Current sports transaction template

Hello Oltrepier. I appreciate your willingess to help with transfer news about footballers. However, I just want to remind you that {{Current sports transaction}} is a template that should only be used for players that are involved in imminent transfers reported by the media. Simple speculation or rumors, or even seemingly confident reports from low-quality sources should not be considered in making this determination. A good example of where this template is appropriate is Hugo Lloris. You added the template on Leonardo Bonucci, Alessandro Zanoli, Juan Miranda (footballer), Edvin Kurtulus, Woobens Pacius, Gianluca Prestianni, and Almugera Kabar. Correct me if I made a mistake, but in none of these examples there was an imminent transfer widely reported in the media.
Basically, we don't want to abuse the usage of this template, because otherwise it becomes meaningless if every single player with a rumor has it on their Wikipedia page. Please take more careful consideration of news reports when adding this template. A good source (by the way) is Fabrizio Romano, if you don't know who he is. Anyways, happy editing! Paul Vaurie (talk) 20:25, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

@Paul Vaurie Hello, sorry for my belated reply and my mistakes: I admit I should have been way more careful at double-checking those bits of speculation... Of all the transfers you've cited, only AC Milan's deal for Miranda is likely to be completed, but even in that case there are no "advanced talks" to write about (yet), so I apologize.
Of course I know about Romano, as an Italian myself, but I suspect that most of the deals he reports on are already covered by dozens of other users here... : D
I'll definitely have a more cautious approach to transfer reports in the future, and I'll try to explain my decision better whenever I'll use the template -- actually, I've just done so for my edits on the articles of Vasilije Adžić (set to join Juventus) and Isak Hien (set to sign for Atalanta).
Thank you for your advice and Happy Holidays! Oltrepier (talk) 17:40, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Top Report

Saw the notification yesterday, but only read your e-mail today. Sure, seeing that idea spread over other Wikipedias can be very positive (most just put the ranking - I myself update the Portuguese list). The monthly periodicity even has the advantage of an easier source. igordebraga 23:00, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

@Igordebraga For sure, monthly releases should be a huge advantage for us, especially since we're just an "army of two" working on the project at the moment... : D

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Pageviews

I don't know how it works for everybody else, because I have no way of knowing exactly how much time any given chunk of text took to write, but for myself I've noticed a kind of inverse relationship between effort and pageviews. That is to say: the more effort I spend writing something, and the more critically important the subject is, the fewer people read it. Also, there are caveats like: lots of people read the single-page edition, lots of people read the email edition, lots of people read on signpost.news etc etc -- this is not counting API or spider views. If you want, you can try {{Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Templates/Tables/Author pageviews|whoever}} and see what you get, but I'd take it with a planet-sized grain of salt lol jp×g🗯️ 03:19, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Christos Metskas article (Italian translation request)

Hello, Oltrepier!

Thank you, again, for so kindly editing the article in English about my father, but I'm humbly asking you to also do a translation into Italian and publish it on Wiki whenever you find the necessary time for that. I hope you won't find my request too bold, maybe even exaggerated, given your previous effort. Knowing which your native language is, I would consider unrespectful from my part to publish myself such a translation, done primarily by the help of an online automatic translator, but having little knowledge to be able to correct or improve it. Thank you!

I wish you health! CristianMetcas (talk) 12:13, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

correction: unrespectful = disrespectful (sorry) CristianMetcas (talk) 16:13, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
@CristianMetcas Hello! You aren't exaggerated at all by asking that: I'd actually love to do it! The problem is, I likely won't have much spare time to work on full articles in the next couple of months, so I can't really guarantee you anything for now. I'm so sorry...
On a side note, the Italian Wikipedia has stricter criteria for footballer bios than the English Wikipedia, mostly related to the number of appearances in national leagues and international tournaments: however, I think this might not be an issue, given your father's career in the Romanian top tier. Oltrepier (talk) 17:45, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
I understand you completely! You are most likely attending university courses and have to study. However, your answer gave me hope, so, unless you manage to find the necessary time to do and publish the Italian translation until then, I will contact you here in May to remind you about my request. I wish you health and success in your daily activities! CristianMetcas (talk) 17:54, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
On a side note, as you might've already noticed, a Greek (from Greece) considered highly important to place that "autobiography" template message on top of both the English and Greek versions of the article ... Although I understand the importance of carrying for the accuracy of the content, which I also did and will always do, even though I don't plan to publish any other article or to make any edits to other articles, I feel that some users like to play the policemen instead of carrying more for the enriching of the encyclopedia's content, especially in some languages that still lack it compared to English. CristianMetcas (talk) 18:03, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
@CristianMetcas To be honest, I think it mostly had to do with conflict of interest, and that user likely added the template in good faith, so it shouldn't be a glaring issue.
Anyway, thank you for understanding! : ) Oltrepier (talk) 21:13, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
I made the Greek translation by the help of an online translator. Even though I speak Greek only at a basic level, I was still able to identify some of the errors in the translation but there are most likely others. I agree about the good faith of that user but he should've also try to correct those errors, not only to alert everyone by placing that template. After all, I have tried to find all the online existent references about my father and you added them beautifully. You surely understand that all of my father's career as a footballer and coach took place during the communist era of Romania, which ended a decade before you were born. The communist block was almost like a closed world for the west and, even though some sportsmen managed to be known outside, like those who competed in individual sports, by participating at some international events (championships, olympiads) there still weren't the communication and opportunities there are today. I don't know of any performant footballer, Romanian citizen by birth, in the Division A/ Liga I of the communist era to have managed to transfer himself to a club in a foreign country, unless he flew Romania. In Romania he wasn't even paid by an actual "club" with a proper such identity, but he was in most cases the employee of some factory, even though he didn't actually work there. Factories had "sport associations" alongside them, but with no juridical personality. That episode about my father joining Olympiacos, almost ten years before I was born, could've happened only because he wasn't a Romanian citizen and the communist regime allowed in such cases for the person to leave the country, aside of the fact that, at least locally, my father was a very known and appreciated sportsman. Anyway, I'll leave you know and hopefully won't bother you until May. Be well! CristianMetcas (talk) 06:56, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
know = now (sorry);
still, even during communist era Romania, some of the team sports were named by using the "club" word, like the football team of UTA was; there were "workers' clubs", but with no juridical personality CristianMetcas (talk) 07:04, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
@CristianMetcas Thank you for clarifying, and see you soon! Oltrepier (talk) 12:56, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello, Oltrepier!
I hope you're well. I'm sending you this message in order to remind you about my request for you to translate the article about my father, Christos Metskas, into Italian, since you're a native speaker of that beautiful language.
However, I'm bringing to your attention the fact that, in order to match the truth, as it is written in the book at reference [10], there must be done an important correction to the second phrase of the first paragraph of my father's managerial career in the English version of the article.
So, instead of:
"Between 1972 and 1974 he worked as coach of Gloria Arad,[2] afterwards in the 1974–1975 championship he coached Stăruința Dorobanți,[2] and since 1975 until 1979 he worked as assistant coach of Strungul Arad, the main coach being Emanoil Gherghel.[4]"
it should be:
"Between 1972 and 1974 he worked as coach of Gloria Arad[2] and in the 1974–1975 championship he coached Stăruința Dorobanți.[2] Since 1975 until 1979 he worked as a coach of the republican juniors' team of the club Strungul Arad and in the 1975–1976 championship round he also worked as assistant coach of the senior team of the same club, the head coach being Emanoil Gherghel."
Everywhere else in the text of the article "republican junior team" should be replaced with "republican juniors' team".
The correction concerning the managerial career should be also made in the infobox, as you can see in the Romanian version of the article.
I hope you'll seriously consider to make and publish the Italian translation, after you make the aforementioned correction(s) to the English version of the article.
I assure you of my full consideration in your regard! CristianMetcas (talk) 16:56, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
@CristianMetcas Hello! I hope it's all good.
First of all, I need to apologize for being so late: lately I've been quite overwhelmed by real-life priorities, as well as other tasks here on Wikipedia, to the point I almost forgot to reply to you. I'm so sorry...
I've just integrated your requested edits in the article, so it should be good now! About the Italian translation, I fear I won't be able to work on it in the next few weeks, since I still have to deal with study duties and other stuff, but I'll definitely keep it in mind! Another issue is that the Italian Wikipedia has stricter notability criteria for footballers and coaches in comparison to the English Wiki, being mainly based on a minimum number of appearances in a top-tier (or second-tier) national league, but I think your father should meet those standards quite comfortably.
Sorry again for being late, and see you soon! Oltrepier (talk) 20:12, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for everything you did! I hope that one day soon I'll read on Wiki the Italian translation/version of the article about my father done by you. Be well! CristianMetcas (talk) 12:34, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Dear Oltrepier,
Below there's the video celebrating 70 years of the Romanian club UTA's existence (in the year 2015) and you can see my father speaking at the times I selected:
https://youtu.be/S0iOvTYwqGo?t=978 (he speaks about the legendary player Pecsovszky/Petschovschi)
https://youtu.be/S0iOvTYwqGo?t=3565 (he speaks about an important match)
I thank you, again, for everything you did, for kindly approving and extensively editing the article on the English Wikipedia, but an Italian version of the article would be much appreciated.
I wish you success in your studies! Be well! CristianMetcas (talk) 08:02, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello, again, Oltrepier!
I make known to you that I created a Facebook page for my father, Christos Metskas, where I will upload photos (and videos) of him (some of them are already uploaded). While the videos will be those already uploaded on his YouTube channel but which are in Romanian, the photos can be seen and "understood" by anyone, regardless of the language(s) one speaks. There will also be a side explanation of each photo in both Romanian AND English.
Maybe you could find a way to add the link to his Facebook page to the Infobox in the English version of the Wikipedia article, you so kindly edited. You can choose one of the two links below (I would choose the second one):
the link to his Faceook page - https://www.facebook.com/christosmetskas.official
the link to the "Albums" section of his FB page - https://www.facebook.com/christosmetskas.official/photos_albums
Thank you very much! CristianMetcas (talk) 06:24, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
@CristianMetcas Hello, thank you for letting me know! I'll definitely check those out and see if I can add anything to the metadata! : ) Oltrepier (talk) 07:20, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of members of the European Parliament (2024–2029), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page N1.

AVS MEPs

Hi! For your draft list: the MEPs of AVS. If I remember correctly than Salis, Lucano and Guarda will join the Left Group, Marino, Orlando and Scuderi the Green Group. Cassandro (talk) 18:59, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello! I think Guarda is actually a part of the Green Party, so she might be swapped with Orlando, but I'm not sure about that...
Still, it's indeed very likely that their MEPs are going to split in those two European groups. I can't make these edits right now, but I'll go ahead as soon as possible. Oh, and thank you for flagging that official announcement: I would have never caught it myself! : ) Oltrepier (talk) 20:17, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
True, Guarda is from EV, so 4-2 to the Green Group, or 3-3, depending on Orlando. I was counting Orlando there because in the 90s he already sat in the group but we will see where he will go. Cassandro (talk) 21:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
@Cassandro That's right, actually! I guess the next few weeks will bring us some needed clarity...
Anyway, thank you for your help! Oltrepier (talk) 10:53, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
You're welcome. :-) Cassandro (talk) 11:15, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
In the end, it became a 4-2 but someone began to edit the list on the main list page. Is the final tally already done in Rome? Cassandro (talk) 15:23, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
@Cassandro Not yet, I'm afraid, but like I wrote in the discussions over that talk page, the list of Italian MEPs is almost complete at this point, so it's not a big deal if someone starts adding those names up! Oltrepier (talk) 18:54, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

In that case, I added most of the MEPs (bar one party). :-) Cassandro (talk) 20:31, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

@Cassandro Good, thank you! Oltrepier (talk) 20:35, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

@Cassandro and Oltrepier:: Hey there, I'm the one creating the full list of MEPs in the German Wikipedia (and the country-specific lists as well, like the Italian one). First of all, thanks a lot for your work here on the English Wikipedia, it has helped me a lot! Would you mind pinging me when the last 4 Lega MEPs are sorted out, so I can finalize the list of Italian MEPs? I was trying to find any information on them, but my Italian is rather limited, and seems to be difficult to find the exact info. Thank you! --Jcornelius (talk) 17:26, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

@Jcornelius Hello! Thank you for the feedback and the hard work you've been putting in, as well!
There's no official news on that front at the moment, but I'll definitely let you know about any updates! I should point out, though, that it's also unclear whether Flavio Tosi (of Forza Italia) and Marco Tarquinio (of DemoS, but elected with the PD) will take their respective seats or not; the former might still give it up in favor of Sandra Savino, whereas Tarquinio and Alessia Morani are still "fighting" over a slot due to the technical issues affecting local electronic systems in Rome, which forced poll-watchers to count votes from more than 70 sections all over again. DYK for Radiosoul

On 10 July 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Radiosoul, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Alfie Templeman described the style of his studio album Radiosoul as "incohesively cohesive"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Radiosoul. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Radiosoul), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Richiesta per pagina italiana per Jeff Ekhator

Buon pomeriggio, Oltrepier!

A presto! Oltrepier (talk) 17:26, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
