today: violin solo and you can listen Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Storye book (talk) 14:54, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yesterday I attended a unique concert - the 18th Thomaskantor after Bach conducting - and with some good luck caught him happy afterwards! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:20, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well done - great photo! Storye book (talk) 21:22, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
... and another concert 14 July: Voces8, pictured - I have a FAC open, in case of interest --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:31, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! And thanks for the pointer to the FAC. I don't think it needs my help - it looks fine to me. Storye book (talk) 08:02, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
fine - more July songs, from Swiss Alps and a funeral - want to look at a DYK nom for an opera singer, with the usual participants? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:14, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the songs. I'll look later at the other thing (Central heating engineers have turned my house upside down this week - lots to do, clearing up). Storye book (talk) 17:32, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

August songs
I agree with WH ) -pics and thoughts on 13 August --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:17, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
and on 15 August: "my" concert of the year (so far) is on the Main page, but not pictured, and I don't understand why --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well done, getting your concert on the front page! Storye book (talk) 19:58, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It was one I listened to, and enjoyed tremendously, - Rheingau Musik Festival, presenting Voces8 a week later. The encore was Dona nobis pacem, to the music of Bach's Air, and I thought how wise, but then found that Biller had made that arrangement, - so not only a comment to a current war but also a bow to the predecessor. - Good to see your tenor on the Main page today. I read the article on a train ride, and found a few things I had missed before ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:18, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that, and thank you for your corrections. Storye book (talk) 19:37, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The last week brought more outstanding concerts and bike tours, - how is your summer? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:42, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the link. Glad you have enjoyed the concerts and bike tours. I am in the north of England, so we have had more rain here than in the south (which is where I come from). The weather here is quite pleasantly cool at the moment. However, where I am, we are expecting water rationing at the end of this month, and electricity cuts during the winter. I remember that from the 1970s, and it was not a problem, but then I had a hearth in the house. Today, many people don't have a hearth, and non-smokeless fuel is not permitted anyway. It will be much harder now for a lot of people to cope without heating during electricity cuts. Storye book (talk) 21:01, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for sharing! - the church where I heard VOCES8 and more discoveries --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:59, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the church where I heard VOCES8. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty - like a fairy tale church! Storye book (talk) 15:55, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Rogers Covey-Crump

[edit]

On 17 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Rogers Covey-Crump, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rogers Covey-Crump. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Rogers Covey-Crump), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Wrong image

[edit]

Someone has called conflated two different John Jolliffes. The picture has been changed to the wrong person and the John Jolliffe who was Bodley’s librarian has nothing to do with the Asquiths. He has born in Hastings in 1929, parents Willam Benjamin Jolliffe and Gwendolen Ada Mary Gadd. He was my father and I am going to undo the edits that have conflated his entry with someone else MaryPercival (talk) 18:42, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MaryPercival: Is this John Jolliffe, Bodley's librarian here? If so, I can add a thumbnail of the face part of the image to the article, using a particular licence in accordance with WP policy. If that is the wrong picture, then can you give me a link to an online picture of the correct John Jolliffe (librarian)?
Meanwhile, please note that as the daughter of John Jolliffe (librarian) you have a conflict of interest when editing the article, and that needs to be declared in accordance with WP policy. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. I note that you have added his parents' names, which may not appear in the existing citations. If you are unable to confirm with citations that your added facts appear in the existing citations, then your edits are not verifiable and may be deleted. Storye book (talk) 20:12, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(watching:) "may" be deleted, but why not take advantage of family knowledge? It's not like adding wild claims about achievements. Mary, please explain on the article talk that you are the subject's daughter, and exactly which facts you added based on what, such a birth certificate in your hands. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:17, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]
September songs

... that your clarification and diplomacy on DYK is much appreciated? In case you meant a formal approval, it would need a tick. I had 4 music items on 11 Sep, DYK, singing in church and Verdi rehearsal, and listening to a mezzo in a synagogue, and a choir in Unionskirche, both pictured, - Tag des offenen Denkmals? Interesting mezzo! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Also, thank you for the links. Excellent. Storye book (talk) 13:18, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! More if you like. The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto, and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:38, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on all those DYKs. You are very strong, to hang on in there in spite of certain reviewers. Keep up the good work! Storye book (talk) 08:43, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am not strong, I am only interested in passing information to readers ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:51, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, whatever it is, you are valued for it. Storye book (talk) 08:56, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My first barnstar was for resilience, during my first weeks on the project ;) - which could also be called defiance or stubbornness. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:34, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for my second of the kind! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:24, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

((Hugs)) Storye book (talk) 18:42, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

feel hugs! - today, we sang old music for two choirs at church, pictured, scroll to the image of the organ of the month of the Diocese of Limburg (my perspective), and if you have time, watch the video about it - I nominated the second piece - the mass - for DYK, with a rather plain hook, - his 12-choir Te Deum would be more spectacular but is lost, - only the rave reviews extant. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:26, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The Schutz? When I was in certain choir concerts in the 80s, I used to hear Schutz played a lot. Very exciting. Simon Lindley directed us at that time, and he was the organist. Storye book (talk) 07:22, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! ... and today I wrote an article about music premiered today, Like as the hart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:09, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Did you know nominations/Danylo Matviienko, lingering --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:17, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done.Storye book (talk) 16:00, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! - ... and yesterday I wrote Who shall separate us? and today we enjoy Spannungen (tensions, sparks ...) - chamber music --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for those links. I enjoyed the Who shall separate us at the service on TV. It worked very well. Storye book (talk) 16:08, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - travel and strings sound --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have another DYK, different reviewer, and perhaps really could use a better hook, - not "my" article, just rescued from draft and nominated, - look for Hanke. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I have very limited access to broadband at the moment, and none for the pc where I do all my WP work. If you can send me a direct link to the relevant DYK template, I might be able to edit it briefly via my phone. Email me to get a quicker response. Storye book (talk) 17:22, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, nothing urgent. [1] for Matthias Hanke. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:31, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

October music

[edit]
October songs

Today is Erntedank in Germany, thanksgiving, and we celebrated our village's 650th anniversary, and had the dress rehearsal for Verdi's Requiem with an interesting band of marimba, piano, horn, bass, timpani and drum, - concert tomorrow, our national holiday. Seeing a pic I took on the Main page was also a nice harvest. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Super. Glad it all went well. Storye book (talk) 20:22, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
some relaxed pics today --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:10, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! :-) Storye book (talk) 21:17, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for coming to the rescue of Talia Or, while I was out taking more pics! - Today another pictured DYK (but not pictured by me this time): look at power work tensions (if you translate) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:51, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great article about the turbines. Loved it! Storye book (talk) 12:00, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I missed the Hart article template previously. Done it now. Storye book (talk) 21:10, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I nominate Silvia Hauer now, a day late, so will need mercy that a certain reviewer would not grant, and help with what the critic wrote. Mr. Stern went into great detail about the conductor's bravery, and the politics of the piece, but wrote little about the soloists, + it's in German and a paywall. He wrote: Über dem Chor "leuchtet ein starkes Solistenquartett", then giving the names. Is there a better word for a vocal "leuchten" than "shine"? He also wrote, now about the women only: "... überstrahlt von den Stimmen ..."! What would that be in English when meant positively? ... something with radiance? Anyway, I wasn't happy with the reviewer's lack of giving each of four wonderful singers with personal character a specific credit. There was a lot of drama, and then the unison of the two women opening the Agnus Dei which was out of this world. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:10, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A day late is usually OK on DYK. I'll look at it this afternoon, UK time. Storye book (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Storye book (talk) 14:27, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the world ;) - sweet music on my mind, going to rehearse that soon today, for a circus performance on Sunday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:33, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nice one! Storye book (talk) 14:41, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just the beginning. - Language question: "outshine" sounds to me a bit like a competition in brilliance, but it's given in the composition that the soloists shine even more than the choir (not the orchestra). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:46, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, my mistake. I have corrected it. Storye book (talk) 14:52, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Next round, - will that ever end? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:01, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I try to find sources for a composer who died, all in Spanish, resulting in flowery translations ;) - I'll return to the hymn DYK when done or given up. Sleep first. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, good luck! Storye book (talk) 07:56, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
sleep was good, we have a singer on the Main page who had almost only Romanian refs, so there's hope ;) - I found I also have a DYK singer to nominate, - while one day late is no problem for almost all reviewers (imagine the rest) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:10, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. The Nicolesco article must have been a challenge. Well done! Storye book (talk) 08:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article was there, just many refs dead. Would you find where the La Scala archives went? I hate them all for reorganising websites. first Bayreuth Festival - hundreds of links for singers' bios broken - and more recently Gasteig, with all sources for their concerts gone, and I doubt they even created an archive. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:52, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For La Scala archives, try this? Storye book (talk) 09:35, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are such a gift! - I was there, but failed to see that they have a special search for artists. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:57, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to be of help. Storye book (talk) 09:59, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
today's DYK: two facts from the two concert of this years Rheingau Musik Festival I liked best, both a cappella singing. If you follow the songs, you see a circus, where I performed singing, and in the end the whole tent joined for Dona nobis pacem. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, how lovely. Well done! Storye book (talk) 22:04, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
... thank you, and the good luck for the Spanish composer also happened! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:32, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good news! Storye book (talk) 08:37, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yes, and more: who shall separate us --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:11, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That was a lovely one. Thank you for uploading the article. Excellent. Storye book (talk) 19:42, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Imagine to wait 11 years for a premiere ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:58, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. And as with all personal artworks, after a decade you notice all sorts of faults in it. I bet he tinkered with it, a bit, over the years. Storye book (talk) 20:12, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are lucky to hear these musicians live. Such a different experience from recordings. Storye book (talk) 07:06, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yes, I feel blessed, that hall, four opera houses close-by, the locations of the RMF, "my" churches" (two lists I should update), and all attractive to the artists of the world --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:59, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
leaving the month with reformation and a cat treat --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:22, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cute! Is that your own cat? Storye book (talk) 17:29, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A fortuitous meeting then! Storye book (talk) 17:38, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Memorial Chapel, Hastings

[edit]

The story of this short-lived chapel, the façade of which still exists, is fascinating: I've been researching it recently in connection with the various works of Thomas Elworthy. There's too much in the way of "original research" needed for it to be suitable for Wikipedia, so I'm intending to write a study for possible external publication. There is some very interesting "scandal" associated with the chapel and its founding minister! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:07, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, scandal. Excellent. Let me know when it's published, please? Storye book (talk) 20:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will do! It will take quite a long time to see the light of day, though, I suspect: needs a trip to the RIBA archives, among other things. Elworthy did a lot of good work in the Hastings area, so I want to do him justice! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:49, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a worthwhile project. Your local Civic Society may support you. Storye book (talk) 02:55, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
