Re: my last note to you

I have just seen your reply to my first note. This illustrates how new I am to Wikipedia pages. It had not occurred to me to scroll down from the top of your page, because it did not look anything like my user page, which is very simple - black on white - like a black-lead pencil on a piece of white photocopying / printing paper, which is how I like it because I am simple too, and like to see things in black and white.

I am very grateful for your reply. It is good to get critical, analytical feedback, and to know that I am working in the right direction. The reason that I was not erasing everything below my informatory lines that say words to the effect, 'from here on down, what you see is my drafting notes and garbage'. That was because I had set out by beginning to edit someone else's work and I wanted to keep it, somewhere, out of respect for its author, because it would never have occurred to me to put an article in Wikipedia about my life's profession, even though it looks as if I may be one of the last of my line - and unless someone makes the effort to write about them, then they will go the way of the dinosaurs - eternal oblivion and anonymity.

But, I take your point, and will copy and paste into a word document, the text below the point where I have managed to develop fair quality, so that I can copy and paste it back, if and when I need to.

Wikipedia article entitled County surveyor

As you have been so helpful, please forgive my forwardness, but, I suggest that now would be an appropriate time to change the title of the article to 'County Surveyor' to reflect what it is really about; and remove the opening information tag that says the article is overly USA-centric.

Oh, and I remember you saying something about removing other people's work. There's no worry about that; we keep a history of each and every revision of every article. JaGa - my apologies for disturbing you again, but please take a look at my Reference #6, about why I am able to give such a unique perspective, and answer me the following questions -

(1) is such a reference appropriate; or

(2) should I qualify the article by citing at the beginning of it, my full name, lawful sub-nominal abbreviated title, professional institution membership, my oath to God, Queen, and Country, and additionally that I was commissioned in 1970 by Her Majesty to thereafter promulgate all of my knowledge of the Royal Division to the best of my ability, as I would in presenting my proofs of evidence to a court, committee, or tribunal, appointed by the Crown? and

(3) if I do that, can we lock the page when I finish writing it, so that no-one can tinker with it without both your and my consent?

Hi Adrian. No worries about asking questions; I'm glad to help (although I will be going off to bed soon - it's 4:36 here - if you're in England, does that mean you've been working all night?) Regarding reference #6, I'm afraid that would not be an appropriate reference. A reference needs to be a published work that can be independently verified, like a book, newspaper, legal document, etc. that the public has access to. Also, Wikipedia does not permit the signing of articles (Even though your question is in the context of a legal document, the policy stands.) Finally, we're unable to lock pages completely or permanently; without doubt others will come along and make changes. This can be very discouraging to an editor, but since we do preserve the history of every page, your work will never be lost, even if others alter its current appearance. Wikipedia article entitled County surveyor

Thank you JaGa. I am grateful you have so much patience with me. I am a night-bird too. Sometimes I tap away at my laptop right through the night, and go to bed at around 8:00 - 9:00 in the morning, not, once or twice, but every day of the week, sometimes for as long as a month or more. I often don't eat or drink much when I am having such sessions, and don't therefore stop until I collapse with physical and mental fatigue. On a geometrically increasing number of times, sleep deprivation has caused me to have nervous breakdowns. So, be warned!

Having checked the time differential on the World Time Clock website, I believe that you hail from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Antigua/Bermuda, or Nova Scotia. In view of your interest in the County Surveyor article, my guess is that you are in an existing or former British territory, the most likely being the existing one rather than the former one. So, I'll take a chance and say, Hi, fellow Brit.

I'll go take reference #6 off the County Surveyor article as soon as I finish writing this note and saved it. I understand Wikipedia's policy stance, which aims for equanimity, thereby minimising bias as much as it can.

Just a reminder the Toolserver and Wikimedia sites now support HTTPS. 16mm

Hello JaGa,

I've been tidying up links to redirects but am stuck on one. According to Dab Solver you're my rival, so I thought I'd slow you down turn to you for advice. Someone has changed 16mm from a redirect to a dab, with his first ever edit, leaving lots of articles about film linking to a dab. I can see reasons for a dab page, although 16 mm (spaced, per MOS) is still a redirect. How do you think I should mend this?

Hi Certes! I moved the disambig to 16 mm (disambiguation), restored the redirect to point to 16 mm film, and added a {{redirect}} template to the film article to help people find the disambig. Having 16mm be a disambig and 16 mm point to an article would be ridiculous. I considered pointing 16 mm to the disambig, but really, What links here and the page view statistics (16 mm scale model trains, 327 page views in the last 30 days; 16 mm film, 10,444) made WP:PRIMARYTOPIC status clear. --JaGatalk 16:34, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation pages with links

Here's a suggestion that might be simple to implement and very useful to some of us. http://toolserver.org/~jason/disambig_links.php outputs two columns with links to the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo) and what links there (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere&target=Foo&namespace=0). Could it have a third link to http://toolserver.org/~jason/dab_fix_list.php?title=Foo for the Disambig fix list? I think most special characters can be treated the same way as in the first link; if it fails in a few awkward cases then I'm sure the target audience will understand.

I could probably achieve this for my own browser with something like GreaseMonkey, but it would be better if you could make it work for everyone.

Hello,

You may be interested in the discussion regarding deleting a list article regarding fictional Carpenters. You have in the past created a List of those surnamed Wood. I created this list at the suggestions of others citing Wiki rules. Now after following their advice a new group comes forward and deletes the list when I was oversea. I asked for it to be restored then imdiately starts the deletion process. I had the lists within the Carpenter surname article and would be happy to put them back together again. Put it seems if I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.

I am very frustrated. I would appreciate any input. See: List_of_fictional_characters_with_surname_Carpenter

The XSS Filter in Internet Explorer 8 and 9 when moving across domains (toolserver.org to wikipedia.org) mangles the edit box text like this. Unless the users hits "Show changes" again, they wouldn't know they were saving a mangled version. My current recommendation is for repeat users to disable this feature (described in the linked PDF) and everyone else to use the copy & paste workaround provided. Bug 32013 has been filed and with any luck this problem will be a thing of the past. — Dispenser 06:47, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I must say, I was surprised; It's odd not to see you in the HOF. Of course, it's getting tougher these days - the top 500 list is getting smaller and smaller, and the bonus list is getting bigger. I noticed that of the top four finishers, three of them got most of their points from the bonus list. (R'n'B was the outlier with a mere 545.) And J04n is back! That was good to see.

Links to disambig notifier

I started Metorex today. Checking "what links here" I saw your sandbox. I had typed Zamba when I meant Zambia. I try to avoid links to disambiguation pages, but obviously do not always succeed. I would be happy to get a notice telling me when I had goofed up. It is probably much easier for me (the author) to fix an error like this than for someone else. Better would be a tool, a tab at the top of the edit area, that would highlight any links to disambiguation pages. But a message would certainly be useful. A visual clue would be great, although a note would still be useful if the visual clue is not noticed. Maybe not color: 10% or so of males have impaired color perception. Possibly new editors should be treated more gently than more experienced editors, if this is not hard to do. Yeah, that's my worry too: how to make sure the message is not felt like an attack. I definitely don't want to be bitey, but I also don't want to go any more TLDR than I already have. To me there is something not quite right about: "Your help in fixing this disambiguation link would be appreciated". The presumption should be that the editor wants to fix any problem, so does not have to be advised by a bot to do so. Maybe change to something like "Any suggestions for improving this automated tool are welcome". I would not send the message to relatively new users (1,000 edits, maybe?). Also, perhaps have an hour or so delay to allow for corrections before sending the message, if that is not there already. But however you tweak it, someone is going to get pissed off. Good suggestions all. Another user had suggested the minimum edit count; I resisted that time, but now I'm thinking to resist a second time would be folly. Not to mention it would eliminate that newbie-biting worry of mine. I've put in the functionality, and will be playing around with different minimum edit count thresholds. Some delay is unavoidable thanks to the time spent in collating the data, so no worries there, but I may pad it a bit just to be sure. And I agree about the last sentence; I'm going to tweak it. It doesn't look like Tobias to me. Tobias is obsessed with making all the articles in a category have the same title structure; most of his work centers around that. I've never seen Tobias fix a single disambig link, only create them. Of course, since I keep busting him in his geography endeavors, I've no doubt he's doing some side project, but this just doesn't appear close enough to his MO for me to think it's him. --JaGatalk 17:23, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, this is definitely a sock of some sort. I don't see why we don't periodically sweep for various sockmasters like Tobias. I think that 182.182.114.195 (talk · contribs) is actually Mughal Lohar (talk · contribs) - both removed the same material, both editthe same articles, and Lohar has admitted to editing logged out in the past - I'm not sure how long to put up with this editor. I wrestled with it for a bit and then started an SPI here. There's no doubt in my mind it's Mughal Lohar; I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get him to edit responsibly. He would be a good contributor if he would just respect Wikipedia's policies. Hi Llywrch, to answer your questions:

  1. Two days - it's still in trial.
  2. Once daily (although I'll run it a second time today for the trial, but that won't be the practice going forward)
  3. It runs against all articles
  4. Some will argue about how serious the problem is, but I'm definitely not doing this just for fun. Currently, there are over 650,000 links to disambiguation pages. In many cases (like an accidental link to British), the dablink is annoying but not much more - although the argument can be made that anything that degrades the user experience - like expecting a link to go to an article about British people but instead getting a disambig - is definitely a problem. But more importantly, many times it isn't obvious which article the author intended, which is indeed serious, because then a reader hits a dead end in their navigation. If we can get the author to let us know what they meant while they're still around, the article benefits hugely.

I think this is a useful bot, but would add that hatnote links should be ignored if the page linked to is in Category:Disambiguation pages (or contains the {{disambiguation}} tag), rather than simply based on the title. This is the case with Fourth dimension, which is redirected to from Fourth dimension (disambiguation). I was recently alerted in connection with this page. What do you think? Nope, the "foo (disambiguation)" redirect is correct, as it 1) removes the page from the list of those requiring repair and 2) clearly alerts readers that they are being taken to a disambig page. If you really want the "(disambiguation)" to not show up in the hatnote, use the code {{otheruses|Fourth dimension (disambiguation){{!!}}Fourth dimension}} and you will achieve that appearance without introducing the appearance of an error. I fixed 4th Dimension (software) per WP:INTDABLINK. It's confusing to intentionally employ a redirect instead of a direct link, but that is the proper syntax. --JaGatalk 15:37, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Right. Trevj, you are missing something, but I wouldn't say it's obvious. :) WP:INTDABLINK says that if you mean to link to a disambiguation page (for example, in a hatnote), you should always link to a title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that's a redirect. So even though you were correct to link to the disambiguation page, you technically should have linked to the redirect, not to the actual page title.
JaGa, on further thought, it probably is not a good idea for the bot to notify editors in the situation described here; even though the link does need to be fixed, it is not a link to the wrong page, and a lot of editors will be confused or mislead by the bot's message. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:20, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I've been thinking about it, and I think I'll create a sixth "type" to track hatnotes and See also dabs (assuming I can come up with a reliable way to identify See also dabs). Here's another thing: a user mentioned disambiguation pages themselves. A dablink in a disambiguation page is almost always also going to be a INTDABLINK, so I think I'll exclude disambiguation pages altogether as well, and also group them as "Type 6". Hello. Recently a bot run by you, DPL_bot, posted a notification on my talk page about me resetting the wikilink for Africanist on the article about Robert Sobukwe to a disambiguation page. I thought that it is worthwhile getting back to you on this because of the peculiar situation with regards to what is meant by "Africanist" in the context of Sobukwe. Currently the only article for "Africanist" refers to a specialist in African studies. This is not the definition of "Africanist" that Sobukwe is refereed to so a link connecting him to African studies in this particular political context is not correct. Even though he did teach the subject at one stage. The unfortunately the type of "Africanist" that he should be connected to in a political context does not yet exist. FYI: I have requested experts to clean up the mess of the index pages. I guess that an expert from a related Wikiproject has more knowledge about the index-page, hence (s)he could fix and evaluate the contents and disambig-links far quicker then we can (at least: quicker then I can). Well, it's certainly worth a shot, but I'll be happily surprised if much comes of it. One of the problems with indices and lists is that people rarely feel any ownership of them, so if that index or list needs maintenance no one feels it's their problem. Challenge leaderboard

Due to some random Toolserver error or outage, the update script was hung indefinitely, blocking all future attempts to run the script. I just had to clear out the failed run manually, but since I've been traveling etc I wasn't around to do it - and probably wouldn't have noticed the problem just now if not for your note. Hi,

Your bot left me a message about The Telegraph, the link to which I had included in my edit of Yesterday (song). The link actually was intended, sort of, but I must confess I didn’t check where it leads to. Which is the disambiguation page.

The source for a bit of what I wrote and quoted is something called The Telegraph, but apparently there is no article on it, and I could not really find out what it is. Apparently something not available in print media? So I don’t know how to improve the link.

I understand that the message came to me from an “automated service”. If it comes to all authors after creating a link that goes to a disambiguation page, I think it sounds like a very welcome thing, alerting writers/contributors that they should be a bit more careful with these links.

Error in notification

Hello, the bot notified me of the disambiguation links at criminology in error. I made absolutely no change to the content of the page; all I did was a bit of history splitting, which probably confused the bot. I like the concept of the bot, though! Yeah, I really have no way of detecting the difference between a history merge and normal editing. DPL bot took this edit as an "addition" of dablinks. If you do a lot of history merges, you might want to opt out of the messages altogether. Cheers, --JaGatalk 16:12, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps the bot can check the dates of the two edits, and if one edit has a date before January 2002, ignore the diff? That should take care of all but the most esoteric cases. The bot only reacted to the above edit because of its high revision ID number, due to the fact that I'd just imported it into the database from the Nostalgia Wikipedia. Normal history merges and history splits shouldn't cause any problems. I do a lot of history merging, but I've probably imported most of the necessary edits from the Nostalgia Wikipedia by now, so I shouldn't get the message too often ... and I don't mind fixing the disambiguation links! abut a pseudolink I had set up at Tomás Romero. First of all, I would like to continue receiving such notifications (there was a way to NOT get them, I think), because I need to know about these. Ejection Fraction

I am decidedly out on a limb here and have never directly addressed a bot. As near I understand your query; I would argue that my insertion of the term Work in the article Ejection Fraction was definitely intentional. I think that you would agree that driving blood out of the heart 60-80 times per minute for 70-80 years entails a lot of work. Cardiac mathematics is presently being pursued with supercomputers in many great institutions worldwide. Hi, and thanks for the note. The problem is, work points to a "Did you mean..." list of articles. The bot is asking you to make the link go to an article instead. For instance, ejection fraction also had a link to the disambiguation page ventriculography. But it shouldn't have linked there, so I changed it to point to Cardiac ventriculography. Similarly, for work I chose to point the link to Cardiac output using the following piped syntax:
forward performance [[Cardiac output|work]] of both the right and left ventricles

DPL bot and broken redirect

Hi and thanks for keeping DPLbot running. If more people heeded its output then Wikipedia would be a better place, but I've come across one oddity. I received a notification after I created a redirect Old revision of Bluefin tuna (disambiguation) → Bluefin tuna. It's probably because a later edit by another user added a template to Bluefin tuna (disambiguation), turning my #Redirect[[Bluefin tuna]] from a redirect into a rather untidy numbered list entry with a link to dab. Presumably DPLbot spotted that the current version contains a link which isn't an effective redirect, and that the text [[Bluefin tuna]] first appeared in my edit. I'm not sure whether it's possible and worthwhile to handle this sort of case specially. Perhaps it's just a symptom of the fact that redirects and templates don't mix at a more fundamental level. DPL bot

I really appreciate your efforts with this bot, but it warned me for adding dablinks when I had only reverted vandalism on the article. Could you please improve the detection algorithm so that these false positives do not occur? Logan Talk Contributions 15:21, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Logan. I already filter out most vandalism-reversion, but it's impossible for me to catch all of it. I see you're a Huggle user. You may want to opt out of the messages, as they certainly aren't intended to go after vandal fighters. --JaGatalk 16:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Actually, the auto-generated comment on your edit inspired me; with some work I've made it possible to analyze the user's comment when they create the dablink. Now, if that comment contains "revert", "vandal", "undid revision", or "rvv" (all case insensitive), it ignores the edit and sends no message.
