Born in Rome, Giambattista Valli is an Italian-French Fashion Designer. He studied both at the European Design Institute and Central Saint Martins School of Art.[1] After positions with Fendi, Krizia, and Emanuel Ungaro, he launched his eponymous collection in March 2005.[2] Giambattista Valli is a fixture on red carpets around the world. His designs have been worn by celebrated actresses, models, and royalty including Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Demi Moore, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Campbell, Mary Kate Olsen, Doutzen Kroes, Iman,[3] Queen Rania of Jordan, and Princess Clotilde of Courau.[4] He shows both ready-to-wear and haute couture collections semiannually in Paris. He is one of the few non-French designers granted membership into the historic[5] Chambre Syndicate de la Haute Couture.

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2012 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2012 Runway Collection was presented on January 22, 2012 in Paris, France.[6] Held in the salon of the Hotel de Crillon,[7] the collection was inspired by the experiences which shaped his career. Drawing from that foundation, opulent shapes, dramatic capes, and delicate crepe flowers referenced his time with Roberto Capucci. More whimsical polka dot dresses were reminiscent of his tenure with Emanuel Ungaro. Of the 41 looks, only one ensemble included pants.[8]

Described as having a ladylike and graceful flair,[9] the palette was a confection of raspberry, cream, and salmon with crystal clusters and beaded flowers. Beginning what would be a long-time collaboration with architect-jeweler, Luigi Scialanga, the collection was accessorized with belts, necklaces, and headpieces cut from sheets of silver.[10] Giambattista Valli is known for effortlessly bridging the gap between old and new, making his pieces feel modern, yet timeless—all at once.[11] The designer employed traditional couture techniques. Signature design details included flower epaulettes, bugle-bead embroidery, embellished cut-out shoulders,[12] oversized bow collars, asymmetrical draping, and elaborate peplums to accentuate the waist.[13]

Antonia Wesseloh opened the runway collection. Sara Blomqvist, Bette Franke, Daria Strokous, Aymeline Valade, Joan Smalls, Mirte Maas, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, Kati Nescher, Anais Pouliot, Jasmine Tookes, Patricia van der Vliet, Karlina Caune, Frida Gustavsson, Caroline Brasch Nielsen, and Kate King walked the show. Laura Kampman closed the presentation.[14]

Invited guests included Salma Hayek, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Diane Kruger, Lee Radziwill, Ulyana Sergeenko, Margherita Missoni, Ines de la Fressange, Farida Khelfa, Franca Sozzani, Tim Blanks, Stefano Tonchi, Suzy Menkes, and Anna Dello Russo.[15]

For his second couture collection, Giambattista Valli wanted to pay homage to the craftsmanship of the atelier—the mastery of tailoring and great couturiers of the past. With midi and maxi hemlines, the collection featured a blend of taffeta, silk, tulle, fur, sequins, lace, and feathers.[16]

“This is going back to the basics for couture, of atelier practice,” noted Giambattista Valli.[17]

Lauded by many as a fairytale personified,[18] the monochromatic collection allowed the silhouettes and textures to take center stage. A springtime motif of floral prints and appliques paired with embellished capes, sophisticated housecoats,[19] structured peplums, and voluminous gowns for a multi-dimensional, yet precise execution.[20]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2012 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2012 Runway Collection was presented on July 1, 2012 in Paris.[21] Transforming his models into flower-fairies, the designer’s inspiration was a duet of floral gardens and Monet waterlily ponds. Even their faces were framed in rose petals. Design details included appliqued ivy leaves, organza carnations, and lace maple leaves. Once again, the designer collaborated with jeweler Luigi Scialanga to create gilded accessories for the collection.[22] The palette included romantic hues of jewel-toned pinks, oxblood reds, and leafy greens. Dramatic layers, voluminous ruffles, and cinched waistlines exemplified the designer’s impeccable tailoring skills. Romantically, butterflies were used to accent the models’ foreheads and lips.[23]

“Couture is a moment when you go really far from fashion,” said the designer.

There were 36 looks. Julia Nobis opened the runway collection. Lindsey Wixson, Isabella Melo, Kati Nescher, Kinga Rajzak, Beatrice Marchetti, Jacquelyn Jablonski, Bette Franke, Magda Laguinge, Carolina Thaler, Mirte Maas, Kolfinna Kristofersdottir, Frida Gustavsson, Kate King, Alison Nix, Maud Welzen, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Nastya Kusakina, and Aymeline Valade walked the show. Elza Luijendijk closed the presentation.[24]

Vanessa Traina, Ulyana Sergeenko, Ines de la Fressange, Franca Sozzani, Michelle Harper, Anna Dello Russo, Tim Blanks, Carine Roitfeld, Lee Radziwill, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Stefano Tonchi, and Remo Ruffini were amongst the front row attendees.[25]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2013 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2013 Runway Collection was presented on January 20, 2013 in Paris[26] at the Hotel de Boisgelin formerly known as the Hotel de La Rochefoucauld-Doudeauville, which today houses the Italian Embassy. The flora and fauna themed-collection reinterpreted everything from tiger, ocelot, and leopard prints to oversized crocodile, python, and alligator scales. The designer referenced a mid-20th century silhouette with cinched waists and full skirts.[27]

Noted by many as being more sleek and restraint,[28] an hourglass silhouette in a classic black and white palette emphasized the collection’s signature structure, embellishments, and embroideries.[29] Asymmetrical pieces were accented with buds fashioned from feathers; crystal appliques; leaf motifs,[30] and abstract fur prints.[31] From mini and tea-length dresses to high-low hemlines and gowns, there was a little something to suit everyone from his hippest vicenarian to his chicest octogenarian clientele.[32] And for the most fashion-daring, there was even a corseted jumpsuit with a train.[33] This season’s collaboration with Luigi Scialanga brought sculpted bronzed belts and jewelry.[34]

Kate Bogucharskaia opened the runway collection. Luca Adamik, Marine Deleeuw, Georgia Hilmer, Kremi Otashliyska, Kaitlin Aas, Andreea Diaconu, Agnes Nabuurs, Carolina Thaler, Iris van Berne, Katya Riabinkina, Lindsey Wixson, Valery Kaufman, Ewa Wladymiruk, Ava Smith, Noam Frost, Daria Strokous, Vanessa Axente, and Louise Parker walked the show. Juliana Schurig closed the presentation.[35]

Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Salma Hayek, Clotilde Courau, Lee Radziwill, Susan Tolson, Virginie Mouzat, Carine Roitfeld, Tim Blanks, Daniel de la Falasise, Karla Otto, Gina Sanders, Jonathan Newhouse, Franca Sozzani, Tallulah Harlech, Elena Perminova, and Miroslava Duma were photographed on the front row.[36]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2013 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2013 Runway Collection was presented on June 30, 2013 in Paris.[37] The collection’s overall source of inspiration was porcelain; the 39 looks were categorized into four vignettes from four geographic regions: Capodimonte of Italy, Wedgwood of England, Sevres of France, and Meissen of Germany.[38]

“Flowers and colors are what women want from me,” noted the designer backstage. “That’s what I give them, but every time I get inspired by something different.[39]

The presentation opened with a series of ethereal dresses that would be suitable as bridalwear, before introducing more masculine suiting elements.[40] Feminine floral china prints such as magnolias and hydrangeas enhanced the collection’s delicate elements and subliminally underscored the porcelain inspiration.[41] That reference could be seen right down to the last detail--this season’s collaboration with Luigi Scialanga gave way to ribbon belts fashioned of metal like the gilt edges and trimmings of the finest European china.[42] The palette was much softer than what one would traditionally expect from an autumn winter collection with shades of ivory, punctuated with vibrant pops of red, blue, and yellow. The former half of the presentation was dominated by more flirty, playful dresses, above the knee.[43]

Elisabeth Erm opened the runway show. Ondria Hardin, Nova Malanova, Sasha Luss, Julia Frauche, Anastasia Ivanova, Maja Salamon, Ashleigh Good, Fei Fei Sun, Tilda Lindstam, Antonina Vasylchenko, Nastya Zhikikh, Ji Hye Park, Jessa Brown, Kate Bogucharskaia, Magdalena Jasek, Elena Todorchuk, Hedvig Palm, Manuela Frey, Diana Moldovan, Esther Heesch, and Lisa Verberght also walked in the show. Du Juan closed the presentation.[44]

Invited guests included: Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Coco Brandolini d’Adda, Lee Radziwill, Tallulah Harlech, Pace Wu, Elena Perminova, Clotilde de Kersauson, Miroslava Duma, Francesca Ruffini, Franca Sozzani, Stefano Tonchi, Remo Ruffini, Elizabeth von Thurn, Anna Dello Russo, Edward Nardoza, Bridget Foley, Alexia Niedzielski, Elizabeth von Guttman, Angelo Flaccavento, and Jessica Diehl.[45]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2014 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2014 Runway Collection was presented on January 19, 2014 in Paris at the Lycee Henri IV. Touted as part fairy tale and part modern-day princess,[46] this season’s muse was decidedly more playful; the designer has made a concerted effort since his debut to modernize the world’s view of couture, while courting a new generation of clientele.[47]

“They’re bad characters and they’ve thrown on their haute couture to run around in the next day,” noted the designer.[48]

Inspired by Impressionists, the designer sculpted embroidered bodices, molded panniers, and jeweled dresses.[49] The silhouette was twisted, draped, and molded into origami folds, tiered skirts[50] and oversized bows.[51] Bustier dresses, undulating peplums, and voluminous skirts continued to define the designer’s signature feminine silhouette.[52] That fluidity was echoed with the more sculptural, geometric jewelry.[53] He kept the hemlines short for a long, lean, leggy look, yet sophisticated by enveloping and ruching contrasting textures.[54] With a palette of ivory, black, blue, and ruby juxtaposed against neon hues of cerise and raspberry,[55] Valli also used colorblocking masterfully to manipulate proportions.[56]

“I dress real women,” said Giambattista Valli. “I don’t want to make a kind of couture that is detached and distant.”[57]

Elodia Prieto opened the runway show. Ophelie Guillermand, Kate Goodling, Josephine Le Tutour, Marine Deleeuw, Estee Rammant, Nastya Sten, Joan Smalls, Ashleigh Good, Frances Coombe, Louise Parker, Lera Tribel, Cindy Bruna, Xiao Wen Ju, Anna Ewers, Auguste Abeliunaite, Esther Heesch, and Jessica Le Bleis walked the show. Ine Neefs closed the presentation.

Tatiana Santo Domingo, Clotilde de Kersauson, Elena Perminova, Caroline Sieber, Franca Sozzani, Livia Firth, Miroslava Duma, Anna Dello Russo, and Derek Blasberg were photographed on the front row.[58]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2014 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2014 Runway Collection was presented on July 6, 2014 in Paris. Adding an air of nostalgia, the 46 ensembles[59] set the scene for this season’s Valli girl in the Alhambra Gardens, with a late 60s- early 70’s flair, summoning the eccentric spirit of Diana Vreeland, giving way to a carefree muse with an insatiable wanderlust.[60]

“The secret of my girls is that they are always eccentric,” said Valli. “They don’t play it, they are.”[61]

Although the collection opened with hint of pajama tops and poolside dresses in graphic summertime black and white stripes,[62] it soon transitioned to cocktail dresses and ballgowns adorned with flowers and furs[63]--and pajama tops paired feather skirts.[64] Many were a taken by surprise initially with this direction for an autumn-winter collection, but it was undoubtedly designed for someone who winters in the southern hemisphere. Summoning the bygone era of old Hollywood,[65] the models walked down the louver-paneled runway[66] with white knotted scarves and oversized glasses to convey a sense of informal luxury.[67] The palette was a soft blend of whte, black, citrus yellow, blush pink, and powder blue.[68] Silhouettes were more streamlined throughout with crop tops and pencil skirts, with even the more dramatic skirts cinched at the waist.[69] Hemlines ranged from knee-length to tea-length and floor-length.[70] The Spanish and Moorish architecture influenced the intricacy of the embroideries throughout the collection, while layers upon layers of tulle and taffeta created an ombre effect with the fuller ballgown skirts.[71]

Kaitlin Aas opened the runway presentation. Sasha Luss, Heidi Krakstrom, Irina Liss, Anna Lund Sorensen, Binx Walton, Malaika Firth, Harleth Kuusik, Maartje Verhoef, Waleska Gorczevski, Irma Spies, Paulina King, Ola Rudnicka, Linn Arvidsson, Kia Low, Tyg Davison, Xiao Wen Ju, Louise Parker, Josephine van Delden, Larissa Marchiori, Vanessa Moody, and Alisa Ahmann walked the show. Manuela Frey closed the presentation.[72]

Emma Watson, Ines de la Fressange, Clotilde de Kersauson, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Elena Perminova, Sara Close, Franca Sozzani, Lee Radziwill, Carine Roitfeld, Deena Abdulaziz, Yao Xingtong, Leigh Lezark, and Alexia Niedzielski were invited guests.[73]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2015 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2015 Runway Collection was presented on January 26, 2015 in Paris. Inspired by the 2012 Metropolitan Museum Art Exhibit: Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, Giambattista designed his collection with the image of an altogether different type of conversation: one between Coco Chanel and Janis Joplin.[74]

“I love the idea of ‘impossible conversations,’ ” explained Giambattista Valli. “But although they seem like opposites, everything you never think could go together—actually, they do. Coco and Janis are both free spirits, with that nonchalant kind of attitude.”[75]

The runway was covered diamond-shaped carpets, which created a pathway for the models to follow as they zig-zagged down the runway. Mirrors overhung the catwalk, adding another dimension to this criss-crossing.[76] Opening with predominantly black and white looks, the presentation paired classic fitted boucle jackets, referencing Chanel, with fuller tulle skirts.[77] Midway through the collection, the silhouette shifted more towards the rocker-infused inspiration, with tunics, albeit embroidered and embellished, layered over long pants. A series of tiered pastel dresses closed the collection.[78] The finale dress became known as the cupcake dress[79] and was worn by Rihanna at the 2015 Grammy Awards.[80] Signature details included banding the bodice, waist, or hips in contrasting fabrics and the use of multidimensional embroideries and sculpted silhouettes.[81] While Victorian collars and long jackets may have given off a more rocker edge, the ostrich feathers and layers of tulle was unapologetically feminine.[82]

Adrienne Juliger opened and closed the runway presentation. Aneta Pajak, Harleth Kuusik, Maja Salamon, Maartje Verhoef, Sabina Lobova, Hedvig Palm, Alexandra Elizabeth, Valery Kaufman, Jing Wen, Liza Ostanina, Vanessa Moody, Clementine Deraedt, Kaitlin Aas, Giselle Marte, Emmy Rappe, Leila Nda, Elena Todorchuk, Namara van Kleeff, Louise Parker, Kia Low, Madison Stubbington, Anna Ewers, Grace Simmons, Jacque Cantelli, Annie van Velzen, and Molly Blair also walked the show.[83]

Invited guests included: Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Derek Blasberg, Dasha Zhukova, Franca Sozzani, Livia Firth, Elena Perminova, Alexia Niedzielski, Sonia Sieff, Tatiana Santo Domingo, and Melusine Ruspoli.[84]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2015 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2015 Runway Collection was presented on July 6, 2015 in Paris at the Grand Palais. Giambattista Valli marked his ninth collection in grand style. With 50 ensembles, the collection opened with a series of exaggerated pouf hemlines--whether at tunics, skirts, and dresses. The silhoutte later shifted to a leaner shape with sleeveless tops and softly flared pants. More vivid hues of green, blue, and orange popped against the staid black and white.[85] This collection was more evening-focused, with drop waist, sheath, mini dresses, closing with a medley of supersized gowns.[86] Honeycomb embroideries and marabou trims enhanced the intricate design details, but floral motifs remained a signature of Valli’s from digitized and embroidered to beaded and crystal.[87] The looks were accessorized with overzised glasses, statement earrings, and diamante necklaces.[88] His grand finale was[89] his confection of sherbert shades that personified every little girl’s dream of the ultimate garden party featuring dresses so overflowing with trains of tiered chiffon ruffles[90] and so wide that the models the gowns nearly reached either side of the runway.[91]

Sasha Pivovarova opened and closed the runway collection. Greta Varlese, Sabina Lobova, Irinia Liss, Vanessa Moody, Maartje Verhoef, So Ra Choi, Annika Krijt, Alix Angieli, Alexandra Elizabeth, Valery Kaufman, Molly Blair, Stella Lucia, Julia Hafstrom, Ala Sekula, Sofia Tesmenitskaya, Aneta Pajak, Karly Loyce, Amilna Estevao, Ola Rudnicka, Magdalena Jasek, Aya Jones, Baya Kolarikova, Julia van Os, Lineisy Montero, Kiki Willems, Julia Hoomans, Ondria Hardin, Zlata Semenko, and Annika Krijt also walked the show.[92]

Jessica Alba, Frol Burimsky, Ulyana Sergeenko, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Lee Radziwill, Carine Roitfeld, Stefano Tonchi, Edward Enninful, Elizabeth von Guttman, Suzanne von Aichinger, John Demsey, Joana Preiss, Eugenie Niarchos, Olivia Palermo, Elena Perminova, Noor Fares, Anna Dello Russo, Roxanne Mesquida, Clotilde de Kersauson, Sabine Getty, and Christina Pitanguy were among the invited guests.[93]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2016 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2016 Runway Collection was presented on January 25, 2016[94] at Le Carreau di Temple.[95] Barely two months past the November 2015, Paris attacks, many were still shellshocked from the horror,[96] but as many others sought to do, Valli paid homage to the city he has called home for nearly two decades. Inspired by four of the city’s gardens: Parc de Bagatelle, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Palais-Royal, and the Jardin des Tuileries.[97]

“It’s kind of a thank-you to Paris,” Giambattista Valli said backstage. “You know that flowers are my obsession.”[98]

Celebrated for his workmanship,[99] Giambattista Valli has an immense talent for manipulating proportions and textures through his voluminous skirts, tiered layers, appliques. and embroideries.[100] Featuring 44 looks,[101] the collection opened with 60’s sheath and shift dresses before transitioning to another inspiration, “Les Soeurs de Napoléon,” a 2013 exhibition at the Marmottan Monet, with an empire silhouette.[102] Whether a mini-caped, a ballon-sleeved,[103] or an a-line mini dress--this season took that inspiration and its floral embroideries to new heights with delicate appliques wrapping around the neck, along the shoulders, and creeping up from the hemlines.[104] Lauded by many in the fashion community as the perfect gowns for award season, the Oscars in particular,[105] there was great deal of attention placed on the finale looks,[106] signature tulle gowns in tomato red, dove grey, and icy pink.[107]

“The city is wounded now, so I thought it was my turn to help celebrate its timeless beauty," said Valli.[108]

Elena Perminova, Livia Firth, Camile Seydoux, Alexia Niedzielski, Sabine Getty, Noor Fares, Lauren Santo Domingo, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis, Olivia Palermo, Margherita Missoni, Eugenie Niarchos, and Anna Dello Russo were among the invited guests.[109]

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2016 Runway Collection

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2016 Runway Collection was presented on July 4, 2016. British violinist Charlie Siem, provided the music, Eugène Ysaÿe’s “Violin Sonata No. 2,” for the presentation. Inspired by French Empress Josephine, the designer unveiled 47 looks that joined the old and the new.[110] The palette included white, black, blush,[111] bordeaux, and lavendar grey.[112] Long tulle trains, exaggerated ruffled shoulders, and empire waistlines[113] were balanced by minis[114] and babydoll dresses.[115] With a nod to 18th century royalty, pouf sleeves and gilt accents[116] framed the poetic and dreamy shapes--from more shunken silhouettes to Valli’s trademark voluminous finale gowns.[117]

The former half off the presentation was more top heavy, with the emphasis on volume in the sleeves and more fitted through the waist; the latter showed fitted bodices and padded hips. Accent details included crystal embroidery along the straps, necklines, and sleeves. The finale ushered out a trio of tulle cupcake-style gowns in lavender, raspberry, and ivory.[118] There was a subtle tension between the more ornately ruffled collars and exaggerated collars[119] juxtaposed against cropped trousers and off-the-shoulder tops.[120] This season, the designer partnered with Buccellati fine jewelry.[121] Longtime friends, Giambattista Valli and Maria Cristina Buccellati previously worked together during his tenure at Emanuel Ungaro when Buccellati provided pieces for a 2004 collection. The famed jeweler dressed models in peridot, ruby, emerald and kunzite to complement the collection’s color story.[122]

Harry Brant, Princess Olympia of Greece, Peter Brant II, Georgina Brandolini, Melanie Thierry, Sabine Getty, Lauren Santo Domingo, Giovanna Battaglia, Oscar Engelbert, Olivia Palermo, Ines de La Fressange, Miroslava Duma, Astrid Munoz, Elizabeth von Guttman, Noor Fares, Alexia Niedzielski, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Ulyana Sergeenko, and Celine Dion were among the invited guests.[123]
