51 bad reference links created while editing on auto-pilot

51 articles in Category:Rivers of Mato Grosso with bad reference links. See results of this search.

The external link is missing an underscore: md_Mato Grosso_brazil.pdf โ†’ md_Mato_Grosso_brazil.pdf

Please fix them, as I fixed this page. Thanks, wbm1058 (talk) 20:58, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wbm1058: Sure - I'll have to take care of it tonight, but I'll get to it then. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:00, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Also, I was wondering about your source for these articles. Did you manually read the names off the map or pull data from an uncited database? You started an article about Verde River (Bolivia), which is now a redirect: Verde River (Bolivia) to Verde River (Mato Grasso). There is an open proposal to merge this with Rio Verde (Guaporรฉ River tributary). I am unable to easily determine whether these are the same river, or two different rivers. It's possible the river in Mato Grosso crossed the Rondรดnia border and the Bolivia border โ€“ why the "(Bolivia)" disambiguation in the title of the original version? wbm1058 (talk) 00:04, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There is a third article, Rio Verde (Mato Grosso), also started by you, which may be the same river too. Was originally titled Verde River (Teles Pires River). โ€“ wbm1058 (talk) 00:35, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wbm1058: I think they were created from lists of redlinks, way back when. Honestly, it's been so long that I can't really remember - back in the early days, when things around here were a bit looser.ย :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:45, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wbm1058: Fixes made. Sorry for not informing you earlier - I'm apparently more than a little woolly-brained tonight. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:55, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that. That was fast! Impressed with your proficiency with AWB. I figured it out. Your source was List of rivers of Mato Grosso, which was created by Kmusser, another editor from the DC area, at 14:56, 13 July 2009โ€Ž . Perhaps you know him. You created the stub based on the red link in his list just over a day later, at 02:34, 15 July 2009. Earlier, List of rivers of Rondรดnia was created at 18:36, 22 June 2009โ€Ž and Rio Verde (Guaporรฉ River tributary) was created by you off that red link at 04:33, 6 July 2009โ€Ž. I started a discussion at Talk:Rio Verde (Guaporรฉ River tributary). โ€“ wbm1058 (talk) 13:49, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wbm1058: My proficiency with AWB is born of long practice - thanks very much.ย :-) I don't know Kmusser (though thinking it over a bit, I believe we have had the odd discussion now and again), and honestly don't recall realizing that the redlink list was as new as it was when I created the articles; I was simply on a spree stubbing rivers from countries all over the world. Like I say...things were a bit looser back in the day. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:28, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I can chime in, the original list of rivers was made by me and it was indeed reading them off of that map manually. Kmusser (talk) 03:42, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kmusser: Ah, thanks. Funny - I hadn't realized my set of edits followed so closely on the heels of yours. Just one of those odd coincidences, I suppose. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:49, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also to answer the question, there are two separate rivers named Rio Verde that are tributaries of the Guaporรฉ, at least according to those Ministry maps, one is entirely in Rondรดnia (currently at Rio Verde (Guaporรฉ River tributary)) and the second and probably more significant one forms part of the Bolivia - Brazil border (currently at Verde River (Mato Grasso)) and does not enter Rondรดnia, so no those shouldn't be merged, but there might need to be some renaming to clarify.Kmusser (talk) 04:03, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar
Every time I refresh my watchlist, there is a new edit (or three) by you, usually fixing a category or something related to it. You work tirelessly to make Wikipedia better in small ways, performing gnomish and thankless tasks that most people are completely unaware of. Potential problem involving gadget

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao. You recently added, with Cat-a-lot, the category "Women state legislators in Georgia (U.S. state)" to the pages Amanda Gourgue and Deanna Jurius. These are clearly not applicable categories, as these state legislators are in New Hampshire, and nothing on their pages mentions Georgia. I have no understanding how these Wikipedia gadgets work, but I just wanted to warn you that it seems that this one is doing some clearly incorrect things.ย โ€“ย RoundSquare (talk) 23:34, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RoundSquare: Not the gadget - it's me, sorry. I chose a wrong pair of articles when I made the edit. Thanks for catching it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:23, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Death Breathing might not be the most auspicious title, but at least the billionth edit was made in mainspace (and not at, say, WP:3RR) and by a well-known(!) editor. Be prepared for the news media getting all over your story again. Speaking of which, could you write a paragraph or 3 for The Signpost. We'll likely put something in News and notes. If you're at a loss for what to write, pretend I asked these questions: "How does it feel making the billionth edit on enWiki using Wikipedia's current software? What meaning does this have for you, or for the project as a whole? What were you thinking when you started editing "Death Breathing"? How soon after making the edit did you find out it was the billionth? How are you going to celebrate? Is there anybody you'd like to thank? How does this milestone compare to (any of your previous milestones)?
BTW, congrats!!!!! Smallbones(smalltalk) 01:36, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

LightningComplexFire, and for some reason mentioned as an it. Steven Pruitt, under the pseudonym Ser Amantio di Nicolao, is the most active human contributor to the English-language version of Wikipedia. It made the equivalent of 659 changes a day for 16 years. Which despite the almost botlike efficiency required to get so many milestones still seems kind of mean. Asartea Talk | Contribs 09:41, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Asartea: I got the impression the article was one of those machine-translated things that get semi-auto-created from time to time. The syntax overall seems a bit fractured for English. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:05, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW there's this old village pump thread, which confirms my memory that numberofedits used to be *higher* than the oldid (and I was in the thread). Graham87 05:18, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Congrats on having the 1 billionth edit! My guess is that deleted edits are probably the largest factor now. I believe numberofedits reflects the number of live undeleted edits while revid reflects the total number of edits. My currently deleted CSD log has several hundred revisions attached to it, if memory serves, that an admin is more than welcome to use for testing if they desire. -- Dolotta (talk) 21:06, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ANI procedure

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

Would you be able to advise on the following situation? I would like to know if there are any ground rules for ANI cases, the way they are handled. I've just been blocked over a content issue by an editor who is not knowledgeable about the subject and has misunderstood a Talk page discussion. And subsequently they ignored my explanation. This reflects the whole procedure. Everybody here is very judgmental but not interested in checking the facts of the accusations, nor the counter evidence which has been completely ignored. I'll spare you the details for now because the background of the case is a dispute over fringe theories with a couple of believers, but it seems that rational thinking doesn't enter the equasion at any level. Nor do Wikipedia policies and guidelines for that matter. Are there no rules at all? Thank you.Saflieni (talk) 03:53, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Saflieni: I'm not sure what you want of me, exactly? ANI has rules - but one of them is that sometimes it's just best to back away, instead of continuing to fight an issue. I would suggest you do that. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:52, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and I'm sure that would make sense under normal circumstances. But if regular people back away each time bullies and/or advocates make life difficult it becomes a process of natural selection favouring those attitudes and ideologies. It's already fifty shades of dishonesty in my experience. The negative impact on Wikipedia content is clearly visible, which is why I decided to stick it out in this specific case concerning fringe theories about genocide. That's a potentially dangerous issue to let slide, along with health and safety topics. Wikipedia was not created to end up as another source of misinformation on the internet, I believe. Saflieni (talk) 08:04, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page watcher) @Saflieni: you have not just been blocked - if you are blocked you wouldn't have been able to post here. You have been blocked in the past, but that block expired at 20:49, 29 December 2020 (UTC) - two and a half weeks ago. --Redrose64 ๐ŸŒน (talk) 08:53, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Redrose64. It's a ban, you are right. Cleared that up. Now the rest of it: I'm banned over a content dispute, which I explain here. The block was for using the word lies in the context explained in WP:IUC under 2d, but I agreed that my choice of language was too confrontational. I didn't use such words afterwards as far as I know so I guess they had to invent something else. In both cases (again: the first one deserved, the second not) it was an admin who had previously inserted themselves as parties in the discussion who blocked/banned me, which I find a questionable use of privileges. Saflieni (talk) 09:30, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User:Saflieni - Either appeal the ban to WP:AN, or don't appeal the ban. I tried to caution you that editors who complain about how unfair or unfriendly Wikipedia is usually find it to be an unfriendly place. You said that I was depersonalizing you. It appears that you are making it impossible to address your conduct, because you either deflect any criticism as depersonalizing, or counterattack that you are being personally attacked. You were topic-banned for your conduct in a content dispute. Content disputes complicated by user conduct are a common problem in Wikipedia, and sometimes can be dealt with by content resolution, and sometimes require a conduct remedy. You made it impossible to deal with the content, because of your conduct. (In my opinion, you got off easy. You were not blocked.) Either appeal the ban to WP:AN, or don't appeal the ban, and stop discussing it. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Saflieni: You've had some very good advice here from two other long-standing editors; I would suggest that you take it into account. Drop the issue and walk away from it - continuing to fight can lead to nothing good. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:18, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Who's fighting? I've respectfully asked you a sincere question and have explained why. You were listed as an experienced editor available for advice. But here's one of the problems I'm facing. A few editors hound me all over Wikipedia to leave false accusations and the most horrible insults to paint me into a corner. Yet they never respond to my invitations to have a normal dialogue.[3] It's the trolling behaviour you find everywhere where people interact from behind a computerscreen. They don't realize that the person on the other side is a flesh and blood human being. Robert McClenon's information is not true btw. Saflieni (talk) 17:03, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Saflieni: I'm not accusing you of fighting with me. But this issue has been raised, and dealt with, at ANI...yet you're asking for more assistance from other editors after its resolution. Hence my advice. It's been dealt with at ANI. Leave it be.
If you want to overcome the topic block, look at Wikipedia:Banning policy. In the meantime I would recommend lying low and doing the best, most non-controversial editing you can in other subject areas. After at least six months - preferably a few more - you can appeal for the block to be revised. But don't continue pushing the issue now - it will only aggravate matters further. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:31, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but I specifically asked about rules and regulations, not for your assistance in continuing the ANI case. The topic block isn't even my main concern either. My edits kept disappearing anyway - deleted, reverted, hashed up by the fringe theory advocates who managed to claim ownership of the page. I'm more concerned about the fifty shades I mentioned. There was no evidence, just allegations. Nobody bothered to read my defence nor check anything. In the end they massaged a minor content issue into something suggestive of ... well, still nothing worth mentioning. Yet everybody got really worked up, like a pelting mob. That can't be right. But anyway. Not your problem I guess. Good luck Saflieni (talk) 19:29, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, crikey. Please read WP:BLOCKBANDIFF and do not use one term as if it were equivalent to the other. --Redrose64 ๐ŸŒน (talk) 21:41, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Redrose64 and Robert McClenon Thanks very much for the assist on this. Sorry to leave you with cleanup duty; I'm generally a bit non-confrontational by nature, but had the added dis(?)advantage of being out with friends for most of the day today, and so couldn't respond as I might have liked. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:18, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No need to become unpleasant. The explanation of the editor who issued the ban shows me right (and then some): [4]. No evidence, rebuttals ignored, allegations taken at face value, and a difference of opinions about content as reason for the ban. Isn't this the opposite of what ANI was intended for? So much for "all Wikipedians are equal". For anyone with a sense of fairness: The accusing party just explained to me last night that their polarizing language was not directed at genocide scholars as I thought, but at me personally.[5] Combine that attitude with their shopping for blocks and bans at the Noticeboards where evidence is ignored and what do you get? It's a legitimate question. I'll try Arbcom again, but am now afraid it will be disrupted again like before.Saflieni (talk) 06:55, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Saflieni: Stop. Leave it alone and stop. And read this. You are risking another block, and a longer one this time. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:57, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize. How did we go from I would like to know if there are any ground rules for ANI cases, the way they are handled. to this? I'll file my appeal and will leave you alone.Saflieni (talk) 07:52, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully: I've apologized. I found the WP:CANVASS page and read it. It's so common that I never realized it's frowned upon. Now I know. It really wasn't my intention, so I hope we can put it to rest.Saflieni (talk) 20:09, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Saflieni: Yes, certainly - and I hope that my comments weren't taken as a threat. More as a warning - I wanted to give you the chance to be aware before plunging over the edge. As for WP:CANVAS - I admit, it is tricky sometimes to spot what's canvassing and what isn't. My own personal rule from long years' engagement here is to avoid anything that has even the appearance of canvassing. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:23, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Possibly: Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed. I've always enjoyed miniature painting, and did a little run of articles like that a few years ago. My own particular favorite is Clarissa Peters Russell - the original source I had for her (the catalog of the inaugural exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts) says something to the effect that "not much is known about her". Thirty years later, and...well, you can see the result of additional scholarship.ย :-)

Sam fonteyn

Hello, I have noticed that you've been editing the page of Sam Fonteyn. He is my grandfather and I have a picture I would like to put up. Is there anyway you can help me with this? Sorry I'm rubbish with all of this. Thanks. Lostnspaced (talk) 13:17, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Lostnspaced: I would begin by looking at Wikipedia:Images: that will give you a lot of resources to tell you what to do. Best thing to do would be to upload the image on Wikimedia Commons, assuming you hold the copyright to it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:01, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of category

Hi there Ser Amantio. Just wanted to ask for your reasoning behind this edit. Was it because the subject already belonged to the subcategory Category:South Korean television actresses?

Sdrqaz (talk) 19:36, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdrqaz: And the category Category:21st-century South Korean actresses as well, yes. Same for a lot of those I removed from the parent category. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:37, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The explanation was much appreciated, thanks. Sdrqaz (talk) 19:44, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdrqaz: Surely - any time. Happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:45, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance needed

You seem to have very high credentials with Wikipedia. I am requesting assistance. A group of people have hi-jacked a page that I have special interest in and have blocked me and others out of being able to edit it. It is causing harm to many families associated with the organization. Can you help edit and protect? Donoharm2021 (talk) 18:45, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Donoharm2021: I can take a look at the article, but I can make no guarantees. What you describe sounds suspiciously like ownership - see WP:OWN for more information on that. Also, I have no higher credentials than many other editors - I've simply been here longer, and done more, than many other editors. That doesn't give me any special abilities. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:06, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for looking. We are not looking to own the page, only to be able to edit and put protection if possible. I have seen that you added authority control to a few school pages that have had similar issues and maybe it helped? The page is Bulloch Academy. While we would love to have the content removed from the page altogether, we would be most grateful to have the harmful content pushed down so that this description does not show up in the sidebar when the school is searched on Google. At this point, all truthful information about the school has been removed from the page and we are blocked out of editing. We have gone through all of the suggested Wikipedia resolutions and have been met with many roadblocks. Iโ€™ll spare you of all of the heartache and phone calls that we have had from our minority students and parents who are upset and hurt by this action. Thank you for any help that you can offer. Donoharm2021 (talk) 20:25, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Donoharm2021: There's really only one way to push the content you describe down the page, and that would be to expand the article to provide a fuller picture of the entirety of the school's history and curriculum. But the information to which you refer is sourced, and should not be removed. It would be better to contextualize it.
As the article is protected, you can request edits on the talk page. That is what I would do - ask people to add sections about curriculum, athletics, etc. (making sure to provide sources as necessary). Otherwise that's all I can suggest. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:33, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestions. We will try this when protections have expired on the page. Any suggestions for having an IP address and account unblocked? My request was denied and the account was identified as a sock puppet. Donoharm2021 (talk) 20:58, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Donoharm2021: I would take that question up with the administrator that blocked you initially: explain the situation and ask for advice. It may be there's nothing further you can do, but they may be able to offer better guidance than I could; I'm afraid I don't deal very often with sockpuppetry issues.--Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:32, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions. Donoharm2021 (talk) 00:24, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Donoharm2021: Certainly - good luck to you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:59, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Weird fiction/Iain Banks

Your edit to the Iain Banks page drew my attention to the list of Weird Fiction writers.

The list lacks references for many of the writers in the 1980-present section, including Iain Banks. I have been unable to find any reliable sources that cite Iain Banks as being a writer of Weird Fiction (the genre, as opposed to fiction that is a bit weird), and that is why I ended up reverting your edit on his page and also removing him from the list on the Weird Fiction writers page.

In an odd way, I'd like to thank you for drawing my attention to it, as trying to reference the 1980-present section properly will give me a nice little project to keep me occupied on an evening.ย :)

All the best. - H. Carver (talk) 02:04, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@H. Carver: Certainly - happy to be of help.ย :-) I figured that was likely to be the case with one or two of them, to say the least. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:09, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for French translation assistance

Hello! I'm writing to ask for your help expanding the new article on the Napoleonic looting of art. I recently translated most of it from the Italian Wikipedia, and I'm hoping to improve it up to GA quality. One of the problems that the page has is that it is mostly written, currently, from an Italian perspectiveโ€”it seems like the French Wikipedia article entry might be able to help with that, but I, alas, don't know the language. I saw your name on the French WP: WikiProject Intertranswiki page and thought I'd ask. Would you be interested/available to help? Humbly, โ€”WingedSerif (talk) 21:23, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wingedserif: I can take a look, but not sure when - perhaps this weekend. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:37, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
