DYK for Peter Coade

On 11 October 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Peter Coade, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that retired Canadian meteorologist Peter Coade was certified by The Guinness Book of World Records as having had the longest career of any weather forecaster? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Peter Coade. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Peter Coade), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

HRM pages

Hi Verne, thank you for the thanks! In my downtime this last week I did an extensive edit and organization of Halifax related pages and templates, if you have time to scan them to make sure that I didn't mis-edit anything that would be amazing. Basically every page linked off of the top 2 sections of this template, and the school board all got a cleaning. Not done for sure but started. Template:Halifax,_Nova_Scotia Happy festivus! The file File:Wilfred Le Bouthillier (Wilfred Le Bouthillier album - cover art).jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free cover art being used in a decorative manner in Wilfred Le Bouthillier#Discography. Non-free cover art is generally considered acceptable when it's used as the primary means of identification in a stand-alone article about the work in question. The use in other articles, however, typically requires a much stronger justification as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3. This particular album cover is not itself the subject of any sourced critical commentary within the relevant section so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking; moreover, using non-free album covers to illustrate single entries in a artist discography is something not allowed per WP:NFLISTS and MOS:MUSIC#Images and notation.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:18, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Highland Clearances: Social engineering: restore image lost in previous major redit

I note that you have restored an image to the article Highland Clearances. I am not sure whether this image adds anything to the article. It is essentially a picture of a glass cabinet full of gold plate. The implication is that the landlords involved in the Highland Clearances were very wealthy. Whilst some were, bankruptcy formed such a large part of the life of these landlords that I think an image that depicts wealth is misleading. Bankruptcy, either actual or potential, was a major driver of clearance - particularly of some of the more heartlessly conducted events. However, I may be missing the point on this. (I've been wrong before!!) Is there any particular reason for including this picture in the article, beyond thinking it may have accidentally been edited out? ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 08:37, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is the image of the Clearances presented by the Scottish National Museum (or it was in 2007) and it is important for that fact. I suggest that if you find it inaccurate, that the caption could be expanded to say that not all improvers were wealthy as depicted. In that case, it might be moved down the page to illustrate "landlord debt" and profligate spending.Verne Equinox (talk) 10:01, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. I zoomed in on the photograph to read the museum's explanatory text next at the side of the display case. To my mind, the text conveys a different message than the image - partly because gold plate occupies a different role in the life of wealthy people nowadays, so the image ideally needs some interpretation. (We would all understand a modern multi-millionaire pictured with an expensive supercar.) Furthermore, just seeing the wealth on it's own, without the museum's explanation of what these people did, makes one jump to conclusions about the bad aspects of wealth. If you read the text in the photo, you might agree with me.
Secondly, one of the improvers featured in the display is from Berwickshire, which is certainly not in the Highland region. It is, even to this day, a notable arable farming area - very different from the more pastoral-based agriculture of Scotland's uplands. (I have some familiarity with agriculture in Berwickshire through family links, but you could easily verify this by looking on Google Earth - there are images of newly harvested wheat and barley - and not really a lot else in the region around where Lady Grisell Baillie had her estates.) So, 50% of the photo is not relevant to the Highland Clearances. The items belonging to Sheriff Donald Macleod that are in the display consist of 14 items of cutlery and his retirement gift from the County of Ross. That is not apparent in the photograph - one needs to do a bit of digging to find this out.
I presume that the Museum of Scotland still has this exhibit on show. It would be interesting to know what the context is - i.e., what do the neighbouring displays contain? Has the display label been changed at all?
I shall do a bit more research on the matter.
ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 22:15, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As a follow up on this - I asked the museum if the exhibit pictured was still on display and what the adjoining displays were. They told me that, whilst photographs taken within the museum my be used for personal use, any other photographs must be ones taken by a museum photographer. This is because the museum do not own all the items on show and the those who have lent the items may not have given permission for photographs of them to be widely distributed. Hence, technically, this photo is, I believe, not available to use on Wikipedia. However, the museum have not made a formal complaint and I am not absolutely certain of the complexities of the copyright law here.
I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the matter.
(If I remember rightly, under UK law, a property owner may prohibit photography on and of their property - but it's a complex area with some aspects clearly not enforced (e.g. Google street view).)

It says "Data compiled from individual lists here in Wikipedia" but doesn't say what those lists are, and we are not supposed to use Wikipedia as a source. ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
