PPI Research Update

First, thanks Mabeenot, I am in awe of the work the assessment team did for this project. The results from the quantitative metric assessments were amazing, really. Check out what your work shows about Wikipedia article quality - I think it’s exciting, but you’ve probably figured out by now that I’m a bit of a nerd. A summary is posted on the Assessment page and a report will be on the Outreach wiki.
Second, I wanted to ask if you haven’t done many assessments on the Student post articles, to please do a couple; articles toward the bottom have only 1 or none assessments. I know some of the material is pretty dry, but this assessment is the most important one for the fall semester and this assessment will be the primary method of showing article quality to the project grant funder. So please do a couple if you possibly can. HUGE Thanks - ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 07:50, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

WP Classical Music in the Signpost

Thanks for your invitation. I'll try to get to this later. --Kleinzach 10:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

I've had a look, however I see you have asked people generally on the project and it's really a survey with pre-determined questions rather than a dialogue-interview, so I have some doubts . . . . FYI the various music projects (especially Classical music and Composers) were flourishing until the end of 2009. Since then there have been problems and a lot of the more experienced editors have either left or become less involved. (Of course I realize that this is common in many areas of WP.) --Kleinzach 02:30, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot, just a note to explain why I didn't answer the interview questions, despite your kind invitation. I'm not actually a member of that project, I just post on their talk page occasionally when I see an issue that might interest them. I'm a member of WikiProject Opera and sometimes I see something relevant when I'm checking for AfD nominations or possible new opera articles. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 14:03, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Public Policy Initiative Recruiting Assessors for Spring

Hi Mabeenot, Your work assessing article quality is really valuable and generated some excellent results from fall semester. The assessment process has been streamlined and dates are clearly posted for the upcoming assessment rounds. The Initiative has a lot more classes signed up for spring, so I would like to recruit some more Wikipedian assessors, and I was hoping you could help with that. I think community members would be more likely to participate if they are recruited by Wikipedians like yourself who have a good reputation. The strategy that worked last semester was to leave an individual message on the talk pages of non-adversarial Wikipedians. I looked for people by contributions to public policy related articles and those active on the 1.0 Editorial Team. I usually mentioned in the message what specifically about their work history made me think they would be a good assessment team participant. This is super time consuming to contact like 50 people, but only doing a few is not so bad. Also, I am looking for feedback about assessing with PPI, so please check out the discussion on the assessment tab, and let me know there if you have a chance to recruit some other assessors. I hope you are looking forward to another great semester working on this project. Drop me a line - ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 06:55, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject United States Government

Greetings. I noticed that you are one of the members of WikiProject United States Government that are still active so I wanted to ask you a question. It appears that this project is mostly inactive aside from what the members might be doing independently. I was considering suggesting that this project be pulled in under WikiProject United States and wanted to solicit comments from some of this projects members before doing so. As with Washington DC and the others the project would for the most part maintain its own independence but I believe this would benefit both projects. What do you think about this? --Kumioko (talk) 00:02, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Assessment with WP:USPP is the ultimate!

hi Mabeenot,
A new assessment round is posted. This round is mostly starts and stubs, so evaluation should be really quick. WP:USPP Assessment 2.1
The Public Policy Initiative is super exciting this term. The topics are really interesting this term and the student's are producing some really good quality content. Recent numbers indicate that our project is actually contributing a significant amount of content to Wikipedia. There is a group of about 20 subject matter experts who are assessing, but the Wikipedians are so consistent, that I really need your scores to measure article quality.
On another note, are you going to Wikimania? I am looking for people to co-present with, so let me know if you are! Best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 20:54, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Signpost question

Hi Mabeenot, Happy holidays! Just a quick question for those who are copyediting the WikiProjects page in Signpost. What level of language are you trying to achieve? Are you happy for responses to use casual language to the point of utilizing smilies, etc.?Or do you prefer it to be more formal? Just wondering as I was about to do the latest interview and I'm not sure which direction to take. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 06:50, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I've finished WP:CRICKET here. I did a rough layout to guage how many picture I would need. Seven editors responded and it was a bit long, so I copied the style from the WP:SHIPS article. Hope that's OK. As this is my first article, I would appreciate any comments, feedback, criticism, etc. Let me know what you think, and also what you would like me to work on next. I think I can do 1 or 2 articles a month. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 16:17, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Forgot to mention that it will need some further polishing and a full copyedit from an uninvolved copyeditor. – SMasters (talk) 16:19, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Mabeenot, I have moved Spaceflight to this week's issue but I need your help with the sidebar and final sentence that you do so well. Also, is it OK for me to go ahead with WP:WikiProject Mathematics? – SMasters (talk) 14:22, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Can you please help me write this week's final sentence? Thanks! – SMasters (talk) 15:52, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi Mabeenot, I have moved WP:WWF to the article space. Can you please help me with the sidebar and final sentence as usual? Many thanks. – SMasters (talk) 05:05, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
I thought a bit about Microformats, and there are a number of pics that you can use – spider web (for the internet/HTML); signatures, calendar, banners, an atom, recipes, something related to geo-location, etc. These can all be used to illustrate the article, with good captions to explain what they are illustrating. Just a thought. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 06:25, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

New Assessment for article improvements with PPI

hi Mabeenot,
Another assessment round is posted. This round is the follow-up to the previous assessment, so it should reflect some big improvements to the articles. WP:USPP Post Assessment 2.1
There is a group of about 25 subject matter experts who are assessing, and last week I sent them a tutorial video on how to leave comments on talk pages. So if you see any newcomers on the discussion pages, please help me welcome them.
You are doing a really amazing job, in fact, here at WMF, we are using your ratings as the “gold standard” to test the Article Feedback Tool and see how well it works. I will be presenting lots of research in the coming months. Best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 21:15, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

WP:POST/WP swap

Hi Mabeenot, hope this finds you well. I need a favor. My grandma is gravely ill and I have had to be with her out in the country over the last week. Because of this, I'm way behind in my article for the next issue. I see that most of your interview for Board and table games has been done. I'm wondering if it's possible to swap my dates with you, so that I can have a bit more time to work on my article. I haven't even started the interview yet. Appreciate if you could let me know soon. I hope to be back in action later this week. Thanks! SMasters (talk) 09:05, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

WP:POST/WP

Hi Mabeenot, I'm so sorry I haven't been very active in the last month. I'm still swamped with work in RL, and I need another swap favour. I see that Aircraft is nearly ready. Can we do a swap? I will start WP-Books today, so I can run it next week. Do let me know. As to your other question, I will do something for the 27th. Thanks in advance. – SMasters (talk) 08:47, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

No problem. I was beginning to worry something had happened to you. I can get the Aircraft one ready, although WP-Books may be ready in time for publication. Headbomb has said he can answer the interview questions in the short deadline for this weekend and he's by far the most active member of the project. You've already written the questions, and I can help finish it for publication. But if you'd still like more time, we'll go with Aircraft. -Mabeenot (talk) 15:14, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
OK excellent. Let's play it by ear then. Yes, my work in RL has been mad, and I have had to work on multiple projects for my clients, even on weekends! :-( In these difficult economic times, I count myself extremely lucky but my free time has been very limited. Hopefully this will cool down soon or I hope to hire some additional assistance. Thanks for your understanding. – SMasters (talk) 15:30, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2011-06-06/WikiProject report

I kinda wish the history behind {{Wikipedia-Books}} had been mentioned in the coverage of Wikiproject Wikipedia-Books. I created it and {{Wikipedia-Books link}} back in April 2009 when RichardF was attempting to add wikilinks from articles to the book subpages which were originally located under Wikipedia:Books (later moved to the dedicated Books: namespace). A few editors mistakenly thought such cross-namespace links were forbidden and had reverted many of RichardF's additions but creating those two templates helped fix that problem. --Tothwolf (talk) 02:50, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry if you feel your contribution was left out of the WikiProject Report. Cerejota created the project's page in March 2009 and contributed the first nine edits. This is why we credited Cerejota as the project's founder. We did not do an in-depth history of the Wikipedia-Books concept because that had already been covered in previous Signpost articles. At the WikiProject Report, our primary focus is on the WikiProject. -Mabeenot (talk) 22:27, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
I suppose, although without the templates I'm not sure the Wikipedia-Books concept would have been successful since people were removing the links. I forgot to mention the September 2009 TfD as well, which begins to show just how much uphill the entire thing was in the beginning. I guess I would just like to see credit given where credit is due. Without RichardF working to add the links in the first place, likely none of it would exist today (or at least in its current form). --Tothwolf (talk) 23:49, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
Writing Magnifying.PNG

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

re: Signpost interview

Hey Mabeenot, it's awesome you're interested in WP:ORE. But did you know we'd been interviewed before..? If you want to do an update that works too, but I just thought I'd point it out JIC. Steven Walling 02:58, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Philosophy

Hi Mabeenot, unfortunately, the response to the WP:Philosophy interview has not been good. I think we should be prepared to swap it with another one that is ready if it doesn't improve or work out. What do you think? Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 05:59, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

You spoke too soon. Looks like another editor posted some answers to the interview. We haven't got much in reserve, anyway. Two of my interviews have come up dry, so I've been searching for more options. Cheers! -Mabeenot (talk) 20:26, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
Ah, so I did! Good, I think I have enough to make something out of it. Face-smile.svg SMasters (talk) 21:23, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
I've finished the piece. Please help me write the end-blurb and feel free to change the headline if you can think of a better one. Thanks! – SMasters (talk) 02:52, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for adding the bits and bobs. – SMasters (talk) 08:02, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot, I would like to cover WikiProject Animation for August. Is that possible? I would like to do at least one story per month if that's OK with you. Thanks. – SMasters (talk) 06:36, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

How does August 22 sound? -Mabeenot (talk) 21:33, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot! I am sending this message to you because you seem to be the most active at the WikiProject desk. I have added a new suggestion. Request you to have a look. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 15:39, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot, just wanted to say thanks for the recent WikiProject Oregon interview. Sorry I didn't get back to it in time to add those last answers; I tried to make up for it in the comments section! Anyway, I appreciate your efforts to draw some good stories out of us =) -Pete (talk) 01:05, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Notable Arts Graduates

Hi Mabeenot,

I added a new page Notable Arts Graduates, linked it from Bachelor of Arts, and moved the stuff you deleted to it. It's admittedly my first Wikipedia page, so could probably do with some help.

I think it's worthwhile to compile a list of notable arts graduates on Wikipedia. It could be a very long list, though it could easily be pruned for noteworthiness or organised by country. The value in it is helping Arts students to find career inspiration. Frequently, BA grads feel as if there is no clear path for them. For the record, I'm a BSc grad (and think that occasionally, BSc students suffer from the same lack of role models). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard.a.russell (talkcontribs) 14:39, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Australian Politics

I am not going to contribute to your survey as my involvement with this project is slight. I have an involvement with many of the Australian Projects, but are not really very active in any of them as I am in a few other projects. I am not really in a position to answer most of your questions. I look forward to seeing the result. --Bduke (Discussion) 23:28, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Signpost help

Hi Mabeenot, can you please help me do this week's NIB and also work your magic with the ending blurb? If you can think of a better headline please go ahead and change it. Thanks in advance. SMasters (talk) 23:30, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Wow that was fast! Thanks so much. – SMasters (talk) 00:08, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. Always happy to help. -Mabeenot (talk) 00:11, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot, I've uploaded my article for this week. Again, if you could be so kind as to do the blurb, and if you have a better headline, please use it. The layout may be a bit out once the NIB has been put in, in that the right column may be longer on most computers than the left column. If this is the case, we may have to insert a quotebox of some sort into the left column. Cheers. --SMasters (talk) 23:58, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Signpost and WP:NRHP

Just one question — what's the deadline for the response? I'm planning to participate (thanks for choosing us!), but I simply don't know how to answer the second half of the first question yet: I'm on an out-of-town trip that involves visiting a lot of them, and I have to have a few days to add up my visits :-) Nyttend (talk) 05:13, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

He's blocked for about another month. I was going to suggest that he could answer on his talk page and you (or someone else) could copy it over, but I figured I'd leave that up to you before suggesting that on his talk page. Killiondude (talk) 22:56, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Interview request

Hello Mabeenot, I've long admired your work with Signpost and was wondering how would you like to be on the receiving end of an interview for a change? Based on your background with Wikiprojects, you would be ideal for a brief interview for our newsletter about what makes a successful Wikiproject. Feel free to be brief. If I need any elaboration perhaps we could schedule a Part 2. If you'd like to participate, just click the button below to start the interview, and THANKS!

Q

Hey Mabeenot, what did you mean in the interview when you said "Please describe the organization and planning behind the Bugle"? Did you mean formal positions or the division of the pages? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 01:36, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Both. Do you have an editor in chief or other assigned roles? What are the main features that run each month? Who decides when it's ready to publish? Etc. -Mabeenot (talk) 20:32, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
Okay, that's added. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 20:41, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Interview

Hi Mabeenot, I am a Wikipedian and researcher from Carnegie Mellon University, working with Professors Robert E. Kraut and Aniket Kittur. We’ve published many scholarly papers on Wikipedia and are partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation on several new projects.

I have been analyzing collaboration in Wikipedia, especially Collaborations of the Week/Month. My analysis of seven years of archival Wikipedia data shows that Collaborations of the Week/Month substantially increase the amount and nature of project members’ contributions, with long lasting effects. We would like to talk to Wikipedians to better understand the processes that that produce this behavior change.

We’ve identified you as a particularly good candidate to speak with because of your involvement with the WikiProject Universities' Collaborations, which is one of those we’ve been investigating. It would really help us if you would be willing to have a short talk with us, less than 30 minutes of your time. We can talk via skype or instant messenger or other means if you’d prefer. Do you have time at any point during this week to chat? If so, please send an email to haiyiz@cs.cmu.edu or drop a line on my talk page.

Thanks!

Signpost economics articles

If you still plan to write a wikiproject report on Economics you may want to get in touch with Jay Henry. He is no longer active but he was one of the more smart, grounded and interesting contributors to featured content in the Economics wikiproject. He does respond to talk page posts but you might have to try emailing him. I don't suspect he will return to editing any time soon but what he has to say about the general pros and cons of economics coverage on Wikipedia is still valuable.
