If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay, Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:38, 6 November 2011 (UTC

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Relatively quick note

I've removed my earlier comments from the relevant page, as you suggested, until I have a chance to revise them. What I am happy to concede is that there was some degree of misunderstanding on both parts, but I think there is a rationale for keeping the article which I hope I'll have time to set down this week while I'm away. If the other person involved was happy to place a note regarding primary sources on the article earlier, then in my opinion that should stand for the present even if the even if article text is not amended further. If I fell down on a point of procedure, I think people would do well to remember that when one is editing a Wikipedia page at 1am local time AND on a mobile phone with a 5" x 2½" screen, it's very easy to miss things (hence the fact that I'm constantly fixing my own typos). That said, I don't think that dismissing other editors en masse as lazy shows much respect. There are all sorts of reasons why people might think they've done a good job to begin with, and not have the time or resources (I've spent quite an amount of monry editing some pages) to fix any issues which are drawn to their attention, if indeed they're not too busy to notice this at all.

Request of Help on "Just the Facts" Tone

Hi Jim,

I am very new to Wikipedia. I got your feedback on the draft article located under PhoCoHaNoi. Thanks so much for your comments. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare some valuable time to highlight those parts from the draft that I need to pay close attentions to regarding the aspect that you raised. I know it would be a long shot to ask if you would even consider providing specific examples by directly editing them on the draft.

Lastly, I still do not know on how to submit the revision for review. I do not see any obvious buttons or pull-down menus from the Sandbox setting that would be able to allow to submit the article for review.

Thank you so much.

PhoCoHaNoi

Hello, PhoCoHaNoi. I am not going to edit the draft myself, because I want this to be a learning exercise for you. Here are a few examples of unacceptable wording:
  • "celebrating the 73-year history of outstanding men and women"
  • "pioneering contributions"
  • "sustained leadership and strategic vision"
  • "Exceptional services to innovation ecosystem"
  • "stimulating small business innovation, meeting the Air Force and DoD R&D needs, broadening participation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and boosting commercialization"
  • " So, as Dr. Pham looked back now, he brought systems-theoretic science and control engineering principles, together with teamwork and interdisciplinary to bear fruition in solving warfighter engineering problems, various areas of specific focus for increased activities in space control autonomy and space domain awareness."
It is not the job of a Wikipedia editor (you) to praise a person. Every trace of this non-neutral language must be removed. A Wikipedia article should never say "Person A is great!" Instead, it should say "Reliable source C reports that Expert B says that Person A is great", along with a reference to Reliable source C.
As for how to submit your draft, I will explain that when the draft complies with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it

Sending Messages to Other Editors

Hi Jim. I will deeply appreciate anything that you can do to help. How can I find out about other editors and send them messages? I recently looked for an article about The Italian Coffee Company that I had read years ago. However, I could not find it. I believe that this article should be available. I am a new editor and I have a big learning curve ahead of me. Maybe you can post to my talk page. I am user Mojosa17. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thoughts on this

Hey, Cullen. I see you're active at the moment, could you give me your thoughts please on Readisten? There appears to be a somewhat good-faith reason for them being here, wanting to develop text-to-speech recordings, but there's no indication that's directly in the interest of Wikipedia. I've engaged them on their talk page but illicited no response yet. I'm finding it a little hard to gauge the next move. Obviously WP:UAA came to mind but i don't think a block is immediately warranted, but as i said i'm not entirely sure. Zindor (talk)

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

January songs
happy new year

Today's featured article is Osbert Parsley, not by me but Amitchell125 where I commented, including the beginning of my songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:22, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Gerda Arendt, for just another of your friendly, supportive messages. Perhaps someday you will post something about my favorite musicians Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Have a great 2023. Cullen328 (talk) 06:17, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll see ;) - I usually come with my latest news, which is RD more and more. Pointing at Parsley was a bit pointy as you may have noticed. Today I have two artists on DYK, one Russian, one Ukrainian, who recently died. More on my talk in case of interest (in why I'm taking a break from DYK). If you check the songs, you see that I'm on vacation, taking a break in real life as well. As it happens, today is your anniversary of quite a history:

Precious anniversary

Precious
Nine years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk)

Thanks so much, Gerda Arendt. If you do not want to post anything about Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin, perhaps you will consider the incomparable Jim Morrison of that era, or the slightly newer and still living artists like Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. Perhaps you can immerse yourself in the Velvet Underground or The Clash for a while. You will then be able to better appreciate the brilliant artistry of the Talking Heads. Cullen328 (talk) 09:03, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am just this ordinary bloke, researching, and Reading Heraldry and Law since 1982. I have used my User and Talk pages as scrap books since I began editing Wikipedia. Your User / Talk pages are enviably pristine, kudos.

Thus, may I introduce myself?

Hi Jim, first of all we have a lot in common, I am 70, and got my Ba (Computer programming, Philosophy and Religion, Theatre and Film Arts), in 1982 in my 2 US scholarships. I have one of my many designs registered in your Library of Congress! After returning, I designed systems on the Stenna Seaspread, for your navy, and MoD. After this, following my father’s death, [[John Brooke-Little]] from the [[College of Arms]] wrote, asking me to bring to him, my family Birth & Marriage certificates.

Presently, I have been writing Heraldry articles in Wikipedia since 16 April 2008‎.

Royal standards of England. (WikiProject England – High-importance).

Royal supporters of England. (WikiProject England – High-importance).

List of German monarchs in 1918. (WikiProject Germany – Mid-importance).

Abdication of Wilhelm II. (WikiProject Germany – High-importance).

Former German nobility in the Nazi Party. (uploaded my 155,672 Bytes, in one hit!).

List of Popes. (found, translated, uploaded +90 coats of arms; C13th to C21st ).

Having introduced myself, may I use this opportunity to Debate the reasoning of this article, and it’s, as yet unstated importance. If after this Debate, you still oppose my reasoning, I will also vote for its Deletion. Thank you for your considerations. Steve. Stephen2nd (talk) 04:11, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Stephen2nd. My talk page is not the proper place to debate whether or not to keep this article. The appropriate place for that is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Third Reich NSDAP cabinet 1925 where I believe that I have explained my recommendation. I'm glad that you studied in the United States but not sure what that has to do with anything here on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 05:29, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from NET SET Bengali (09:07, 3 February 2023)

Can I discuss the Bengali language in my own way? --NET SET Bengali (talk) 09:07, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, NET SET Bengali. Wikipedia is not a place to discuss anything in my own way. This is a neutrally written encyclopedia, not a forum to discuss various things. You can do that on Facebook and Twitter and YouTube and Instagram and LinkedIn and countless other social media platforms. But not on Wikipedia. If you have specific, actionable ideas to improve the article, propose them, citing reliable sources, at Talk: Bengali language. Cullen328 (talk) 09:31, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your reversion was undone--some of the disputed content was unsourced negative, some unsourced promotional (Let's not restore junk edits like Caption = The clinic building where patients interacted and would sometimes have sexual relations with each other or team members). Burning of Smyrna

Thank you for your comment on my appeal for a new moderator or, if not possible, my question regarding the closing process and expected closing date for the Dispute I filed against a number of editors. I am sorry that you thought the questions I asked of the would be moderator were not appropriate. However, note that I did read the page the moderator asked us to read and there was no indication there that we were not supposed to ask the moderator any questions. The moderator could have dispelled any doubts in a few words but chose not to, which is their prerogative, and I did write I have no hard feelings. I am a new editor, especially compared to you, but I am trying to adhere by Wikipedia guidelines, which, incidentally, also say not to bite new editors. So, while I am comfortable in the fact that your comment is only a POV, I feel that the words you used were a bit unfair. If you really would like to see unpleasantness, please read through the Dispute. In any case, I am still waiting for answers to my questions. 70.164.212.36 (talk) 06:41, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello unregistered IP user. You are obviously a highly intelligent person so I will dispense with the normal niceties extended to confused new editors. Your pattern of editing shows all the indications of sophisticated POV pushing and axe grinding that frequently results in indefinite blocks for registered accounts. I have been evaluating the contributions of editors like you for 13 years. There is nothing new about your pattern of behavior although you are wordier than most, which irritates people more than persuading them. Your exceptionally lengthy TLDR excursions about "propaganda" that most editors will not read in full but I actually read are powerful evidence that you are here to grind an axe and push a pro-Turkish point of view, and that you think that any negative content about Turkey is "propaganda" and anything positive about Turkey is wonderful content. I hesitated stating the above assessment because of the genuine catastrophe that befell Turkey and Syria a few days ago, but the truth needs to be told. My heart sincerely goes out to all of the victims and their families and loved ones in Turkey and Syria, but the fact of the matter is that experienced editors and administrators are highly skilled at detecting people who are here to push a non-neutral point of view. And at this point in time, you are flying many red flags indicating unacceptable behavior high and proudly. That conduct does not bode well for your long-term editing career, but perhaps you do not care all that much. On the other hand, you could choose to begin editing neutrally, but I remain pessimistic of that outcome. Please feel free to prove me wrong. I would love to be proven wrong and to gain a neutral productive editor Cullen328 (talk) 07:42, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Jim, come and join me on this editor's "Enemies List". There are a lot of us there. It doesn't take much to get on the list, just not being supportive and noticing those red flags is enough. Liz Read! Talk! 23:59, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Replying for Burning of Smyrna

@Cullen328: Your remarks of me "POV pushing and axe grinding" are highly inappropriate as they indicate that you have not read my edits or that you do not really care what is in the edits, for some reason of your own. Are you sure you are not confusing my edits with the endless anti-Turkish propaganda in the article? Show me one single POV and one single axe grinding in my edits, and I will show you ten that were in the article before I edited a single word and still remain now, nay I will show you twenty. Also, I wanted to discuss everything in the article Talk page, but got no response because the other editors could not defend their positions. What happened to all the Wikipedia niceties? Please go and examine my edits, then see if you can make the same claims. @Liz: You choose not to reply to my questions after you have accused me of sockpuppeting and disruption. I could just as well accuse you of taking sides, and perhaps knowingly, because of your baseless accusations, and your hard to believe claim that you do not recall how you happened on the article. Perhaps you have remembered by now. I could not find a Reply button on the original topic, so that is why we are here. 70.164.212.36 (talk) 02:16, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am not interested in engaging further with you except in exercising my powers as an administrator. In my judgment, you are behaving like a tendentious ethnic nationalist POV pusher. I am sure that you are convinced of your own righteousness and that your ethnic rivals are wicked. I am not interested in debating with you. My interest is in protecting the encyclopedia from POV pushers. Please do not post on my talk page again unless it is to make a required notification. Cullen328 (talk) 03:00, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cullen, I believe this is a sock. Compare User talk:BenjaminStaff (blocked) [1], [2] with [3] and the geolocation of 184.179.106.251 and this IP (both from Burning of Smyrna [4]) See discussion at [5].
I can't see the check user block info on BenjaminStaff, but if someone can check the geolocation from that account with the two public IPs I think it would match. @Materialscientist: @Liz: may have more information about this.
Greetings from Los Angeles,  // Timothy :: talk  03:21, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, TimothyBlue. I have never claimed to be a sockpuppet detective and I am definitely not a checkuser so I will leave this matter to those who have those skills and tools. I do appreciate your observations, though. Thanks. Cullen328 (talk) 03:54, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Materialscientist did not take any action which is not a surprise with an IP account which they will not associate with a registered account. Years ago, I used to get frustrated by the opaqueness of the work of checkusers but I then accepted that they are very experienced at their job and follow the rules strictly. They know what they are doing and have access to information that we don't have. But I wanted to bring up the association to him to see what he thought. Making that inquiry is what put me on 70.164.212.36's Enemies List. But having filled in the details right now, I think Jim probably wants this discussion to move along and have us all get back to work. Liz Read! Talk! 04:23, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Liz, I do not mind being updated about any problematic behavior by this editor. But I am not interested in writing point-by-point refutations of their TLDR ramblings about propaganda which are clearly intended to push a nationalist agenda. I have far better things to do, such as pouring shots of whiskey for my wife and I, and folding the laundry. Cullen328 (talk) 04:32, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Facts are facts, even when millions of Americans are fervently devoted to denying the facts and worshipping a false god. I admit that I am a Democrat but I have enormous respect for the many (but not enough) honorable Republicans who have chosen to reject Trumpism, even at the cost of losing their jobs and their friendships and their reputations in "conservative" circles who have gone far right in the Trump era. I know who they are, at least the most prominent of them, and I consider them to be great patriots. Thanks for stopping by. Cullen328 (talk) 03:03, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Joshowen17 (04:14, 12 February 2023)

How do I make a page about myself --Joshowen17 (talk) 04:14, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The first step is to explain in detail why you think that you are a notable person according to Wikipedia's standards. Only a tiny percentage of human beings are notable. Cullen328 (talk) 05:22, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Khristi Wilson on Ramesh Bais (09:48, 12 February 2023)

Hello, I want to add Deputy Chief Minister's name. How do I do that? --Khristi Wilson (talk) 09:48, at 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Khristi Wilson. I do not see why it would be appropriate to add a lower level official's name to that article. You can discuss it at Talk: Ramesh Bais. Cullen328 (talk) 16:37, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Cullen328 for the reply. I won't add the name, but in case if I had to, how to do it? Do I have to add nametag and datatag? If yes, how to add that? Or is there some other way in which I could do that? Khristi Wilson (talk) 22:53, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Khristi Wilson, a Wikilink and a reference to a reliable source would be the most common method. Cullen328 (talk) 01:17, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
