Woke

Your Spanish source clearly fails our criteria, it says “ In a landscape dominated by left-wing, biased and unprincipled media, El American emerges as an attractive alternative for all Hispanics completely orphaned of reliable information and framed in an openly honest editorial line: we believe in freedom.” Doug Weller talk 16:16, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

What are you talking about? What criteria? Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 23:13, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
6175 edits and you don't know about our criteria for reliable sources? See WP:RS and WP:VERIFY. Or take it to WP:RSN. Doug Weller talk 08:20, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
I don't see anything wrong. If it's bias that concerns you, why do we have so many citations from sites like CNN? Dailymail and Fox News are banned here. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 09:02, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
There's a huge difference between this and Cable Network News. Fox isn't actually banned (deprecated), the Daily Mail is. This is a minor mention by what seems to be a fringe publication. I've removed it. Please don't edit war, just go to RSN if you disagree. Doug Weller talk 09:20, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Seri Wati Iku.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Seri Wati Iku.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 10:30, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Sure. I'll try to get those done by the end of the week. My main focus is the minor parties, however, but I can try and make maps for the Coalition and Labor too. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 06:24, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Translations in first sentence

Please stop adding translations to the first sentence of so many articles. Please take a moment to read MOS:FIRST and MOS:LEADLANG. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:58, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

I'm allowed to add them in the infobox and lead section. MOS:LEADLANG says: "By the design of Wikipedia's software, an article can have only one title. When this title is a name, significant alternative names for the topic should be mentioned in the article. These may include alternative spellings, longer or shorter forms, historical names, and significant names in other languages." Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 21:08, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

List of firsts in government moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, List of firsts in government, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Hello, Thiscouldbeauser,
If you don't understand how templates are used on Wikipedia, then please do not create them or create them as some sort of "test". They then require that an editor tags them for deletion and admin spend the time to review them and see if they should be deleted. So, it is a waste of other editor's time. If you want to experiment, please do so in your User space like your Sandbox or, if you are working on an article, in Draft space.
If you have questions about any of this, please bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:30, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Templates

Hello, Thiscouldbeauser,

Why are you creating all of these templates? They will just be deleted through some form of deletion as they aren't appropriate because they aren't countries. Think of the time you are wasting for other editors who have to deal with them. Please focus on constructive editing. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:30, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Most of them are regions, which are allowed. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 04:13, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Unsourced

Please refrain from adding unsourced translations of airport names. For an airport to have an native name, say in Irish, it needs to actually be used by the airport. It cannot just be something someone translated. For the airports (and anything else) in Northern Ireland all non-English names need to be sourced and used per Wp:IMOS. In fact you're going around, and being reverted by multiple users, just translating names into other languages. Just doing a translation for an entity isn't valid, it must use it and must be sourced. Bare URLs

If you make references to some Māori dictionary, please don’t introduce bare URLs. Use properly formatted citation templates instead. WP:Bare URLs explains why it’s a problem and although it’s stated that it can be used, what it means though is that another editor needs to tidy up after you. Thank you. Replaceable fair use File:Perrottet basketball.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Perrottet basketball.jpeg.

Inappropriate

This edit is inappropriate. Not only is it not about the article subject, it's not humorous to make fun of people who do not identify as male or female. And it is certainly not humorous to put that in Wikipedia's voice which is extremely inappropriate. Do not do such things again. Canterbury Tail talk 21:51, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Coordinates

I see that you've been adding {{coord}} templates in the infoboxes of Australian locations. Unfortunately. you've not been formatting the template correctly, treating decimal coordinates as if they were coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds. In Coramba, New South Wales, for instance, you formatted the coordinates as "30|22|17|S|153|01|44|E", whereas the coordinates -30.2217, 153.0144 are equivalent to about 30|13|18|S|153|00|51|E, since a minute is 160th, not 0.01, of a degree and a second is 160th, not 0.01, of a minute. You've also been neglecting to delete the {{coord}} templates that were already in the articles, resulting in overlapping coordinate displays in the title position. Thanks for telling me. I have found a website that does it correctly. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 00:29, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

Double-Check

Hi there,

Really great work you've been doing with the 2023 NSW election page over the past few days. I just created the post-electoral pendulum for it and was wondering if it was okay for you to check over it? My eyes are starting to water a bit!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Post-election_pendulum_for_the_2023_New_South_Wales_state_election GarbageKarate (talk) 04:58, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Sure. I'll have a look at it now. By the way, you should consider creating a user page. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 05:04, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Okay, my first suggestion is that when the results are finalised and we can get notional two-party-preferred results, we use the notional result for the margin in Port Macquarie (an electorate I know a fair bit about Port Macquarie because I've lived there before) and add a note for the Liberal vs National result. Why I think this is because at this election, there were two Coalition candidates: the incumbent National-turned-Liberal MP Leslie Williams and the independent-turned-National Mayor Peta Pinson (I expected a Liberal vs National contest because it is a very Coalition-leaning area). Williams won the seat and I doubt there will ever be such a contest there again and because it's two Coalition parties, I think we should base the margin for this electorate on the margin against Labor and put a note giving an alternative margin (i.e the Liberal vs National margin). Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 06:00, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Sounds like you've got this under control and the expertise, as you've lived there before. I have created a user page (finally) and thanks again. GarbageKarate (talk) 12:01, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Pauline Hanson's One Nation

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload files. However, it appears that one or more of the files you have uploaded or added to a page, specifically Pauline Hanson's One Nation, may fail our non-free policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted file of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:04, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Please don't add or re-add any more non-free files to Pauline Hanson's One Nation#State and territory branches. Non-free logos are generally fine when used for primary identification purposes in the main infoboxes or a the tops of the organizations they represent, but trying to use them in other ways or other types of articles is much harder to justify. The use of non-free logos for individual entries in list articles or list-like tables, in particular, is pretty much never allowed per WP:NFCC#1, WP:NFCC#3, WP:NFCC#8, WP:NFLISTS, WP:NFTABLES and MOS:LOGO. Now, having posted that, it's quite possible that the two files you uploaded don't need to be licensed as non-free content. If that turns out to be the case, I will clean up the files' licesning accordingly and re-add them to the article. For now, the files are OK as files used in the stand-alone articles about the respective branches they represent so nothing more needs to be done with respect to those articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:04, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Since File:One Nation NSW logo.webp, File:One Nation Victoria logo.png and File:One Nation WA logo.jpeg seem to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law per c:Commons:United States#Threshold of originality even if they're still protected under Australian copyright law, I've changed their copyright licensing to {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} for local use on Wikipedia and re-added them to the table. However, even though the use of the files is no longer subject to Wikipedia's non-free content use policy, they're still subject to MOS:LOGO; so, please keep that it mind when adding to Wikipedia pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:55, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Greetings

I have a few Tasmanian articles on my watch list, and am interested if you could talk to the style of map being used, in some mainland states, and with no necessary consistency of any sort between states, osm is used. Thanks. JarrahTree 08:22, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

You can use both the locator map and a map from OpenStreetMap. For example, the article about Glenorchy, Tasmania (a suburb of Hobart) has both a locator map showing its location within Hobart and an OSM map. Hope this helps. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 08:27, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm a bit busy at the moment, plus my reception isn't great (I'm not home at the moment). To answer your question, there is an entire article about it. He was a member of "The Clan", which was the WA branch of the National Right. Furthermore, Goiran has social conservative views, thus placing him in that category. "which was the WA branch of the National Right". Citation needed. I have not come across a source which says that during my research into the Clan. "Goiran has social conservative views, thus placing him in that category." This is original research. We shouldn't place Goiran on that list unless there is a source which explicitly says he is part of the "National Right" faction. Steelkamp (talk) 07:28, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

National Party of Australia leadership elections

Hi, please don't save half-finished content as you've done at National Party of Australia leadership elections. The article is virtually unreadable now - better to work out on it draftspace and then move once. However, I also don't see the point of adding infoboxes for unopposed elections. We're never going to be able to expand those elections into more than a few sentences so it's just unnecessary clutter. ITBF (talk) 07:08, 14 May 2023 (UTC)

Requested move 8 May 2023

Hey, I saw that you moved the articles at Talk:New South Wales National Party after judging that there was a consensus in favor of moving. In the future, it is best to not do that since your performance of those moves after judging consensus is the equivalent of a non-admin closure of the discussion in favor of the move. Only editors who are uninvolved in a discussion should perform a such a closure due to concerns over conflict-of-interest in participation (WP:NACINV). Although you were correct in that there was general consensus in favor of the move, it is good practice to wait for someone uninvolved in the discussion to close and carry out its result. The Night Watch (talk) 15:28, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

%'s on NT by-election pages

So we disagree. That's fine. Rather than getting into an edit war please tell me why you are so keen to out the percentage sign in there given that the row is entitled "percentage"?

Benawu2 (talk) 08:13, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

For consistency. Every other election article is like this. In short, putting 50.0 just looks bad, whereas 50.0% or 50.00% doesn't. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 08:15, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Cheers and carry on.
Benawu2 (talk) 08:15, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I will soon. Currently I've added them for all NT by-elections since 2000 and I'll work on the 20th century ones soon, as well as some from other states and of course federal by-elections. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 08:18, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

About political parties in local government in Western Australia

There are several reasons this is a bad idea:

  1. Its pretty much useless when only a very small number of local governments even make public the political affiliations of their councillors. There are Labor, Liberal and Greens councillors all over Western Australia, but they don't publicise that. This means that any attempt to add local councillors to the political party pages will perpetually be laughably incomplete.
  2. Political parties don't endorse candidates for local government elections.
  3. Poltical parties have no way of controlling how councillors vote.

As an aside, I recommend you start using edit summaries more often. It makes it so its easier to tell what the purpose of your changes are. If you are making minor changes to infoboxes, its hard to know what the benefit of that edit is without an edit summary. Steelkamp (talk) 04:37, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Okay. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 04:50, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Local government infoboxes

Hi! I know the person above me just chastised you about this, and it isn't my intention just to do that again lol. About 3 weeks ago I left a comment on the talk page of the Vic Liberal Party about the local government infoboxes you've recently added. These have clearly had a lot of effort placed into them, and as such I don't just wanna start unilaterally removing them. However, I do think they're a bit unnecessary and I think a discussion about them would be helpful, especially on a public talk page so others can join in. I would very much appreciate if you replied to my comment over there so we could do that!

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your contributions in general. You're doing great work! Loytra (talk) 09:06, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Thiscouldbeauser! I saw you just created Template:Chinese barrelled name. We had consolidated all the name hatnotes into {{Family name hatnote}}, so to keep everything there, I'd encourage you to propose that that template be modified rather than creating a new one from scratch.

Separately, I saw that you redirected titles like {{Korean name}} to {{Western name order}}. This doesn't make much sense, as the former templates that were there are now at {{Family name hatnote}}, and to avoid giving default preference to hatnotes over footnotes the most neutral destination is {{Family name explanation}}. I retargeted to there, and if you recreate any other titles you should do similarly. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 14:52, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

I created the Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese name hatnotes as redirects because the Hungarian name hatnote is a redirect. Chinese, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese all use Eastern name order (e.g Xi Jinping in Chinese is formatted Jinping Xi, Fumio Kishida in Japanese is Kishida Fumio, Viktor Orbán in Hungarian is Orbán Viktor, etc). Newcastle Airport

Hi there, I reverted [edit] on the page for Newcastle Airport as the Virgin Australia service to Auckland ceased during the COVID-19 border closures and was abandoned by the airline's new management after emerging from administration as it was deemed to be unviable under the new business model. This has been documented in various places online, including aviation news sites and industry publications, including this one:

And there is passing mention that no international carriers serve the airport (and "previous" seasonal service to NZ in both of these:

I also note it's no longer listed as a destination, seasonal or otherwise on the airport's own website. Problem is, the airlines, airport and media only report widely on the "good" news, the withdrawal of such services is generally done with much less fanfare! Dfadden (talk) 13:12, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

I'm not really convinced. It looks like they will return (and it is set to become an international airport full time by 2024) and it's winter, not summer. Also covid restrictions are over now, so let's wait and see. I think keeping "international airport" in the lead is still reasonable. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 23:31, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
I agree that keeping Internation Airport in the lead is reasonable, especially given the upgrades underway. I can tell you with 100% certainty that the Virgin flights to New Zealand are not just suspended due to the season and aren't likely to come back in the short term as there is little capacity to expand, especially into marginal routes (this came directly from a Virgin 737 pilot who flies their international routes, but that's not something that can be ref'd). I don't think that leaving Auckland in the dest list is appropriate per WP:CRYSTAL, but it's easy enough to put back there should the flights return at some point in the future. I do thank you for your edits about the expansion and helping to keep the article up to date though! Dfadden (talk) 02:33, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
Okay. But yes, keep the international airport bit. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 02:33, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Requesting immediate attention. Either my account has been compromised, this IP was once used by an idiot or this is a mistake. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 21:19, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
This news has destroyed my morning and now I'm gonna have a shit day. I've done nothing wrong and this request will probably be denied because nobody here has any empathy or understands anything. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 21:24, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Well, now I've edit my fucking user page to something you wankers think. Fucking asshole. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 21:25, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
I will fix this shit somehow. Or not. Who knows anymore. Nobody's gonna even look here. Accusations stick like a pile of shit, so my guess is I'm fucked. I apologise for any harm my edits or my existence have caused. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 21:28, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Your situation is not good, Thiscouldbeauser, because it is hard to refute the conclusions of a checkuser investigation. But have some patience, your unblock request will be responded to at some point. Liz Read! Talk! 21:42, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Template:Tanzanian English requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2021_March_6#Template:Akrotiri_and_Dhekelia_English. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:19, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
