Thanks, I was going to use the "move" button but it looked like it was going to create a double redirect (someone had already previously moved "FH" from "FH (TV series)" and I couldn't figure out how to prevent that. Maybe I just should have tried and it would have come out all right. :-) Thanks again, that preserves the post history and such. == Misnamed category ==

Hi Keane, I was wondering if you could rename a category that is misnamed. :Category:Musical radio programs should actually be called :Category:Music radio programs, without the -al — both for grammar, syntax, meaning, and to match its subcategories. Would you be willing to fix that? I'm not sure I have the skill level yet to do it correctly and thoroughly. If you are able, then thanks very much in advance. Hover text

You, Commander McLean! Do you know of any template which functions like Template:H:title but without that annoying bottom border/underlining? I'm thinking of providing hovering IPA pronunciation for most example text (if the IPA is very important I'll included it after the text). Do you have any idea if such a mythical beast actually exists? <span title = "Lipsum" > This is too KEWL!! </span> is too much work and is ugly to type. Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 00:46, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Commander Keane, long time no speak! Thanks for the feature request, that particular feature has been requested before, and I'm thinking of implementing it. Advertising

The article Toledo_do_Brasil_Balanças is an obvious advert for Metler Toledo Scales. Most of the content was originally in Portuguese ! It really should be deleted. Woodsstock 12:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found it a bit hard to make the deletion decision, because I can't tell the notability of the company (speaking Portuguese would be a big advantage). Perhaps it should be redirected to Mettler Toledo. Possibly a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion will resolve the issue.--Commander Keane 23:37, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I was using this as an example to show how open the Wikipedia is about edits, and creation pages. It was a tool I used to teach people about Wikipedia. Thanks for giving an example of how free form it is. Guess I'll have to find some other way to teach students to use the internet for researching and cataloging information.

Natalie

The page Natalie currently redirects to Natalie (singer). Yet I seem to remember a dab page was previously at this address. I've checked Natalie (name), Natalie {given name), and [[Natalie (disambiguation), yet there is nothing there. Also, many pages that do not refer to the singer link to Natalie. Would you be willing to look at the deleted versions of the page and see if there was a dab page that, perhaps, was accidently deleted? Thanks. Natalie 00:55, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help Resolving a conflict

I have read the pages about this on wikipedia and I have came to you because you seem to be a person who knows how wikipedia is supposed to work and are most likely 100% neutral on this matter. I am involved in a rather intense edit war with two other editors of the article Miriam Rivera. In the last days the user User:Jokestress has quite reasonably asked for the article to be backed up with more reliable sources. Well I found them and that seems to have placated her. She has acted in 100% reasonable way in all of this. The problem arises in that she has asked in the spirt of resolving the conflict we were having other people who are not 100% neutral it seems to comment on the matter. These being the user User:Longhair and the userUser:Alison in particular who have not bothered to justify anything that they have done. Longhiar being an admin seems to feel no need to discuss anything and I feel is abusing her powers. Is there anything you can do? --Hfarmer 03:21, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why helpme has been used on a page that is not your own user talk page and I hope Shoessss doesn't mind me responding here. Hi. I was just wondering why you removed the speedy delete tag from this article with the comment "not suitable for speedy deletion." I believe the text in the article did not provide context, under the criterion of A1. It was just a definition that didn't really indicate where the term would be used (law, sociology, etc.). A quick Google search did not provide much help, either. ... discospinster talk 12:08, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moving images to Commons

Thanks for the message. I remembered why I was renaming them. I was thinking that if I call them the same name, then the original upload on Wikipedia would never become an orphan, and would never be deleted. Would this happen, or does a Commons take precedence? Would an admin know there was a replacement on Common? MortimerCat 17:03, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the author's talk page you had stated that you had deleted the page, however it still exists at this time. I have tagged it with Template:nn-bio.

Speedy delete for Commons images?

Hey Commander, you helped me a long time ago and I'm looking for some additional assistance if you are willing to provide it. There are two images in the commons that are the same image, but have different titles--one is correct, the other is absolutely wrong. A bot seems to think the aritlce that had the correct title should actually have the wrong titled image instead and I fear the correct one will eventually get deleted because it is a duplicate image that the bot/someone thinks is unnecessary. How do I have the incorrectly named image deleted so there is no chance of that happening? Incidentally, I have no idea why the guy uploaded the same dang image with the wrong title since supposedly he is in the military himself, but whatever. The correct image is Image:Achievement.jpg and the incorrect image is Image:Joint Meritorious Unit Award.jpg (the correctly named image of the Joint Meritorious Unit Award has its own image already: Image:JoMerUnitRib.gif; the one listed above is absolutely superfluous in every way). Thanks! --ScreaminEagle 20:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Hello Commander!

I was wondering:

I recently created a "template" to be placed at the top of my talk page (click here) but for some reason it does not reflect the encoding that I copied from Tangotango's header (on which mine has been created - by copying) Tangotango's template can be found here

Do you have any ideas why this en't working?

Booksworm Talk to me! 15:45, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well the only thing I can see is that on your talk page you have rather than .--Commander Keane 00:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean - I meant this in comparison to this. I did not place it on my talk page as it not covering the entire width of the page as Tangotango's does
Booksworm Talk to me! Sapere Aude! 05:41, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Tangotango's (and yours) both have a floating width - the width depends on the longest line of text. I have edited your header to add a fixed width, revert it if you don't like it.--Commander Keane 05:46, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images deleted (copied from here)

I have deleted Image:PPSJIIIboxback.JPG and Image:PPSJIIIboxfront.JPG. They were reuploaded to Commons but deleted there with the reason "Derivative work, see Commons:Derivative works" - they are not free images.--Commander Keane 06:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While I appreciate your efforts, English Wikipedia allows both free content images and non-free content images. If an inappropriate image copyright tag is used, it is proper to tag the image page for deletion and then leave a note on the contributor's talk page to give the contributor a chance to fix the problem. Immediately deleting an image on Wikipedia because Commons does not permit non-free content is not supported by Wikipedia process and is aggressive towards the contributor. Please consider restoring the images so that proper Wikipedia process may be followed. -- Jreferee 16:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK no worries I have restored the images, hopefully you will tag them.--Commander Keane 01:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Commander. I spent some time going through the flow chart at Commons:Derivative works and was surprised to learn that the photos were not free images. I'll work on tagging them. Thanks again for restoring them. This should help me provide a proper tag. -- Jreferee 17:20, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects exactly like this are deleted regularly. I do not believe WP:D says anything about keeping such redirects. What maintenance purpose could it possibly have? shoeofdeath 09:35, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't really understand the quote from WP:D that you pasted nor the reason why such a redirect should stay. I don't really care, though, and it is certainly not doing any harm so I will just leave it at that. Use of Debatable Headings

It is a debatable topic as how Indian Government Lawfully classifies the socially molested sections of the society with the following headings

OBC Other Backward Caste
SCST Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe

"Other Backward Caste", Does this heading not authorize a section of Indian Society lawfully termed as BACKWARD, How does the Government want to eradicate caste system, by lawfully classifying sections of Indian Society as Backward? Should they not have headings

Socially Molested Sections 1a
Socially Molested Sections 1b
Socially Molested Sections 1c

I really do not understand the wiki policies. What I wanted to state is the title used to represent socially molested sections of the society is as follows OBC (Other Backward Caste) is very controversial. It is like a couple of guys raped a women, and the end the justice, the judge declared the following.

People who raped the women = Higher Class People, so no advantage to you. Since you are a majority in the Indian Parliament, no punishment to you.

The women who got raped = Lawfully termed "Raped Women" (instead titling is as "The Women who was raped by BAD men"). So, now after labeling lawfully "Raped" she has to live with that and the next generations to come will be called children's and linage of "raped" women.

Sorry Keane, I am a very weak writer and really don't know how to represent things. It will take a long time for me to get this article out there as the number of people from the educated higher class are more. The Gov of India has already made a blunder and further generations will be actually called generations of the lawfully "BACKWARDS". I hope you understand what I wrote. If you need further clarifications I will wait and explain.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on New Vision (company), by Argyriou, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because New Vision (company) fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

CSD A7 No assertion nor evidence of notability.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting New Vision (company), please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Why delete Dysexecutive syndrome

Hi I'm new to Wikipedia and so am a little confused as to why the Dysexecutive syndrome article has been deleted. It is nice to hear from your Dumarest :-) Mmm, good question. Actually recently I have not been very active in Wikipedia, and I have heard others comment that after some time with Wikipedia their interest wanes and they move on. With the vandalism, it does tend to be fixed quickly, and fortunately for me the articles I tend to edit are not frequented very often so I don't get bothered by vandalism so much. Also, there is a new tool that will be introduced some time in the future, Sighted versions, that will hopefully minimise the impact of vandalism. I am regularly frustrated and discouraged with Wikipedia, but I try to focus on free content creation and ignore the other yucky mess around here. The example I use to remind myself of the good work here is the article Seikan Tunnel that I worked on. I added info from non-free sources (only available by subscription, luckily my uni provided me with access at the time) and expanded the article. Then someone translated the article into Finnish. So now a kid (maybe a future tunnel engineer :) in Finland had access to information previously unavailable. Maybe you have a story like this you can share with me? I am always looking for more inspiration :) --Commander Keane 10:42, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing as good as yours. I am responsible for increasing the reach of an Edgecomb author just across town, Lea Wait, but most of what I have done is not that remarkable. The new idea of sort of authorized pages says that only about 6% of edits are vandalization, but I guess I have some bad one on my watch list - on any given day about half the hits new to the list are revisions of vandalism. --Dumarest 14:28, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Indef block of User:Bugman94

Can you comment here on history of this user's indef block? He seems to have come back as an otherwise productive editor for many months as User:SLSB, until somehow (and this is unclear at this point too) someone figured him out. So he created another account and showed up at WP:AN to, as it were, throw himself on the mercy of the community, at which point he was quickly re-banned for being honest. He seems to have been a 12 y.o. when blocked, which means he's in H.S. by now. I advised him to just sneak back in and not out himself this time, and that might work out. Others are telling him he needed to go to ArbCom, but there's no evidence (i.e. links from his original user page) that, despite the tag, Arbcom had anything to do with his indef block. -- Kendrick7talk 05:27, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you parse the most recent database dump for Wikipedia:Templates with red links (that is, generate a list of templates containing red links and sort that list into four or five supbages by number of redlinks)? Hi, I noticed you disambiguated the William Ogilvie articles a while back. Since William Ogilvie (surveyor) is a more distinguished historical figure, I would like to see his bio appear first (I don't know what the wiki-phrase is for this). William Ogilvie FRGS was one of the last of the North American explorers, and a prominant historical figure. Please let me know what you think of this idea.--Zen-in (talk) 05:50, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a formal process (Requested moves), but in simple cases like this you can be bold or just mention something on the talk page. Since the surveyor is important the situation does need to change, there are two options:
 1. Move William Ogilvie to William Ogilvie (scholar), and then move William Ogilvie (surveyor) to William Ogilvie, with a note placed at the top pointing to the scholar's article.
 2. Move William Ogilvie to William Ogilvie (scholar) and at then at William Ogilvie create a disambiguation page pointing to the two articles
If you need some help with the process just let me know :-) --Commander Keane (talk) 07:08, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Year page formatting of multiple events

Hello, I'm sending you this message since you were involved in the August 2005 survey on year pages. AfD nomination of James McDermott

An editor has nominated James McDermott, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James McDermott and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 08:59, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:FFVI characters on airship.png

Thanks for uploading Image:FFVI characters on airship.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:21, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Channel Tunnel horizontal positioning

I came across the excellent Image:Channel Tunnel geological profile 1.svg diagram. Do the sources you have to hand have any equivalent source material to trace out the line of the tunnel as seen from above (which also IIRC isn't straight). Many Thanks, —Sladen (talk) 10:15, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Course Channeltunnel en.svg is in the article and shows the tunnel's line ok. I have two diagrams at hand, one showing the boreholes done and the line of the tunnel (unfortunately it cuts off the UK portal), the other diagram shows the line of the tunnel, the cross over caverns and terminal locations (a bit like Template:Channel Tunnel). Both are from Kirkland's Engineering the Channel Tunnel (p. 23 and p. 13 respectively), I can scan the images and email them to you if you need them, or you may be able to use google books to see the pages. I could have a go at making an image if something is needed.--Commander Keane (talk) 10:52, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Channel Tunnel

Hi. I am sorry Channel Tunnel did not pass FAC, but don't feel discouraged. I think FA is not far off; the article got a lot of comments (on-the-fence votes) with good suggestions, and few opposes. As far as I can see, the killer issue was the organization of the article. Reorganizing can be painful but does not take all that much time. You might ask for help with it too; some editors specialize in reorganizing and it is a job that can be done by someone not close to the topic. --Una Smith (talk) 02:48, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possible undeletion

I have some concerns about the fact that a dozen and a half revisions by about 8 editors of New School were article stubs before being overwritten, without edit summary, by an Rdr, then by more typical retargeting Rdrs, a Dab, a manual Rdr as part of a cut-and-paste move of the Dab, and yet another more typical retargeting Rdr, and then finally was deleted (presumably implicitly pursuant to at least WP:CSD#G6, but without any acknowledgment of the article-stub-revisions). At the most practical level, i think (without being able to cite a policy) that the original shift from article to Rdr, esp'ly without summary, sets a bad example that invites vandalism and potentially confusion. Would you have any objection to the following disposition, in which i would do all the work?:

 1. Del New School (a Rdr, all of whose incoming links from main-namespace pages i have already bypassed anyway)
 2. Undel the article-stub revisions of New School, for the sake of opportunity for visible and wider consideration of their deletability
 3. Rename this undeleted New School to New School (Dawson)
 4. Either undelete the remaining (Dab & Rdr) revisions (my inclination), or simply retarget the move-tool Rdr (targetted at New School (Dawson)) to The New School
 5. Tag New School (Dawson) for ProD (and then, if necessary, propose AfD -- or merge-into, if the innovation has persisted in spite of not getting documented in Dawson College)

TIA in any case for your attention.

Hello Commander

Hi there my fellow Australian Wikipedian, you really have been on the project for a long time! Just wanted to ask do you think this page that you created should be deleted? I know you did it way back in 2005 but i just thought it would be right for me to get in touch with you direct. Its only got 2 links to it and i think you would agree at the moment it is pointless. Whats your opinion? If you delete it, remember to remove or modify the entry under See Also at Persia.

Its always great to get in touch with a fellow Australian wikipedia, and an admin no less! I know your activity is decreased these days, but i hope you still have passion for the project, correct me if i am wrong. How have you seen the pedia change since your time on here, has real life caught up with you or is it the project? I think its always best with these sort of questions to ask someone who has experience and you certainly do. Thanks, all the best Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 10:50, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the redirect does exist for a reason :-) Wikipedia:Disambiguation explains it with "This type of redirect can be used to indicate deliberate links to the disambiguation page", and since redirects are cheap it is fine to leave it undeleted.
Yes I still have passion for the project :-)--Commander Keane (talk) 12:05, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of 2006 Winter Olympics highlights

I finally looked at the Google:Custom search on the FAQ

Sorry about my slow reply, but I finally looked at the problem you found. See my comments on:

My working hypothesis is that it may be necessary to (temporarily?) delete the old redirects (e.g., Wikipedia:Business' FAQ) to the new FAQ pages (e.g., Wikipedia:FAQ/Business) to hopefully persuade Google to index the pages under their new URLs, so the subpage hierarchy search will work. Currently Google behaves as if the redirects are the real pages, and they aren't under the new subpage hierarchy as far as Google seems to see. Hopefully someone on WP:VPT will know how Google handles redirects and tell me if I am thinking correctly about this now. Thanks for calling my attention to this problem - evidently, I was blinded by my assumptions about how something should work, as opposed to seeing how it actually does work. --Teratornis (talk) 23:58, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know, I will watch with interest :-) --Commander Keane (talk) 02:47, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. There was a second AFD here that deleted the article; there's been a couple of DRVs as well, and you'll find that it's been recreated at other names as well. Basically, this looks to be an astroturfing job, with no good references to point to the actual notability of the artist in question. There are also some sockpuppet issues surrounding this case, too. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Steven Grant (disambiguation), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Steven Grant (disambiguation) is a disambiguation page that only points to a single article, or no articles at all.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Steven Grant (disambiguation), please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Yes the similarities are inescapable -- the Milesago site is mine, so don't worry about copyright -- I've had to deal with this issue many times before when moving music articles over from Milesgo to Wiki. I'll annotate the text over the next couple of days to get the requisite references, so bear with me. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for the tip re: editing. I'm aware of the Preview button but I'll try and use that more in future or work offline -- I'm probably a very messy editor by your standards, sorry.

Looking for the the map !

Hello, I've have been travelling around the intro / help pages for a while now, and am surprised at the er. lack of consistency, so been making fixes and suggestions here and there. Trouble is can't find any real centralised and seemingly active central location to discuss this. I've seen that you are editing still and your a participant in at least one project - but the project itself wasn't well defined or very active, is there a project you can suggest or have they all dried up at the moment? Keep up the good work :) LeeVJ (talk) 20:09, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi :-) I don't think there is much centralised discussion about help going on. I guess you are talking about Wikipedia:Help Project (they even have a map in the archives!). Perhaps you can try resurrecting Wikipedia:Help Project by placing notcies on the Wikipedia:Village pump and Wikipedia talk:Help desk?--Commander Keane (talk) 23:29, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
and there's Wikipedia:WikiProject Contents and Wikipedia:Welcoming committee, as for centralised discussion, I feel there is a need for a wikiproject banner on these talk pages to create a focus for discussion, and possibly - although not sure a basic ratings system to keep track of any pages that need attention. It's more of an organisational thing than revitalisation, but then organisation often helps the latter anyway... LeeVJ (talk) 00:44, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For sure a WikiProject banner sounds like a good idea.--Commander Keane (talk) 00:47, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There might be a reason why it's not already - unless it's a policy to avoid shouts of 'cabal'. LeeVJ (talk) 00:59, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is just that the help area is underdeveloped, no one has bothered with WikiProject banners until now.--Commander Keane (talk) 01:01, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

<undent> I guess it gets overlooked experienced editors don't need it - often :) and newbies getting confused don't know any better or where to comment! definitely the banners would help, and then we can work from somewhere! I have suggested at Wikipedia:Help Project and asked for their(partly your scope- if it does cover all pages with Help: suffix that would fix a number of sins. cheers , LeeVJ (talk) 01:50, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Softlavender (talk) 02:32, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Misnamed category

Hi Keane, I was wondering if you could rename a category that is misnamed. Category:Musical radio programs should actually be called Category:Music radio programs, without the -al — both for grammar, syntax, meaning, and to match its subcategories. Would you be willing to fix that? I'm not sure I have the skill level yet to do it correctly and thoroughly. If you are able, then thanks very much in advance.
