Must be in contact with you

[edit]

Hello Nicolao!

I go by Ari, I wanted to drop you a line because I noticed you made edits to the Ursula Bellah (formerly Pearson) wiki page and wanted to talk with you. I had known her since I was a baby, when she passed in 2006 I was devastated, barely in 7th grade at the time. She was a lifelong friend of my family, and I was hoping to speak with someone who may recall more details about her that I may not have known (I was very young and some things were never disclosed to me naturally). I have a copy of her Surviving the Judas Factor book she gave to us a few years before she passed of pancreatic cancer. Hope to be in touch soon. I can be reached at ramenmangaka@gmail.com please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2606:6000:514D:6200:FDC8:7B28:A2CF:3FDC (talk) 07:35, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

19th and 20th century American writers

[edit]

I undid your edits on Katharine Lee Bates that deleted her from the 19th and 20th century lists of American writers. I believe that she belongs on these lists. If you still think she does not, would you kindly explain why not? Thanks for your work. AnaSoc (talk) 23:45, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@AnaSoc: She's already in the categories Category:19th-century American poets and Category:20th-century American poets...they're child categories of Category:19th-century American writers and Category:20th-century American writers. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:20, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability on Wikipedia

[edit]

HI, I am doing a Toastmaster's speech on the reliability of Wikipedia. I am hoping you might be available for a short interview on the subject of reliability on Wikipedia. I would only use the information you provide as part of a speech to my Toastmaster's club of about 20 members.

Please let me know if you are available.

Canadian male guitarists

[edit]

Hey Ser Amantio--what's with the gendering? I thought we weren't doing that anymore except for maybe in exceptional circumstances. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:31, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Drmies: Haven't heard anything - what'd I miss? I thought gendering was fine in these instances because they're also categorized as subsets of Category:Canadian guitarists. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:32, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh I haven't heard anything since that shitstorm a few years ago, but I really thought the upshot of that was we weren't doing that as a general sort of rule. Drmies (talk) 21:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: My sense is that things have changed over the past couple of years...I sense a broad acceptance of gendered categories for women, and an attendant acceptance of gendered categories for men. The latter is much slower in coming, but I think it's finally starting to be de rigeur more often than not. Right now, though, we have a fair number of underpopulated categories, and I figure that, at least, ought to be changed. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:48, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Carlo Arrigoni

[edit]

Good morning, I recognise your name as one who makes generally reliable specialised edits, so I'd like to ask the reason why you deleted the Italian musician category under Carlo Arrigoni. The article makes specific mention of public performances during his career, so I would have thought it was appropriate. Sweetpool50 (talk) 09:43, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm, family in Virginia, I might at some point take you up on that. It's a staple in my original neck of the woods, from fine dining to truck stops and pretty much you can order it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. (Just never, ever order it in Tennessee, you will get fried chicken pounded flat. I was totally shocked.) I think in the last decade, I've managed to find it twice. Once in Belize cooked very nicely by a Texan and once in Oklahoma while visiting family. Oh yeah and with okra, both times. (Methinks the chefs were trying to spoil me, as I never find okra here in Mexico). SusunW (talk) 19:43, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Quinn Cummings

[edit]

Why did you copy Quinn Cummings from Category:American women bloggers to Category:American bloggers? -- Pemilligan (talk) 20:32, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pemilligan: We generally treat by-gender subcategories as non-diffused subcategories of the parent; despite the hatnote in the parent category I can't see that Category:American bloggers would be any different. If there is a reason in policy please let me know; I'd be happy to take a look. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:44, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for explaining. Perhaps the hatnote should be removed. -- Pemilligan (talk) 21:17, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Radio categories

[edit]

On Jim Norton (comedian) you removed Category:American radio personalities because its child category Category:Radio personalities from New York City is included. I had undone this because I would not have thought these two were related, something pointed out to me by Ponyo. To me American Radio Personalities are people who broadcast on the radio in America, and Radio personalities from New York City are people who broadcast that are from NYC. The distinction being where they were born/live vs where they work. Upon review I see the header of the NYC category says Radio personalities in the greater New York media market, however I would not have expected that. It would be helpful if you could add an edit summary explaining why you are removing these so it is clear to people, as per WP:FIES. Thank you - Galatz גאליץשיחה Talk 20:42, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Galatz: Well, I often do those sorts of things using a tool that autopopulates its own edit summary. Find a grave

[edit]

Please don't ever use Find a Grave as a source for information, like you did at Charity Wright Cook. Please see WP:FINDAGRAVE-EL, where it is indicated that it should "almost never" be used as a reference. In this particular case, the date of birth matches what is given at Find a grave, but that doesn't match the information on the gravestone (aged 76 years 11 months 11 days). If information is only available at find a grave and not on any reliable site, please simply don't include it.

Something like genealogytrails[1] is also an unreliable source, but the source they reprint may be reliable, and should be sourced directly (which also avoids the potential risk that the republication of it on the trails website is a copyvio, which we shouldn't link to). Strangely, that source lists 10 childre,, find a grave lists 7 (another reason not to trust find a grave), and you claim they had 11 children? Fram (talk) 07:37, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fram@ I'm aware of Find-a-Grave's issues; I try to link to it as sparingly as possible. In this instance, the birthdate is actually backed up by another site as well (save for a difference of a day...given the time period involved, this is not something that concerned me unduly.) Where that site gets its info I don't know.
As for genealogytrails, I know nothing about that one. I will have to look and see where the information comes from (actually, the page says Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy). My source for 11 children was a print source. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:07, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've cleaned up the article, removing the unreliable sources and the info sourced to those. Fram (talk) 14:17, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fram@ Thanks - as you can see I'm a bit distracted this morning. :-) (For what it's worth, the Westminster Handbook has its issues, too - it claims she was commissioned by Bush Run Meeting, but I know that's wrong because I did a little quick research. No such place ever existed.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:21, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "Dmytro Kremin" article

[edit]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nikolao,

When you have a spare moment, please take a look at the Wikipedia page "Dmytro Kremin" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmytro_Kremin) -- I wrote this article about D.Kremin. Since my article got the tugs about conflict of interest and lack of citations (??? -- there's quite enough of verifiable sources and citations) in May 2018, this article has been edited and fixed by other contributors and editors because I was advised not to edit it...

There is no "promotionism" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard/Archive_130#Dmytro_Kremin), to top it all -- I am not a paid editor, I'm a writer (I live in Vancouver, Canada, for almost 20 years but originally from Ukraine. Simply there's nobody knows better the subject -- that's why I wrote this article), it's not a "puff" as Scope Creep and Cordless Larry were talking about. This article is fair and true, and all the sources are true, reliable, and listed below the article. It had and has a totally neutral point of view. If now this article looks acceptable to you, then I'd like to ask you a favour -- please help me to remove the tug/tugs

and

. I appreciate your time with it and thank you!

Sincerely,

The article Cripple Creek, Virginia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources proving notability, no population count provided. Fails WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. @Kirbanzo: I left a message on your talk page...OK, in the late 18th century that area was a spiders web of French and Native American and New World folks hoping that they could in some way make the British go away. It is at best taxing for me to endure this because if people actually read BOOKS OLD BOOKS they could find this. Perhaps the reading of an older Fincastle Va History book might be helpful? From small acorn stubs, do might article oaks grow. I m one person. I tend to focus on West Virginia history. AND I am sorry we all cant perform to your timeline. Perhaps if you used your time reading and not deleting you too could also help build the articles as opposed to hoping someone else does it. NOT A SOUL is stopping you from editing in ALL BY YOUR SELFCoal town guy (talk) 00:44, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts on Draft:Minatti and Draft:Walinwa? I merged much of Minatti to Lake Hancock at least, but seems like it should have its own article based on notability criteria. Draft:Marshall Academy also languishes in draft space. I thought high schools were presumed notable? FloridaArmy (talk) 01:06, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@FloridaArmy: Personally, I see nothing wrong with any of those as standalone articles. That being said, I also would have no problem were the community articles merged into something larger - as long as the information is preserved I don't think the format is as critical. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:14, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Merging is definitely better than nothing but it does tend to limit expansion and has other limitations as far as categories, links, and infoboxes go. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:17, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@FloridaArmy: Fair point. And I do tend to be in favor of separate articles. But if someone else were to insist on merging I generally wouldn't push the point. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:28, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alec Monteath

[edit]

How did you grow an interest into Alec Monteath? And I was doing some of my own research and came across the name Caroline grant do you know who she may be. Red roid Gibson (talk) 03:16, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a reason you are copying all the members of subcategories of Category:American bloggers into the parent category as well? That makes the parent category rather hard to navigate. --GRuban (talk) 15:31, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@GRuban: By-gender categories have traditionally been treated as non-diffusing: see Category:American male novelists and Category:American women novelists, for instance. I have investigated, but haven't seen a particular reason bloggers should be treated any differently. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:34, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --GRuban (talk) 16:30, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The numbers of novelists in the categories you mention are interesting: 4,718 men vs 3,474 women. That means that over 42% of the biographies of novelists on Wikipedia are about women. I wonder if that reflects reality or whether it is a result of our efforts to cover women writers. In regard to best sellers, this analysis shows that women have certainly been catching up. Indeed, in certain categories, women have become far more successful than men.--Ipigott (talk) 11:26, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott: There used to be a couple of websites that collected bibliographies for mystery writers, and I need to dig them up to see what lists we can generate from those. I have a feeling there are a lot of women among their number that we aren't covering yet. Just go into any bookstore and look at the piles of cozy mystery novels on the shelves. I think one can make an argument that most, if not all, of the writers meet the notability requirement. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:05, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It would be good if you could help us to cover some of the deserving female novelists we might have forgotten.--Ipigott (talk) 18:05, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'll poke around later and see if I can find any of those websites again. I know one of them, that I really liked, seems to have gone offline a couple of years ago, unfortunately - it was far and away the most comprehensive I'd been able to find. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:16, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Testing Authority control tag

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao, How are you? I wonder if you could help me. Every so I often I see your signature regarding testing Authority control tag on an article and testing it. Would it possible if you can test this article, Alan Craft and see if the Authority control is working. I have it on several on the James Spence Medal list, some have worked, and some not. It is weird. I think that template may be stopped it appearing. Thanks. scope_creep (talk) 22:33, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Scope creep: It doesn't appear for me, either, but that's fine. My understanding of the template is that it won't appear if Wikidata isn't properly populated with the requisite information. Once Wikidata is populated, the template will show up. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:54, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Colonial Willamsburg

[edit]

I'm taking this discussion to your talk page. Church Hill is a very old part of Richmond. Must have been an interesting place for your father to live. I had no reason to visit there much when I lived there. I have such fond memories of Williamsburg. It was one of the first places we chose to visit when we moved there. I like history and the buildings at Williamsburg are a national treasure. The costumed interpreters did such a great job of staying in their roles, no matter what any visitor said to them. I mentioned earlier that we left because of the backwardness of Richmond, the backwardness had more to do with racial and religious intolerance we started seeing over time. One of my children started repeating intolerant comments that other children were saying, and the teachers were questioning their elementary school students on Monday, asking if they had gone to church the day before (we had not). I thought it was time to return to a more tolerant coast. I envy your life in Virginia, although the traffic in Washington DC is probably still awful--it was in the eighties. MauraWen (talk) 19:57, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MauraWen: Dad left when he was six, so I don't know that he remembers that much. My great-grandparents lived over on Patterson, and that's where he spent most of his time when he was visiting.
And I love Virginia dearly, but the attitudes you describe don't surprise me in the least. I only just learned about Green v. County School Board of New Kent County a couple of years ago, for instance, and it stings me that something like that could still be going on in New Kent County, where I probably have family even today, as recently as 1968. That said...Richmond has changed a lot, and I suspect the suburbs have as well. Richmond proper is a lot hipper and younger - VCU and the med school dominate the local economy so that they've really affected the demographics.
Regardless: Virginia's a complex place. I think a lot of people don't fully appreciate that sometimes. I think we get lumped in with the rest of the South a lot, and that's not quite apposite at all.
DC traffic's bad as it's ever been...although my commute's not bad. Largely because a.) it begins after rush hour, and b.) it's against traffic. Incidentally, you mentioned The Torpedo Factory: I know it well. I've forgotten how many hours I've spent there over the years. I went to high school in Alexandria (we have our Friday reunion get-together at the Torpedo Factory every year), and still live about fifteen minutes south of town. It's pleasant. Been a few changes recently, but not too many. They got rid of the little food pavilion and replaced it with a single restaurant...that's about it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:13, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Thanks for sharing all that. Small world that you spent so much time at the Torpedo Factory. We would stop by there every time we came to the city. Brings back so many memories. And I am very familiar with Patterson Avenue. I drove down Patterson weekly. Yes, Virginia is complex, as is the rest of the south. Having spent a year in South Carolina, four months in Alabama, and traveled quite a bit thru the South, I don't really see Virginia as being a southern state. Its more like a sibling of Maryland and distant cousin to New England, I believe. Beautiful place, though, wonderful people and great food (I had never had barbecue, grits sweet iced tea or crab cakes until I moved to Virginia). I am glad I lived there. Thanks for sharing the link about the dialects of the South. Fascinating! I wish the page had an audio, it would have been fun to hear the different regional dialects. MauraWen (talk) 07:35, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MauraWen: Virginia is most definitely southern, but it's not the South that people tend to think of. I'm often reminded of this exchange from Gone With the Wind:
"Ashley Wilkes said they had an awful lot of scenery and music. Ashley liked Europe. He’s always talking about it."
"Well — you know how the Wilkes are. They are kind of queer about music and books and scenery. Mother says it’s because their grandfather came from Virginia. She says Virginians set quite a store by such things."
"They can have ’em. Give me a good horse to ride and some good licker to drink and a good girl to court and a bad girl to have fun with and anybody can have their Europe...."
Virginians, to me, are a shade more genteel than other Southerners. What Alabamans and Georgians like to do with deeds, we do with words. Our goals are often the same - Virginia has been culturally in lockstep with other Southern states for much of its history. It's simply that we choose to go about things in a slightly different way.
Maryland, too, is a Southern state in many parts...I saw more Confederate flags over in Charles County the last time I was there than I expected so close to DC. (I know, I know...but don't forget, too, that Baltimore was a more zealously Confederate city than many in the actual Confederacy during the Civil War years. I wish Baltimore remembered that a bit more sometimes...) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:35, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding template Cleanup federal judge bio

[edit]

Quick note. Template Cleanup federal judge bio does not support the date parameter. It merely places all such tagged files into a single cleanup category. While placing a date parameter causes no harm, it doesn't accomplish anything useful either. Safiel (talk) 20:54, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article Master of the Staufen Altarpiece has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources, and no one is translating it. The article should be deleted as it's unencyclopedic in it's current state and likely to stay that way. Due to no sources, fails WP:GNG and WP:NBIO.

Kirbanzo (talk) 03:01, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ipigott: Thanks - I'll take a look when I have a little time to puzzle it out. I did a cursory bit of research yesterday and discovered that there have, at times, apparently been several candidates for the role, but that "Master of the Staufen Altarpiece" is outdated. Authority control to a page about a company

[edit]

With this edit you added an Authority Control template to a page about a company, Isotta Fraschini, not a person. I always thought the Authority Control template was for people only. But I'm not an experienced editor at all, so I hesitate to undo your edit. Is there perhaps a specific reason you added the template to a page about a company? Mark in wiki (talk) 08:32, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mark in wiki: The simple answer is, I missed removing it from my list while using AWB...I hadn't intended, necessarily, to add the template there. That being said: I have seen it used on a number of company articles as well, so it's a potentially legitimate use.
I'm not quite sure of the full parameters, but authority control isn't solely for use on biographies. I've seen it used on articles about artworks, for instance, and a few books, if I recall correctly, in addition to the articles about companies. I'm trying to only add it to biographical articles at the moment, but I don't think it's necessarily a problem if it's used somewhere else as well. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 08:36, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My Wikipedia page

[edit]

Hello, Ser Amantio!

The Wikipedia page about me (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Sager_Weinstein) doesn't list my three most recent books. But I don't want to violate Wikipedia guidelines by editing it myself. Since you're the most recent person to edit the page, I thought I'd drop you a note. If you think the three new books are notable enough to include, would you be willing to add them? They are:

Hyacinth And The Secrets Beneath (released in the UK as The City of Secret Rivers)

Hyacinth And The Stone Thief (released in the UK as The City of Guardian Stones)

Lyric McKerrigan, Secret Librarian

No worries if you don't feel they're worth adding. In either case, thanks for considering the request!

With best wishes, --Jacob Sager Weinstein (talk) 15:01, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. A few weeks ago, higher on this page in fact, you said that by-gender categories were traditionally treated as non-diffusing. Authority control

[edit]

Hi, you are popping up at quite a few of my article creations at the moment , such as here. What is the point of this? These people never wrote anything, don't have portraits etc and are long dead, so I don't think it is going to change. Your edit summaries seem to indicate that you are testing but you don't revert even though the template doesn't actually seem to have any effect on the article when viewed etc. I know you've wracked up millions of edits but a lot of them seem to have come from this (to me) mindless type of activity whose main impact seems to be to light up my watchlist. Since most items of my watchlist attract controversial edits of a far worse nature, your contributions can mask something more serious in the recent history.

I wouldn't mind if there was some gain but I'm not seeing it, sorry. Is this all part of the subtle (and rather dangerous) attempts to integrate with Wikidata? - Sitush (talk) 04:40, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sitush: Well...I'm not convinced it's not going to change. The template may not have any effect now, but that doesn't mean that things won't change in the future (I've seen those authority controls developed for a lot of people for whom I wouldn't have expected to see them). Personally, I'm in favor of more integration with Wikidata. I do see the concerns - for that matter, I've got one or two of my own - but I think we're moving to a point where that integration does more good than harm. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:12, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When it happens, add it. We can do without the clutter on watchlists and in articles. - Sitush (talk) 05:51, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it would be better to get consensus and do it by bot, or find out that there isn't consensus and don't do it. I personally oppose these additions, ceryainly the empty ones, but the use of the template in general. It should be replaced by one that is a) selective (only show ones that are useful for our readers on that specific article, e.g. a Swedish database only on articles directly connected to Sweden) and b) readable (give understandable name of the database, instead of some meaningless ID plus abbreviation only a few diehards recognise). Authority Control as it stands is not reader-oriented at all, and not well-thought out. Coupled with the quality problems it has (both because of Wikidata issues, and because of issues with some of the linked sources), it does now more harm than good. Fram (talk) 06:40, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Fram: I actually like the template as it stands now. And while I agree that Wikidata has its issues, a.) I think a lot of those are being ironed out, and b.) I think for good or ill, we're stuck with it, and we need to work with it.
Regardless. I thought the authority control issue had been settled, but I'm happy to start a discussion about its utility somewhere, or to chime in on one if it's started elsewhere. I can start it myself - just point me in the right direction. If it's settled, then it would be better that a bot made these edits instead of a human making "test" edits by the thousands (I see you have now removed the "test" bit though). I still have no idea why anyone would believe that having this Norse page would be a useful addition to the page about a Dutch illustrator on the English Wikipedia. That's why we have Wikidata, for all these links which are correct but not of any value to 99.9% of our readers. And that's why we should only have links to a handful of informative, useful, readable such links on the page, not an indiscriminate dropzone. You just added the template to Jozef Cantré, a page I created. It has 9 AC links, but the BNE is useless here, ISNI is highly redundant, LoC, while in English, is barely informative here. Coupled with the for most readers meaningless abbreviations plus IDs (instead of slightly longer, more informative names without IDs), and you end up with something which could be a lot better and user-friendly, but is now created from the POV of a database. Linnea Sinclair

[edit]

Why did you add a non-fiction writers category to Linnea Sinclair? I think she only writes sff. Debresser (talk) 20:15, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Debresser: Huh. Thanks for spotting...I see how she made it into the list. Category:American paranormal romance writers is a subcat of Category:American writers on paranormal topics, which is a subcat of Category:American non-fiction writers. Never would have occurred to me...I'll check my list of names and remove a few accordingly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:21, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate how many people on my watchlist you've removed from the list of fiction writers, but Mary Virginia Terhune was known for both. Fred (talk) 15:18, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mention

[edit]

In case you do not get the pings, you have been mentioned at User_talk:BrownHairedGirl#Indian_writer_cats. I've long disliked your approach but it seems that I am at least not alone. Is there any chance, at least, of you checking whether I have edited an article before you edit it? And, if I have, thinking twice about whether your proposed edit is actually worthwhile? The articles I edit in the Indic sphere tend to be very problematic - hence the two sanctions regimes in place - and it doesn't help with monitoring things when mindless, semi-automated/fully automated trivial contributions light up my watchlist. I know you think your edits are important but usually, at least on the Indic stuff, they are not. That still leaves a vast swathe of stuff where you can indulge in your apparent obsession with increasing your edit count. - Sitush (talk) 07:18, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Flannery O'Connor

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao:

I wondered about your category edit on Flannery_O'Connor. Your edit indicates that she is from Connecticut, but she was born in Georgia. Perhaps you want to change it?

Thanks! Bob Cummings (talk) 21:38, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@BobCummings: She is in the category Category:People from Ridgefield, Connecticut, though, so it fits. Whether or not that category is accurate I cannot say...it appears, from the body of the text, to be potentially legitimate.
If the question is, why didn't I add the category Category:Catholics from Georgia (U.S. state) yet, the answer is: I hadn't gotten around to it yet. I would have in a day or so, most likely, as I fill out the various states. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:14, 24 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Found a remotely relevant policy at WP:DEFINITE. At the very end, under "Follow reliable sources for names of persons". It says to follow reliable sources. But in the conventions of english language while writing a name with initials, spaces between initials are mostly omitted. Mostly, but not always. Even though that policy doesnt say anything about spaces between initials, one of the examples provided (J. P. Morgan) does have spaces between the initials. In short, yeah, both are acceptable per the reliable sources. Apologies for the pointless discussion lol. See you around I made a correction in the previous comment.usernamekiran(talk) 17:29, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Dickson Matorwa requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. William & Mary edit-a-thon this Saturday at Omohundro Institute

[edit]

Hello! I am messaging after reading the great profile about you and your work at the William & Mary alumni magazine. I am traveling to Virginia tomorrow (Thursday) as part of symposium at the Omohundro Institute on Friday called, "My Mother Was a Computer": Legacies of Gender and Technology. Here's a link to the program: Program Link. The following day (Saturday) I am also co-facilitating an edit-a-thon on the topic of #VastEarlyAmerica, link to announcement. In the planning of the event, I asked might there be other Wikipedians in the area I could get in touch with -- not realizing the current most active Wikipedian of all time was an alum of W&M!

I apologize for contacting you only a couple of days before the event, and not earlier. Still, I thought I would reach out and ask if there might be the slimmest chance that you'll be available to join us at all during the 10:00am to 2:00pm time period of the edit-a-thon. Also, do you know of anyone else that may be interested and/or available to join? Regardless of your answer, I hope this message finds you well and will alert folks at the edit-a-thon of your contributions and projects. --Vaparedes (talk) 07:43, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vaparedes: Rats. Had I known about this earlier I might have been able to plan to come. As it stands, I don't think I can make it - it's just enough of a drive that I'd need to take the weekend, and I have some errands and things that I need to attend to. Sorry.
May I ask - who are you working with to facilitate the edit-a-thon at Swem? I did have a contact with whom I worked on an edit-a-thon a couple of years ago. Otherwise I don't know many people you could talk to - my contacts were more in the art/art history and music departments.
Also, have you dropped a note over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red regarding the 100 by 2019 initiative? I hadn't seen anything. We've got a couple of other things planned for this month and next, but adding a few early American women to the lists shouldn't be difficult. :-)
Glad you enjoyed the profile. :-) Sorry I can't join you - W&M remains a very special place to me, and I feel deeply honored/grateful to have had the chance to go to school there. Please let me know if you know of any other edit-a-thons next year, and I'll see if I'd be able to make them. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:11, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hello Ser Amantio, been a while. How are things with your good self? BTW, Kailash29792 and I have listed this article about a 1959 cult classic film in Tamil cinema for peer reviewing with the intention of preparing it for FAC and subsequently taking it to FA. Non-free rationale for File:Benglis Vittorio.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Benglis Vittorio.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:49, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao. The above also applies to File:Thek - Warrior's Leg.jpg and File:De Kooning sculpture.jpg. The photographs you've taken of these artworks are technically considered WP:Derivative works which you can decide to release under a free license if you want; however, the copyright status of the original artwork needs to be taken into account. Since these three works still seemed to be considered protected by copyright and are licensed as {{Non-free 3D art}}, they need a separate specific non-free use rationale for each use per WP:NFCC#10c. You can write out the rationales yourself, or use one of the templates in Category:Non-free use rationale templates. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:20, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sir Amantio di Nicolao. Not sure where I go for this. I reverted some vandalism and apparently the user was not happy. @BoringHistoryGuy: And so I did, very much. Apologies for the delayed response - I've been out of town on Wiki stuff all day. Just got back not too long ago. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:55, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I suspected that you were busy or in the midst of an obsession (or is that just me?). I've been on a binge of starting or expanding articles on painters who won major prizes, but are now largely forgotten. This was inspired by an extraordinary painting I saw in a Philadelphia museum, by an artist I'd only vaguely heard of—The Hill Country by Walter Elmer Schofield. The local auction market for his works was very hot a decade ago – prices for Pennsylvania Impressionists skyrocketed in the 1990s because of competition among cable TV centi-millionaires – but have cooled. I may not be able to afford the artists, but I can research them. Best, BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:37, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no, it's not just you - I have my obsessions, too. Haven't edited on one of them in a while, but I'll get back around to it sooner or later. :-)
@BoringHistoryGuy: Pennsylvania Impressionism is a field I don't know well. I'm aware of it, but that's about as far as it goes. I ought to spend some time in the Pennsylvania museums one of these days. Also the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts - it's not that far away from me, really, so there's no excuse for me to miss it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:07, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to be in your neck of the woods for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, driving down Thursday morning and driving back Thursday night. My sister's going to have 8 houseguests, so she doesn't need more.
YES. Let's make a plan to meet and visit a museum together. Best, BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 23:27, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BoringHistoryGuy: It would be fun, yes - but Thanksgiving's likely out for me, too. Do you come down this way often? I owe Harrisburg a visit one of these years, but probably not until after I've used up my time off on Georgia next year. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:52, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I used to come down every couple months or so to do research, but I haven't been down since September of last year. I work from home, so my schedule's pretty flexible. Maybe something near you. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:07, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BoringHistoryGuy: Ever visit the National Museum of Women in the Arts? One of my favorites in DC. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:10, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have not. Do you want to take this discussion to email? BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 13:18, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BoringHistoryGuy: Let's do. (Sorry for the delay. Had a meeting downtown this morning...I did get to see a nice suite of Harold Weston murals on the way in and out, but didn't get a chance to try and photograph any of 'em.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:31, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article Godfrey Kututwa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Searched Google, GBooks, GNews, AllAfrica.com, and found nothing about this sculptor except profiles on commercial art sales sites. The ref given in the article is a good example of the kind of unreliable sources I found - it's a group that sells sculptures so it has a direct commercial interest in the subject and is therefore not independent. Fails WP:GNG and WP:NARTIST.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Shandukai Gundiro requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://zimsculpt.com/artist/shandukai-gundiro/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

A tag has been placed on Ambrorose Marasha requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Why was Sue Draheim removed from Category:American fiddlers?

[edit]

Sue Draheim is unquestionably American and unquestionably a fiddler. What is the reason for removing her from the Category of American Fiddlers? Thank you.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Canaan Ngandu requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. ♠PMC(talk) 08:25, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Anthony Sabuneti has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Searched Google, GBooks, GNews, AllAfrica.com, and found nothing about this sculptor except profiles on commercial art sales sites. The ref given in the article is a good example of the kind of unreliable sources I found - it's a group that sells sculptures so it has a direct commercial interest in the subject and is therefore not independent. Fails WP:GNG and WP:NARTIST. (This article is also a somewhat apparent paraphrase of the source, but not quite enough that I was comfortable G12ing it).

Hi, This is a politically contentious question that has come up before on Wikipedia. Although Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, N.I. citizens may identify themselves as British, or Irish, or both. They can also hold Irish and/or British passports. I don't know Billy Brown's politics or background, but I think it would be safer to use Northern Ireland categories only. Otherwise you assume that he identified with one or other tradition. Hope that helps. Jim Bruce (talk) 09:37, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New members of a mathematician category

[edit]

Dear Ser: From my watchlist I see that you've recently put Mollie Orshansky and John Whitefield Kendrick into the Category: Mathematicians from New York (state). Why? These were highly notable economic statisticians, whose math was fine so far as I know, but they were the kind of statisticians who classified and organized economic information. They aren't normally called mathematicians by people in their fields. I don't know that they created new math or specialized in advanced math. -- econterms (talk) 17:51, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Christmas!
Hello Ser,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 20:59, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

the main result at the moment is that this link is dead, although wayback machine links should work.

What is the correct thing to do in this instance? Thanks Werafa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Werafa (talkcontribs) 08:36, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

edit: the www.ngaiire.com url is alive again - so it appears that this is how the issue is solved. I'll edit the link to this, and please feel free to do anything else that may be required

Thurl Ravenscroft

[edit]

Greetings. With this (long ago) edit, you designated TR as a "20th Century opera singer." There's nothing to verify that which I've been able to find, including a self-described fan page and an interview. My guess is you were building on the then existing "American opera singer" category, also undocumented and inserted by a long gone numbered loose cannon. If you know better than moi, and have documentation, please correct me. Regards Tapered (talk) 06:13, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I left an explanation on the Talk page. Tapered (talk) 06:14, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

good work

[edit]

I want to thank you for the frequent cleanups, particularly over-categorization, that you have made to my pages and other pages that I watch. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year.--15:49, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

@Toploftical: You're too kind, and I too undeserving, thanks. :-) Just doing what I can to try and keep some of the category trees pruned. Happy to be of help. Happy editing, and happy new year! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:51, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ralph Northam

[edit]

Hey - just curious why you added Category:Scientists from Virginia to the Ralph Northam article. I'm guessing it's because he's a neurosurgeon, but are all neurosurgeons considered scientists? I've never heard Northam described this way. --Jpcase (talk) 16:13, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jpcase: Thanks for spotting - apparently Category:American neurosurgeons is a subcategory of Category:American neuroscientists, which would not have occurred to me. I've removed it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:43, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, It’s lovely to see your write up on Joseph Kane. He is my great uncle, and looks so much like his brother, my grandfather. Thank you. 2601:6C4:C100:7BA:4C00:CF55:431B:311C (talk) 02:39, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image update

[edit]

Hello Sir, I have attempted to update the image on Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Director Peter Navarro's page with an official image from wikimedia commons that is from his WhiteHouse.gov page, https://www.whitehouse.gov/people/peter-navarro/ ,however the image isn't uploading properly. Could you see if you can get the image to appear?

Thank you. Schofield is a painter I didn't know until this year. In one of my typical obsessions, I researched the hell out of him. Spectacular middle period. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:17, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas McEvilley Categories

[edit]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao, thank you for working on the categories on the Thomas McEvilley page I have done a little adding current publications fixing a broken link for his author page ( it still doesn't look right) but I don't know how to add a category and would very much like to have him in 20th Century American Novelist if there is such a category. art criticism was his day job but his passion was poetry and the novel Part Going, North of Yesterday and the Arimaspia. thank you and happy new year Lblackcloud (talk) 22:45, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
