the project, may be get some feedback some others. Some sort of flexibilities can be incorporated, keeping in view the diverse nature of the cities, as Deepak has pointed out.
Too much subsectioning rather hinders the reading. Also makes the ToC clumsy. However, a ew subsectioning is acceptable/ However, subsectioning creates another problem. Thebalance of size between different sections is lost (with subsections, Delhi culture is gonna be much larger than, say, Economy of Delhi.
The project says Sports can be incorporated within Culture. So no problems with that.Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:05, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your points regarding subsections in Kolkata, Delhi etc. and the ease which subsectioning would allow. However, I want to clarify the "no-subsection" is not my view. t is in the project page. Now, I also had similar questions when I started to upgrade the Kolkata articele. I propose to retain the present format for Delhi for the time being, and ask in the project talk page, and also in talk page of Nichalp regarding the issue (which we already have done). We should wait for the reply by Nichalp. After discussing with him and others conserned, may be we could modify the project/ increase its flexibility to some extent. Waiting a few days before moving Delhi to peer review - hope that's ok with you. 2 Indian cities are already in peer review. So we can wait a bit.--Dwaipayan (talk) 01:52, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! You seem to be up early. I am not usually. However, for last few days I am in Delhi for some works, staying in AIIMS hostel, in the midst of the anti-reservation protests. And I am getting awaekened here unusually early! Where do you stay in Delhi?--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:01, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Delhi[edit]

Hi Deepak. I'm currently pressed for time. Will look into it later. Take Nichalp into confidence as he was the one who brought Mumbai, among others, to FA status. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:31, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Summary for Delhi[edit]

Hi Deepak,

I am currently looking into selecting "Today's Selected Article" for Portal:India. Delhi recently became a selected article on Portal:India. In order for it to appear on the main page of the portal, can you please provide a summary with an image on this page on the same lines as existing articles do. Thanks, -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:06, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic Translation for Taj Mahal[edit]

Dear Deepak: You may remember a discussion we had concerning translation of the words "Taj Mahal". The opening sentence of that article now not only includes English, Hindi, Urdu, and International Phonetic Alphabet translations, a new editor has recently added an Arabic translation. I'm sure you can issue useful guidelines on treatment of these translations as well. --Nemonoman 17:17, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
