History
Briarcliff Manor was originally part of the vast land holdings of Dutchman Frederick Philipse, who owned the stretch of land spanning from Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx to the Croton River. The Philipses, who were loyal to the crown, lost their land after the American Revolution.
In 1890, Walter W. Law bought his first 232 acres (0.94 km2) when he retired from W. & J. Sloan; he called this land Briarcliff Farm. He later owned 5,000 acres (20 km2) and developed the village. It is said that "Manor" was added to the village's name after Law's friend Andrew Carnegie jokingly referred to Law as the "Laird of Briarcliff Manor" and the name stuck.[citation needed]
Neighborhoods
- The Tree Streets are a network of streets named after trees, such as Satinwood, Larch, and Oak. Some of the oldest houses in the town lie on these streets.
- North State Road is a street with apartment buildings, co-ops, single family homes and businesses.

It is home to the Briarcliff Manor Police & Fire Department as well as a number of commercial establishments. Other significant areas
Scarborough
Scarborough is a hamlet split between the villages of Briarcliff Manor and Ossining along the Hudson River that has a post office and train station on the Metro-North Hudson Line. Scarborough is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. During the early 20th century families such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers entertained guests on their "country" estates with sweeping river views in the Scarborough area. Also in Scarborough is the Scarborough Presbyterian Church erected by Mrs. Elliott F. Shepard (a Vanderbilt) as a memorial to her late husband. Across the street from the large stone church is Sparta Cemetery, which contains the grave of "The Leatherman", subject of a Pearl Jam B-side of the same name.
Chilmark
Chilmark is a residential community and shopping center that are on the northern end of Briarcliff. The shopping center includes a supermarket, Carvel ice cream store, Prescription Plus Pharmacy, Radio Shack, pizzeria, and other stores. The name of the area comes from the castle-like Chilmark Mansion. Like Scarborough, Chilmark is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. Children from this neighborhood fall under the Ossining School District's jurisdiction.
Education
The village is known for its award-winning school district (ranked 94th nationally as a public school system)[citation needed] and is home to Briarcliff High School. In 2005, Briarcliff Middle School was named a Blue Ribbon School.[5]
Colleges and universities
Briarcliff Manor is home to a campus of Pace University and was the former home of Briarcliff College.
Points of interest
- The Sleepy Hollow Country Club was formerly the home of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's granddaughter Margaret, designed by Stanford White. [6]
- The late Brooke Astor's home Holly Hill is located in Briarcliff Manor.
- The Edith Macy Conference Center, an internationally important conference and training facility owned by the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), is in Briarcliff Manor.
- Briarcliff is the site of the Trump National Golf Course (formerly Briar Hall Country Club), owned by the real-estate mogul Donald Trump.
Briarcliff Manor in popular culture
- Much of James Patterson's 2005 novel Honeymoon takes place in Briarcliff Manor (where Patterson owns a house and lives for part of the year [7]). The village is described in detail (especially Pleasantville Road). There is also some reference to the nearby village of Pleasantville.
- Portions of the movies Super Troopers,[8] Private Parts, and Bed of Roses were filmed in Briarcliff.[citation needed]
- Part of the memorable and lengthy car chase scene in the movie "The Seven-Ups" was filmed in this area on the Taconic State Parkway, notably the ending.
- Portions of the movie American Gangster were filmed here, notably the large white mansion on Scarborough Road in Briarcliff. The more modest house portrayed in NC was also in town.
- Artie Lange, the sidekick of Howard Stern, got his start spinning records at 107.1 in Briarcliff Manor.[citation needed]
- 107.1 WNRW (now WXPK) broadcast from town gave Howard Stern his first paying radio job as an afternoon disc jockey (DJ) for $4/hour and eventually took over several other duties, including both program and production directors. It was at WRNW that Stern realized that he would have to be funnier than normal DJs if he wanted to be a success. His first antics on the air included bizarre commercial spots complete with weird sound effects and off-color calls to the business owners. Stern lasted about two years at WRNW.
