License tagging for Image:Union Suit02.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Union Suit02.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Question
[edit]Just curious...do you mind if I ask why I so frequently see edits from you in which you add a second period to the end of a sentence and then remove it a minute later? Bearcat 00:04, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi Bearcat, when I finish editing with something on wikipedia, such as the List of radio stations in Ontario, I wait at the top of the hour to add and remove the a second period at the end of the sentence so I can set the page as last modified at the top of the hour each time i finish editing. I guess it doesn't matter what time i finish editiing. My apoligies.
- No worries, just wondering if there was something that was confusing to you (like cache clearing problems or something of that ilk.) For what it's worth, there's no technical reason why it's necessary to have an edit at the top of an hour. The article's edit history retains every edit anyway, so there's nothing special you have to do.
- By the way, "CHATHAM44" isn't even possible as a radio call sign in Canada, because it doesn't fit any of the possible call sign conventions for a radio station. That might be the on-air brand name that the station uses, although if I do a google search on "Chatham44" all I get is a condo in New York City. But it can't be a call sign if it has nine characters in it. Bearcat 06:01, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Also, a couple of helpful hints for when you start a new article about a radio station:
- if the article is short, add Canada-radio-station-stub at the bottom (though don't do this if you can write something as long as CFTR or CHNO right off the bat),
- add a format category (see Category:Radio stations in Canada by format for the options) and a location category (Toronto and Ottawa have their own city-specific categories, while the rest of Ontario is divided into the geographic regions listed at Category:Radio stations in Ontario. There's no reason why other cities can't have their own city-specific radio categories, though — it's just that nobody's created them yet.)
- for larger ownership groups such as Rogers, Newcap, CHUM or Standard, add a corporate ownership category too (Category:CHUM Limited, Category:Newcap Broadcasting, etc.) Smaller companies like Haliburton or Blackburn don't have their own corporate categories, but again there's no reason why they can't — just nobody's created any yet.
- once you've saved the article, add RadioStationsProject to the talk page.
Hope that helps a bit for now. If you want to start creating new geographic or corporate categories, let me know and I'll help you learn how to do that. Bearcat 06:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Little context in Pelmorex radio network
[edit]Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Pelmorex radio network, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Pelmorex radio network is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Pelmorex radio network, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 10:11, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Page formatting
[edit]User:Bearcat/List of radio stations in Ontario is a personal sandbox page which I'm using to purposely experiment with ways to improve the page formatting without disrupting the real article in the meantime. It isn't in article space, so nobody will ever come across it unless they purposely go looking for it. So please don't undo the formatting on it. Thanks. Bearcat 13:30, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I apologize, I was trying to update the experimental page that hasn't been updated since April 10th, 2007. I think you should consider "locking" any personal sandbox pages to prevent anyone else doing the same thing I did. That personal page you using for experimenting, I had found it through the google search engine via some radio station. I'd thought I would like to help out on updating the page for you because it could possibly disrupt the actual "List of Radio Stations in Ontario" page and if you really improve the current article, it could also make the "List of Radio Stations in Ontario" page "outdated". Again, I apologize. I'm trying my best to update the page(s) as much as possible. I know there are new radio stations that might be coming to Sudbury, Ontario and any other communities in not only Ontario but across Canada, that are yet to be approved by the CRTC. I know it's something that doesn't happen overnight...it's indeed a very long process before an approval. I've also been updating, editing and adding some external links to other pages besides anything related to radio. Thanks for the recent message regarding if I needed any help on making or editing any articles, etc. I would appreciate that. Take care! :o)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:IM000029.JPG)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:IM000029.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Non-free use disputed for Image:Cigm 210x155.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Cigm 210x155.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 01:50, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent contribution removed content from CKPT (AM). Please be careful when editing pages and do not remove content from Wikipedia without a good reason, which should be specified in the edit summary. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. Thank you. A tag has been placed on FM 88.1 radio stations in Canada, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template hangon
to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Captain panda 02:20, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
"TV stations by channel number" categories
[edit]Please don't create categories for redlinked channel numbers until there are actually real articles to file in them. License tagging for Image:Johnnyolson.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Johnnyolson.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Fair use rationale for Image:Banner.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Banner.jpg. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot (talk) 07:14, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:IMG 0324.JPG
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:IMG 0324.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 15:00, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:MCTV 1980s.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:MCTV 1980s.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of WLYK, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: WBDR. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 13:35, 3 March 2008 (UTC)\
Radio Disney in Toronto
[edit]User:Nathan Williams has a rather long history of creating hoax articles about radio stations that have never existed. If you come across anything that sounds suspicious, please bring it to my attention as soon as possible. Bearcat (talk) 20:02, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- Cool, nice job...You'd never get Proud FM out by the airport anyway; it's a pretty low-powered signal that doesn't even generally get to Etobicoke, as far as I know, let alone Mississauga. Hell, I live in Cabbagetown and I can't even pick it up on my stereo, although I know other people who can, and I have heard the station playing in stores or offices in the neighbourhood. And I don't get anything on 95.9 or 101.7 either, but given that I can't get 103.9 despite living within walking distance of their studio and I get none of the AM stations at all, I can't and don't trust my stereo as the primary authority on whether a radio signal exists or not.
- CFBN is defunct, yes. I guess the Toronto list got missed when the other ones were updated. But it is permanently off air as of late last year.
- I have absolutely no idea why Nathan keeps creating hoax radio articles. He's been warned countless times, but keeps on doing it anyway — when he gets called on it, he stops for a while, but then starts up again a few weeks later. So I wouldn't count on him stopping permanently — but it's not worth blocking him, either, because the one time he did get blocked he just kept right on going with a different user name. Until now his hoaxes have all been in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, though — Toronto's a first for him. He's occasionally written up articles on real radio stations, too, so we can't just automatically delete anything he creates without double-checking it first, but I've also learned a few tricks to watch for:
- The owner is usually "Alarm Broadcasting" (which doesn't exist). He might also occasionally use a real company instead, but then criterion #3 below applies.
- If he posts a logo, it's a really bad, amateurish one that looks like somebody's first assignment in a college Intro to CorelDraw course.
- Links from other articles, lists and/or templates were added by him personally shortly before or after the article's creation and didn't already exist as redlinks.
- The call signs used to sometimes be a dead giveaway, too — he doesn't seem to do this anymore, but he used to sometimes give his hoax stations impossible call signs like "CYMJ" or "CTKS", or call signs that are actually already in use somewhere else in Canada.
- Hope that helps a bit... Bearcat (talk) 18:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MCTV 1980s.JPG
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:MCTV 1980s.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 12:41, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Richard dawson.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Richard dawson.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

A tag has been placed on CJAZ-FM, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
--RyRy5 (talk) 02:34, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

External links in country articles
[edit]What are these? They are not in English, so how do they help our readers, here, in the English Wikipedia? Thx. El_C 08:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
- Please stop adding the links until I get to review your explanation, which you have yet to provide. In addition to my reversions at South Korea, Latvia, Japan, and Kuwait, other admins have already reverted you, at France, Greece, Cuba, Hungary, and Iran. Now is a good time as any to explain what these links are and how they benefit the encyclopedia. Thanks again. El_C 08:53, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I think the confusion is that you're just adding the website with the url as the title, or one that is simply a generic welcome to [country x], etc.
Official links (by respective State) are certainly fine for country entry, just make sure to: a. link to the English page (a lot of these will have one).
b. As I mentioned elsewhere, add a more descriptive title, one that includes who is behind the site along with a brief three-four word description. El_C 09:12, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Image:1863031491 736d97196a b.jpg
[edit]A tag has been placed on Image:1863031491 736d97196a b.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [1], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:
- state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
- add the relevant copyright tag.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. seicer | talk | contribs 16:51, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use Image:Priceright500.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Priceright500.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add

, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 21:21, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Recnet
[edit]For a rebroadcaster with a number, it's not necessary because the recnet search will actually go to a list of all the transmitters from which you have to choose the one you want anyway. Bearcat (talk) 06:39, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'm of two minds about that; it seems to me like in some cases it might overwhelm the article, and yet from a content perspective there's no good reason not to do it. Give me a day or two to figure out how to add a column for recnet links to the rebroadcasters template instead. (There's definitely a way, because the US equivalent template includes the FCC search links.) As for CHIM-FM, I think the tourist info stations should probably be spun off to a separate article instead of being discussed in that one, since their programming isn't the same. They probably don't each merit their own article, but one article about the bunch of them might be a good idea. Bearcat (talk) 07:05, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Good news...it's all sorted out. And it's easier to do than we ever could have imagined, too — when you're using the RadioRebroadcasters template, all you have to do is add "rec = true" to the first line of the template, and it automatically produces the correct recnet link for each call sign. New drama in radio
[edit]New set of troubles in the radio department. A user created a complete set of "radio stations by frequency" lists, accessible from the RadioByFrequency template. Unfortunately, however, he used some wildly outdated sources for the Canadian stations: for just a few random examples, he listed the station on 101.1 FM in Smiths Falls as CHEQ-FM, a call sign it dropped in 1993. Some rebroadcasters are listed in the format "CKJF12F-FM", whatever the hell that means. Stations that flipped from AM to FM as much as 15 years ago were listed on their old AM frequencies and call signs. And this is my favourite of all: he listed — wait for it (I fell off my chair laughing!) — CKO transmitters.
Or, I dunno, maybe my favourite ws the fact that the VOxx sticks in St. John's were being listed as American stations. Or, no, maybe it was "Iqaluit, Northwest Territories".
So, in a nutshell, we need to do some major updates and revisions on the Canadian stations. I made a few random additions and changes here and there to some of the lists, but then I started methodically comparing each list to the "Radio stations by province" lists to make sure I was correcting everything. At this point I've completely revamped all of the AM lists from 530 through 1210, but it's getting tedious and I could use some help on 1220 to 1700 and the FMs. Can I enlist you to help out a bit? If you can't, that's okay, but if you do, keep me apprised of which lists you're able to finish. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 06:55, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Bayshore
[edit]I made a couple of minor style adjustments, but it looks good otherwise. By the way, re: CIGM conversion, just so you know, we don't actually have to add three or four or five references for the same statement; one (or occasionally two) is usually enough. Bearcat (talk) 08:15, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Also, by the way, we should always write contributions in the straight past tense ("so-and-so applied") instead of the past perfect ("so and so has applied"), so that the statements don't look dated if we forget to update them later. You'd be surprised how many articles I've come across over the years in which something that happened two or three years ago was still reflected as being a future occurence, such as "she will be a candidate in the Canadian federal election, 2006" (I seriously, no joke, had to fix that very statement in at least two different articles in the past week alone), because nobody ever came back to fix it after the event was over. CHFR
[edit]Would you please care to explain why you removed the frequency from the Northern Vancouver Island template. Thanks. єmarsee (Discuss) 20:11, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi there, sorry I wasn't sure what frequency to put in for CHFR-FM, I believe they now operate at 96.5 FM, instead of 91.5 FM so I left it blank because I wasn't quite sure. I checked the recent CRTC decision on CHFR Hornby Island and its at 96.5 FM as of 2007, while Recnet says it operates at 91.5 FM which may be outdated. Once again, i'm sorry. The next time i'll leave it until I make the official change(s). User_talk:Webfan29 20:18, 24 January 2009 (UTC).
New stations
[edit]Just so you know...I'm not sure where you got the idea that internal comments in articles should be enclosed in "includeonly" tags — those are actually for controlling whether or not the categories that are applied to templates should be transcluded into the articles that the templates are added to. If you want to add hidden comments to articles, such as clarifications about moving articles to the call sign once that's confirmed, the actual format for that is to start the hidden bit with <!-- and end it with -->. Hope that helps a bit. Bearcat (talk) 02:12, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Non-Iqaluit stations in the Iqaluit Radio template
[edit]Please check your geography before adding any more stations to this template -- you added two stations that were from Rankin Inlet -- over a thousand miles from Iqaluit. -- azumanga (talk) 00:24, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Radio rebroadcasters
[edit]While linking to the original CRTC licenses for each individual transmitter is helpful referencing in rebroadcaster lists which are still in purely text format, we don't need them in the lists that have been converted to the RadioRebroadcaster template, and thus have direct recnet links in the article. The article isn't meant to serve as a directory list of every CRTC decision that ever pertained to the station, no matter how trivial or minor it was; we only need to link to CRTC decisions that directly reference a specific statement in the article. Bearcat (talk) 01:46, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea to integrate licensing information into the text of the articles, which we could then use the license links to reference — we just don't need to link to the licenses in the rebroadcasters table itself. Bearcat (talk) 08:25, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, forget what I said there. I just looked at the equivalent US template, and it actually offers an option to provide a direct link to the FCC entries in its own column alongside RadioLocator links, instead of having to nest them in ref tags. Give me a day or two to work out how to add a similar column for the Canadian stations; we can leave the existing ref links alone in the meantime. Bearcat (talk) 15:30, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- Done.
- At the top of the template, where it says "recnet = true", add a line for "crtc = true". Then for each individual transmitter in the list, add crtc1 =, crtc2 =, crtc3 =, etc., and move the license link from the ref tags after the city name into that field instead, but don't enclose it in ref tags in the new field. To keep the field proportionally sized, link it so that the display text is just the decision number itself; e.g. 2000-164 so that the link displays like this: 2000-164.
- I've already updated CBSI-FM, so that gives you a sample of what it'll look like. (You'll notice that I've also changed the recnet column so that instead of displaying a sequential number it displays the word "Query" on each link.)
- The advantage of this is that we can also add just an unlinked year, if we know that but not the individual license number (e.g. if CCF has a year listed in its history), and we can also add a license number without a link in the unlikely-but-still-possible event that we have other source access to that information. Though for what it's worth, we should generally only provide the primary decision number for each transmitter — where there's an AM-to-FM conversion, we should provide that document number instead of the license for the defunct AM. CFWH and VF2161
[edit]Something doesn't make sense about the VF2161 transmitter in Haines Junction — the CBC already has an owned transmitter there. So why on earth would the Yukon Department of Infrastructure and/or the CRTC feel the need to duplicate a service the town already has? Do you have any ideas on this one? Bearcat (talk) 06:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- No, it's not your mistake. Initially I thought it must be wrong, because the CRTC site was down and I had no way to check the license — but when the site came back up and I was able to check the license, it actually is for a CBC North rebroadcaster. Which is why I'm so confused: why would the CRTC or the Yukon government do that? Bearcat (talk) 20:14, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
CKTY-FM
[edit]Hi there,
I've just done a bit of random article improvement on CKTY-FM - I got to it from Special:random.
I did this, this, this and this. I'll try and do a bit more if I can.
Any questions, give me a shot on my talk page, or talk to us live.
I did these edits as part of a little 'campaign' idea I had - see User:Chzz/10.
Cheers! Chzz ► 20:16, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit]When it comes to article titles, the question isn't "is there more than one in the world?", but "are there any others that are actually notable enough to merit their own encyclopedia articles?" — even the one in Sudbury isn't notable just for existing at all, but only because of its ranking in the Ontario's Worst Roads survey. CIGM
[edit]Yowza. Shouldn't stunt formats be a little more, I dunno, coherent? :-) Bearcat (talk) 19:07, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, that's certainly a much more coherent stunt format than classic rock mixed with nature sounds. Bearcat (talk) 16:06, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, a few reasons:
- Toronto can't even support a full-power commercial FM station playing Chinese pop music 24/7; the multicultural stations here are all non-profits with program schedules that are as diverse as possible. And if Toronto can't pull it off, Sudbury with its much smaller Chinese community surely can't either.
- It was a stunt when WVHT did it...with pretty much the same website and logo and some of the same hosts!
- Notice how afternoon DJ "Felony Doll" sounds almost exactly like Q92's morning host "Mellanie Dahl"?
- Notice how if you go listen to the live stream, the title still comes up as "NCCTEST"?
Trust me: it'll be a more conventional format (my guess would be CHR) on Monday morning. Bearcat (talk) 19:30, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- And the fact that the person who just attempted to edit the article to remove the reference and the stunt statement just happens to have the same name as the afternoon guy on Big Daddy... Bearcat (talk) 19:38, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Using a stunt format for a few days is a pretty common move when a station is going through a big change (format, frequency, etc.) — the whole point is to get people talking and going "what the HELL?", and just generally get more word-of-mouth going than a simple launch would. WVHT did "Kung Pao" for four days in the midst of a rock-to-CHR shift. Last year, CHAM in Hamilton stunted Christmas music for several days — in August! — while switching from oldies to talk. The year before that, at least two radio stations in the US played the song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" on constant repeat for three days straight.
There's actually a whole article on stunting on here if you want a bit more depth.
Just so you know, though, I put a four-day page semi-protection on the article to avoid any potential vandalism in the meantime. Anonymous IPs and newly-registered usernames like mattysamps won't be able to edit the article, but editors with established edit histories still will. I just wanted to let you know because I know you don't always log in to edit — at least until Monday, you'll have to log in if you want to edit that article, because it'll block you if you're editing as an IP number. Bearcat (talk) 03:19, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't know how much stock to put in it, but somebody whose IP number resolves to the federal Ministry of Human Resources edited Media in Greater Sudbury today to claim a CHR format with the branding "Hot 93.5" (which would line up with the branding of Newcap's CIHT-FM in Ottawa.)
I don't know if that's inside information or just wishful thinking. It is pretty much a foregone conclusion that it's going to be either a CHR or a hot AC — I called that about seven minutes after the CIGM/CFDR swap was originally announced last summer — but I don't know if that person really knows what the branding is going to be, or if they're just making an assumption. Although, come to think of it, if they're really hinting at the permanent format being "hotter and spicier", then "Hot 93.5" it just might be after all... Bearcat (talk) 00:24, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Sudbury Wolves
[edit]I was actually just dealing with that :-)
It doesn't belong on CIGM's article at all (they also added a link to CJTK's web page, which really doesn't belong!), but it's probably okay to briefly mention it on CJTK's. I haven't gotten to the team's article yet to see what he mucked up there. Bearcat (talk) 06:02, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
CKMP
[edit]Fixed. Just so you know, the problem was that if an article title is already in use, a regular user can only move another article on top of it if the target title is a redirect with only one edit in its page history — if it's been edited more than once, then an administrator has to do the move. So if you come across any more like that, you have a couple of options:
- Let me or another administrator at Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio Stations know,
- Tag the target title with PAGE TO BE MOVED.
Hope that helps a bit... Bearcat (talk) 00:23, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks so much for the catch. I can't definitively state that it's an instant delete, but I'll take it to WP:CWNB for extra input. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 04:37, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Pending applications
[edit]Please don't create articles about radio applications which haven't actually received approval from the CRTC yet. The baseline criterion for notability of radio stations is that they are duly licensed (with the exception of very unusual circumstances like Mix FM Ottawa, but that's gotten unusual media coverage that most pirate stations never get). We also can't assume that just because an application has been filed, that the station will necessarily be approved. Once a station gets a license, we can create an article about it, but merely having applied for one doesn't automatically confer sufficient notability to justify an article on here. Thanks. You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 01:08, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
I have nominated your article, 99.9 FM Gananoque, Ontario, for speedy deletion for its lack of importance.
Please add more information to your page and then remove the nomination.

File copyright problem with File:NYPD Police Cruiser August 15 2010 IMG 4607.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:NYPD Police Cruiser August 15 2010 IMG 4607.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Acather96 (talk) 15:55, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
The article 96.9 FM Innisfil, Ontario has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Need confirmation that this planned station actually happened.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Marcus Qwertyus 22:14, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't "deleted the article", I've prodded it and then listed it at AFD. I'm listing the above one as well - the articles should not exist until the stations actually begin broadcasting. Note that the above 96.9 station has now apparently gone 4 months without starting operations. NawlinWiki (talk) 05:03, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Sockpuppetry case
[edit]Your name has been mentioned in connection with a sockpuppetry case. Please refer to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Webfan29 for evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to cases before editing the evidence page. Marcus Qwertyus 18:56, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- I stopped the investigation because I didn't have proof that you were using the account as a sockpuppet and not just editing while logged out. In any case, do not remove any more AfDs. Marcus Qwertyus 19:43, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
New Le5 in Nipissing
[edit]Just so you know, the license is clearly referring to the Nipissing District rather than the township of Nipissing, Ontario. If you look at the application, the transmitter site is clearly just outside of Sturgeon Falls — and the township of Nipissing (which, confusingly, isn't even in the Nipissing District!) is neither large enough nor French enough to warrant its own radio station, whereas the municipality of West Nipissing certainly is. Bearcat (talk) 23:05, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]Just so you know, when you add categories to a new article, the pipetext after the category name isn't supposed to be a repetition of the category name, but rather it's supposed to be some version of the article's title, reflecting how the article is actually meant to be sorted in that category. That is, you don't want it to say , because that makes it list under the letter A in the category; instead, you want it to say in categories that are sorted on the second letter of the call sign and in categories that are sorted on the first. Hope that helps a bit. Bearcat (talk) 22:46, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of CION-FM 1980-1991 (defunct), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.broadcasting-history.ca/listings_and_histories/radio/histories.php?id=937&historyID=783.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. The article CIND-FM has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- This radio is extemely new and lacks of coverage. Sources are from trusted newspapers but I think it's a bit presumptuous to add this radio that fast. It's only 4 months old and besides sources annoucing its launch, the sources don't say much. No significant coverage.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing

Differences between Mainstream and Active Rock
[edit]I noticed that you may have some confusion when it comes to Mainstream Rock and Active Rock. Mainstream Rock, like that played on CKSE-FM, has groups like station plays Manfred Mann, BTO and The Doors, mixed in with new rock. Active Rock is solely new rock with some heavy metal and grunge from the 80s and 90s. Metallica, Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Halestorm, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Disturbed, Nirvana would be heard on Active Rock radio.
If you are ever in doubt, come find me and I'll let you know if it is Mainstream Rock or Active Rock....or any other format. :) - Neutralhomer • Talk • 23:47, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Lists of radio stations
[edit]Lists such as List of radio stations in Ontario are not meant only as lists of currently operating radio stations — any radio station that has a Wikipedia article to link to stays in the list regardless of whether it's still in operation or defunct. Bearcat (talk) 08:57, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Bearcat: It might be different for Canadian stations, but typically with "List of radio stations in [US State]" pages, we remove the defunct ones when they turn in their license. If the station is only Silent, it remains on the list. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 15:56, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of CJBT-FM
[edit]The article CJBT-FM has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- The station never went to air; it appears the authorization expired without the station ever being built. Unbuilt stations generally do not receive the presumption of notability that applies to stations that have actually operated.

Heads up
[edit]Just a heads up as to why you're getting a sudden burst of notifications about AFD or CFD nominations: over the years since you started contributing, Wikipedia's rules about the notability of radio stations have been tightened up considerably, with the result that certain types of content that were once acceptable aren't anymore:
- Stations that have been licensed, but not yet launched, now have to wait until they actually start broadcasting, and are no longer eligible for articles right away the moment their initial CRTC approval is announced.
- Stations which received licenses, but never actually launched and thus had their licenses expire unbuilt, also do not qualify for articles (and, in fact, this is the reason why newly licensed stations don't qualify for articles anymore until they've actually started broadcasting for real, as it's not nearly as rare for a radio license to expire unbuilt as one might think.)
- A station now has to originate at least some of its own programming locally to qualify for an article. A station which exists only as a rebroadcaster of a larger parent service, such as a Weatheradio Canada transmitter, does not get its own standalone article that can be referenced only to its own CRTC license, except maybe in the exceedingly rare circumstance that it can be separately (by virtue of media coverage about it) sourced as notable in its own right for something other than just existing as a Weatheradio transmitter. Stations of this type get redirects to their programming source, not standalone articles. (And yes, the weather radio transmitters in the United States are in the process of getting redirected back to NOAA Weather Radio as well — it's just a bigger job that is taking longer to complete, because there are far more articles to deal with. So the fact that some NOAA transmitters still have articles is not a reason for the Canadian ones to keep them anymore either, because they're all in the queue to get killed off too.) One added problem with the Weatheradio transmitters is that in 2007, the CRTC moved them to a class of radio station that's exempt from having to apply for or have a CRTC license at all — meaning that the existence or non-existence or defunctness or non-defunctness of a Weatheradio transmitter is now virtually unverifiable, because they can be opened or closed at will without CRTC intervention. (And that fact is why the rule about weatheradio stations having their own standalone articles changed.)
- Low-power VF# stations also don't qualify for articles anymore, unless they can be sourced to media coverage (the existence of a Canadian Communications Foundation history page doesn't cover this off all by itself) as being notable for more than just existing. In fact, just like the Weatheradio stations, VF stations generally no longer have to have a CRTC license at all, but now fall in a class of exempt broadcasting services comparable to the Part 15 rules in the US, so they no longer meet the "licensed broadcaster" criterion. They can be included in lists of radio stations, where appropriate and verifiable, but they don't get their own standalone articles anymore.
This isn't to suggest that you did anything wrong at the time, but our inclusion rules have changed over time because of advertorial abuse and unbuilt expired licenses and issues like that — and a lot of the old content that failed the new rules simply lingered without getting dealt with. But there's an active cleanup project under way to catch and resolve the articles that aren't keepable anymore, which is why you're getting all these notifications now. Thanks. The article VF2419 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- VF stations are not entitled to an automatic presumption of notability per WP:NMEDIA; most such stations now operate under a class of radio stations that are exempt from CRTC licensing, making even their basic existence unverifiable. As well, if we can't source anything about what the station broadcasts, then the reality is that it's most likely a simple rebroadcaster of a station from somewhere else.

Radio stations
[edit]Please note what I explained to you above: Wikipedia's rules about the notability of radio stations have had to be tightened up, due to a lot of problems with a lot of bad content over the years. New radio stations no longer get to have Wikipedia articles the moment their license approval is granted by the CRTC; you now must wait until the station has actually gone on the air before an article is allowed to be started. Weatheradio Canada transmitters do not each get their own standalone Wikipedia article anymore; they get redirects to the main article on Weatheradio Canada, as they are not independently notable as separate topics from the overall service. Low-power stations, such as VFs, do not get Wikipedia articles anymore, as they fall under a class of broadcasters that is now exempt from CRTC licensing. You need to understand that the rules have changed — you can't go around reverting redirects, or removing AFD templates, or continuing to start new articles about future radio stations that just got their construction permit two days ago, just because you don't like the new rules. [edit]Unfortunately there's no easy way to do it automatically — but it looks like it shouldn't be an overly time-consuming or difficult job to do manually, because the new URL just replaces the "histories.php?id=452&historyID=226" part with the actual call sign "CBO-FM" while remaining the same otherwise. So unfortunately it's a manual job, but at least it's not nearly as bad as it could have been. Bearcat (talk) 21:48, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, there's one other change hidden in the URL as well that I didn't notice at first: instead of listings_and_histories, it's now listing_and_histories. Bearcat (talk) 21:52, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm checking in with somebody right now to see if we can get a bot to do it. I'll keep you posted; I think the AM stations might be the harder part that we might still have to do alone, because it would have to be able to predict a few different possibilities for where to add -AM. But I'll let you know. Bearcat (talk) 22:06, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- They weren't able to entirely bot the process due to the complexities, but what they did do was create a template — so all we have to do is replace the existing link with in each article with callsign, where callsign is the location that the page is at on the CCF website, and display (which won't always be necessary at all) is how we want the link to display to the reader (e.g. if the page title has wonky stuff like "defunct" in it, or on the rare occasions where we actually used one station's CCF profile as a reference in the Wikipedia article about a related station. So that's not as great as being able to fully automate the entire process, but it does make the process of doing it manually a lot easier. Bearcat (talk) 02:07, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

The article CKGI-FM has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
The radio station never made it to air because it could not seek a tower site, resulting in the CRTC revoking the licence.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:CBC Television logo screenshot 1980s.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:CBC Television logo screenshot 1980s.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.
