Hello and welcome to the U.S. Roads WikiProject, a collaboration area for Wikipedians interested in improving coverage of U.S. Roads. If you would like to help, please jump in and start adding or editing. If you would like to join the group, please sign up here.

Scope

This WikiProject maintains articles relating to roadways of national or regional significance in the United States. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:

Articles not maintained by this project, with some exceptions, include:

  • City and local streets, which are maintained by WP:U.S. Streets. (Some city streets carry numbered highway designations, or did so in the past. For articles where the numbered route comprises a large portion of the local street, WP:USRD will maintain information relating to the numbered highway, while WP:USST will maintain info about the street itself and its surroundings.)
  • Bridges, which are maintained by WP:Bridges. (Where the entire length of a numbered route exists solely on a bridge, WP:USRD will also maintain the article.)
  • State departments of transportation, which are maintained by WikiProject Transport.

Mission

  1. To develop, maintain, and apply standards for all articles within its scope.
  2. To provide support for the active state-level highway WikiProjects by facilitating interstate cooperation and by providing processes and resources for those projects.
  3. Assessment and classification of all project and subproject articles for both informative and WP:1.0 purposes.
  4. To maintain and improve articles on Interstate and U.S. routes, along with national-level concepts like the Good Roads Movement.
  5. To maintain and improve articles on all other articles in its scope that are not within the scope of an active subproject.

Structure

U.S. Roads
The U.S. Roads WikiProject (USRD) serves as an umbrella project for articles relating to roads and highways in the United States. The main project serves as the focal point for coordinating national initiatives, such as standardization of article structure, infoboxes and junction lists. USRD also supports facilities and resources to aid editors in improving articles, such as assessment tracking, and map or shield image requests.
State projects and task forces
State-level task forces, each of which covers one state, consist of the resources for editing highways in that state. New York still has its own WikiProject, which is somewhat autonomous from USRD.
Departments
U.S. Road maps on Commons
U.S. Road shields on Commons
USRD has five project departments, which provide facilities for collaboration, article assessment and other editing resources.
  • Assessment Department—Handles assessment criteria and programs for USRD.
  • Maps Department—Creates and maintains map files for highway articles. Many maps are available on the Commons.
  • Newsletter Department—Creates and distributes a quarterly newsletter for editors that subscribe.
  • Planning Department—Handles future project planning and goals.
  • Shields Task Force—Creates highway marker ("shield") graphics for use in highway articles. Shields for most existing highways have been created and reside on the Commons.

U.S. Roads has developed a set of standards and guidelines that governs notability, naming conventions, article layouts and more. Refer to the links above for more information.

State subprojects can set limited standards that apply to their state only, in order to resolve any conflicts that arise when USRD standards do not work well with a situation unique to that state. All articles not governed by a state-level project should use the USRD standard structure.

Assessment

USRD articles are rated and assessed based on the WP:1.0 Assessment Criteria. Current quality statistics for all USRD articles are shown at right. For more information on the USRD quality ratings and state-level project statistics, see the Assessment Department.

Review

An editor wishing to gain feedback on an article is invited to submit the article for a review. Reviewers will comment on stylistic and content changes that may help in improving the article. In addition to the general Wikipedia request for feedback and Wikipedia peer review, there is also A-Class review (on WikiProject Highways), which is a formal review process for well-developed, GA-class articles to receive additional scrutiny. An article must pass ACR to be rated A-Class by the project. Although not required, it is highly encouraged for an article to undergo an A-Class review prior to being nominated at Featured article candidates.
