- January 7 - Alabama defeats Texas 37–21 in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, thereby claiming the 2009 national championship in college football.
- The New Orleans Saints defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Drew Brees is named Super Bowl MVP.
- Spring, dates not finalized: Estimated debuts of four new football leagues: a new Arena Football League, All American Football League, a new United States Football League, and United National Gridiron League. The first of these consists mostly of teams from the now-dissolved AF2.
- August – Meadowlands Stadium, the new home of the New York Giants and Jets, is set to open with a pre-season game. The first regular season game is scheduled to be held September 13.
