The Sims 4 is a 2014 social simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It is the fourth major title in The Sims series, and is the sequel to The Sims 3 (2009). The Sims 4 was announced on May 6, 2013, and released in September 2014 for Microsoft Windows; versions for macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One were subsequently released in 2015 and 2017. The game will go free-to-play in October 2022.

The Sims 4 focuses on its improved character creation and housebuilding tools, as well as deeper in-game simulation with the new emotion and personality systems for Sims. The Sims 4 has received many paid downloadable content packs since its release, including twelve expansion packs and twelve "game packs". The most recent expansion pack is High School Years, released on July 28, 2022. Additionally, many free updates have been released throughout the game's lifespan that include major features and additions to the game, such as the addition of swimming pools, character customization options, and terrain tools.

The game received mixed reviews upon its release, with the majority of criticism directed towards its lack of content and missing features compared to previous entries in the series.

Gameplay

The Sims 4 is a strategic social simulation video game, similar to preceding titles in the series. There is no primary objective or goal to achieve, and instead of fulfilling objectives, the player is encouraged to make choices and engage fully in an interactive environment.[1][2] The focus of the game is on the simulated lives of virtual people called "Sims", and the player is responsible for directing their actions, attending to their needs, and helping them attain their desires.[1][3] Players control their life and explore different personalities which change the way the game plays out. "Simoleon" (§) is the unit of currency used in the game.[1] Players can play with pre-existing Sims and families, or create their own in Create-a-Sim.[2][3]

Sims primarily make money by getting a job, or selling crafted items such as paintings and garden produce.[1] Sims need to develop skills for jobs and crafting items, for example, Sims in the Culinary career track need to be proficient in the Cooking skill. Players can place their Sims in pre-constructed homes or build and furnish houses in Build mode, then upload them onto an online exchange named the Gallery.[1] Optional add-ons and expansion packs expand the number of features, tools, and objects available to play with.[4]

Create-a-Sim

In The Sims 4's Create-a-Sim mode, sliders are removed in favor of direct mouse manipulation.

Create-a-Sim is the main interface for creating Sims in The Sims 4, and is significantly changed from previous The Sims games. Sliders for adjusting facial and bodily features are removed, and replaced by direct mouse manipulation.[1][5][6] By clicking, dragging, and pulling with the mouse, players may directly manipulate the facial and bodily features of a Sim, such as body parts like the abdomen, chest, legs, arms and feet.[7][2] Selections of pre-made designs of Sims are available to choose from, and range in body shape and ethnicity.[7]

Sims have seven life stages: baby, toddler, child, teenager, young adult, adult, and elder. All life stages can be created in Create-a-Sim, with the exception of the baby life stage. Toddlers were absent from the original game release, but were added via a patch in 2017.[8]

Additionally, you can create occults like aliens,[9] vampires,[10] mermaids,[11] spellcasters,[12] and werewolves.[13] Cats and dogs can be made in Create-a-Pet, which is accessed within Create-a-Sim.[14] Occults and pets can be accessed through purchasing the respective downloadable content pack they are contained in.

Each Sim has three personality traits, and an aspiration containing its own special trait.[1][2] Traits form the personality of a Sim, and significantly affect a Sim's behavior and emotions.[15][6] Aspirations are lifelong goals for Sims, Sims get a reward trait for completing an aspiration, which gives them an advantage in actions relevant to the aspiration.[16] Sims can also have likes and dislikes that determine aesthetics and activities Sims prefer.[17]

There are hairstyles, with several hair color options, for both male and female Sims. All clothing options are available across all outfits, and players are allowed up to five outfits per category. There is a filter panel where clothing options can be sorted by color, material, outfit category, fashion choice, style, content and packs.[6]

Gender options for Sims were expanded in a 2016 patch, allowing for greater freedom of gender expression. With this update, hairstyles and outfits can be worn by any Sim of any gender, and pregnancy is now possible regardless of gender.[18][19] The diversity of skin tones in the game was greatly expanded in a 2020 patch. With this update, the skin colors of Sims are set by dividing them into warm, neutral and cold tones, and the transparency and saturation of skin tones and makeup colors can be adjusted to the player's desired color.[20]

Pronoun options for Sims were added in a 2022 patch, developed in collaboration with the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD.[21] Players can choose preset pronouns, such as he/him, she/her, or they/them, or customize their own set of pronouns for their Sims, including subjective, objective, possessive dependent, possessive independent, and reflexive.[22]

A 2022 patch added the ability to select a Sim's sexuality, as well as their means of expressing attraction, either romantically or sexually.[23] The update also allows to make a Sim's sexuality flexible with changes possible later in the character's existence. An "exploring romantically" option allows the player to create a Sim that questions their sexuality and can shift it depending on the player's actions. The player can also set a Sim to have no sexual attraction, resulting in an asexual Sim.[23]

Build mode

Build mode in The Sims 4 adds several tools for resizing, moving and cloning entire rooms.

Build mode is the main interface for constructing and furnishing houses and lots in The Sims 4. Buy mode, the interface for buying house furnishings in previous games, is merged into Build mode.[24] Some locked items may be unlocked through the progression of career levels or cheats.[25]

The Sims 4 features a revamped, room-based Build mode. Entire buildings and rooms can be moved across a lot, including all objects, floor and wall coverings, doors and windows.[26] There is also a search function to search for Build mode objects.[27] There are pre-made rooms that can be placed instantly. Wall heights can be adjusted. Players can also place down fully furnished rooms in a variety of styles.[27][2][1] Swimming pools and ponds can be constructed with their respective tools.[28][29]

Walls can now have three different heights, to be set for each level of a building.[27] Windows can be moved up or down vertically along a wall. Windows can also be automatically added to rooms, then adjusted by the player as needed. Columns automatically stretch or contract to match the height of the walls on a particular level, and can be added to railings.[27] Foundations can be added to or removed from a building, and the height of the foundation can be adjusted.[27] Half walls can be built, in many height options. L- and U-shaped stairs can be constructed, as well as ladders.[30][31] Platforms can be constructed to adjust the height of a room's floor.[32]

The Gallery is an online exchange for player-generated content in The Sims 4.[33] It allows players to share Sims, families, households, rooms and buildings with other players, and allows players to download creations by other players within the game.[1] Unlike the Exchange networks in previous titles, the Gallery is fully integrated into The Sims 4, and content can be added to the Gallery directly from within the game, or downloaded and immediately used in-game.[34][1] The Gallery is also accessible through The Sims 4 website, or the now-defunct mobile app.[35] The Gallery was made available to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of The Sims 4 in 2020.[36]

In The Sims 4, a world is a collection of individual neighborhoods within a single playable map.[37] Sims can visit different worlds without having to move houses, and Sims from inactive households may occasionally be seen visiting other worlds. Most lots can be visited directly from the map, and will have a unique lot assignment. Secret lots cannot be visited from the map, and can only be accessed through interacting with neighborhood amenities, or through active careers.[38][1] Additional worlds are introduced to the game via patches, expansion packs and "game packs".[39]

Unlike The Sims 3, The Sims 4 does not have an open world feature, and travelling between lots will require a loading screen. Neighborhoods, however, allow some open world functionality by allowing Sims to explore freely within the neighborhood's boundaries. Switching between worlds also brings up a loading screen; players can jump between worlds by going into map view or by using the phone to travel.[40][1]

The Sims 4 includes three worlds in the base game: Willow Creek – a New Orleans-inspired world, Oasis Springs – a Southwestern United States-inspired world, and Newcrest – a world containing blank lots free for the player to build upon.[1][41] Additional worlds are included in expansion packs and game packs, with the added world usually being a core feature of the pack. For example, Island Living introduces a Polynesian islands-inspired world named Sulani, Jungle Adventure introduces a Latin American-inspired vacation world named Selvadorada, Get Together introduces a European-inspired world named Windenburg, and Snowy Escape introduces a mountainous Japanese-inspired world named Mt. Komorebi.[39][4]

Emotions

Emotion is a gameplay mechanic introduced in The Sims 4. It builds upon the mood system of Sims in previous titles, but is more easily affected by in-game events and social interactions with other Sims.[1][42] Positive and negative moodlets (a type of buff) influence the current emotion of a Sim. The current emotional state of a Sim is depicted in the lower left corner of the screen while playing.[1]

There are several ranges of emotions. Sims may reach one stage of an emotion, and then progress to a second, more extreme stage of the same emotion.[42] Some emotions, such as angry, embarrassed, or playful, may lead to a third stage, which is an extreme emotional stage that can lead to emotional death, if the extreme emotion is not resolved.[43][44]

Development

Development of The Sims 4 began as an online multiplayer title, under the working title of "Olympus".[45] It was planned to incorporate online multiplayer gameplay, as part of publisher Electronic Arts's (EA) plan to release more online multiplayer titles. EA labels president Frank Gibeau stated in 2012, "I have not green-lit one game to be developed as a single player experience. Today, all of our games include online applications and digital services that make them live 24/7/365."[46]

However, these plans were changed after the negative launch reception of SimCity in March 2013, also developed by Maxis, which was plagued with widespread technical and gameplay problems related to the game's mandatory network connection.[47][45] As a result, development for The Sims 4 pivoted back to a single-player title.[48][49] The switch in format occurred relatively late in development – an alternate version of the promotional site leaked in August 2013 indicated that online functions were still present,[45] and remnants of this planned online functionality remain in the game's files. An internet connection is only required during the initial installation process, for game activation with an Origin account.[50][51]

British neoclassical composer Ilan Eshkeri composed the game's orchestral soundtrack, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra.[52][53]

The Windows and macOS versions of The Sims 4 have extensive mod support, as per tradition in the main The Sims series. There are two types of mods: script mods and custom content.[54] Script mods are written in Python, typically modifying or adding gameplay mechanics.[55][56] There is also a large variety of custom content available, such as custom hairstyles, clothing, skin tones and furniture.[54] The game was upgraded from Python 3.3.5 to 3.7.0 in a 2018 patch, which broke compatibility with existing script mods. All incompatible script mods have to be updated for the patch.[57]

Marketing and release

In May 2013, Electronic Arts confirmed that The Sims 4 was in development, and would be scheduled for release in 2014.[58] The Sims 4 was officially unveiled via gameplay demos and release trailers in August 2013 at Gamescom.[59]

On May 14, 2014, producer Ryan Vaughan unveiled another Create-a-Sim trailer on YouTube. This included a preview of what pre-made Sims would look like in The Sims 4.[60] The development team unveiled another trailer on May 28, 2014, that showcased the new Build mode features.[61][62] Additional game footage and the release date were revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on June 9, 2014, and the game's North American release date of September 2, 2014, was announced.[62][63] Released alongside the standard edition, the Deluxe and Premium editions of the game include bonus gameplay objects and clothing, and a digital copy of the game soundtrack, with the Premium edition additionally including a hardcover book containing tips and artwork from the game.[64][65]

A free playable demo of the Create-a-Sim feature was made available for download on August 12, 2014.[60][66][5]

Collaborative promotions

Sims-themed gaming headset, mouse, and Plumbob USB light designed by SteelSeries were released alongside the game's launch in 2014, with the peripherals having built-in LED lights that change according to the playable Sim's mood.[67][68]

EA announced a collaboration in 2019 with Italian designer Moschino. The collaboration includes a collection of pixel art clothing inspired by the franchise, and a Moschino-themed stuff pack, titled Moschino Stuff.[69] A reality competition TV series, The Sims Spark'd, premiered on TBS on July 17, 2020, featuring twelve contestants from popular YouTube channels in The Sims community.[70] Contestants are tasked with challenges within The Sims 4 to create characters and stories following the challenge's themes and limitations.[70]

The "Sims Sessions" music festival was a limited-time event hosted from June 29, 2021 to July 7, 2021, which was accessible within a special area in the game world.[71] Singers Bebe Rexha, Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley, and Joy Oladokun recorded Simlish versions of their songs "Sabotage", "Heat Waves", and "Breathe Again", respectively, for their in-game performances during the event.[71]

Move to free-to-play

EA announced in September 2022 that The Sims 4 base game will become free-to-play on all platforms, starting from October 18, 2022.[72][73][74] Existing players, who had purchased the game previously, are entitled to a free copy of the Desert Luxe Kit DLC, which includes a variety of furniture and Build mode items.[73] This makes The Sims 4 the fourth free-to-play entry in the series, alongside currently developed free-to-play mobile titles The Sims FreePlay and The Sims Mobile.[74] The game currently has around 13,072 daily active players on Steam.[75]

Reception

The Sims 4 received mixed reviews from critics upon release. Review aggregator site Metacritic gave The Sims 4 a score of 70% based on 74 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[76]

Many reviewers criticized The Sims 4's lack of features and missing content compared to previous titles, particularly The Sims 3's Create-a-Style and open world features. Frequent loading screens and glitches were also mentioned.[85][86][80] Lee Cooper of Hardcore Gamer described The Sims 4 as a "half-hearted experience wrapped in a neat and pretty package".[81] Jim Sterling of The Escapist noted an "overall lack of engagement", and declared that "The Sims 4 is basically The Sims 3, but shrunken and sterile".[87] Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot stated, "The Sims 4's biggest problem is that The Sims 3 exists".[80] Kallie Plagge of IGN was disappointed by the lack of "cool objects" in place of missing content, concluding, "it's a good start to what may eventually be expanded into a great Sims game, but it's not there yet".[82] Nick Tan of Game Revolution describes the game as a "case study for loss aversion", noting frustration among Sims fans due to the missing features and content, concluding that the game is "woefully incomplete, despite being unexpectedly solid and entertaining in its current state."[79]

On the positive end, reviewers praised the game's new emotion and multitasking systems, visual design, revamped Build mode, and the Gallery feature. Plagge of IGN stated that she did not need micromanage Sims’ interactions with the multitasking system, and described the Build mode improvements as "universally exciting".[82] Cooper of Hardcore Gamer described the new Create-a-Sim as a "veritable hodgepodge of options", despite the lack of Create-a-Style.[81] VanOrd of GameSpot praised the visual and audio design, and the combination of the emotion and multitasking systems as a "sheer delight".[80] Tan of Game Revolution noted the "unbelievable" quality of the character animations, intuitive Create-a-Sim, and stated the Gallery feature is "swift and uncomplicated".[79] Chris Thursten of PC Gamer highlighted the new graphical style, better animations, and stated that the emotion system "changes the feel and flow of the game".[84] Alexander Sliwinski from Joystiq praised the new search function in Build mode.[83]

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, released in 2017, both received a score of 66% on Metacritic.[77][78] Both versions received additional criticism for its control layout, compared to keyboard and mouse on the PC versions of the game, as well as various bugs and technical glitches.[88][89]

Sales and revenue

The Sims 4 has 36 million players worldwide across all platforms as of 2021, and has generated over $1 billion of total revenue as of 2019.[90][91] NetBet released a survey in 2021 on video game revenue data, estimating that The Sims 4 brings in $462 million annually.[92][93]

At release, The Sims 4 was the first PC game to top the all-format video game charts in two years.[94] In 2018, EA reported that the game had 10 million players.[95] In 2020, the game had a total of 20 million players, and 10 million monthly active users.[96][97]

Controversies

Omitted features at release

Early in the development process, Maxis revealed that several gameplay elements from The Sims 3 would not be added to The Sims 4, such as the "Create-a-Style" color customization feature, basements, and town buildings such as grocery stores, schools and work locations. Maxis also revealed, through a series of tweets, that the game would ship with a "stripped-down" version of The Sims 3's "Story Progression" storytelling and world progression gameplay mechanic.[98][99] Gameplay elements previously included in past main The Sims titles, such as swimming pools and the toddler Sim life stage, and family trees were also excluded.[100][101]

Maxis cited the newly developed game engine, technologies, AI logic, and the revamped Create-a-Sim and Build/Buy modes as a reason for these omitted features, contending that it was "not possible for us to include every single feature and piece of content we added to The Sims 3 over the last five years", but clarified that they may be able to add these features back in at some point in the future.[102][101]

These announcements sparked criticism among players, who speculated that the exclusion of arguably core features were intended to be left out for paid downloadable content, or in order to make rushed deadlines.[103][102][101] Producer Graham Nardone attributed the sacrifice of "standard" gameplay features to time constraints, complexity and distribution of developers, the comparative lack of available developers to some areas of production to other areas, as well as risk factors.[104][101]

Post-release content and updates

In response to players' complaints about missing features, Maxis pledged to introduce additional content to The Sims 4 via free patches.[105] Patches regularly include content and feature additions to the game. Added content include additional cosmetic options and clothing in Create-a-Sim, and furniture and color options in Build mode.[105][106] These patches add features from past main The Sims titles excluded at launch, including swimming pools, toddler Sim life stage, family trees, basements. Other features added in patches include the Newcrest sandbox world, gender customization in Create-a-Sim, a calendar interface, gameplay scenarios, and a "Neighbourhood Stories" gameplay storytelling system.[105][107][108]

Maxis also began releasing paid downloadable content (DLC) packs for the game from 2015 onwards. Expansion packs focus on major new features, with many objects, clothes, styles, worlds and life states are geared towards the pack's major theme. "Game packs" also add new features, objects, clothes, styles, worlds and life states, similar to expansion packs, albeit at a smaller scale.[109] "Stuff packs" are minor content packs which usually only add objects and minor gameplay features. "Kits" are the smallest content packs, with each kit exclusively focusing on adding Build mode items, Create-a-Sim items, or gameplay additions.[110] Critic reviews for most expansion packs and game packs have been positive.[111]

A 64-bit version of The Sims 4 was patched into the game in 2015.[112] The 32-bit version of the game remained included alongside the 64-bit version, until the introduction of the Legacy Edition in 2019.[113] The Legacy Edition of The Sims 4 is maintained for backward compatibility purposes, for Windows computers unable to run the 64-bit version, and Mac computers that do not support the Metal graphics API. It is not compatible with content packs released after Realm of Magic, and does not receive any further content updates.[113]

Maxis revealed a rebrand to The Sims 4 in July 2019, introducing redesigned logos, branding colors, and a new game interface. All box arts for the base game, expansion packs, game packs and stuff packs were redesigned as well.[114] EA has affirmed their commitment in 2021 to long-term support for The Sims 4, for "ten years, fifteen years, or more", citing a "shift across the entire games industry to support and nurture our communities long-term".[115]

An update released in July 2022 alongside the High School Years expansion pack introduced several glitches to the game, such as Sims aging too rapidly, and the ability to have incestual relationships with other family members.[116][117] The development team acknowledged the glitches on Twitter, and were resolved in a later update.[118][119]

Star Wars: Journey to Batuu

Star Wars: Journey to Batuu, the ninth game pack for The Sims 4, was announced on August 27, 2020. The game pack announcement was received negatively by players, who felt it de-prioritized features that were still missing from the game, and indicated this pack release was part of Maxis' roadmap for the game in 2020, and that Maxis had worked on it for months.[120][121] Others presumed that it was a contractual obligation given EA's ownership of the Star Wars video game franchise.[122][123]

An independent poll, hosted before the release of the pack, asked players what themes they would like to see in future The Sims 4 content packs; Star Wars came in last out of twenty-one possible choices.[124] Executive producer Lyndsay Pearson addressed the criticism in a series of tweets on September 1, 2020, taking responsibility for approving the Star Wars pack, but clarified that Maxis simultaneously works on and listens to feedback for other themes for the game.[125][126][120]

Variety of skin tones

Since its release, The Sims 4 had been receiving complaints from players about the lack of realistic skin tones for Sims, particularly for darker-skinned Sims.[127][128] Amira Virgil, better known as Xmiramira, creates custom content for the game aimed towards darker-skinned Sims, and had been critical of the game's lack of diversity options in Create-a-Sim.[129][130] Following her appearance on the reality TV series The Sims Spark'd, her mods for additional dark skin tones for Sims received increased media attention.[129][130][131] Pearson posted a video on Twitter in August 2020, stating that the development team would fix the visual artifacts of the current skin tones and bring new skin tones into the game.[132][131]

Pearson further reiterated these sentiments in a blog post on The Sims official website in September 2020, stating that the development team was committed to expanding representation in the game.[133] Updates to skin tones for Sims were introduced in a December 2020 patch, which include adjustable sliders that modify the brightness of the skin colors, as well as significantly more skin tone presets.[134][135] Maxis consulted custom content creators, including Xmiramira, during the process of creating the update.[135] Sliders for makeup were also introduced, so makeup on Sims would better match the new skin tones.[136]

My Wedding Stories

My Wedding Stories, the eleventh game pack for The Sims 4, was announced on February 8, 2022. One day after the pack announcement, Maxis stated that they will not release the pack in Russia, citing video game laws prohibiting content promoting homosexuality as a societal norm.[137][138][139] After strong backlash and feedback from Russian players, Maxis reversed their decision and released the pack in Russia, unaltered and unchanged, citing that they "reassessed their options".[140][141] However, since March 2022, Electronic Arts has suspended all video game sales in Russia, due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.[142]

Additionally, after My Wedding Stories's February 23 release, it received criticism from players and reviewers for its numerous bugs and glitches, which render the game's headline wedding event feature unplayable.[143][144] The pack received a score of 65% on Metacritic, the lowest for a The Sims 4 game pack to date.[145] Maxis released a patch to address some of these glitches on March 31.[146][147]
