Unspecified source for Image:Tamarinface.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tamarinface.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu Badali 03:44, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure I see the need for such a category; but if it's to be kept, I think it would be better off named something like Category:Military operations of the American Civil War. Kirill Lokshin 20:59, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great work taking care of it so quickly! Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 21:03, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: ACW Cat Cleanup

[edit]

The new guidelines call for a Category:Military units and formations of the American Civil War category; I'm not entirely sure of how to arrange things at this point (as they've only now begun to be implemented), but renaming the existing category to that would probably be a good idea for the time being. Bolding non-TOC headers

[edit]

Regarding diabetes mellitus, I wonder why you bolded the subheaders prefixed with a semicolon. In the standard stylesheet, these are already bolded, and there should be no need to add additional markup. JFW | T@lk 22:27, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Strange. I use Firefox for PC and it's bolded alright, but then I use Monobook. I don't actually mind one way or the other. If you look at the page source (Ctrl-U), does it show a <b> tag around those headers? JFW | T@lk 06:49, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is to inform you that the project page above which you created is currently being considered for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion. Please feel free to make any comments you wish to regarding this proposal there. Thank you. Badbilltucker 20:36, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Jengod, recently you made an edit to Template:United States removing all of the standardization we had agreed on in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. states/state templates with an edit summary of "Destandardizing so it doesn't look like crap anymore. Not broke, don't fix." I'm wondering why you think that the standardization "look[s] like crap," because we reached a general consensus that it certainly does not. If you can't provide a reasonable explanation, I'll probably have to revert it back to a prior version. Thanks! — Webdinger BLAH | SZ 04:05, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

You have recently edited Naming the American Civil War. I am stepping back from the article for a day or so to avoid an edit war. Cribsheet on UK, etc

[edit]

Did anything happen in 1536 to change the status of England and/or Scotland? (Perhaps Henry VIII performing an absentee annexation; that wouldn't surprise me.) I'm guessing you may be looking for something more along the lines of the Union of the Crowns, in 1603, so that from 1603-1707 there's in theory still two kingdoms, initially in personal union under a single monarch -- though sometimes unofficially referred to as the Kingdom of Great Britain (and then of course there's the Commonwealth), made "official" at the Union of the Parliaments in 1707, as you already note. Hope that helps. Alai 06:22, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Veterans Reserve Corps

[edit]

I re-edited this article because you placed it in Category:Veterans Organisations. This is not correct. The VRC was a military unit of the Union Army. It's function was to utilize slightly wounded soldiers, or those who were considered unfit for front-line duty, in other posts...thus freeing up able bodied men for service against the Confederates. This wasn't a organisation like the Grand Army of The Potomac, or the SVC.--Lord Balin 23:47, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thirteen Colonies

[edit]

Hey, thanks for your watching out for large deletions. It makes sense to keep material if it is good stuff. But, I deleted a good chunk of the stuff on the page because it was: 1) Off topic. The sections I removed have nothing to do with the title. (Plus there are full discussions of each of the things I removed on the pages where they belong) 2) The section on British holdings in the West Indies and Canada are dealt with under British North America, British colonization of the Americas and also under their own headings. They simply do not need to be here. (In fact it could be somewhat offensive to citizens of these other countries mentioned - seeing as they never were part of the "13 colonies") 3) Florida. Florida was not part of the 13 Colonies 4) Canada. Same as Florida. Not part of the colonies 5) Section on "From Colonies to States" is dealt with in great depth under several other headings (See the links I added). The section here was not necessary and thus detracts from the usefulness of the page by distracting the reader form its purpose. 6) Note also that you removed the positive additions I made to the page. If you think that the material that I took off (in spite of its being off topic) should be there, please at least consider what I added to the site. Thanks! Scoterican 00:44 18 November 2006 (UTC

Why did you say that the thirteen colonies "became states" in 1775. The thirteen colonies were not seeking independenced in 1775, they didn't even consider the subject until June of 1776. Given that information, wouldn't you think that they could be considered before 1776?

Topics in LAHCM (city)

[edit]

Hi. Inspired by User:Jengod/Topics in LAAZ, I created a page Topics in LAHCM (city). I wasn't sure where to put it. I don't have a strong interest in Southern California so I didn't think my user page was appropriate as I would not maintain the information. I ended up placing the Topics in LAHCM (city) in a sub file on your user page since that is where Topics in LAAZ is located. Please let me know if this is not OK and I will remove it. -- Jreferee 17:32, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Phew! I thought I overstepped my bounds. What I like about the LAHCM (city) list is it serves as a great source to compare a complete Wikipedia assessment on Los Angeles. It contains borderline Wikipedia article subjects and subjects that probably will never stand on their own but might make a nice article in the collective (e.g. Exemplary LA architecture or Notable LA residences). It also unearths topics probably not remembered by anyone.-- Jreferee 13:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Table alignments

[edit]

Hi there, I saw that you changed the alignments of the islands table of the article Channel Islands of California. You centered all text and numbers. Are there any standards of Wikipedia agreements that I don't know about, that suggest such alignment for tables? I haven't looked for the appropriate ISO standard now to back up my arguing, but to me it looks lousy. Text should be aligned left, and numbers right.--Ratzer 21:49, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Text should be aligned left, and numbers right. I've never heard that before in my life or on Wikipedia, and I thought the centered looked better, but you clearly feel more strongly in the other direction, so feel free to revert! jengod 17:43, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lets keep this discussion in the place where it started, which is your discussion page User talk:Averette#miles_or_kilometers.3F.--Ratzer 06:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I havent found an appropriate ISO standard yet. But have you ever noticed, that left alignment of text and right alignment of numbers is the default of Excel? You might also look at a table of the Bureau of the Census: [1]. Also here, numbers are aligned right, and text is basically aligned left (indentations only for areal subunits, but no centered alignment!).--Ratzer 10:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Athenian empire atheight 450 shepherd1923.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Athenian empire atheight 450 shepherd1923.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 22:05, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

San Fernando Valley image

[edit]

You're welcome! And I'm flattered you deemed it worthy for the other article. For the San Fernando Valley article, I was going to insert it on the top, but noticed somebody else just put a different image there. While my image isn't perfect, I don't think that one is a great image as the horizon is not level and the smoggy view isn't great, but I didn't want to get into an "image war" with somebody. FYI, I also put a different image to the Woodland Hills article. --Oakshade 00:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You flatter me. It was such a great day yesterday and I was driving on Topanga Cyn Rd., I had to stop at a vista and snap some shots. --Oakshade 00:09, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You removed the reference to Georges de La Tour from Template:Did you know with the rationale that the article is over 5 days old. However, article age is not the only criterion to consider. The other criterion is that the article must have been expanded by at least 1000 characters in the past five days (at least that's what it says on Template talk:Did you know). Georges de La Tour does meet that criterion. -Amatulic 22:44, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska boundary arbitration map image

[edit]

I really don't understand why you want to replace the JPEG with a PNG in this case, since Wikipedia software has problems with generating very large thumbnails of PNG images which are "photographic" (as opposed to "cartoony"). The huge thumbnails are certain to cause slow downloads for some users. In addition, this particular PNG image which you linked in to the Alaska boundary dispute article was yellowy and dim. My image Image:1926 Canada-Alaska 1903 boundary-map.jpg is no masterpiece of easy legibility, but at least I went some way towards removing the overall color-cast, and using some simple image-enhancement procedures to increase overall image usability -- and as a JPEG, it won't generate huge "thumbnails". Drugstore Cowboy

[edit]

Hi Jengod,

I'm preparing a translation of the Gower Gulch article (which you have edited in November 2004) for the French Wikipedia. I have one question however : what's the meaning of the phrase "drugstore cowboy" ? I can't find any definition in my Robert & Collins dictionnary. Can you also confirm me what "Gower Gulch" refers to (is that a place in the in Wild West) ? Thanks aforehand for helping. --Jibi44 14:07, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer. After further research, I found in the cowboy article the following meaning : "a drugstore cowboy means someone who wears the clothing but cannot actually ride anything but the stool of the drugstore soda fountain--or, in modern times, a bar stool."
Gower Street (Hollywood) article says that its' name derives from John T. Gower, a farming settler living there in 1890. The pun thus coined, "Gower Gulch", must refer to a renowned place, that has a relation with western movies & the Old West, maybe Gower Gulch in the Death Valley. This is what I suppose so far, but without any certainty. Cheers. --Jibi44 21:08, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image permission

[edit]

Here's what you can do if you want to use the above image on Wikipedia:

  1. Have Ira go to that image, click on (edit) next to where it says "(c) All Rights Reserved", and change the license to something like "Attribution-Share alike license" (just make sure it's not Non-commercial or Non-derivative). And then, you can pick the appropriate license at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Free licenses#Creative Commons.
  2. Have Ira write a full permission email to forward to Wikipedia, which allows the image to be modified, redistributed and reused for any purpose. You can read more here: WP:COPYREQ#For images. It's enough to just get permission - the photographer has to release all copyright.

Hope this helps. Mosmof 16:15, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Counties of Pennsylvania Image

[edit]

Jengod, I did like the image of the counties of Pennsylvania that you put on the Pennsylvania page of the Wiki--is there any way to add more cities to the two (Philadelphia and Harrisburg) that you have on the image? Something along the lines of Pittsburgh, Erie, and a few others like Altoona, Allentown, Scranton-Wilkes Barre, etc. Thanks --Vclortho 01:46, 2 March 2007 (UTC)vclortho[reply]

AfD nomination of Chrismukkah

[edit]

I've nominated Chrismukkah, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Chrismukkah satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chrismukkah and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Chrismukkah during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.RJASE1 Talk 18:39, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Ezekiel J. Emanuel

[edit]

An editor has nominated Ezekiel J. Emanuel, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ezekiel J. Emanuel and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Unfortunately, for some reason making a change to the entire page causes Unicode Cyrillic characters to appear as questions marks, causing redlinks and a bad image. I'm not sure what is causing it; someone at the Village Pump could help you out. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 03:54, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I believe the article is written in British style; as a result, punctuation goes outside the quote, unlike in American style. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 03:56, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Clinton_at_pine_ridge.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Clinton_at_pine_ridge.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:46, 14 April 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 00:46, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
