Gauhar Khan (born Gauhar Zafar Khan on August 23, 1981), is an Indian model, VJ and actress who appears in Hindi films. She is the younger sister of actress Nigaar Khan. A current participant of the Indian reality show Bigg Boss 7, she walked out on day forty-five but returned to the house the next day.

Early life

Khan was born into a Muslim, Pashtun family in Pune, Maharashtra, India. She has four siblings, three sisters and one brother. She is the sister of actress Nigaar Khan. Her sister Zakia Khan is a Fashion designer, Sana Khan an Interior designer and brother Asad Khan is an architecture, and all of them based in Dubai. She did her schooling from Mount Carmel Convent School and got bachelor degree from Graphic Era University. She is currently living in Mumbai with her sister Nigaar and parents.

Modelling

Khan has modeled for Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar, Payal Jain and Neeta Lulla. She has also acted in a couple of television ads Ford Ikon, Bajaj Auto, Opel Car and Tanishq jewellery.

In 2002, she participated in Femina Miss India contest and came fourth and represented India in Miss International contest that year. She ruled Indian Fashion World for four years 2002-2006.[2]

Television

Gauhar Khan started off with appearances in a couple of music videos.[3] She has anchored the film gossip show Page 3 on Zoom Television.[4] In 2012, she participated in a popular celebrity dance show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. In Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3 she paired up with Gurmeet Chaudhary, and became the 1st runner up of the show.[5]

Khan along with her sister Nigaar Khan appeared in a TV show "The Khan Sisters" which was the Indian version of "Keeping up with the Kardashians". The show follows their life including modeling shows, auditions and interviews though the lavish setting of these starlets suggests much is staged.

Acting career

Debut and breakthrough (2003–2011)

Khan started her acting career with the 2003 film Miss India: The Mystery, a drama revolving around the troubled model. The film didn't do well at the Box Office, however her acting was critically appreciated. She began 2011 with an item number "Nasha" in the 2004 Madhur Bhandarkar's film Aan: Men at Work, and "Naa Pere Kanchan Mala" in Telugu film Shankar Dada M.B.B.S..

Khan rose to get fame with portraying the lead role opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the 2009 Yash Raj's Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, a moderately successful at the box office. However, Khan's performance was praised by film critics. Anupama Chopra said, "Gauhar was fashionable, ambitious and smart receptionist, she was sharply etched and memorable as Koena. in the film".[6] Namrata Joshi from Outlook India noted that "Leading the pack is Gauhar Khan as the feisty office secretary. Gauhar is the colorful character in the film who played too nice."[7] The Economic Times added that "The one item-number old Gauhar surprise with an amazing natural performance and is a talent to look forward to". The New York Times wrote: "Gauhar, a heartthrob who has quickly become a star playing cads, turn in a skillfully understated performance. Her Harpreet is an old-school heroine: solid, righteous, compassionate. You can't help cheering for her."[8]

In 2010, she did another item number "Parda Parda" in Milan Luthria's Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. "Parda Parda" was well received by critics and audiences alike, and become popular on music channels and radio stations.

Khan next appeared as outspoken and rebellious Samara Shroff in the action thriller Game. The film failed to do well at box office, but Khan earned critical acclaim for her performance. IMBD stated that, "Gauhar's character though central to the permise hardly leaves an impact owing to the soul-less performance."[9] Technorati noted that, "Except Gauhar and Abhishek Bachann the rest of the cast is strictly okay." Anupama Chopra said, "Gauhar tries too hard to be cool but she needs to get idea of good scripts." NDTV observed that "Gauhar as the loyal secretary Samara is nicely outfitted."[10]

She achieved further critical and commercial success for her role of the kind-hearted courtesan Chand Bibi, in the 2012 romantic drama Ishaqzaade, in which she also did two item numbers "Jhalla Walla" and "Chokra Jawaan". Her performance received positive feedback from critics and her performance was praised in particular. Shomini Sen of Zee News stated that, "Gauhar as a kind-hearted prostitute Chand sizzles in two songs. It is pity that she is used so less in the film."[11] Mrigank Dhaniwala from Koimoi observed, "Gauhar, who plays courtesan Chand, does very well. Taran Adarsh said, "Gauhar is lovely in a special role. Also, she dances very well in the two tracks." Glamsham described Khan as "Gauhar was hilarity in mood to the sensual pacing of a typical Bollywood "item-song" feast".[12]

She is a current participant of the Indian reality show, Bigg Boss 7, where the guests Shahid Kapoor, Ileana D'Cruz, Anil Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Jaaved Jaaferi, Sania Mirza and Kangana Ranaut described her as an outspoken and the most powerful contestant of the show. [13][14]

Personal life

Khan shares a close bond with her family, and visits them regularly to Dubai as her family lives there. She lives by herself in Mumbai with her sister Nigaar and admits to missing the presence of her family there. She says, "I miss them, but luckily I have a life of my own, which keeps me from getting homesick. I wouldn’t want them to uproot their lives from Dubai just to be with me. A practicing Muslim, Khan considers religion to be an important aspect of her life and makes frequent visits to religious shrines, eating Halal food and offer Namaz five-times a day.

While being a participant of Bigg Boss 7, it was widely speculated that she was in a romantic relationship with another contestant Kushal Tandon. However, it was denied by both the actors saying that "they are just good friends". She has since denied reports of link-ups, stating that she is "not in a frame of mind to be in a relationship".

Khan has participated in a number of concerts and award ceremonies. She took part in 13th IIFA Awards with actor Ayushmann Khurrana, held in Singapore. In late 2012, she performed at IIFA Rocks Fashion Show with Parineeti Chopra, Priyanka Chopra, Dia Mirza, Hussain Kuwajerwala and Bipasha Basu. The following year, Khan performed at Stardust Awards and Miss Diva. She also performed at Dubai Festival City's Ahlan Bollywood Concert with Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Sophie Choudry, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Sohail Khan.

In the media

Khan has always been in the media spotlight, her debut was also heavily hyped due to the stated reason. Khan is known for having a "outspoken" and "bold" personality, as perceived from various media interactions, how she presents herself in public and her choice of films. Since the release of Ishaqzaade (2012), Khan has been widely recognized as a "fashionista", due to her unique sense of style. Therefore, she regularly features on fashion magazine covers based in India, such as Stardust and Filmfare. Khan was also widely appreciated for being a fashionista and for her performances in her films.

Khan is considered a style icon in India – the media cites her figure, height, smile, and eyes as her distinctive physical features.
