Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Question Comment about Determined to Develop

Hi Edwardx - I wanted to ask about the UPE and other tags on the Determined to Develop article. I appreciate everything about Wikipedia and have just started doing my first edits. I am not paid and do not have a direct relationship with the nonprofit organization mentioned here, other than I have visited Malawi on two occasions and have seen first hand the good works they are doing. I do have direct knowledge of the issues facing youth in Malawi regarding the lack of education and specifically wanted to focus my initial Wikipedia contributions on a topic that I have a direct knowledge about. I have added a few new references and updated the entry to hopefully assist in removing any of the tags as I don't want my inexperience as someone editing on Wikipedia to reflect poorly for this organization. Thank you for your remarks. Levy Sekgapane (about whom I have written an article) is not related to me; he is not a friend, colleague, co-worker, employer, competitor.

I did not receive any payment for writing that page; all my Wikipedia activity is non-profit. I'm just interested in opera and I create pages about artists I'm interested in and I'm willing to correct all my mistakes (incorrect links, quotes, etc.) resulting from misunderstanding of the rules as soon as possible.

Would you mind deleting an "undisclosed paid" template you've put in that article (Levy Sekgapane)?

We discussed this on another one. Some of the sources are in full in references and others in citations. I suggest that you integrate the four books in citations into references by expanding the first mention of that source in references. Also, abbreviated refs should be in the form Gandhi, 2004, p. 417. not Gandhi 2004 p. 417 Some are surname first and others first name first. All should have a full stop at the end. Some have publisher then place and other the reverse. For instance "Pandit, Vijaya Lakshmi (1945) ’Prison Days. Calcutta: The Signet Press" should be "Pandit, Vijaya Lakshmi. (1945) Prison Days. Calcutta: The Signet Press." It's about following a consistent approach, whatever it is, and attention to detail so that your good work in the body is not undermined by the references. Help in linking!

Hi, I want your help in linking some words in Shamsheer Vayalil article, these are "physician" and "philanthropist" (in the first line of starting paragraph).   • Sir, the edits which you did in the article of Shamsheer Vayalil are really amazing. Now the article is perfectly in shape but:

1.) I noticed that from occupation column in infobox you removed "radiologist". At least that shouldn't be removed. If you look in other article like of Bill Gates (occupation column in infobox) you will find that all his occupations are mentioned. So, in Shamsheer Vayalil article (in infobox)also at least his former occupation should be mentioned because before becoming businessman he was a "Radiologist". 2.)From alma mater column in infobox you removed "Chennai" that should also be restored. 3.)The word "physician" in the starting paragraph should be linked. Overall your work is really really appreciable.

Thank you for your kind words. I have compromised and made the lead "an Indian billionaire businessman and former radiologist", and added "former radiologist" to the occupation field in the infobox. I think it improbable that he still does any work as an actual radiologist, hence the "former" and why it comes after "businessman", which is what he now is. Hope that is all okay with you! I want to put some light on a old news: Do you remember Eman Ahmed? She was heaviest woman on Earth(2017) who unfortunately died. She was being treated in 'VPS Healthcare' under guidance of Shamsheer Vayalil.He told a famous newspaper "The Times of India" that he "himself examined" Eman Ahmed reports. This proofs that he still work as a "radiologist". If you don't believe then you can go to archive version of " TOI" and cross examine his statement. This is the reason I requested you to lead the article as " Indian Radiologist and billionaire businessman. Sir, I am learner in front of you. You have given your 15 valuable years to wikipedia and have more experience than me. I don't want to challenge your valuable work but I have expressed what I think.So, I came to the final conclusion that he (Shamsheer Vayalil) is first a "Radiologist" then after "Businessman". We can't assume that if anyone has started a new work he might have left his old work. He might be doing his old work also and after all he's a doctor and doctors don't leave their work,for example look at Devi Shetty and Naresh Trehan they are also businessmen but still performing cardiac surgeries because both are cardiac surgeons.I hope this time I'm clear enough to explain you everything properly. That's all fine, and you argue your case well. I have tweaked the article further. I did not add Chennai to the infobox, as we really should try to only include the most important things there, and "Chennai" shows up on rollover, and is in the article. You never stop learning on Wikipedia, and even after all of this time, I believe my editing gets better with every passing year. I have done many articles on billionaires and they can be tricky to get the tone right, not just the facts. Edwardx (talk) 01:41, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Edit request 5 January 2019!

Sir, sorry to say that you by mistake removed "Parent(s) name" column as well as "awards" column (at least three notable awards name)from infobox. As per Template:Infobox person# Inline lists these columns should be present there (although parents name are present in the early life paragraph and separate awards and accolades paragraph is present in the article). I think that should be restored. In each and every wikipedia article you'll find these two columns.

Sir, when you cleaned up the infobox of Anil Ambani article you didn't remove the respective degrees (i.e. BSc. and MBA) from alma mater column although detailed information about his education is present in "Early life and education paragraph" but in Shamsheer Vayalil article you removed the respective degrees(i.e. MBBS and MD) from the alma mater column in infobox. I think that should also be restored. Please! give your opinion also.

Shiv Nadar , Benu Gopal Bangur , Ashwin Choksi , Rahul Bhatia , Ashwin Dani , Abhay Vakil and many more. These all are billionaires. So, what to do,should I remove their "parent(s) name column" from the infobox? I mean to say if there is a rule then it should be applicable to all articles on wikipedia. In Shamsheer Vayalil's article your opinion for adding Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in awards column (in infobox) is genuine. It's definitely a notable award (highest civilian award given to NRI's). When you'll see Shiv Nadar article you'll find that in award column (in infobox) Padma Bhushan is mentioned (which is also a highest civilian award given to notable people of India). Shiv Nadar has got more than 10 awards but in the award column (infobox) it's mentioned about Padma Bhushan only. Same with Amitabh Bacchan also. I hope I'm clear enough to explain my point.

Went to see a big exhibition on shoes at the V&A in 2015, and I recall she was mentioned. The V&A show led to Lionel Bussey, although Philafrenzy did most of the work. All it needs is a relative to put their DNA on the internet for genealogical purposes and at least her identity can be found. This is happening a lot in the U.S. It's interesting that they never give up on a murder. Ironically, as I expect you read, they may have had her name but the records were destroyed. Recent changes

  • You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [3]
  • Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [4]

Changes later this week

  • Advanced item Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [5]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 January. It will be on all wikis from 16 January (calendar).

Future changes

  • Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [6]
  • You can use <ref follow="…"> to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [7]

Akane Takada

As you know, I've recently been expanding the Akane Takada article. I'm thinking about nominating it for DYK as a 5x expansion. Possible hooks: "...that after a knee injury at age 12, ballet dancer Akane Takada had to wait for a year and a half to grow large enough for corrective surgery?" or "...that Akane Takada was promoted to principal dancer of the Royal Ballet at the unusually young age of 26?" Given your experience in DYK and arts-related articles, I thought I'd ask you for feedback, if you have the time to take a look. Great work, Indignant Flamingo. Having read through your expansion, I agree with you that those are the best two hook ideas. The first one could be trimmed a bit, "...that after a knee injury aged 12, ballerina Akane Takada had to wait 18 months to grow enough for corrective surgery?". The second one looks fine as is, and although 26 may be young for a principal dancer, it does not seem "unusually young" compared to the world in general.   • There is a new suggestion for what to show when someone edits without registering an account. This is to give unregistered editors better privacy and make some anti-vandalism work go faster. You can give feedback.
  • Advanced item Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will no longer support Python 2. Use the python2 tag if you need to continue running Python 2 scripts. The Pywikibot team strongly recommends to migrate to Python 3. You can get help to do so. [8]

  • Some mobile diffs have problems. A couple of buttons are not shown. Structured data diffs on Commons are confusing. The developers are working on fixing it. [10][11]
  • Administrators on wikis that use Structured Discussions can't move discussion pages. This is a bug. The developers are working on fixing it. [12]

  • There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

Future changes

  • There is JavaScript code on Special:Undelete for administrators that makes it possible to automatically select multiple checkboxes by holding the "Shift" key and clicking. This code is also loaded by accident on other special pages and on articles. This makes pages slower to load. This will be fixed. If you know of other special pages where this is useful please tell the developers at phab:T232688.
