My watchlist

[edit]

I think there's a bug in My Watchlist, 'cos the last changes happened at 18:35 with no more alterations after that. Even though I've updated some of the pages, the list shows the same results. How can I get this problem fixed? :-/ -- Jerry Crimson Mann 1 July 2005 14:53 (UTC)

Gosh! The bug's still there. That really hinders my editing! :-# -- Jerry Crimson Mann 1 July 2005 18:51 (UTC)

Re:Pang uk

[edit]

Well, I can't find much useful information of Pang uk at this moment, so my tactic is to make stilt house a general page. I found that there are different kinds of stilt house all over the world, and all of them have different construction methods and purposes. I hope my research would help Pang uk escape deletion. :-) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 2 July 2005 19:00 (UTC)

POV edits

[edit]

You are not helping yourself. "Authorities of Taiwan" and "semi-governmental" sound awfully like a communist pro da. What you are doing can only excite resentment and make people "see" a previously non-exist strong point of view in mainland China etc.. Remember, in a heated debate people start to maintain points they would not normally agree with. I believe you are doing it, and Huaiwei are doing it: I don't think he would blindly oppose mainland China otherwise. If you want other people to share your way of seeing the world, explain it to them. Do not push them away! -- Alassius (talk) 3 July 2005 01:23 (UTC)

I agree with MarkSweep's edit. That was a good example of using scare quotes. Apologies for the late reply, I'm in constant travel this couple of months. -- Alassius (talk) 9 July 2005 14:46 (UTC)

Taiwan Affairs Office and an ArbCom case

[edit]

I didn't know about the history of reverts when I editted the page. I just thought it was common sense that the Taiwan Affairs Office was related to Cross-straits relations and found its absence from the category odd.

I have no idea what Schmucky wants. He seems to have an anti-HK autonomy/independence bent, and seems to be suspicious of anything that he thinks might support that view, including mentions of "mainland China", and putting Hong Kong in international lists. I think you should just lay low and avoid the whole Taiwan/ROC and mainland China issue until the arbitration case is finished. --Yuje July 3, 2005 19:59 (UTC)

(please excuse this late reply) I dont see where a request was made. Is it still up? --Jiang 8 July 2005 11:58 (UTC)

Your Help is Needed!

[edit]

Hi Instantnood!

So happy that we have our Hong Kong article promoted to be an WP:FAC, gaining an overwhelming popularity. I think it's not the time to cool down our ambition. The page flag of Hong Kong is now asking for your helping hand! I have greatly modelled it on flag of South Africa and flag of India, plus some brand-new illustrations added which is drawn by me with Flash, and the standard of the article has been greatly boosted, and, nearly, lived up to the feature article's standard. Still, some crucial information is absent, and that's whay your help is urgently needed!

What you can help

[edit]

The following information are still missing:

  • Symbolism, e.g. the meaning of the design, the bauhinia flower, the red-coloured background, etc.
  • History
  • Photos, e.g. Flags raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square, Flags in parade, desecration cases (I think Long Hair have tried that before ;-P), etc.

Being an active and endeavourous wikipedian, you are now asked to collaborate on this project at full stretch — and to shouw your pride of being a HK wikipedian!

Yours sincerely, Jerry Crimson Mann 6 July 2005 15:20 (UTC)

Audrey Eu article

[edit]

In the Audrey Eu article you replaced the term "Beijing media" with "pro-Beijing media". I think that the meaning of these are definitely not the same. Would you mind having a little discussion about this matter?

BTW, I think it's time to remove the cleanup translation notice from the article.

If you can, reply at my talk page. -Deryck C. 7 July 2005 11:08 (UTC)

But the original author says "media in Beijing", isn't it? Deryck C. 8 July 2005 02:26 (UTC)
Pro-beijing then. What a shame - I've been listening to a 1.5-hr talk given by her and yet don't know whose viewing her as evil woman. Deryck C. 8 July 2005 05:44 (UTC)

Re:UrbCo symbol

[edit]

It's just a re-draw of [1]. In fact, if my memory serves me, this design can be found on the old urban council public library card. As for the symbols of the Mong Kok and Yau Tsim district boards before merging, I don't have the faintest idea at the mo. Maybe I'll attempt an search on the Net later on.:-)

PS Deryck Chan has expanded the history section of Flag of Hong Kong (Good on him :) ). But I think it would be desirable to have a copyediting. Would you mind helping me with that? :-D

PPS Do know where I can grab some more information on the history of the flag? Many thanks. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 8 July 2005 10:34 (UTC)

Han Chinese infobox

[edit]

Isn't mainland China the only place where the distinction is made between Han and other PRC nationals? In most other parts of the world, Han Chinese seems to be mostly equated with ethnic Chinese. What non-Han ethnic groups are classified as Chinese in HK? PRC-designated minorities? --Yuje 06:24, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Are HKers/Macau people overseas Chinese?

[edit]

Technically, wasn't HK (except for HK island) were still part of China even during colonial administration? The territory was technically only "leased" to the British, but still nominally belonging to China. I'm not sure about Macau. Was it ever formally ceded to Portugal? I find it surprising that the ROC regarded them as being overseas Chinese, though. Did this policy originate before or after the retreat to Taiwan?--Yuje 12:32, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

GMT+8=the entire China?

[edit]

As far as I know, Urumqi is GMT+7. Therefore not every place in China adopts the Beijing time GMT+8 and I insist replacing the sentence saying "HKT is the same as all China" with something else such as "HKT is the same as Coastal China Time".

Discovery Bay page vandalism - need help

[edit]

Hi, I am a fellow Hong Kong Wikipedian who worked on the Discovery Bay page. A series of IP addresses: 213.41.1.226, 81.178.201.68 and 200.215.36.17 keep adding the following nonsense to the page:

The Plaza also provides a unique community childminding scheme, whereby children can play freely in the area, while their parents can relax and enjoy themselves without having to worry about their children's behaviour.

While perhaps true, it isn't really appropriate for an encyclopedia. I have already warned the first two IP addresses, but I think it is obvious this vandalism is perpuated by the same person so I don't think it would help warning the 3rd. Is there anything that can be done?

Thanks. --Mintchocicecream 17:06, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Chinese American writers

[edit]

If it was deleted, it shouldn't have been. The Category:Chinese Americans is too big as it is, and Category:Chinese American writers is a useful category. When searching for writers or writings related to the Chinese American experience, its history, or its literature, I really don't want to have wade through physicists, politicians, mathematicians, actors and actresses, singers, astronauts, and miscellaneous famous people like Vincent Chin, Alex Chiu, or William Hung. --Yuje 12:20, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

There's the Wikipedia:Undeletion policy, but it doesn't say anything about categories. But categories are a lot easier to restore than articles since they don't require rewriting; all it requires is to create the page name and to populate it.
Anyway, like I said, the deleted categories are useful ones, and I would hardly call the votes for deletion a fair concensus when none of the actual creators of the categories or the editors of articles within those categories voted or commented. One of the voters didn't even know what Overseas Chinese were. Category:Japanese American writers, Category:Korean American writers, and category:African American writers exists also, so it's not unprecedented or controversial. IMO, category:Chinese American actors, category:Chinese American politicians and category:Chinese American scientists are also useful ones that should be (re)created.

HK collaboration of the week

[edit]

Hello, I've noticed that there are already a great no. of HK articles, but many of them are unpolished - not to say disorganized (e.g. Sham Shui Po). Hi, Instantnood, sorry for taking a while to get back to you. I would actually prefer to have the discussion take place here, in public, on your talk page (or elsewhere) rather than through email (unless it is absolutely necessary), that is partially the reason why I have yet to respond to your emails (The point was that you agreed to my truce and then broke the conditions we set for it by editing naming conventions (I don't care if it was in response to hitherto such edits by the other side, the arrangment was for you to contact myself rather than revert). If you wish to abandon this plan, that's fine, we can do that once the block period expires. Let me know. Thanks. El_C 23:06, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for this oversight on my part, it has been an intensive and intense session for me today. At any rate, I have responded to your comment here. About the Chinese phonetic symbols

[edit]

Recently, I am adding "pinyin" phonetic symbols to the Chinese names in some Hong Kong-related articles. I see that you are adding two different systems of Cantonese phonetic symbols too. Thank you for your contribution. But somehow I think it is not necessary to add two different systems of Cantonese phonetic symbols. They serve the same purpose and are kind of redundant. Should we just keep one of them? I point out this, because every time readers have to go through those several-line wierd symbols before getting to the "real content."

But actually, I still wonder whether it is useful to add any of those three types of phonetic symbols. Chinese speakers should know how to pronounce those Chinese names without looking at the phonetic symbols. Foreigners may not be interested in learning how the Chinese names are pronouced. Also, most of the time they haven't learned those phonetic symbols before, and so they don't know how to pronounce those phonetic symbols and they may not find them useful. But it looks more profession for the articles to have the phonetic symbols though. :-)

What do you think about adding phonetic symbols?

-Alanmak 22:44, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply:
The type of info boxes that is used in Korea-related articles is pretty odd, and it occupies a lot of space. I don't think it is suitable for Hong Kong-related articles, as Hong Kong-related articles usually contain a lot of pictures and a "series" templates at the top of the pages. There is no space to accomodate an info box specialized for phonetic symbols. I would rather have an entire first line for phonetic symbols in an article then. By the way, I also agree that "粵拼" is a better romanization method than IPA. It is readable for more readers. Can we just ignore the official sugestion of Wikipedia and use "粵拼" without IPA? :-)
What are you occupied by recently? :-) I don't know.

Thanks for your support

[edit]

Hi Instantnood. Thank you for supporting my recent RfA. I was surprised and humbled by the number of positives votes. I was especially touched by your vote (as well as Huaiwei's and SchmuckyTheCat's votes). I hope I'm not reading too much into it, but I feel that this is a vote of confidence, and I'd like to repay you by trying to help the three of you come to a peaceful resolution regarding the China/Taiwan-related articles. I think you all got off to a bad start earlier this year, much of which can be attributed to genuine trolls/vandals. I'll try my best to help eradicate malicious vandalism and to work with genuine contributors like yourself to establish a new consensus based on mutual respect. Cheers, --MarkSweep 02:04, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Chinese terms, Mandarin terms, Cantonese terms

[edit]

Take it to one of the talk pages and clarify with him exactly what he considers to be a term and what isn't, until a crystal clear standard comes up. If he wants to try to enforce too rigid a definition, it would hamper his own edits as well, and if a broader usage is agreed on, you should have room to work with. --Yuje 14:35, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

Also, to add, I think that the categorizations, using the standards within category:Japanese terms as an example guideline for inclusion, would be reasonable. For example, I think baozi is definitely a term, used to describe a type of Chinese food (just like pasta and sushi are terms for types of food.).--Yuje 14:50, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
I don't know, and I find his motives a bit puzzling sometimes. For example, I don't know why he's complaining about food not being a term when he was the first to categorize it as such. For example [4], he says that Re Gan Mian isn't a term, but he was the person who first categorized it as a term. --Yuje 15:19, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

Ya — just if you regard Discovery Bay as part of the NT. :-) It's sometimes a bit odd to call an outlying island in HK as a NT area. But in fact I used to living in HK Island, so I did have a UrbCo lib card. But the question is: I lost it for long. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 17:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, back to the topic. I don't know where the heck is Cheung Kong Center. Where is it? :-) I don't have the picture for that. Sorry. Why do you want such a picture?

By the way, I am not sure whether the "New World Centre" picture is "politically correct." You see? It only has the English name "New World Center", but no Chinese name. (Just kidding :-))

To tell you the truth,I don't really like that notice. Are there anyexamples of thatkind of thing being used elsewhere? How about if you just take it to WP:RM, alert those involved on both sides of the dispute, and see what kind of consensus evolves? Dmcdevit·t 06:40, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

I don't entirely against it, I can't really decide what I think about it. Part of that stems from the fact that I don't feel qualified to comment except very generally on this. So you're saying the book isn't English and probably not stored by English retailers. I don't have a problem with that. But I can't find even evidence the book exists in whatever language. If it sold over 100,000 copies. Fine. It's all good and I'd love to have the entry around, but is there proof? - Mgm|(talk) 21:28, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

红豆冰 is the Chinese name for ice kachang in Singapore, but it's usually a bowl of shaved ice topped with red beans and colored syrup and eaten with a spoon. The 红豆冰 I've seen in HK is an actual red bean drink in a glass, sometimes topped with ice cream. --Yuje 15:40, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
Ice Kachang basically starts with a big bowl of shaved ice, and then syrups of different color are poured on top, and then some red bean and maybe some fruit on top as well. --Yuje 14:11, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Waitau Wah

[edit]

Some older people in Hong Kong, especially those living in walled and fishing villages, speak what are collectively called Waitau wah (Chinese: 圍頭話, lit. language used in walled village), which can be one of the dialects of Cantonese, a mixture of Cantonese and Hakka, or the dialect of Tanka people.

I don't think it is correct, Wahtau Wah is a distinct dialect of Cantonese. What do u think? --K.C. Tang 13:23, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Both Tanka Wah and Waitau Wah are dialects of Cantonese. I can understand Waitau Wah, so i am thinking of making an entry of it, including a glossary for Waitau vocabulary ... but i have to learn how to make table and those IPA stuff ... difficult :( --K.C. Tang 14:36, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I want to know, but I dun live in walled villages (though my surname is Tang, I am by no means an aboriginal)... I suppose Hakka and Waitau are not mixed? I am not sure --K.C. Tang 15:58, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Fuchien or Fukien?

[edit]

The Fujian Provincial Government website uses "Fuchien" AND "Fujian". When I visited the site a couple years ago it used "Fukien" (the url is still fkpg and not fcpg). When I visited it a couple months ago, it did not use "Fujian". The CEC website uses "Fuchien" when announcing election results. The e-Govt website also uses "Fuchien". I think "Fuchien" is the form used by the government, so we should use that spelling for now. I don't know if they'll be gradually converting to "Fujian" though. --Jiang 23:44, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Names of Chinese prefectures

[edit]

Chinese prefectures are in the names that generally are used in China. It is not done in the way ,,prefecture of {{city}}. It is misleading for users from e. g. USA, Poland, Germany or France, as there is a different nomenclature for the cities and the counties in the respective countries. The Italian wikipedia uses the nomenclature ,,prefecture of {{name}}". - Sarcelles 11:02, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

3RR citations

[edit]

Hey Instantnood, I just noticed the recent listing that you posted on WP:AN/3RR. I haven't looked into the details of the issue at all, so for all I know you may be fully justified in bringing these allegations. However, I'm still concerned about the fact that you and a small group of other editors seem to be locked in constant battle. I haven't read up on what's been going on recently, and I'm not here to assign blame, just to inquire whether there might be another way. It's obvious that all sides are very persistent, and I admire everyone's dedication. But perhaps the effort that goes into listing each other for 3RR violations would be better spent on coming up with creative compromises (I know, that can be very hard). The constant 3RR citations will likely do a lot of harm in terms of poisoning the atmosphere and making future compromises that much harder. So please don't allow yourself to get dragged into a game of slow reverts and attrition. There's got to be a better way. If you think there are any issues I could help you guys with, please let me know. Cheers, --MarkSweep 10:21, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WaiTau Wah

[edit]

I've added a comment in Talk:Waitau but haven't altered the text at all. In the link you have me earlier, I did make a small change. See [Languages of Hong Kong]. As for Se Wah - I haven't made a comment there, but traditionally, S language has been linked to Hakka, rather than Cantonese. Se Wah often because of the homophone is rendered as 蛇話/蛇话 's language', but this is incorrect. The She peoples are more properly rendered as 畲族 speaking 畲話. List of official languages by country

[edit]

Thank you for contributing to my talk page. Your comment/fact was useless and you still don't get it. The list of official languages by country is about languages not writing systems. And before leaving comments on a user page about something in an article, the proper thing would be to first leave a comment on the article's discussion page. Zntrip 22:00, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand what you are trying to tell me. Did I do something that you don't agree with? Or do you just want to tell me about Chinese? -- Zntrip 23:56, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
On the article in discussion only official languages are listed. Official writing systems should not be listed. Chinese is not the only language in this situation. For example Norwegian has two official alphabets. Uzbek can be written in with a Cyrillic or Latin alphabet, but only the Latin one is official. In the article the official writing systems are not listed, only the languages are. I would also like to apologize for my rudeness; I didn’t understand what you were saying. I also think it would have been a better idea to first bring this issue up on the article’s discussion page. – Zntrip 22:53, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently Huaiwei doesn't know how to communicate without making personal attacks. I, personally, will begin deleting all of them as I see them. I would agree with you if you did the same. Zoe 22:49, September 7, 2005 (UTC)

I will remove personal attacks if they are excessive. At this point, his incivility is bordering on it. Zoe 19:17, September 8, 2005 (UTC)
The better way IMHO would be keeping the comments with personal attacks displayed, and bringing it to a sysop
I am a sysop. Zoe 19:27, September 8, 2005 (UTC)

Need your help in Hong Kong!

[edit]

Karmosin (otherwise known as Peter or Isotalo) disagrees with the mentioning of the full name and pronunciation of Hong Kong in the article established on 30 August. Would it be possible for you to list:

  • reasons why the one before modification was used on the 30 August version;
  • as there has to be one somehow
  • any disputes on these issues that may have occured before;
  • as Karmosin sees it "not the least bit controversial"
  • how they were resolved; and
  • your opinion on the issue.

My action on reverting his changes may not be the best, but his action may jeopardize the feature status of the article and must be put on moratorium. This editor is getting on to my nerves! --Carlsmith 00:52, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Mr. Instantnood:

Would you please revert the changes you made to the station template box? I spent 2 hours working on the English-Chinese translation, please don't delete them, I'm very sure that a metro system in a Chinese City will have more people reading in Chinese than English. I have already told my friends to look up at the Wikipedia Website for the Chinese-English names. I would be greatly obliged if you can revert the edits you have made to my work. It is only the names of the stations, and not the whole article that I'm trying to convert it to Chinese. What's more, there is an illustration on top that says "The names of the stations are both in English and Cantonese." Furthermore, I am NOT VANDALIZING the page, but just add more information to it so it could be made better.(68.33.194.218 21:39, 17 September 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Hong Kong as a country?

[edit]

Regarding your several edits including this [5], you classify Hong Kong as a country. So I would like to clarify your position; is the statement "Hong Kong is a country" correct or wrong? --Vsion 10:09, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This "non-conventional practice" is your insisting on listing Hong Kong under the heading "country", even after I had compromised to change the heading to "entity". This is your POV way of classifying Hong Kong, I've never heard anyone else insisting on doing that. As for "frustrating", it's just my personal reaction to the disruptive edits, so you can ignore that. Anyway, I am going to create many more lists by countries, and this is not very helpful and I'm not interested in edit wars. Why don't we based on consensus as per discussion in List of countries by population. If you can convince others to your naming practises, I will adhere to the consensus. --Vsion 10:33, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would very much love to hear a direct answer to the above question too. A simple yes or no will do, and not the long-winded rattling we see in User_talk:Vsion#Re:_Hong_Kong_as_a_country.3F.--Huaiwei 10:34, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If we may refer to his post in my talk page above, he just declared that Hong Kong is a country. I suppose that casts his viewpoint in stone, and shall now be used as a basis for all future discussions.--Huaiwei 10:48, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Taiwan

[edit]

Hey,

I see no "vandalism" on the Taiwan section. You have to remember Wikipedia is open source and you must deal with ideas objectively. By censoring other people's contributions because they interfere with your own view of history does not help. The piece you two users keep wrestling with is valid to understanding the posts above. You need to make sure your own personal ideology does not interfere with others. You may disagree, but the other guy has a source, and a good source. The entire section needs an overhaul. Why don't you modify the addition to more objectively relate the information rather than deleting it? - Maowang 16:57, September 24, 2005 (UTC)

Your assertion that the terms "Island of Women" and "Island of Dogs" are points of view can be taken as correct as they are the points of view from Chinese Literati of the early Qing period and advisors to the Qing court. It is through these people the Chinese first imagined Taiwan. The Map of the Ming Empire (1491) Unified Map of Chinese and Barbarians (1607), Map of the Four seas (1723-1730) and the travel writings of Yu Yong He, Ji Qiguang, Lan Ding Yuan and Chen Di ALL support the passage in the Taiwan History section. Taiwan was also believed to be the mythical "Isle of Fairies". Emperor Kanxi called Taiwan a "ball of mud" on November 27, 1683 as recorded in the Veritable Records of the Kangxi Emperor. Remember, the dates you give are also POV and roumor.
I also implore you to read the Classic of the Mountains and the Seas which tell of Islands/Lands of "Women", "Dogs", "Hairy People" and "Two Bodied People" that lay "beyond the seas" in Taiwan's general direction. The Islands of Fairies were Peng Lai, Fang Zheng and Ying Zhou, inhabitied by immortals. Taiwan is often likened to places like these in the travelogues of the 17th Century as Han literati tried to make sense of the strangeness they saw.

Re: The word 係

[edit]

Being educated in Hong Kong, I had the same viewpoint as the original wikipedia article, viz. that use of the word 係 as copula (verb "to be") is an entirely Cantonese phenomenon; my brother was the first person to show me that this is false.

In fact, even in mainland China, the word 係 ("simplified" as 系) is used in very formal situations (and sometimes even informal situations); my brother's characterization, "the word 係 is used when someone wants to show that something has a tradition" is very much the case; it is quite prevalent in government publications, in both Taiwan and mainland China. Hong Kong is the only place 係 is never used because the word is misunderstood as being "colloquial" and therefore bad written Chinese.

I had spent a bit of time collecting a few such examples. In my notes dated February 172005, I have only noted one example:

  • 大陸新建縣人民政府網站:
江西開開電纜有限公司系由浙江私營業主投資6000萬元創辦的企業。

However, I don't think it would be difficult to find other examples from mainland China websites (if we can find their websites). Actually, if I try the query '"系由" site:gov.cn' now, it returns quite a number of relevant results; in fact the first few results are all relevant, showing that the use of 係 is indeed prevalent in mainland China. The first three:

中國大使館駁斥紐西蘭媒體無端指責玉米汙染事件系由中國造成
  • gdyc.tobacco.gov.cn/gbcontent_show.php?news_id=910&channel_id=9&id=74
華環國際煙草有限公司(以下簡稱華環公司)系由蚌埠煙葉復烤廠與上海煙草(集團)公司、香港環球發展有限公司合資興建的打葉復烤企業

I think the Hong Kong education system is doing us a disservice by dissociating colloquial Cantonese too much from the written language; many colloquial expressions are, or at least were, perfectly correct written Chinese.

Regarding the word 係 itself, I wish to also note my observation that the pronunciatons of 係 and 是 are almost identical in Mandarin, as sh is just a retroflex version of x. ——Wing 01:01, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just letting you know, the anonymous user who has deleted the text about the maximum cost of a railway journey in the past has done it again, but I have refrained from reverting it this time due to his claims that it is factually incorrect on the discussion page. Would you be able to check this up please? Thanks. Enochlau 08:40, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I afraid this isn't the correct time. His arbitration case has not ended. - Mailer Diablo 16:48, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination

You're quite welcome. You have the support of the people who see the great work that you have done on the ROC/PRC articles. Too often a lot of people who follow the admin nomination page like making a big deal out of nothing, though. 172 | Talk 20:39, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
