[edit]

On the disambiguation page Wow, I added a link to WP:WOW, forgetting that I had linked Willy on Wheels before and not noticing my change had been reverted. The next change to the page, by User:SchmuckyTheCat, was summarized as "rv" for "revert vandalism." Do mistakes count as vandalism? --Gray Porpoise 20:10, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it doesn't. According to Wikipedia:Vandalism, "Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism." --Gray Porpoise 20:13, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be curious to know how this company passes WP:CORP. If you see how it does, then please include this information in the article. Otherwise, it looks like it should be deleted as non-notable. Rklawton 20:52, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trading Spaces?

[edit]

I will overhaul your userpage. Give me an idea of some colors you like, any specifications you want, and that sort of thing. I will post edits directly onto your userpage. If you decide you don't like something I did, you can let me know what I can do differently and I will by happy to do it. Just to let you know, I am currently working on improving my own userpage, making it more complex, etc, so my userpage is not the best example of what I can do. Heavy Metal Cellisttalkcontribs

I would prefer dark green sections with red borders, perhaps an image of a porpoise somewhere. Thank you! --Gray Porpoise 12:30, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, excellent! I love it! --Gray Porpoise 22:23, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I added a little thing just before I posted the new code that says that I created the page through Esperanza's trading spaces program. If you want, I can delete it. If you have any other changes you would like me to make, I would be happy to do so.Heavy Metal Cellisttalkcontribs

Questions for others

[edit]

Does anyone know of some accurate translation sites that can help me to expand the very small Wikipedias, such as Navajo? --Gray Porpoise 17:53, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, where can I learn how to create a Wikipedia bot? I'm no computer programmer. --Gray Porpoise 14:45, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's recommended you never use machine translations to contribute to Wikipedia - even the results of the most accurate sites are more often that not, awful, and off-putting to readers. As for creating a bot, you'll need to learn a programming language. I personally recommend Python, as it's the language that the pywikipedia framework is programmed in, and many people on this site can use the language. If you decide to use pywikipedia, you can often run a pre-made bot (provided as part of pywikipedia) without much programming skill involved. Cheers, Tangotango 15:52, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:My 42 is in (Base 13) was indef-blocked as a sock of User:Imacomp, so either M42(B13) is another abusive sock from the same family, or an impostor being controlled by a separate editor. Both are blockable offenses, so you were right to point this out. -Hit bull, win steak(Moo!) 15:41, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

You have taken part in the AfD process for List of successful automobiles and voted delete. The decision was unanimous and the article was subsequently deleted. Now a corresponding article, List of automobiles that were commercial failures, is up for deletion for the same reasons. It would be only logicial and just to have them both deleted, so I cordially invite you to take part in the new discussion.

Regards, Bravada, talk - 09:09, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

I am writing to inform you, and many others, that an AfD in which you voted delete, List of automobiles that were commercial failures, was already unsucessfully nominated a short time ago, but under a different title. This was not noted in the nomination. Please read the opposing arguments here, and reconsider your vote, because it is important that the opinions of previous voters be considered. Thanks! minor edit

[edit]

You are talking about pen name, aren't you ? I just added what you suppressed when reverting the modifications the IP made so I considered it a minor edit. I did not add any content myself, which is the mark of a real edit to me. Koxinga 21:57, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

on Wikipedia:Minor_edit, it is written that removing vandalism should be considered minor edit ... I consider that the two edits you are talking about are just correction of vandalism so it is minor according to this definition. Of course, I am not very active (did you notice the hobbit one was seven monthes ago ?) so I may not be aware of a different consensus among wikipedians but if it is so, please change the help page ... Koxinga 22:24, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. : And you are right, is it midnight here ;o)
P.P.S. : And concerning discussion between two wikipedians, I tend to mark it minor as the other wikipedians are not concerned but is it a good practice ?

Ramsquire:RfA

[edit]

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I never really kept track of the number of edits because I didn't think it was important. I fear that if I start counting edits, then the quality of the edits will decline as I'll just start typing crap to meet my quota for the day. I will attempt, however, to be more broad in my experience at Wiki, look to contribute in more articles and see where it leads. I do have to admit though that I am a bit disappointed that raw numbers means so much more than a long history of solid behavior and edits. I've been here for two years and certain editors are saying I need more "experience". It just shows me that to too many it is just a number's game. Ramsquire 00:55, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

[edit]

RE: Blcok

[edit]

Hi, you make a fair point. But I would say that one could break down any sequence into such components. Almost every day an account such as User:asdfasdfasdfasdf is created, these too can be similarly broken down. Given the numbers used, it would seem likely the numbers were simply the most conveniently available on the keypad rather than imbued with any significance. Be this as it may, numerical sequences over four or five are almost always blocked as usernames as they are very limited in their ability to fulfil the duel purposes of identification and aiding communication. I hope this helps explain where I am coming from. Yours, Rje 00:44, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your comment on Meta

[edit]

I would really like to hear some further explanation of this your comment about insignificance of the Serbian language. Here is my thought about that. Thanks in advance. -- Obradović Goran (talk 19:58, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I haven't voted yet on this matter, since I don't know a lot about the concepts that Wikiversity is to be based on (and thus don't know if I personally will find the time to engage in this project). However, this doesn't make your rhetorics any less stupid. The commonlyness (what-ever-do-you-mean-by-that) of the given language is not in very strong corelation with the activity of the language's wiki-projects. Economic (how many people have the Internet connection..), cultural, social, and many other (rather non-deterministic) factors are very important as well. Because of that, it is not advisable to pass random predictions about the future of some wiki-projects (even if you are an expert for the language and culture of this project, and I somehow doubt that you are an expert for Serbian language). -- Obradović Goran (talk 05:16, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are so many examples for this. If somebody asked you few years ago about the Polish Wikipedia, you'd probably say that it is not going to grow very fast. Yet, it has grown rapidly. Today it is larger than Japanese, Italian, Spanish and Portugese Wikipedias! Polish language has far less speakers than any of these languages, and Poland could hardly be compared with these countries (Japan, Italy..) by economic standards. How this happened? As I said, there are a lot of factors. It is hard to tell which community will evolve faster. Another example is Serbian wiki-community. We managed to organize ourselves, have regular meetings, and to organize our local chapter before USA, Switzerland, England, Australia, Spain, Japan, Netherlands... Would you predict two years ago that we will manage this before Japan? I think not. Yet, we did it, fifth in the world! -- Obradović Goran (talk 05:16, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And one more thing. You said: I just believe that we should focus on the development of the English, German, Chinese, etc. Wikiversities before we start a Serbian language one. It sounds as if starting of Serbian Wikiversity could threaten the development of Chinese Wikiversity!? Would Gray Porpoise waste too much of his time working on Serbian Wikiversity, as well as all the other speakers of English, so English Wikiversity could be ruined? -- Obradović Goran (talk 05:22, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for the message! Actually there was nothing in the paragraph worth keeping. The comments regarding Manta's jumping into boats is something of a fallacy. Generally born out of a fishermans excuse for 'accidentally' sinking his own, generally dilapidated, boat. You will note on the article page this image:- Image:P2140268 Manta Ray.jpg. The Manta shown is of an average size for its species, approximately 16 foot from wing tip to wing tip. Mantas have exceptional sensory organs and are fully aware of what is around them. They tend to keep well away from any boats, yet will allow divers to get really close, provided they stay low, preferably on the sea bed. The one in this image actually circled around the photographer and several companions for over an hour, whilst feeding on plankton. On four occasions it stroked its left wingtip across the photographers head, whilst hovering. That I know for a fact as I was the photographer. I have only once seen a Manta breach and that was in open water, off Africa. It did so as it was being attacked by a large shark, not to get rid of loose skin, or parasites, as some claim. Small 'cleaner fish' and shrimps do a far better job of that function, at cleaning stations, for much less energy output with less risk of injury, than breaching could ever do. They tend to be a slow moving fish and breaching takes some doing at their weight, every time I have dived with them they departed whenever boats were directly above them, even non motorised ones. Admin?

[edit]

Have you ever considered running for Admistratorship? I have seen your edits and they are great!!!!!!! You really should consider, you would definitly get it:). By the way how am I doing (for a newcomer at least) Let me know on my talk page.--Seadog.M.S

Thank you

[edit]

Thank you for the support, I am very busy in real life and I don't think I have the time to beacome an administrator (my spelling is terrible). If you have not already noticed I have gotten blocked before, I made a dumb mistake on another account and I got banned. In a period of a day I got unblocked by a very nice admin called Netsnipe. You can see the whole story on my talk page. Could this hurt my chances of earning Administratorship. If you run for admin or get chosen to please let me know so I can support you.
P.S I am a hindu even though I am not an Indian, over the years the events in my life have lead me to hinduism, I have a lot of family members tell me I am going to hell, so over the time I have become very accepting of other faiths. I adore Christs teachings and try to follow them (expecially the Sermon on the Mount). Please feel free to add your name to my Wikifriends list on my userpage. Have a nice day/night--Seadog.M.S 12:17, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do you find out the exact number of edits that a user has I do not know how many edits I have and I deffinatly do not want to count manually--Seadog.M.S

Thanks, apparantly I can't either. I have found out a new tool recently called Random Article. I have been using it to contribute to various articles, it really goes to show you how many bad articles there really are.--Seadog.M.S
Thanks, that seems like a better idea. I just used it and I saw this one. Apperantly it is a hindu article and I fixed a coulple of things but it is a mess what would you do. Here it is--Seadog.M.S 18:46, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother, but I have a question that I have had for a long time but never got around to asking here is the question, Who was Willy on Wheels and I sometimes hear the Phrase Vandilism on Wheels what does this mean? Thank you for ansering (dang it I can't spell) my question, I was going to Nominate you for admin a couple days ago but I didn't because you would probably want someone with more Wiki experience to do it instead. Sorry to bother bu I have found a vandal who should be watched very carfully or blocked. His username is vulgar and he has vandalised around 7 times (and this vandilsim is terrible). He Vandalised Tom Bradys article and put him down a mass murder and Molester and vandalised my favorite Philosopher Mahatma Gandhi and blanked the whole page and put him down as Hitlers closest friend I really do not know what to do with him. Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Gray Porpoise, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Again, welcome to Esperanza, hope to see you around for the next Caption Comp! Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 10:28, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you're confused

[edit]

I think you're confused about the caption competition. A), I wasn't a judge, I was a competitor, and B) it's ended. It ended about a month back. We'll probably start a new one soon, though, so save your contributions and enter them next time. Hope that clears it up! Bye. DoomsDay349 02:29, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Coaching

[edit]

I've removed your request to coach editors from Wikipedia:Esperanza/Programs/Admin coaching, because, unfortunately, only admins can coach editors, hence the name Admin coaching. If you would like to be coached, then add your name to the bottom, and when you finally become an admin, I'm sure you'd make a great coach. Sorry, Highway Grammar Enforcer! 13:50, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, that rule isn't exactly publicised. I've checked, and there are only a couple of non-admins on the list, and both have been active on Wikipedia for over a year. If you still want to coach, then I guess its in the rules, but I think the extra 6 months, often gained by admins, would greatly help your coachees. Highway Grammar Enforcer! 14:38, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming Good Faith (in response to your message)

[edit]

The user in question had made clearly vandalistic in nature revisions to the article President of the United States (renaming treaties to "THE TREATY OF BALLS," changing Pres. Clinton's name to a vague obscenity, etc.). I was under the impression the assuming good faith was more applicable to the -content- of a vandalism warning, rather than the edit summary. Am I wrong? The content of the warning was the kid-gloves Test1 message, so I assumed that was the essence of AGF right there.

Vandals

Thanks for the warning! Deleted so many attack pages in the last 5 minutes all from one shared IP. --Davard 13:56, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I noticed that you joined Esperanza, I am a member too.--Seadog 23:03, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes communication is very good. Well not alot has happend, I have been busy as usuall a little while back I nominated Hinduism for the FA which is doing "okay" It can be found here and my userpage has been vandalised alot recently. My experience has also rised to a very high level here on Wikipeida (not as high as yours however) I have helped out users who have requested it from me. Thank you also for setting up a Doppleganger acount on User:Seadog.MS. And as usuall I have been fighting vandalism (not as much due to the fact of School). And I changed my sig to something unique. :-) Have a nice day/night.--Seadog 00:18, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I like your sig but if I could make a suggestion maybee you should change your "e" to something darker that way it will stand out more from your other green letters. The only thing different about mine is the fact that I have a different font-face from most users, on wikipedia the font-face used in the articles is called Trebuchet MS (I think so or Sans Seriff) and all I did ways go to microsoft word and choose the font-face I wanted. You can see exactly how I do mine by just copying of of mine and to be honest I copied off of others sigs.-_Seadog 01:08, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiPlomacy

[edit]

Everyone I've seen who is involved in WikiPlomacy has a section like this on their talk page, so here's yours. Congratulations! You have officially gotten involved in the oddest yet funnest MMOTBSG I have ever seen. The acronym comes from MMORPG, or Massively Multiplyer Online Role Playing Game. Thus, the Massively Multiplayer Online Turn-Based (Is it? Well, it's certainly not real-time) Strategy Game. Anyway, I would like to offer an alliance between the Veriocracy and the Union of Cetacea. I like whales/dolphins/porpoises, and our philosophies seem compatible. AlethiophileAsk me why 03:27, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Hello friend

[edit]

Hiya Gray Porpoise, it's me Seadog. I just wan't you to know that I am going to be signing my posts as Arjun now, due to many reasons and my name is currently waiting to be changed (to word on it yet from the crats), also I have changed my userpages and talkpage around. You may want to think about archiving your talk page. I have already done mine twice. Take care.--Arjun 21:32, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well to be honest yes, during the last couple of days I have been an important figure in the Hinduism wikiproject. I have had to end a dispute between editors (which is doing fine now) the wikiproject was running great and then one of the senior members got blocked for spaming (a week block). He went to everybodys talk page (Hindu's and Indians mostly) and let everybody know about a comment made by an editor. The editor made a very bad comment about the practise of Sati in Hinduism. But now he has been unblocked by a very kind administrator and he is doing fine now. Do you know how an article becomes featured? I nominated the Hinduism article a while back and now it has more Support votes than Oppose votes, but it has been setting there for a while. Is there a deadline? Thanks see ya around.--Arjun 21:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats on learning some Latin, very interesting language. The latin wikipedia looks cool! I am learning Sanskrit, Hindi and even Chinese. Yes my head is spinning.. Good luck and cheers!--Arjun 21:46, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a better intro for the cetaceans portal would be useful. I wrote a quick one but don't think its too great, i have a bit too much dissertation work to do to really mess around with it. Could you have a look and maybe edit it a bit to make it better. Other than photo credits (which i have fixed) that is the only thing that has been brought up so far about the Portal on the nomination.

And also, i have found a way that i think we would be able to have a selected article once every two weeks, which might be better as once a month is a bit slow. I won't bother implementing that until the nomination is over, but i thought i would just mention it to you.

Cheers Chris_huhtalk 13:33, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
