Hi there, something is going on and YouTube is down. While YouTube is down, some unregistered users decided to vandalize the page by adding the death date and renaming the CEO of YouTube to CEO of PornHub.

Word Processing Options

Hi, I have somehow managed to change my word processors action from the usual, where you position your caret, enter a letter and it is inserted into the word to: if your position your caret and enter a letter, instead of inserting it, it inserts and deletes the letter you are highlighting. This makes it impossible to go back and edit text as you cant insert, only insert and delete. I can't find an option to change it back. Can anyone help please many thanks  TUXLIE  07:50, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Have you pressed the "INSERT" key, usually in the upper right part of the keyboard? Try that. Chaheel Riens (talk) 08:12, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

@Tuxlie: Yes, what Chaheel said. The "normal" way your computer works is called "insert" mode. You can toggle "insert" mode on or off by hitting a specific "INSERT" key on some computers, or by using CTRL+"i" on most computers. -Arch dude (talk) 16:31, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Why has Internationalist Theatre a main space Wikipedia article since 2 yrs ago been put on NOINDEX_ Category ?

@Alizafar567: As far as I can see, the page Internationalist Theatre includes the {{Undisclosed paid}} template, which in turn includes {{NOINDEX}} and that's probabaly a way the article falls into the NOINDEX category. When the paid editing issue gets resolved and the template is removed, the article will (possibly) get indexed normally. --CiaPan (talk) 09:39, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Why has the Wikipedia main space article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelique_Rockas since 2 yrs ago been removed from google and bing indexing and been replaced by https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Angelique_Rockas which it is clearly not ? @Eagleash: Angelique Rockas EN does not appear on google search as a website link but only in the infoocx on the right hand side. It is still excluded from the index of website links.

@Alizafar567: I'm not entirely certain what has happened here, but it looks as if duplicate pages were created alongside each other one as a draft and one possibly directly into mainspace. In these circumstances it is not uncommon for the draft to be turned into a redirect as happened previously here. It is one way of dealing with the duplication although I'm not sure whether it is the most satisfactory. The mainspace article is at Angelique Rockas and the draft is at Draft:Angelique Rockas.

With regard to the failure to show in Google search, it seems Angelique Rockas also had a paid-editing template which was only removed yesterday so it might be a case of Google not quite catching up as yet. @Sansuielectronics: Hello and welcome to the Help Desk. I have posted some important information about your username on your user talk page, please review it as soon as you can. Regarding your question, you should not attempt to write about your company. You have what Wikipedia calls a conflict of interest. I assume you are an employee of the company, which also means you are a paid editor. You must disclose the latter per Wikipedia's Terms of Use. Both of those mean that you are too close to your company to be able to write about it objectively. Wikipedia has no interest in what a company wants to say about itself. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that summarizes what independent reliable sources state about article subjects like a company. Those subjects must be shown to meet the relevant notability guidelines, such as the ones for companies. Not every company merits an article here, even within the same field.

If you just want to tell the world about your company, you should do so on its own website, social media, or other alternative forum. If your company truly merits an encyclopedic article here, you shouldn't be the one to write it. 331dot (talk) 09:48, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. Wikipedia articles are created by volunteers across the globe. While it is technically not a violation of our Terms of Service for someone to create articles for pay, they must fully disclose what they are doing, and frankly they encounter a great amount of hostility from the volunteer community. @Pradeepk123: I'm sorry but we cannot recommend someone you can hire to write about what I assume to be you or your company for you. That's something you will have to do yourself, but understand that anyone you hire cannot guarantee any certain result, such as the article surviving deletion. They will also need to comply with WP:PAID and declare that you hired them. Please note that Wikipedia is not for merely telling the world about your organization or you. The subject must be notable. Your best bet, if the subject truly merits an article, is to wait for an independent editor to take note of it and write on their own. Do be aware that there are people who claim the ability to create a Wikipedia article, and some claim or imply that that they have extra privileges or abilities to get that article onto Wikipedia. This is untrue: do not pay these people until the article has remained on Wikipedia for a month if they make such a claim. If the subject is notable (by our definition, not yours -- see WP:N), a competent high-school student can create an article that will succeed. I am trying to add additional photos to the Essex, CT page under Culture and Attractions. Are there any help videos that would walk me through it? Hey Betsy, thanks for stopping by. If you're just looking for some tutorials or guidance in uploading videos, there's a help menu at Help:Menu/Images and media that may be useful. Specifically, the first question (most important, really) is if the images in question are legally allowed to be put on Wikipedia. If you own the copyright on the images, or if they are in the public domain, you may upload them to Wikimedia Commons, which is the main media repository. If you do NOT own the copyright, or if the image copyright is held by someone else, or if the image copyright is of unclear status, it should probably not be uploaded (there are some exceptions to that, but it's too complicated to get into right now). If you do wish to upload images you are allowed to upload, here is the upload wizard in Commons. It will walk you through the process. Once it is uploaded this page will help you add them to Wikipedia articles. --Jayron32 16:49, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

@Eadamico: I fixed your link. Based on your struggles with that link, I think you might want to play around on a test page a bit to get a better feel for how these things work. You can use your own user page at User:Eadamico, or a separate page such as User:Eadamico/test. But even making little mistakes in a real article is not too bad. We'll just fix it. Now for the photo. First, make sure you are the photographer or that you otherwise own the copyright. This is essential because we must obey the law, including copyright law. Now, get the photo onto your computer in some way. Now, go the the main page of Wiki Commons, which is where we keep (almost) all our photos. click this link: c:Wikimedia Commons. Then, click on the "upload" button near the top right of that page, and follow the instructions after that. At the very end, the photo is saved into commons and you are told the syntax that you can then place in the article here at Wikipedia. Try that in your test page until you are happy with the way it is added, and then put it in the actual target page. On the Human Body Temperature page you have two items with exact same info which I believe is incorrect. See below:

I've added a heading to your question to separate it from the one above.

See the note just below the table in the infobox on Human Body Temperature. It points out that fever and hyperthermia differ in their underlying mechanisms, and that there are different cutoff temperatures defined in different sources. There is no universally accepted definition of the terms.

  Lourdes, that's certainly a weird one. The only thought I have is that there was some invisible unicode-type character that was added (since it apparently added a byte to the page). On another note, I'm using reply-link to reply to your comment and seem to have found a bug - the script automatically fills in the username to tag the user being replied to, but it filled in your username with "❤️" instead of Lourdes. Shoal Creek in Austin -- Flooding History

Your history of Shoal Creek is very well done. However, I wanted to let you know of one fact you might want to include. My parents built the first house on the west side of the creek past 38th street in 1949. The address was 4105 Jefferson. The first bad flood occurred on the night of Oct. 28, 1960. Around midnight, the creek was in our house about two feet high. All the homes in our neighborhood on the creek were flooded. The water was waste high in the street. flooding occurred because a developer about three blocks down the street above the creek on the east side was dumping waste into the creek and created a damn. Hello IP user. The formatting error was simple that you inserted a new line after the citation. But I have reverted your change: the pronunciation of the place in Gaelic does not seem to me to be at all relevant to the pronunciation of the title in English. In any case, giving a Gaelic name for the pronunciation is extremely unhelpful to English speakers. I think you possibly meant to give not the pronunciation, but the Gaelic form of the name; but again, unless you can adduce a source that his title in English is the Gaelic form of the name, I don't see how that is relevant. Usernames that violate BLP

This came up at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion#Binksternet-related trolling.

If someone created a new account with the name User:example's real name is Larson E. Whipsnade and his social security number is 078-05-1120 (See[1]), is it true, as claimed at the MfD above, that nothing can be done and the user name will remain visible forever? @Guy Macon: According to Help:RevisionDelete at MediaWiki, it's technically possible to remove usernames from revisions. I don't see any policy-related reasons why usernames that are serious violations of WP:OUTING or WP:BLP wouldn't be removed. TeraTIX 10:36, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Accounts cannot be (technically) completely deleted, but local oversighters (locally) and stewards (globally) have ability to hide usernames that violates Wikimedia Oversight Policy, which makes it invisible to everyone but stewards, local OSes (if an account exist on their project), and certain number of WMF staffers. — regards, Revi 11:59, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

 Fixed - See the change made here that fixed it. You just needed to remove three single-quotes on each side of the publisher title to change it from being both bold and italicized to being just italicized. Adding two single-quotes on each side will italicize the text (but not add bold font), three single-quotes adds only bolded font (no italics), and five single-quotes adds both fonts. ;-) ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 01:18, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi, I am a new user(only was autoconfirmed today) and I want to know what should I do when I see vandalism. Can you take a look at this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Kane, one sentence says "PICKLE REE divined..." is this vandalism because I'm pretty sure PICKLE REE does not show up in any of the books.

Most articles can be edited by anyone. This means that in most articles, vandalism can be reverted by anyone. This particular instance looked like the simple addition of a couple of words. Some IP kindly removed it. What's more problematic is what to do when you suspect alteration. I could explain, but a full explanation would be laborious for both you and me until you're familiar with the exploration of article history. This isn't hard to understand, once you familiarize yourself with it. Here is a silly fellow. (I always think of such people as male.) I "reverted" his last, stupid edit to an article. What I could have done instead is to use the "history" to see, and then to edit, the version of the article that preceded his silly interference. Attempting to edit an old version brings up a warning message. Ignore the warning message and instead simply click "Publish changes" (of course providing an informative edit summary). If you'd additionally like to make other improvements to the article, go ahead, but the article history will be easier for others to understand if you make these improvements in one or more separate edits. -- Hoary (talk) 04:23, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Stray reference

Hi, on the English Wikipedia page for Globeville, Denver, there is a stray reference at the very bottom of the page, just above the categories. This reference occurs by itself, after the regular references. I cannot fix this because I cannot find the reference anywhere when I edit the page. Need help on grammar

I have edited the article of EOKA, a massive edit.[3] My edit was reverted, which caused me frustration as I had worked for 2 weeks and used 3 great books on the subject- probably the 3 best. The user who did the revert explained that grammar was one of the reasons he did it. When I answered him that he could just help to improve, he declined and proposed for me to go back to el.WP. Can anyone help me fix the grammar mistakes? You can find the version in my Sandbox. The section that need improvement is the "Armed struggle". Is this the appropriate place to ask for such help? Hello Cinadon36. You should not attempt to undertake such large edits that have a high probability of being challenged. You should attempt such edits small bits at a time, with edit summaries (which you've ignored). And if your edits are reverted, you need to take up the discussion on the talk page (which you have). And when you find that consensus does not exist on the talk page for your overall changes (it doesn't exist as of right now), then you need to propose the changes step by step, bit by bit, rather than en masse. So if it's only grammar that you wish to improve, without inserting heavily slanted POV statements, continue discussions on the talk page. Read dispute resolution for more information on this. Thank you both for your comments. Lourdes, I am following dispute resolution as you suggested. Hope it will get us somewhere. As for POV, it is not a POV edit I am trying to insert. But I do understand why they are objecting the edit on such a claim. It is because EOKA is a highly controversial and polarizing subject. Among the right-wingers Greek Cypriots, they are considered heroes. Among British were seen as villains, during the past decades. Among Turkish Cypriots were considered super-villains. That 's why any attempt to write the article according to mainstream scholars (RS) is seen a "POV pushing". I wish more users, not heavily interested in EOKA, could offer a helping hand. Is there a way to make a call to a non-POV audience? Would that be appropriate? User:Dbfirs Are you talking about the block capitals used in the translation of EOKA's first pamphlet? The file is commons:File:Züge, Landnahmen und Siedlungsgebiete der Nordmänner - 800-1050.png. The German legend and also the German text on the map are part of the image made by Mediatus. The language can only be changed by making a new version of the file with image software outside Wikipedia, and uploading the new file with another name. Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; name "CIAAW2016" defined multiple times with different content

Hi there, I was browsing Standard atomic weight when I noticed that once of the references has some big red text with the error Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; name "CIAAW2016" defined multiple times with different content. This ref isn't actually directly defined anywhere in the article, though. It seems to be transcluded in from various templates, via Template:CIAAW2016. Actually, the documentation for this template also has the invalid ref tag error.

I'm not very experienced with templates, so I'm not sure how to fix it. I made an attempt with this edit by making the text value in both switch cases equal, but that didn't seem to work. Does anyone have any insight on what is causing this problem?

Actually, the duplicate text feels like a code smell. Is there perhaps a better way to write that template? Ahiijny (talk) 01:06, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Two different names on two different maps but same feature

(This was posted on WP:NORN but that forum is fairly low traffic) I have a question about how WP:NOR applies to maps. File:Micronesia and Marshall islands bathymetry.pdf comes from here and shows two seamounts named Aean̄-Kaņ and Wōd-Eņ Iōn̄. This publication has a differently styled bathymetric map of the same area, and this map shows two seamounts named Marovoiy and Nazimova. Based on a comparison of the two maps, Marovoiy = Aean̄-Kaņ and Wōd-Eņ Iōn̄ = Nazimova; would this conclusion be acceptable under WP:NOR? There is no source explicitly making the connection. Be really careful when it comes to disputed naming of Pacific features, as they're one of Wikipedia's perennial hot potatoes. Because of the region's history, it's not unusual for China, Russia, the US, Japan, Korea, and whichever European power happened to reach the region first to have each given something their own name, and some of Wikipedia's most venomous and protracted edit wars have been over the naming of minor Pacific geographical features (because they're too obscure for there to be an obvious WP:COMMONNAME)—Liancourt Rocks, which is currently up to 22 pages of argument about the name and counting, is one that sticks in my mind. In this particular case, I disagree with Lourdes; given the sensitivity, I'd say the only approach you can safely follow in this particular case is to actually describe the sources ("the US government labels it Aean̄-Kaņ, a Russian source labels it Marovoiy") rather than explicitly state that the two terms are synonymous and describe the same feature, or favoring one name over another. ‑ Iridescent 09:34, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

How do I merge the pages Working_in_Canada and Canadian_Job_Bank?

Back in March, William Graham proposed that the the page Working_in_Canada be merged in into the page Canadian Job Bank. No one has objected. As someone with some knowledge of Canada and the sites involved, I think this is an excellent idea. As a regular editor, do I have the power to go in and do this, or are some higher level permissions required? If I can do this, which is the best place to find some instructions? Help fixing link of existing article

Hi, I am unable to find a copyright tag for an image. The tag is

Licenced under Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0) from an image located at the National Portrait Gallery UK.

The file must not be transferred to Commons because it is not free, but it should satisfy all the criteria at WP:NFCC (which is a tad more restrictive than "fair use"), so, it is acceptable on the local wiki. Existence of God sidebar

Alos, Etjohnso, if that draft is moved to mainspace, it is liable to be deleted very quickly, as it makes no attempt to establish that the course is notable. Remember that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article, or people associated with it, say, know, or think, about the subject. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have chosen to publish about it. It follows that unless there is substantial independently published material about a subject, no article can be written on it: that is what we mean by Notability in the Wikipedia world. Most universities, and some departments of universities, have enough published about them to give them notability, but not many university programs. Hello, Adebowale.J. Wikipedia doesn't work like that. There isn't a "team": there are thousands of volunteer editors, who work on what they choose to work on. It is not easy creating a new article on Wikipedia, and I always advise new editors to spend a few weeks or months working on some of our six million existing articles (many of which could do with a lot of improvement) and learning how Wikipedia works before trying the challenging task of creating a new one. Furthermore, writing about somebody connected with you is even harder, because of your Conflict of interest: you are strongly discouraged from doing this (follow the link to see why). This is even more so if you are in any way paid to do this: you are required to make a declaration if that is the case.

Wikipedia will accept an article on Mr Ozor only if he meets the criteria for notability (in the special way Wikipedia uses the word): this means that several people who have no connection with him or his company have chosen to publish material about him, in reliable places (such as major newspapers, or books from reputable publishers): the article should be almost entirely based on these sources. Very little in the article should come from him himself, or from the company. Because of your connection, you are likely to find it difficult to keep to what has been independently published; and you may also find it hard to write in a neutral way about your CEO.

Finally, you should be aware that if you succeed in writing an article about your CEO that is accepted into Wikipedia, you (and he) will have no control over its contents thereafter: any editor will be free to edit it as they see fit, according to Wikipedia's rules and policies and what the published sources say. You might like to look at the essay An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing.

Hello, the article on Foxtrot does include the term "swing" (e.g. "Today, the dance is customarily accompanied by the same big band music to which swing is also danced.") As Archdude mentions, you may choose to add more material on the connection between the two dance genres within the article, using reliable sources as citations. Maximum size of cited article in source

You can use the |display-authors=x parameter where x is a number which determines the number of authors to list before appending 'et al'. I have done that now. But on a personal note, even the source text is over bloated now and there's no harm in reducing them to say the first 10, as the article gets more content.–Ammarpad (talk) 21:15, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Login / 2fa problem?

I'm having problems logging in.

Actually, I'm logged in to Wikipedia on my computer just fine. I'm trying to log in on the Wikipedia app on my phone. It asks for my username and password, which I provide, and then I click login. It then goes to another sign in page with username, password, and "Two-Factor Authentication Code". I *thought* that I would get a code from "Google Authenticator", but when I do that it says "failed".
