The Amazing Race 11 (titled The Amazing Race: All-Stars) is the eleventh installment of the popular four time Emmy Award winner reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 11 featured eleven teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.

The Amazing Race hired challenge producer Alan Bishop to design new tasks and challenges for this season. Bishop was responsible for challenges in recent installments of Survivor (Vanuatu, Guatemala, Panama).[1]

The Amazing Race joins fellow CBS reality competitions Survivor and Big Brother with all-star editions. An advertisement following the finale of Season 10 on December 10, 2006 confirms an earlier story from Variety (based on information from a CBS spokesperson on November 21, 2006) that this edition will feature 11 teams from previous seasons in an all-star format.[2][3] In a TV Guide interview, host Phil Keoghan stated that that the production team's goal for the race "wasn't to pick the best racers," but "to pick the teams that have earned the most attention over the last 10 seasons".[4]

Prior to news of the 11th race being an All-Star race, applications were due on June 2, 2006. Final casting interviews were scheduled for August 2006, yet no confirmation had been made as of mid September 2006 as to whether the final casting interviews took place. On September 28, 2006 CBS gave the go-ahead to an 11th season of the series.[5]

The season premiered on February 18, 2007 at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 CST for one hour, [6] and the season finale was on May 6, 2007.[7]

Template:FnbDustin & Kandice arrived 4th, but they had missed the clue to the Detour, having simply arrived by chance at one of the options. They had to go back and get the clue before checking in, but it did not affect their placing.
Template:FnbUchenna & Joyce arrived 3rd, and were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being marked for elimination and not arriving 1st. It did not affect their placing.
Template:FnbJoe & Bill arrived 5th, and were assessed a 30 minute penalty for being marked for elimination and not arriving 1st. Eric & Danielle checked in shortly after the penalty started, and Joe & Bill were eliminated.
Template:FnbThe Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
Template:FnbJoyce confirmed in a post-race interview that she had done the newspaper recycling Roadblock prior to being eliminated[8]. Her performance is not included in this tally, however.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Purple means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination", meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colors of + symbols indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection route marker.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it; <> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

Notable Events in The Amazing Race 11

Records and similar items specifically related to teams having appeared twice on the show ("career records") are not considered in these lists.

General

  • Eric & Danielle (Season 9) are the only all-stars who did not previously race together as a team on their season, though they did race against each other's respective teams; they met during the race and later started dating.
  • Colin Guinn & Christie Lee Woods were expected to be in the All-Star edition,[9] but could not participate because Christie became pregnant.
  • Phil Keoghan was asked to submit a list of 15 teams that he thought should return. Ten of them were chosen. The one he didn't choose was Eric & Danielle. He said, "I didn't think of that new combination, which actually is a really good one."[10]

Pre-Race

  • Joe & Bill had to pull out of the Return of the Racers blog and a weekly live show TV session on BuddyTV during The Amazing Race 10 to participate in this season.
  • In an online interview at CBS.com, Jill cited Wikipedia as one of the sources she and John Vito used to read up on former races and racers before embarking on this Race.
  • Dustin & Kandice were not available for media interviews, including The Early Show and Finish Line, after their elimination from Season 10 due to their participation in this season. David & Mary, also from Season 10, were able to participate in media interviews as their elimination did not interfere with the taping of this season.

In-Race

  • Chip Arndt, the winner of Season 4, ran into racers Charla & Mirna and Teri & Ian on Leg 1 at Miami International Airport.[11] Chip was given permission to report his sightings but to not give any specific names on CBS's Return of the Racers blog.
  • In Leg 1, Mary wore a shirt saying "Missing" in reference to their allies The Cho Brothers (Erwin & Godwin) from Season 10. Later on, in Leg 2, David wore a shirt saying "Lost" with a picture of Phil on it; these same shirts had also been worn by Erwin & Godwin.
  • The website for the show mentions that in Leg 3, two teams (Uchenna & Joyce and Rob & Amber) attempted the 40-foot climb part of the Detour and switched tasks, the switch isn't aired in the episode.
  • In Leg 6, for the first time since its introduction, there was no "location indicator" at the pit stop due to the fact that the pit stop location had to be changed mid-leg.[12]
  • While no Roadblock was shown in Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Joe & Bill's hands in a clip near the middle of the extended episode. This Roadblock involved rowing a rowboat on a reflecting pond outside the palace. It was likely edited out because it did not affect the final placement of teams. Danny checking in with a life-jacket on also proves this point. [13] In Leg 12, Eric mentioned that he had used up all his Roadblocks (6 aired) at this point which means the 6 Roadblock rule is in effect; it can be concluded that of the final 3 teams at the end of this leg, Kandice, Danielle, and Mirna performed this unaired Roadblock from Leg 7.
  • At the end of Leg 8, Oswald & Danny and Uchenna & Joyce, as a result of an Intersection and Fast Forward, checked in together, even though ties were abolished after Season 4. They both arrived first, but were told that only one prize would be awarded, and that the teams would have to decide which team got the prize. Oswald & Danny gave it to Uchenna & Joyce, so Uchenna & Joyce won the leg. In seasons up through Season 4, all tied first place teams received a prize; in all subsequent seasons, ties were forbidden and teams arriving at the same time would be split by one minute intervals.
  • On Leg 9, having fallen so far behind the other teams and it being an elimination leg, Uchenna & Joyce appeared to be directed to the Pit Stop from their first Route Marker in Malaysia; thus they were shown skipping the Detour and Roadblock. However, according to Uchenna, they had performed all the tasks, but none were aired.[14]
  • The roadblock in Leg 11, a jump from Macau Tower's observation deck, is billed as the highest skyjump in the world (233 meters). According to Phil Keoghan, this was the highest jump in The Amazing Race history.
  • It was revealed by Mirna that there was an unaired Roadblock in Leg 13 in Hawaii that involved free fall cliff jumping into the ocean.[15][16]

Post-Race

  • CBS announced on February 15, 2007 that eliminated contestants had been videotaped living together in a common house in their sequester location in Acapulco, Mexico with the results edited into a 13-episode series entitled Elimination Station. The series, viewable only in the United States, will be made available on the InnerTube video streaming service on the CBS website, with a new episode debuting immediately following the airing of each new Amazing Race episode in the Pacific time zone this season.[17]
  • Eric & Danielle said in their interview on "The Finish Line" on CBS.com that they are no longer dating due to the fact they live too far apart, and are now just friends.

Prizes

Unless otherwise noted, prizes were awarded to the first team to check in for each leg.

  • Leg 1 - A trip to the Four Seasons Resort, Whistler Lodge in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada provided by Travelocity.
  • Leg 2 - An off-road motorcycle for each member.
  • Leg 3 - A home gym for each member.

  • Leg 13 - $1,000,000

Elimination Station

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific time zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.

  • After Leg 1, John Vito & Jill were eliminated, being sent to the villa first. While there, they were guessing who would be eliminated next. They thought it would either be Charla & Mirna or Kevin & Drew.
  • After Leg 2, Kevin & Drew came to the villa next. While there, Kevin, Drew, and John Vito were arguing over what a stoop was. Later, they guessed Charla & Mirna would be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 3, David & Mary became the third team to arrive at the villa. David recounted how he was misdirected by several Chilean locals over breakfast. Later, Jill shows David & Mary the master suite they saved for the first married couple. Later, Drew guessed Teri & Ian might be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 4, Rob & Amber became the fourth team to arrive at the villa. Rob and Amber were welcomed very nicely. John Vito and Jill even said they were a strong team. Later, they guessed that the next elimination would be Eric & Danielle.
  • After Leg 5, the four eliminated teams sat around waiting for another team, only to hear John Vito and Kevin figure out that it must be a non-elimination leg. They spent time on a beach overlook, and back at the villa, Rob dragged Mary into the pool.
  • After Leg 6, Teri & Ian became the fifth team to arrive at the villa, where Drew put on a displeased face for the camera. A disgruntled Ian revealed that he believes Oswald & Danny are ruthless racers with no character, saying that when he worked with them in Ushuaia to book flights, they deliberately booked him a different flight and did not confirm it. He said that the same thing happened when Eric & Danielle worked with Oswald and Danny. He also predicted that either Dustin & Kandice or Uchenna & Joyce would win.
  • After Leg 7, John Vito and Jill ponder about this non-elimination round. Ian expresses how he and Teri bonded with Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle as a result of their spending consecutive days together in airports. Amber does tattoos for entertainment.
  • After Leg 8, the five eliminated teams get a call from the sixth eliminated team Joe & Bill. The eliminated teams are sad to hear that Joe & Bill were eliminated from the race. Mary asks Joe & Bill who they think should win. Bill says that he would love to see Uchenna & Joyce or Charla & Mirna win. The guests talk about the call the next morning. In a confessional, Kevin and Drew said that since they were so close to the finish line, they would see Joe & Bill where the Race finishes.[18]
  • After Leg 9, Uchenna & Joyce called the villa and told the eliminated teams about their flight problem that led to their elimination. The teams at the villa expressed disappointment at Uchenna & Joyce's elimination, and Amber tells them they would meet up at the finish line. Prior to the call, Drew questions why Dustin & Kandice need to participate in the Race when they had already won beauty pageants. Amber takes exception to this, having won Survivor: All-Stars prior to her original season of The Amazing Race.
  • After Leg 10, the eliminated teams waited for another team, only to discover that the leg was non-elimination. Amber taught Mary how to swim. Mary overcome the fear of not being able to swim for a long time.
  • After Leg 11, the eliminated teams await a phone call from the next eliminated team, but give up after several days without a phone call. John Vito came up with the idea of throwing an awards party to commemmorate the end of their stay at the villa. Each racer drew another racer's name and presented him or her with funny and sometimes touching gifts.
  • After Leg 12, the five teams at the villa depart for the unspecified end city in order to cheer the remaining teams as they run to the finish line. At the end city, they reunite with Joe & Bill, Uchenna & Joyce, and newly eliminated Oswald and Danny. Oswald and Danny say they would like to see Charla & Mirna win the race, while some of the other teams reiterate who they would like to see win.
  • After Leg 13, the final leg of the The Amazing Race: All-Stars, some of the eliminated teams share their opinions on the winners and the runners-up. The final three admit to their final joys and disappointments.

Race locations

Final Route Map

Leg 1 (United States → Ecuador)

In the first Detour of the race, teams had to chose between Wrangle It and Recover It. In Wrangle It, teams had to help local cowboys lasso, tie down, and groom one wild horse whose hooves grow so long that they prevent them from walking properly. Team members had to use traditional tools to clip its hooves to a safe length and to trim its mane and tail. In Recover It, one team member had to put on an historical military uniform. Then, the team must search the field for three items missing from the uniform: an epaulette, a button and a sword.

Leg 2 (Ecuador → Chile)

The Roadblock for this leg was to to enter the ground floor boardroom and search the boardroom for letters of the alphabet that were on display. Teams needed to figure out that the majority of the letters when unscrambled would spell out one of the ten destinations inscribed on the plaques hanging on the wall. When they think they solved the puzzle, they had to show their answer to the security guard who would hand them their next clue if they were correct. The Detour was By Hand or By Machine. In By Hand, teams had to choose a two-ton tire and, by properly aligning the bolts and washers, finish securing it to a dump truck. In By Machine, each team member had to take a turn driving a huge front loader to transfer enough gravel to cover a marked yellow line on a stick.

Leg 3 (Chile)

For the Roadblock on this leg of the race, one team member had to choose an 1800-gallon fish-breeding tank, jump in, and catch and transfer all 80 flounder from the breeding tank to a holding tank at the other end of the farm. Once finished, their clue would be revealed at the bottom of the tank. The Detour was a choice between Vertical Limit or River Wild. In Vertical Limit, teams had to walk 200 yards to a cliff where both team members needed to complete a 40-foot rock climb. Each team member would grab one half of their clue at the top of the climb. In River Wild, teams had to backtrack two miles to the banks of Rio Petrohué where they would complete a two and a half mile white water rafting course through level 3 and 4 rapids.

Leg 4 (Chile → Argentina)

Teams chose between Navigate It and Sign It for this leg's Detour. In Navigate It, teams had to use a map of Punta Arenas to get to the town plaza where a sailor would hand them a compass. Then, using the compass, the teams needed to walk directly south to find the Nautilus Building, a deep-sea salvage business. In Sign It, teams had to choose a pole and building supplies and carry them up a flight of stairs to Magellan's Map. Using the map as a reference, teams needed to figure out his journey around the world began and ended in Seville. Then, they had to build a traditional local signpost listing in order the fourteen ports of call in his voyage. While the signs didn't have to point in the right direction, all the cities had to be spelled correctly. The Roadblock on this leg was to sort through 1,600 pieces of mail and find one of two messages addressed to their team, written by one of the other teams from their season. The team member then had to read the message inside it to their partner, after which they received their next clue.

Leg 5 (Argentina → Mozambique)

For the Roadblock, one team member had to use a rat to find a race marker above a deactivated mine. Once their rat gave the signal that it found something, an Apopo Mine Technician would search the area. When the Race marker was found, the team would receive their next clue. This leg's Detour was Pamper or Porter. In Pamper, teams had to travel half a mile to the Maputo Central Market, choose a nail polish kit, and convince people to pay them to paint their nails, which in Maputo is a job usually performed by men. Teams needed to earn at least 30 meticals, which is about one U.S. dollar, to receive their next clue. In Porter, teams made their way two miles to Market de Janet where they would use their bare hands to fill 10 large 45-pound bags with coal and sew each of them shut. Then, teams had to carry one of the ten heavy bags to a specified address where the owner would hand them their next clue.

Leg 6 (Mozambique → Tanzania)

The Detour for this leg was Solve It or Schlep It. In Solve It, teams had to make their way one third of a mile to the Beyt al Chai hotel where they would put together a 62-piece puzzle that recreates an image from a style of local artwork known as Tinga Tinga. In Schlep It, teams made their way one mile to the Kijangwani Lumber Yard. Once there, they had to choose a local handcart and load two 50-pound logs into their cart. Once loaded, teams had to travel more than a mile to deliver the logs to a shipyard. This leg's Roadblock had one team member learn how to use a traditional wooden weapon called a rungu used by members of the Maasai people by throwing it 65 feet to destroy clay targets in order to retrieve their next clue from inside.

Leg 7 (Tanzania → Poland)

The Detour was Perfect Pitch or Perfect Angle. In Perfect Pitch, teams had to make their way three-quarters of a mile to the Prymas Palace and choose a grand piano. Then, they needed to use the provided tools to tune one key of the keyboard. Once the concert pianist played a piece of Chopin's music and determined that their piano was in tune, he would hand them their next clue. In Perfect Angle, teams made their way approximately half a mile to the Escada Boutique to pick up a mannequin and carry it another 400 yards to the Panoramik Laboratory. Once there, teams had to use an x-ray machine to locate a clue embedded somewhere inside their mannequin which needed to be positioned at a very specific angle for the image to capture the name of their next destination and commemorate Marie Curie. The unaired Roadblock required teams to row a boat out onto the reflecting pool in front of the palace. The objective is unknown.

Leg 8 (Poland)

At the Intersection, teams had to join with one other team to complete tasks and make decisions together until further notice, including completing the Fast Forward. The Fast Forward was to have each team climb a set of stairs up two different towers (the tower of St. Mary's Basilica and the tower of Town Hall) and count how many stairs there were. They then had to add up the result and tell it to a guard, who would give them a clue directing them to the Pit Stop. The Detour for this leg of the race was Eat It Up or Roll It Out. In Eat It Up, the intersected teams would make their way one and a half miles to an old market. Once there, each team member had to use traditional methods to make one three-inch length of Polish Kielbasa sausage. After finishing, the teams would be served eight feet of cooked Kielbasa. Once each person ate two feet of sausage, the teams would receive their next clue. In Roll It Out, the intersected teams would make their way one and a half miles to the J. Mazurek bakery and properly roll out twenty bagels. When finished, they would make their way on foot one quarter of a mile to a nearby restaurant with a delivery of fresh bagels for the headwaiter. In the Roadblock, one team member had to don a full suit of authentic medieval armor and lead a horse half a mile through the forest to the castle gates. Once at the castle, they had to deliver the horse to the stable boy, enter the courtyard, and search for the Pit Stop.

Leg 9 (Poland → Malaysia)

At the elevated walkway near the Kampung Baru mosque was the first of two Yields in the race. The Detour for this leg of the race was a choice between Artistic Expression or Cookie Confection. In Artistic Expression, teams needed to travel one third of a mile on foot to Dewan Lama. Once there, they had to use an ancient technique known as batik to exactly duplicate one of three patterns onto and then dye a 45 square-foot piece of cloth. In Cookie Confection, teams made their way on foot half a mile to Chow Kit Bomba and had to search through 600 boxes of traditional Malaysian festive cookies, by biting into them, and find the one cookie that had a black licorice center. The Roadblock on this leg of the race was a nod to Malaysia's eco-friendly practice of recycling. Team members had to choose a bicycle with a side cart attached and then scour the neighborhood Taman Sri Hartamas for residents willing to give them their used newspapers. Once they had collected enough newspapers to make a stack eight hands (approximately six feet) high, they would receive their next clue

Leg 10 (Malaysia → People's Republic of China)

In the second of only two Fast Forwards on the race, teams had to travel five miles to a film set located at the former Kai Tak Airport where a high-speed stunt was being filmed for an action movie. When they arrived, they had to get in a car with a professional stunt driver and complete a stunt course, involving sharp turns and the car flipping over. This leg's detour was Kung Fu Fighting or Lost in Translation. In Kung Fu Fighting, teams had to travel five miles to Tonkin Street and find a nearby building (The location was the Former Cheung Sha Wan Police Quarters, but this information was not mentioned). Once there, they had to climb up an 11-story bamboo scaffold while avoiding an ongoing battle between stunt kung fu experts to reach the top and retrieve their next clue. In Lost in Translation, teams needed to make their way four miles to Kowloon City and find Nga Tsin Wai Road. Once there, they had to search among hundreds of similar-looking Chinese signs for the specific sign shown in a photo in their clue. When they matched the photo with the correct store sign, the owner would hand them their next clue. In the Roadblock for this leg, one teammate had to kick down doors, and search the rooms behind the doors for their clue. At Victoria Park, teams had to pull a model boat carrying a Travelocity gnome from one end of a pond to the other without having the gnome fall into the water. The Pit Stop clue was contained in the bottom of the boat.

Leg 11 (People's Republic of China)

In the Roadblock for this leg of the race, teams had to perform the world's tallest Skyjump, walking around the outer rim of the observation deck, and then take a tethered jump off of the tower. The Detour for this leg of the race was Noodle or Dragon. In Noodle, teams had to make two bundles of traditional Chinese noodles. In Dragon, teams had to carry a dragon head and drum and carry it ¾ of a mile to Nan Van Lake to find the one dragon boat the dragon's head matched. After the Detour, teams had to locate a marked Mini Moke and drive themselves to the Pit Stop.

Leg 12 (People's Republic of China → United States)

In the Detour for this leg of the race, teams had to choose between Care Package or Engine Care. In Care Package, teams must fill a 500 pound package with various humanitarian aid items for a neighboring island. Once complete, the teams must then board onto a transport plane and participate in an air drop training exercise. Though easier, the mission would take at least half an hour. In Engine Care, teams had to clean an engine pod and associated flap section on the wing of a B-52 bomber until one of the base's sergeants feels the portion of the plane is clean enough. In the Roadblock, teams had to perform a search and rescue mission. Using a GPS receiver, team members have to find a pilot in the Guam forest, receive new GPS co-ordinates from him, locate the landing zone, and signal for a helicopter to pick them up and bring them back to the naval base.

Leg 13 (United States)

@ - At the Kamaka Air Hangar, teams must sign in one of three helicopters that will take them to Lanai.
@ - At Shipwreck Beach, teams had to run down a mile of beach and then kayak to a buoy near a WWII ship relic to retrieve their next clue.
@ - At the San Francisco Mint, in the race's final task, one team member answered four questions relating to their opinion of other teams on the race, with the answers corresponding to a four digit code. The other team member then had ten minutes to guess the answers and enter the code into a safe containing the last clue. They could get a head start on the other teams if they finished the Roadblock, but if they failed, teams were still allowed to proceed.

In the Detour for this leg of the race, teams had to choose between Under or Over. In Under, teams had to swim into a cave where their next clue would be anchored to the floor of the cave. In Over, teams had to use a paddle board to reach a buoy that had their next clue. Photos on the official CBS website suggest that the unaired Roadblock involved jumping off a cliff into the water below, as Mirna and Danielle were shown doing this task in the photos. The location of the Roadblock was most likely in Hawaii near the Detour, though the exact location is unknown.
