I am currently a member of the Stella McCartney Ecommerce team and have been trying to update our page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stella_mccartney) to include the new Stella McCartney Kids information. I do have an account although not sure if I have authorisation to edit the page. I can edit/update it however when I save the changes then leave the site for a time it has disappeared!? Can I check to see if someone is removing it or am I doing something wrong? Many thanks.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    Additional "cost" of multiple edits?

I'm currently working on expanding a table (including references) for the locations of the Boy Scout Asia Pacific Region Jamborees. Each time that I find something in my research, I'm adding the information and the footnotes that come from it. Am I causing any additional "costs" to wikipedia (storage, retrieval time, etc.) by doing these changes in 20 or so edits rather than trying to build them off-line and doing them in one edit?Naraht (talk) 00:46, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For each edit you have to donate $1 (or its equivalent). Just kidding. Nice of you to be concerned, but I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I like more individual edits rather than large complex changes. Makes it easier for other editors to evaluate the changes if they are incremental.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:23, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How do I keep content changed and accurate?

I monitor the Eschatology (religious movement) page and work for the Director of Eschatology, Bruce Smith. I have made revisions to this page to keep it current and accurate, but the changes I've put on are being changed by "unauthorized" individuals who are either being malicious and ill informed. How can I guarantee that the data I put on the page is KEPT as is and is NOT ALTERED? Ronald G. Cosseboom —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rcossebo (talkcontribs) 02:06, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can't guarantee anything. The general way to keep things on Wikipedia is to have it verifiable, well referenced, neutral in tone and fits the fundamental principles by which Wikipedia operates. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 02:37, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In a way, that's what they're asking about, what the process is to get it changed.
Msukgroup, in order to use that image, Solomon (or the photographer who may have the copyright on that image) must release the rights to it so that it can be used under a "free license". Please see Wikipedia:Contact us for instructions on how to submit that photo for use in the article. Dismas|(talk) 04:37, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Sock Puppet

Do previous articles, discussions etc posted by a known Sock Puppet get deleted? Dickietr (talk) 05:47, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We need more background. If you have someone whose edits concern you, you'll need to give us more information, such as what account is making problematic edits, and what the name of their prior account was. --Jayron32 06:47, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sockpuppetry itself isn't a reason to revert a user's edits unless they're unconstructive (which includes contributions to a discussion where they have attempted to turn the tide of the discussion by acting as a sockpuppet, where the comments are usually struck and the fact that they are a sockpuppet is noted). If the user is a sockpuppet of a banned user, their contributions can be reverted at will however, since it has been decided that their negative contributions outweigh the positive ones. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 09:28, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The editors involved are probably sockpuppets, but they are not a confirmed sockpuppet; the confirmed and blocked sockpuppet coterie took the other side in a dispute; see Talk:American Academy of Financial Management. And these edits aren't really part of the sort of discussion where !voting takes place, so there isn't a need to erase them. (I would prefer to keep them as part of the record so people don't think I'm crazy when I say that the only people who edit this article are tendentious conflict-of-interest sockpuppets.) IP Address

    Hello,

I recently created a new wikipedia account. I have previously made several changes which have recorded my IP address. Is there any way in which I can now remove my old IP and utilize the account feature(eg.Anonymous IP)?

Thanks, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gsorensen4 (talkcontribs) 06:28, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, we cannot reattribute the edits to you directly. If you wish to "claim" the edits, you may indicate so on your userpage "Edits made by IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX between Octember 1 and Junly 22 2010 were by me"; however that's the best you can do. Or you can just let them go, if you'd prefer to let your IP be fully anonymous. --Jayron32 06:33, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Abuse and page sabotage

I was in a rock band called Big Daddy (Band). There is an idiot hacker with the username Kintetsubuffalo who keeps reverting an article on this band, and it is annoying the people who were in the band and the true fans of the band. The information he has in there is false. There are unfamiliar names of members and historical inaccuracies. I edited the article, but Kintetsubuffalo reverted it. There must be a way to protect a page from inaccuracies. Big Daddy was a footnote in the history of Rock'n'Roll. Opened for Jay Leno, had top 10 record in UK and Australia. We are relevant But this Kintetsubuffalo person keeps removing even the names of the 5 founding members. I reverted it back to what I had, tho it took hours. Then I tried contacting Kintetsubuffalo to ask that they stop doing this. Funny, this doesn't seem to happen with any other article. I've never seen gross inaccuracies in any of the Wikipedia searches I've done. Why, then, should this Kintetsubuffalo be allowed to continue defacing my attempts at accuracy.

What is a person to do about this situation? Big Daddy deserves a Wikipedia page. Thank you for your time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Normanay1 (talkcontribs) 06:31, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide a verifiable source (newspaper article, or other quality source - see WP:SOURCES for what counts as a good source) for your edits? I will be glad to help you edit the article with good quality, verifiable information. In the meantime I'll look at the article history to get a sense of what is happening. SeaphotoTalk 06:39, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There is a Wikipedia page about Big Daddy. Several editors have reverted your edits, most recently because your editing messed up the formatting of the page. Your response to this was to mess up the formatting again, and then to come here and call one of them names. There is a right way, and a wrong way, to fix the article. Please understand that we all want to get the article correct. However, as you have chosen the wrong way, it isn't working. Since you were a member of the band, you have access to reliable written sources which contain the information you are trying to add. Wikipedia is built upon proper referencing, so if you actually want the information you are trying to add to stay in the article, the right way to do it is to provide us with written evidence which supports the changes you are trying to make. Simply go to Talk:Big Daddy (band), click "New Section" and provide a list of links to website that people can check out so that we can verify what you are trying to add. Let me restate this: It is very important that the Wikipedia article is accurate. However, we need to be able to verify that it is accurate using other written sources. All you need to do is provide those sources. --Jayron32 06:42, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. The site has been on the global spam blacklist ever since the Great Navel-Gazing and Wiki-War of 2006. That's why you can't generally link it. There is a whitelist here on the English Wikipedia that has been used to allow certain links to the site, but only to specific pages. --Ham Maritime (talk) 09:21, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Swapping out a photo

I'm trying to replace a photo related to Portland Center Stage and First Regiment Armory Annex.

    Here is the photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Portland-Armory_Portland-Oregon_2008-May.jpg

Here are the wiki pages where it is displayed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Center_Stage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Armory

Here is the photo that should replace it: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portland-Center-Stage-at-dusk.jpeg

I am a beginner at editing Wikipedia and finding it difficult.

The photo should be changed because 1) it doesn't show off the façade of the building well and 2) the person in the photo is an employee of Portland Center Stage and would like to not be pictured on Wikipedia, particularly while he is lighting a cigarette.

Can you assist me in making this change?

    Buchino (talk) 20:19, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I had done it for you, but I just realize we're going to have to undo it. The original source for the picture you wanted to add is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/portlandcenterstage/4888479363/ which indicates that it is under copyright. Wikipedia cannot, except under very limited circumstances, accept copyrighted work. If you would like to replace the picture, you're going to have to find a free version. The best way to do this is to take a new photo yourself and upload it to commons, and release it under a Wikimedia-compatable liscence such as CC-BY-SA or GFDL. --Jayron32 20:27, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    And I have tagged the file for deletion as a copyvio of http://www.flickr.com/photos/portlandcenterstage/4888479363/ . – ukexpat (talk) 20:31, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But the photo is free for use! Don't tag it for deletion. Portland Center Stage posts those pictures on Flickr for people to use them. Verifiable through their marketing director, public relations manager and others in the marketing department. Buchino (talk) 21:37, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well it is now because the license has been changed. When we first looked at it, it was © All rights reserved. I will remove the deletion tag. – ukexpat (talk) 21:39, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And I have re-re-reupdated the Wikipedia articles with the new pic. Thanks for clearing this all up! --Jayron32 21:49, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Again, I'm new at this. What about how to change the photos now that the rights are correct? Thank you, Ukexpat and Jayron32. Buchino (talk) 21:49, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Boyfriends death

Hi, my boyfriend died on 19 April 2010, I don't know what to do as I've never been in this situation before. We lived together as common law man & wife for almost 5 years. I have his car and the few things that he did own on the property that I'm renting. (most of which I paid for but do not have receipts for) His ex-wife wants to take everything including that which is in the flat that I had before P & I got together. She says that it all belongs to their daughter of 14yrs old. My boyfriend was unemployed during our relationship and I supported him and paid all the bills. The bills grew as I couldn't support us on my salary alone. He did the odd handyman job but that was all. What do I do and who is entitled to what. Please help me as I need closure, this is killing me. Thank you Cindy —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.2.115.125 (talk) 21:39, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    The picture of Jimmy Wales

    Hi there,

The personal appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is making me want to never visit Wikipedia again.. his almost smile and scary care bear stare gaze is burning into my very soul. Is this picture some sort of punishment for all the funny looks he supposedly received 10 years ago? Why punish us with a frightening impersonation of John Travolta? Why?

Get rid of this image and I may consider donating. Until then... someone hunt Jimmy Wales down and slap him upside the head and scream "FIX YA FACE.. IT FRAKKIN CREEPY!" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.243.159.14 (talk) 02:59, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you create an account you can tell the advertisement to go away in Special:Preferences. If you don't want to create an account, you might be able to block it with something like Adblock Plus (I don't know as I haven't tried that). --Teratornis (talk) 05:11, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You don't even need to go into your preferences. There's an X to close the ad in the upper right corner of the image. That did it for me. Dismas|(talk) 05:17, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My daughter wants to become a doctor

    Dear Sir,

My name is Kamel M. AL-Shubbar. I am from Saudi Arabia. My daughter has finished High school recently and applied for government scholarship.

She has received a scholarship from Saudi Government to study Medicine in Holland in Europe.

Lately , the Saudi Government has changed her scholarship from medicine from Medical doctor to Medicine Science specialist .

Her scholar ship was changed due to available seats in Europe. The Euorpian countries gave our Saudi Government only 200 seats, where Scholarship was granted for 5 000 student.

Therefore the Saudi Government is trying to send her to USA to study Medicine science, not a medical doctor . She wants become a Doctor.

My daughter dream is to become a medical doctor.

    My Question :

Do you allow her to study medicine and she will be a doctor in future if she joins your university ?

Is Medical doctors are only for US citizens or any person not a US citizen will be able to study medicine and become a doctor.

Please, this is very urgent to determine her future to accept this scholarship from Saudi Government or if she is not going to be a doctor , she may cancel this scholar ship due to change of major to study science and become medical specialist to perform X-ray or other medical science which she does want.

She wants to be a DOCTOR.

Your reply to this e-mail is very important to help my daughter to become a doctor.

Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Chevy Cruze

Sable232 is out of control read the post about his talks with other users. Sable232 is blocking users because they do not meet his view points. He has also removed information which is true an accurate such as Chevy Cruz is the replacement for the Saturn ION. One can go to GM and find the replacement match for their Saturn counterpart and the car is the Cruz, Sable232 has removed this information. I have received a warning from him and if I edited anymore I will be blocked because of vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.117.123.72 (talk) 14:46, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, you're only going to dig further into your own Wiki-grave by accusing others by being "out of control" and making unfounded assertions. You wouldn't tell Britannica to "go to GM" to find information, and neither will you tell a Wikipedia editor to to the same. You are adding the information, so you must prove the information is valid by citing sources. Until you do so, Sable232 is correct in reverting you. Xenon54 (talk) 15:05, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not the only one accusing Sable232 "out of control" read the rest of the people who edited pages auto pages. Paper work one receives from GM states that the Chevy Cruz is the replacement for the ION. Sable232 never said that he/she removed it because it was not referenced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.117.123.72 (talk) 22:44, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

It looks like someone else fixed it already, but in the future, you can click the "history" tab while viewing the article in question. Then select an old version of the article (in this case, the one just before you started editing) by clicking the time and date of that version. If you select "edit" while viewing the old version, then hit "save page", you will return to the older version. Wikipedia font

All articles on Wikipedia.com now show up in a cursivefont that is very had to read on screen. Is there a way to change this font into Arial or something sans-serif? It's becoming increasingly difficult to ready articles on this site, and as a result my use of Wikipedia has reduced drastically.

Andreea —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.217.65 (talk) 16:02, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia just tells your browser to use the sans-serif font listed in its settings. When the font gets screwed up this usually means your browser's setting has been changed. The exact location of the setting depends on your browser. For example, in Firefox, it's at Tools -> Options (or Edit -> Preferences) -> Content -> Advanced (under Fonts and Colors). please don't send me messages based on edits I haven't done to articles I've never read; assuming an IP address corresponds to a user is about as logical as assuming that the moon is made of cheese or that someone should be fined for making an unfunny joke on Twitter. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.154.118.74 (talk) 17:44, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No such assumption is made. The bottom of all IP talk pages has a box explaining this, for example User talk:86.154.118.74. Nearly all talk page messages are dated and were made shortly after an edit from that IP address. A large part of the messages will be seen by the right person. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:25, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you choose not to create (or not to use) an account, then the only way Wikipedia has of identifying you is the IP address you are using. The talk page for that address is the only place it can send messages. --ColinFine (talk) 23:05, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Cleanup template for bad English

Is there an appropriate cleanup template to put on an article that is written by someone with a poor command of English and that needs a better English speaker familiar with the subject matter to clean up? How about {{cleanup-rewrite}} wia a reason? See the template documentation. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 04:11, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think because of the frequency of the situation I mention, we might want to have a specific template to address it, and perhaps a page listing articles with such template. -- Mwalcoff (talk) 04:28, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I remember this being discussed by the Guild of Copy Editors, so I think you'd find support for such a template. There'd be no need to create a special page, though – the template should automatically place any page into a specific maintenance category, similar to how {{copyedit}} puts pages into Category:All articles needing copy edit. Inserting New Words?

How do we enter new words or companies to Wikipedia? Robin Kruk —Preceding unsigned comment added by RobinKruk (talkcontribs) 04:36, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. The first thing to note is that Wikipedia isn't a dictionary, so we wouldn't usually want to cover "new words". (Our sister project Wiktionary is a dictionary, but it too has rules about neologisms: see here.)
As for companies, the first thing is to establish whether they meet our notability inclusion criteria: that is, whether they're already covered in enough detail by multiple third-party reliable sources (like books and newspapers) to prove that they merit an article in an encyclopedia. If they do, then the instructions at this page explain how to actually create the article. But please note that "new" entities often fail to meet inclusion criteria, because they're less likely to have been the subject already of substantial coverage in third-party reliable sources. If what you are looking for is a directory site to list a new commercial entity, Wikipedia is not the best place to do this: our list of alternative outlets suggests some better alternatives. Harassment

I feel as if I'm being stalked and harassed by a moderator on this website. Despite my postings of accurate information with resources to back them up, my edits are considered COI. How can I report this person for harassment? Taurenlegend (talk) 05:05, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Taurenlegend. I'm sorry you are feeling uncomfortable about the situation.
Looking at your user page, I see that another editor (who I believe is not actually an administrator) placed a conflict of interest notice on your talk page. It does look to me, based on things you have written stating that you represent a company about which you have been editing, that this was a reasonable thing for the other editor to do. Our conflict of interest policy applies to all edits made by parties that have a close relationship with an entity about which they edit, even if those edits involve adding material with good sources. That's because such a relationship makes it harder to maintain an entirely neutral point of view about the subject, and means it's a good idea to get others' consensus for changes you want to see to the content. Your best bet, if you want to contribute on an area in which you have a conflict, is to propose your edits on the relevant article's talk page, and let other editors assess them and include them as appropriate.
Before escalating a dispute with anyone on Wikipedia, it's also a very good idea to try to talk to them directly at first (probably on their user talk page), explain what your concerns are, and give them a chance to explain their actions in turn. Have you tried to do this in this case? Gonzonoir (talk) 10:32, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maxweber1864. Looking at the userspace draft article you've written at User:Maxweber1864/new article name here, I guess you may be trying to move the article to the title Stephen Turner? That page is indeed protected because it's been the site of the repeated recreation of unsuitable material. It doesn't look like your draft has anything in common with these earlier unsuitable creation attempts, so you could request unprotection here.
Before you move your draft to article space, though, it would be a good idea to add some references to third-party reliable sources that would demonstrate how your article's subject meets notability criteria. The relevant inclusion guideline is WP:PROF. It sounds to me like the article's subject probably meets these guidelines, but it would be extremely helpful if you could add some references to demonstrate it. We have an article about Indian Railways which may help you. You can also try asking at one of Wikipedia's reference desks (but please note that this board, the help desk, is only intended for questions about using Wikipedia itself). Gonzonoir (talk) 10:34, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Disappearing Text

I am currently a member of the Stella McCartney Ecommerce team and have been trying to update our page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stella_mccartney) to include the new Stella McCartney Kids information. I do have an account although not sure if I have authorisation to edit the page. I can edit/update it however when I save the changes then leave the site for a time it has disappeared!? Can I check to see if someone is removing it or am I doing something wrong? Many thanks.
