Not tunnels again

I am well aware (as per previous post) that tunnels and bridges are distinct, but I wanted to ask a question at "Wikiproject tunnels", except that there doesn't seem to be one. I wonder if it would be a good idea for a combined bridges and tunnels project? Anyway, I will ask the question here...

The opening of the new Gotthard tunnel led to a spate of edits involving the Seikan tunnel. I would like to ask people who are know essentially nothing about Japanese how easy it is to understand the origin of the name from the sentence in the lead beginning "The name Seikan comes from...", following the obvious links as necessary. I would like to try to make this clearer, but if everyone says it's clear already, I won't bother. Impressions please. Imaginatorium (talk) 07:55, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Category inclusion in Category:Truss bridges?

I've always seen Category:Truss bridges (in the absence of a Category:Truss bridges by type sub-category) as having an important (but not its only) role as a parent for the "trusses by type" categories: Category:Pratt truss bridges‎, etc.

An editor is now 3RR warring to remove Category:Allan truss bridges from this cat, on the grounds that the three examples listed on WP (WP is not WP:RS) are all in Australia, thus the category should only be a member of Category:Truss bridges in Australia. This breaks the use of categories for navigation by type of truss.

If there's a reasonable and strong geographical scope to these (which would be to ignore the wartime Allan trusses in Burma), then they could belong in the geographical at in addition. But we need to preserve "by type" navigation as a technical description of the bridges and should not remove it, as is being done.

Disambiguation

Are bridges disambiguated by city name or river name? I see Monroe Street Bridge (Chicago) was moved to Monroe Street Bridge (Chicago River), but I assumed bridges were disambiguated by city. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:16, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't think there is a standard, but if I was creating a disambiguation for bridges named the same, I would use location (country, state, county, city, etc.). The reason is that a river name might require a second disambiguation. For instance, there are eight rivers named Little River just within South Carolina (see here). So you're potentially having to add the location anyways. Such as Big Bridge (Little River, Horry County, South Carolina). - ¢Spender1983 (talk) 22:11, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

The article New I-94 and Highway 10 Interregional Connection Bridge has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The proposed project has been delayed basically indefinitely as the project really hasn't secured any funding and hasn't really gained traction in the last few years.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge?

Plaque for the bridge

I took a picture of this plaque in Chicago in 2015. Does anyone know if there is a Wikipedia article about this bridge, or if there should be one? ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:12, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Take a look at Category:Bridges in Chicago. It's not the Wells Street Bridge is it? That's about the best known. Otherwise Franklin Street Bridge or Madison Street Bridge.
The "Strauss trunnion" is a form of bascule bridge, not a specific bridge. Joseph Strauss developed it, as an improvement on previous bascule bridges. A number were built around Chicago. To avoid a licensing fee, the Chicago city engineers then produced their own improvement upon this and claimed that it was no longer a "Strauss" design, thus didn't have to pay the licence fee. AIUI, there was a fairly notable court case over this.
So we ought to expand the content at bascule bridge, describe the Strauss design and the incidents in Chicago. That's the technical aspect. There's also a possibility that this (unidentified) bridge might justify an article because of its own individual history. That's a separate issue: is the bridge or its route noteworthy? Quick note in the interests of promoting further discussion, a suggestion has been made at Template talk:Infobox bridge#Carries field that one of the field in the bridge infox be altered. All opinions welcome. Avgas7 (talk) 04:14, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

Is there an English name for this type of construction? I feel sure that it can't be restricted just to the Netherlands and France.

A famous example - Langlois Bridge, painted by Van Gogh. Narky Blert (talk) 20:11, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

A modern example. Narky Blert (talk) 20:19, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Here's another - Magere Brug. English Wiki calls it a bascule bridge, but it very obviously isn't. The double beam and counterweight are characteristic. Unsurprisingly, Dutch Wiki calls it an ophaalbrug, which is not the same as nl:basculebrug. Narky Blert (talk) 20:34, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge name

Someone suggested that I should post a note here drawing interested parties’ attention to edits at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge page. This name should take a hyphen (-), not an en dash (–). In the context of bridge names, en dashes take the place of the word “to”: the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel is the Brooklyn-to-Battery Tunnel. But the Verrazano is not a bridge connecting the Verrazano & the Narrows. Rather, it’s 2 alternative names for the same thing (the Verrazano Bridge and the Narrows Bridge) smushed together. This is exactly analogous to when Ms. Doe & Mr. Roe marry to become Mr. and Ms. Doe-Roe: they use a hyphen. In other words, the rule is not “bridges and tunnels use an en dash instead of a hyphen in their names”; you have to look deeper.

I’m a professional copyeditor with many years’ experience editing to both American and British standards. That makes me a bona fide en-dash weenie—probably the weeniest en-dash weenie of them all—but to use one in Verrazano–Narrows makes no sense. It is a contrived construction that flies in the face of convention. You can tie yourself up in pretzels arguing that it's not a bridge over the Verrazano Narrows (the Narrows themselves not being named for Verrazzano), but the terms "Verrazano" and "Narrows" are still not coordinate ones. Really, though, what's wrong with it is that it snags the eye.

I had made this point on the VNB Talk page and, not hearing any objections after a week, posted it at Moves Requested. The move to Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has been made, and I’m now in the process of going thru What Links Here and tidying up. But I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of the reasoning behind the change so that nobody decides it must be a mistake and starts to undo it without discussion.

I’m also posting this at the NYC project. Let’s direct discussion to the VNB talk page to keep it all in one place, if that is agreeable. Gould363 (talk) 17:25, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Just wanted to inform you that the new List of crossings of the Rahway River page doesn't look like it is up to the usual standards of other "crossings" pages I have seen. I am only tangentially connected to this project, as I'm a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads, so I don't know what the actual standards for this type of page is. I just know that, compared to other similar pages, this one doesn't look as good. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 00:13, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

You are right, normally there are more columns. See List of crossings of the Schuylkill River with more columns, but other rivers have only a few columns. The Talk:Tunnel article talk page and a few others, such as the Talk:Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, have the {{WikiProject Bridges|class= |importance= }} tag, but most do not.

Some editors want that tag, and others do not. There are three alternatives:

1. The Bridges tag on all tunnels.

2. No tag for the structure of tunnels.

3. A new WikiProject Tunnels tag for tunnels.

This Talk:Bridges page is a relevant page to start a discussion. Please answer with:

  • None - and why
  • Tunnels and why

The bridges infobox doesn't appear to have a section for "demolished". This little bridge was so destroyed in the 1960s and "Closed" doesn't seem quite right. Any suggestions? KJP1 (talk) 11:15, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Seems like we need a section for demolished then. It would be relevant to a lot of bridges. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:26, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm sure you're right. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of demolished bridges. Templates aren't my forte but I think they might be yours. Do you know how to make an additional field? KJP1 (talk) 11:59, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm an expert on templates (day job). However I'm not allowed to here, you'll have to ask an admin. You might ask Frietjes or Zackmann08 who've done most of the recent work on it. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:00, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
KJP1 and Andy Dingley, there is |destroyed= and |collapsed=. we could probably make |demolished= work as an alternative to |destroyed= for planned/sanctioned destruction. for now, I have changed "closed" to "destroyed". Frietjes (talk) 14:05, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
  • I would tend to see "destroyed" as meaning "bombed" or similar, owing to hostile action. It's worth distinguishing demolition owing to falling from use or poor condition from that. I'd include destruction by a retreating army as "destroyed" too.
There's also the question of bridges that collapsed and were then demolished some years later (and both would be relevant). It's fairly common that one span of a bridge is somehow destroyed, but the rest of the bridge isn't "tidied away" for some years afterwards. Severn Railway Bridge would be one, as would almost anything across the Rhine in 1945. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:10, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Andy Dingley, you can use both |destroyed= and |collapsed= in the same box. my suggestion was to allow for |demolished= as an alternative to |destroyed=, which would still allow for the use of |collapsed= in the same box. Frietjes (talk) 14:39, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
I would like to see all three, and the ability to use them in combination. A bridge which either collapses or is destroyed could well be demolished years later. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:40, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Frietjes - I tend to agree with Andy that 'destroyed' has hostile connotations that 'demolished' doesn't. If all three can't be done, demolished as an alternative to destroyed would be great. Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 15:31, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

It has been a pretty significant news story that the tolls on the Severn bridges have finally been withdrawn. As a result, the cats have been removed from Severn Bridge etc. But should we do this? These are bridges which have long (50+ years) been toll-paying and form a key part of the history and politics of "toll bridges in the UK" (and so are interesting to general searches and navigation for such). Although I agree that they are no longer, should they remain in the categories anyway? Or do we need categorization for "former toll bridges"?

@Wire723:? Andy Dingley (talk) 15:31, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Good question. I vote for a "former" subcategory, which would also come under Category:Former toll bridges. --Wire723 (talk) 16:03, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
That's probably enough - do we really need to go down to the same geographical level? Andy Dingley (talk) 16:50, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

The first railway suspension bridge, Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, requests a Peer Review and Assessment

Hi, I would like to invite the project to review the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge after my 13-fold expansion. I would also like the project to assess this bridge's importance to the project and if it qualifies as A-class before I bring it to FAC. I feel the bridge is an important bridge both locally and internationally; it was:

  • the first successful railway suspension bridge, disproving the general opinion then that suspension bridges could not handle trains,
  • the first bridge that started John A. Roebling's distinctive style,
  • part of the Underground Railroad,
  • made a symbol of inspiration for the United States in its rebuilding after the civil war.

Please take a look and leave your comments at Wikipedia:Peer review/Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge/archive1. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jappalang (talkcontribs) 01:01, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Brig o' Doon: what are "cranked" cobblestones?

In the entry for the bridge in Scotland Brig o' Doon, the cobblestones on the bridge are described thus: "The line of the cobbles in the roadway is cranked, due to the belief that this pattern would stop witches from crossing."

I have no idea what it means for cobbles to be cranked. Searching the Internet, I only find repetition of this same comment. I am posting this here in the hopes that some bridge aficionado knows about cranked cobbles and can update the entry. AristosM (talk) 17:31, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

I have no specific knowledge of cobbling technology (or anything else relevant), but I think that in ordinary language, "cranked" is just another way of saying "crooked", and it may well be more common in Scottish English. (I am reminded of the Lockerbie 747 terrorist attack, in which it emerged that film from the BBC news had to be subtitled for American viewers.) Imaginatorium (talk) 05:41, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
I might accept that except for the word "pattern", which leads me to believe this might be a particular arrangement that deliberately creates a lack of lines or something like that (that's pure speculation from me). Regardless, I would like someone who does know to expand the sentence. AristosM (talk) 05:30, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Farnsworth Avenue Bridge

I just created an article for the Farnsworth Avenue Bridge in New Jersey. There are claims that it was built in 1831, making it possibly the oldest bridge over a railroad in the Western Hemisphere. Thriley (talk) 06:30, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Gooday. I am interested to learn of what deck wearing surface is used. On Google Streetview, I cannot see any expansion joints (across). The article is devoid of any details relating to the deck construction, which is stated off-Wiki to be of the Orthotropic deck type.

I would imagine there may be sliding and/or stepped overlaps for the steel sections, and there should be reciprocal flexiblity on the wearing surface? Likewise expansion joints for the earthquake-resistance factor? Could it be that rubber-crumb is included into the aggregate to achieve a non-cracking surface? With overhead Mediterranean sun on the black surface and the cooling water, there would be a large thermal range. Or is it that the steel acts as a giant heat-sink and cools the surface acceptably into the water? I don't want to struggle trying to hypothesise and explore blind alleys on this, so if anyone could clarify I would be grateful.

I'm not planning any changes to the main article, it's the Osman Gazi Bridge#In popular culture aspect that I'm researching. Thank you.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 23:19, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Dead wikilinks in lists

I'm a long-time editor, just became active again over the last couple months after a decade of dormancy, so I'm sure things have changed in my absence. That said, a list I rebuilt from practically the ground up, List of bridges in Florida, today had an editor come in and add dead wikilinks to bridges that probably will never be notable enough for their own pages. I always assume good faith, and I'm under no delusions that I own anything, but I'm more curious as to whether dead links are now encouraged to prompt others to create pages for them, or if I would be correct in reverting the changes to remove links to bridges that probably won't qualify for the notoriety criteria to have them? EaglesPhilliesFanInTampa 16:23, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Never mind. I'm going to revert, because it appears it's a n00b who was 48-hour muted for doing similar to other pages. I'd still like clarification for the future what y'all think, though. :-) EaglesPhilliesFanInTampa 11:41, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. The only thing that could be improved is the introduction by making it a little denser. NotWeace" Martin of Sheffield (talk) 08:31, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
