Cloud rap, also called trillwave[1][2] is a style of hip hop music noted for its use of "ethereal, dreamlike beats"[3] and frequently stream of consciousness, surreal, or absurd lyrics. Cloud rap is comparable to chillwave, both musically through its dreamy qualities and to its origin as an "internet sub-subgenre"[4] whose producers collaborate through the internet, with various producers surfacing in the Bay Area, New Jersey, and Seattle.[4] Experimental hip hop group cLOUDDEAD and avant-garde hip hop label Anticon, whose sound is rooted in hip hop but uses psychedelic influences and surreal lyrics[5] has been cited as a precedent to the genre and are at least partially responsible for the name "cloud rap".[6]
