Hi Qwerfjkl, would you be interested in the following task?

On pages in namespace, without a talk page, or if the talk page does not contain any project banners, place the template {{WPBS}}. It might also be good to include the blank class parameter, i.e. {{WPBS|class=}} to encourage editors to assess the article.

There was some discussion and a Quarry query at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council#Articles without Wikiprojects which might be helpful.

Did you manage to contact Enterprisey about that other task yet?

@MSGJ, yes, certainly I'd be interested. Do you think it would be worth adding {{WikiProject unassigned}}? I could also look at using mw:ORES/Articletopic to automatically assign WikiProjects (probably noting that they have been added by a bot if so). At WP:BOTR there was some talk recently about using ORES to tags stubs, so I could check if the articles come up as stubs and assign them that class if so. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:58, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! You could ask around and see what people think, but my opinion is "no". We now allow people to assess an article without assigning a wikiproject, so there is no longer something amiss if an article has no wikiproject. That is also a huge bloat of a template which just seems unnecessary. Good idea to automatically assess stubs, in which case we should maybe support the |auto= parameter in WPBS to indicate that it has been bot-assessed (I will start a discussion on that). Final request: if the article is a biography, then a blank |listas= might encourage people to fill it in. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:39, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't know anything about ORES, but tagging with relevant WikiProjects seems like a good idea if it can be done reliably. @Martin, here is my preliminary test with ORES using random articles. Looks like it's not accurate enough for our purposes, may vary in accuracy for different topics. User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/ORES test. It looks better when I restrict it to when it has a greater than 90% probability (User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/ORES test/2). I think I can use that as a start. This looks great! I think generally we start each project on a new line, i.e.

I had a look at your 90%-restriction set. List of European Athletics Indoor Championships medalists (women) is not really a biography (though that wouldn't inherently prevent WikiProject Biography from caring about it – I don't know if they follow lists), but if you wanted to exclude similar pages, then skipping anything that begins "List of..." would probably work. Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists could likely be added to any article with such a title. It'd probably pick up the occasional book, but this is unlikely to happen very often.
There were six others marked as biographies but inaccurate. All of them are bios. Were these getting incorrectly skipped? (Missing some doesn't feel like a big problem to me.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:49, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comment/question: Probably nothing you can do about this, but I'll explain how it happened anyways: User was rapidly vandalising the page and multiple times as I was about to revert it they added another one, in the end I still ended up reverting with one of their edits in between - and that was enough for there to not be any undo tag apparently (not even manual revert).

Personally I haven't had this happen many times with me, even though it's not super uncommon for there to be multiple users vandalising a page, but having multiple vandals or one rapid vandal editing different parts of a page rapidly is pretty rare.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Recent changes

  • The RealMe extension allows you to mark URLs on your user page as verified for Mastodon and similar software.
  • Citation and footnote editing can now be started from the reference list when using the visual editor. This feature request was voted #2 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [1]
  • Previously, clicking on someone else's link to Recent Changes with filters applied within the URL could unintentionally change your preference for "Group results by page". This has now been fixed. [2]

Problems

  • For a few days last week, some tools and bots returned outdated information due to database replication problems, and may have been down entirely while it was being fixed. These issues have now been fixed. [3]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 June. It will be on all wikis from 8 June (calendar).
  • Bots will no longer be prevented from making edits because of URLs that match the spam blacklist. [4]

All Wikipedians in good standing are eligible and self-nominations are welcomed; it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself!

Blitz: Of the 17 editors who signed up for our April Copy Editing Blitz, nine editors completed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 24 articles totaling 53,393 words. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: 51 editors signed up for the month-long May Backlog Elimination Drive, and 31 copy-edited at least one article. 180 articles were copy-edited. Barnstars awarded are posted here.

    • Client wikis: We drastically reduced the size of a ResourceLoader module that’s loaded on most Wikipedia page views (phab:334682)
    • Language code: With awesome help from Nikki, we improved documentation for how to add language codes to Wikibase/Wikidata (phab:T335857)
    • EntitySchemas: We are getting the new datatype ready for testing.

Recent changes

  • The content attribution tools Who Wrote That?, XTools Authorship, and XTools Blame now support the Dutch, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Polish and Portuguese Wikipedias. This was the #7 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [6]
  • The Search Preview panel has been deployed on four Wikipedias (Catalan, Dutch, Hungarian and Norwegian). The panel will show an image related to the article (if existing), the top sections of the article, related images (coming from MediaSearch on Commons), and eventually the sister projects associated with the article.   • The RealMe extension now allows administrators to verify URLs for any page, for Mastodon and similar software. [8]
  • The default project license has been officially upgraded to CC BY-SA 4.0. The software interface messages have been updated. Communities should feel free to start updating any mentions of the old CC BY-SA 3.0 licensing within policies and related documentation pages. [9]

Problems

  • For three days last month, some Wikipedia pages edited with VisualEditor or DiscussionTools had an unintended __TOC__ (or its localized form) added during an edit. There is a listing of affected pages sorted by wiki, that may still need to be fixed. [10]
  • Currently, the "Sort this page by default as" feature in VisualEditor is broken. Existing {{DEFAULTSORT:...}} keywords incorrectly appear as missing templates in VisualEditor. Developers are exploring how to fix this. In the meantime, those wishing to edit the default sortkey of a page are advised to switch to source editing. [11]
  • Last week, an update to the delete form may have broken some gadgets or user scripts. If you need to manipulate (empty) the reason field, replace #wpReason with #wpReason > input. See an example fix. [12]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 June. It will be on all wikis from 15 June (calendar).
  • VisualEditor will be switched to a new backend on English Wikipedia on Monday, and all other large wikis on Thursday. The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here. Future changes

  • From 5 June to 17 July, the Foundation's Security team is holding a consultation with contributors regarding a draft policy to govern the use of third-party resources in volunteer-developed gadgets and scripts. Feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome at Third-party resources policy on meta-wiki.

That's right, but "Worcester Warriors – Official website of Worcester Warriors Rugby Club" is the description of the website/publisher, not the title of the news article that ought to be on the page. For simplicity, I've replaced it with [http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php Worcester Warriors Rugby Club] which is far from satisfactory but at least gets over the problem. The bot should notify an editor who removes a |title= parameter (which will generate a CS1 error). I'm presuming the bot would NOT notify an editor who replaces {{cite web}} with a simple external link as Emeraude suggested (which will not generate a CS1 error). Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Is there an easy way of retrieving the creator of a category? Eg if one nominates a single category for cfd using Twinkle, Twinkle gets the first editor somehow and notifies them, but I am not aware of any method to notify all category creators in a bulk nom. — Oculi (talk) 16:01, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, whilst I can see some code which is sorting contributors by date and plucking out the first one (and also just sending 1 notification to the creator of several pages), I have no idea how I can utilise this. What I would like is a template or magic word which would add the creator to a table like the one at User:Oculi/sandbox9. The page count is supplied by the magic word PAGESINCATEGORY and I would like something similar to add the creator, who could be pinged rather than notified via talk page. Well, I can get the page count using {{clc}} or by a magic word so I would like a similar method to get the page creator. Eg if I have 100 categories in my table I want the 100 page creators to be listed in a trice. Templates are a mystery to me. Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 June. It will be on all wikis from 29 June (calendar).
  • The Minerva skin now applies more predefined styles to the .mbox-text CSS class. This enables support for mbox templates that use divs instead of tables. Please make sure that the new styles won't affect other templates in your wiki. [21][22]
  • Gadgets will now load on both desktop and mobile by default. Previously, gadgets loaded only on desktop by default. Changing this default using the |targets= parameter is also deprecated and should not be used. You should make gadgets work on mobile or disable them based on the skin (with the |skins= parameter in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition) rather than whether the user uses the mobile or the desktop website. Popular gadgets that create errors on mobile will be disabled by developers on the Minerva skin as a temporary solution. [23]
  • All namespace tabs now have the same browser access key by default. Previously, custom and extension-defined namespaces would have to have their access keys set manually on-wiki, but that is no longer necessary. [24]
  • The review form of the Flagged Revisions extension now uses the standardized user interface components. [25]

@Jc37, that there is significant coverage of this ward doesn't matter; the arguments for deletion were WP:OCAWARD / WP:DEFINING, i.e. the category has to be defining for those who receive it. As RevelationDirect said, The Kennedy Center galas are lifetime achievement awards who recognized people who are already prominent and typically already have some of the few awards that are defining like Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys. (their emphasis). As for WP:OSE, I don't believe the nominator was actually arguing deletion because of OSE; it had just been brought up in an earlier nomination.

Well, whether it was your intention or not, your close really does come across as a "supervote". And I don't say that lightly. I support the idea of a closer's discretion in closing. But if you've formed an opinion, you probably should not beclosing the discussion. Is there any policy-based rationale for your closure comments?
Additionally, just because someone may have won other awards, doesn't make this award any less defining. Something can be WP:DEFINING for an individual at any stage of their life or career. See also Category:Lifetime achievement awards.
We seem to have somewhat have waived WP:BADNAC #4 at CfD, apparently due to needing more closers, but this would seem to fall afoul of #2 as well.

Regarding BADNAC #2, unfortunately there is a very severe shortage of closers at CfD. If I don't close these discussions, they will likely remain unclosed for months. And then I questioned that applicability. No one "addresed" what I said, as you asserted above. You (presumably) weighed the arguments and made a determination. My concern here is that no actual "consensus" had been determined in the discussion. For the very reasons I point out here.

Category:Kennedy Center honorees

I would request that you re-open this discussion. I strongly disagree with the outcome. The Kennedy Center honor is the most prestigious award in the arts (more than an Oscar, Emmy Tony, Grammy, Pulitzer, etc.) in the United States. It is absolutely career defining, and the deletion of the category is highly inappropriate. I strongly contest deletion and given that the the cat discussion had such low participation and was divided it should not have been closed with a delete consensus anyway.4meter4 (talk) 13:54, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It does, and I have closed many low partticipation discussions at CfD myself. But we should be very careful there. When dealing with low participation discussions, we have to be even more careful about determining whether there is consensus to delete, not less.
