Europe

The French capital was unsuccessful in vying to be the host city for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris. The French Minister of Sports, Jean-Francois Lamour, had made it clear that 2024 represents a choice objective for a Parisian bid. € 35 millions will be planned to build new sports venues around Paris in order to improve quality of the future Parisian bid.[1][2][3]

The organization of the Games in Copenhagen, is being investigated by the Danish government.[4]

Middle East

Beirut is a candidate for the Olympics in 2024. There’s a project called Sannine Zenith which costs 1.2 billion dollars. It should help the city with such a venture. It’s unknown though if, considering the current situation in the country, the Olympic Committee will still consider Beirut’s candidature. [5]

North America

On July 10, 2007 it was revealed that the Canadian Olympic Committee had begun work on a potential bid for the 2020 or 2024 games for Toronto, the capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada.[6] This would be Toronto's third bid for the summer Olympic games, after unsuccessful bids for the 1996 and 2008 games.

Oceania

Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as the next most likely Australian bid city.[7] This news comes on the cusp of an August 2008 interview with AOC Chief John Coates in The Australian newspaper supporting a future Brisbane bid for the Games,[8] possibly within 15 to 20 years, which has been further endorsed by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.[9] The former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has also supported this bid, along with IOC Chief Jacques Rogge, who welcomed a bid from Brisbane in the future.[10] In 1985, Brisbane bid, but was not chosen to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, which was given to Barcelona.

Melbourne is considering a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics. The only major venue that would need to be constructed would be a rowing and canoeing course. The city hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.[11]

South America

President of the Peruvian Institute for Sports, Arturo Woodman, said that Peru would try to bid for the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympic Games.[12]

Trademark controversy

Anticipating bids for the Summer Olympics by Paris, France, in 2005 a Parisian, Mr Gilbert L., registered the trademarks of "Paris 2016", "Paris 2020", "Paris 2024" and "Paris 2028" and associated internet domain names. On March 14, 2007 the High Court of First Instance of Paris (Tribunal d'instance of Paris) ruled that the registration of the domain names was fraudulent and annulled the trademarks.[13]
