== Re: "Domain_hack" wiki-page ==

Hi Oshwah,

I just received a message saying my edit of the wikipage "Domain_hack" was reverted because it contained a suspicious link.

The edit that I submitted was:

"On the 8th April 2020, a new hobbyist website, [https://Nami.ng Nami.ng] was launched - listing short single-word domain hacks currently in personal or business use, as well as those used either for redirection, or as a domain shortener by larger corporations.

Could you please help out on how to make the edit successfully.

In all transparency, yes, it is my project, but it is also highly relevant to the topic. Would be happy to have the link in the references, and take out the direct link from the article.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you in advance, and hope you are keeping safe and healthy.

Alex

Private wikis

Hi, I just wanted to know if you know how much private wikis can be seen and if they can come up on search results like yahoo and google. Also do you know where I can find help with creating some? Cryptozoology is something that I might start with as this really intersts me. The reason that I have contacted you is because I was told you might be able to help me. Davidgoodheart (talk) 01:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Davidgoodheart! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. When you refer to a "private wiki", what does this actually mean? A draft page on Wikipedia that you haven't published yet? Or a MediaWiki site that you create yourself on your own domain? Is that MediaWiki domain public and accessible to the internet? The best thing to do is assume that if it's open to the internet, it will be indexed by a search engine and able to be searched. However, user pages, draft pages, and other pages on Wikipedia aren't indexed by search engines such as Google due to having a flag set on them telling their index bots to skip that page. This makes sure that nothing belligerently incorrect or abusive is indexed and can be searched for on their engine. When you can, please provide me with some additional context and details and I'll be more than happy to help you further. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great weekend and happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:02, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of a MediaWiki site since they look very much like real wikis. Do you know where I could get some help with making some? Also please let me know if there is any way that I can link them to the internet. Thanks for your help, and I like your profile picture as well! Creatig a Page

Hello, I want a biography page to create about Turkish District Governer Ömer Faruk Çelik in English. When I wrote en.wikipedia.org.wiki/Omer_Faruk_Celik on seeking bar, the page was protected by you due to "this high-risk page is permanently template-protected to prevent vandalism". Could you please remove a ban on this page? or How can I create an biography about that person? Thanks. Bkaratas (talk) 11:34, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Bkaratas this Ömer Çelik? Glen 11:38, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glen not Ömer Çelik, different person Ömer Faruk Çelik ----> [[1]]Bkaratas (talk) 11:46, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bkaratas Okay thanks, but Ömer Faruk Çelik isn't protected. What message are you seeing when you click here? Glen 11:51, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glen When I click on page that shows me "The article that you're looking for doesn't exist." but there is a red lock sign (it means this high-risk page is permanently template-protected to prevent vandalism) top right-hand corner on the page. So, can I still publish an article? Then I was going to start writing and the title Ömer Faruk Çelik was going to be Draft:Ömer Faruk Çelik. How can I remove this "Draft" word? When I publish an article, it will be removed or is it permanent?
I'll be glad if you can help me. Bkaratas (talk) 12:22, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bkaratas It's simply because you're a new user. Once you are autoconfirmed you can write in mainspace. But it's a good idea to start the article in draftspace anyway, as because you're new you can get feedback. Please read Wikipedia:Drafts. After four days and ten edits you can move the article to Ömer Faruk Çelik. I'm going to leave a note on your talk page with some advice on editing. Glen 12:28, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glen Thank you kindly :)Bkaratas (talk) 12:36, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bkaratas pleasure, happy editing. Glen 12:38, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glen - Thank you for responding and being so kind and helpful to this new user. I was very pleased with your kindness, level of effort, and your explanation and links to relevant pages. This is the exact kind of attitude, effort, and time that will positively attract new users to edit Wikipedia, keep them as editors long-term, and that I believe the majority of experienced Wikipedia users need to demonstrate and improve on. Thanks again. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:09, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Problem solved!

Hi Oshwah, the problem I sent you email about got solved, thanks to some help I got in IRC. So you don't have to worry about the complicated mess I created, because I learned how to use SD -G7 so I didn't need revdel. Thanks for your help on many other things, not least on recommending IRC for Wikipedia questions! HouseOfChange (talk) 02:27, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HouseOfChange! No worries! I'm happy that you were able to receive help. I'm on IRC pretty much 24/7 in the #wikipedia-en channel, so stop by and say hello! You're always welcome there! Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you need input, help, or advice on anything at all - I'll be happy to lend a hand. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:14, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SpectresWrath, Hello, it will be nice if you put up a discussion on the talk page to establish a consensus before any move. Regards Megan Barris (Lets talk📧) 22:13, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm following the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television)#Season articles so that's why I need help moving it. SpectresWrath (talk) 02:47, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SpectresWrath! Let's create a request here so that it can at least be reviewed and OK'd first. You can cite the naming convention page as the reason, and I'm sure that nobody will object. It's just better to be safe than sorry, and it's the right action to take here. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:16, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wow

Searching up your name on Special:Userlist reveals so much accounts solely meant to mock and attack you. Just, wow. I think you might be tied with Jimbo Wales for "Most targeted user on the English Wikipedia." SuperGoose007 (Honk!) 00:18, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SuperGoose007 - HA! You probably saw this discussion on the admin's noticeboard and checked out the link that someone put in there, am I right? ;-) Not sure if I'm tied with Jimbo Wales, but I'll simply say this: If people were/are resorting to doing that kind of tomfoolery and child-like behavior toward me, then I'm obviously doing my job correctly on this project, and I'm performing the duties and responsibilities that I've been trusted by the community with diligently and to the point where they have to do that stupid stuff. I wish it didn't have to happen, but what you saw was only a small taste compared to the actual amount of harassment, threats, and other bad stuff that administrators and functionaries have to deal with. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:23, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Using IRC

Hello! I want to connect to the Wikipedia IRC network, but I don't want random people finding out what my IP address is. Do you have any suggestions while I am waiting to meet the requirements to get a cloak? SuperGoose007 (Honk!) 02:06, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SuperGoose007 - Getting a cloak may take some time, just be warned. In the meantime, you could use a VPN. Those work by having all of your traffic go through their servers, which in turn will mask your real IP address. Do you have a VPN service or a way to use one? You can simply google that term and you'll find many helpful results. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:25, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Closing time

Hi Oshwah, could you please close this RfC [2]? It's a total deadlock and 1 month has passed. ty, Sadkσ (talk is cheap) 22:16, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sadko - Oh boy... a discussion that's controversial, divided, and large in participation? Dang, I don't mind doing it, but it's going to take awhile to read through everything... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:27, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sadko - Actually, nevermind. This is actually a very easy close. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:31, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sadko -  Done. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:41, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. :) Sadkσ (talk is cheap) 10:17, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sadko - You bet; always happy to help! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:10, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

FTR, your close is weird. You base the "consensus" on some ("much more numerous", you say) non sequitur arguments that are clearly not based on lead or biography guidelines. You say that the ethnicity is significant, but don't explain how is it significant (nobody else did, anyway). In your second to last sentence you state that Tesla identified as a Serb, which is totally irrelevant (his ethnicity is not disputed, but rather it is disputed if the ethnicity should be in the lead according to guidelines). Your last sentence is quite simply bonkers: "numerous previous discussions that reached the same conclusion and with the same arguments". There was no such discussion.

What strikes me as most odd is how you said here that the RfC was a "very easy close". WTF?

Lastly, I don't know if this can be fixed now, but you missed striking through RandomCanadian's vote, even though you did strike his upper-most comment. Notrium (talk) 02:37, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't planned to complain to the closure, but since I noticed this thread, I'll share my two cents. I'm sure some people feel strongly that ethnicity is important. However, finding sources that simply state ethnicity shouldn't be enough to declare it relevant when those sources don't do much more than stating it. In this manner anyone's ethnicity can be put to the lead. Bilseric (talk) 01:53, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Account verification

Please have look at this help desk query where I might need some admin/experienced user help: Wikipedia:Help desk#REPLACING MY PHOTO A user account claims to be Terry Carter but I have no way of verifying the, same even though his edit history indicates so. He is requesting that an image be added to his article (Terry Carter) but reverse image search makes me think that it is already copyrighted. I would appreciate if you (or any of the friendly talk page watchers) could help out and possibly verify his account. Thanks, Field Marshal Aryan (talk) 06:19, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Field Marshal Aryan - Have the user contact the volunteer response team by visiting Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects. They have the tools and training in order to verify this person's identity and assist them with their request. No matter what this user says, shows us, or "proves" - in the end, we cannot truly verify or prove who this user claims to be. Full stop. We should always assume good faith of course, but the assumption of good faith does not mean that we "take one's word for it" and believe that someone is telling the truth regarding their identity. Sure, we can help this user. You gave good advice by telling them to upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons. What worries me is that this user may not understand Wikipedia's policies on copyright, and may find themselves in trouble if they repeatedly violate it. I basically took what I said in this response and added it to the discussion on the helpdesk for you. I hope that it is helpful, and please don't hesitate to let me know if I can help you with anything else. I'll be more than happy to do so. I'd also make sure that he declares a conflict of interest with the article, even if we can't verify this user's real identity. This user obviously has one. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:48, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Field Marshal Aryan - Oh, and regarding the reverse image search you did: If you find that it may be copyrighted, it probably is. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:54, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oshwah, Thanks a lot. You are the best. Regards, Field Marshal Aryan (talk) 06:52, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Field Marshal Aryan - Always happy to lend a hand. ;-) I appreciate the kind words - they mean a lot! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:54, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

i found the image misleading for teenagers as it was a part of nudity in theSex Organ article — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ravinesh rds (talkcontribs) 12:08, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ravinesh rds - Thank you for the explanation. It just seems like you removed a lot of content without a clear reason. Why do you feel that the image was misleading to teenagers? Which image exactly? Why, based on your thoughts, should this be removed from an encyclopedia? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:09, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ravinesh rds Wikipedia is not censored. Praxidicae (talk) 11:37, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ravinesh rds - As Praxidicae stated above, Wikipedia does not censor its content. Information in an encyclopedia is meant to be completely neutral and inclusive of all relevant and encyclopedic material, even if that material may offend a certain audience or group of readers. By removing images that you feel are "misleading to teenagers", you're not improving the encyclopedia by doing this; you're actually hindering information and hurting it. Remember that we're here to build an encyclopedia; we're not here to cater to a specific group or audience, nor be selective with the content that we publish simply because someone feels that it's "inappropriate". The cost that is associated with completely open and neutral content is that some information may be offensive or controversial to some people. However, that's what comes with the freedom of sharing all information. As far as the images go, I'm not going to review or delete any of them. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:38, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

my edit was not vandalism

Hi dear oshwah. I edited home inspection in Iran and you refused, at first i don't know the conditions but at second time i removed the subjects that can be assumed as advertisement. i just mentioned this industry in Iran is activated. i just use a quotation from Doctorsazen manager for telling to the reader the though atmosphere in Iran. is that advertising? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maleki.ah (talkcontribs) 07:45, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Maleki.ah - Your edits to the Home improvement article (here) went into great detail about a specific company, and went into detail about how they were a "pioneer of this job in Iran" and had "mature engineers with good experience in execution that found house market disorganized". This speaks positively about the company in a project where we're supposed to provide neutral encyclopedic content. This violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, and to the point where it appears that the content's intention is to advertise or promote the company. This is why I removed the content and left you a message regarding advertising and possible spam. If this wasn't your intent, please accept my apologies for the assumption; we always try to assume good faith on Wikipedia. This is why I left you a message and simply talked to you about it. Your content goes off the main topic of "home improvement" and focuses positively on a company. Please review the policy pages I provided you, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them. Thank you for the message. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:06, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
thank you in advance oshwah. at first i didnt know the rules, but next i removed the pharses you mentioned and sent it. now i just edited iran category and i want you to look at this and see if it has advertisement content or not. best wishes from damavand mountain
this industry started in early 2018 in iran, but the market has heavy resistance at begining. "at first inspections home owners have heavy guard for accepting an impartial engineer as an inspector. we had cases that home owner beated inspector and send him out" said DoctorSaze manager a home inspector company in iran.
lack of this industry in market caused systematic corruption, and realtors did whatever they wanted. complex judiciary processes of Islamic republic of Iran was another reason that customers welcomed. they prefer to do the right thing and pay much more attention in agreement. legal authorities take long time in Iran for following the cases. consequently investor's money will damage in every small time periods due to Extreme inflation in country.
Iranian people have their special culture of behavior; they often can hardly accept an third person(as specialist) that should obey him/her suggestion. they misunderstand the slogan " money talks". It is not logical to expect breaking this atmosphere in short time. they will soon adopt to this service, just like other developed countries.
home buyer inspection was the first inspection in Iran, but rental inspection also have market. home owners are worried about damaging their house by tenants. This job has just developed its services in Iran for rental houses. but they yet have very hard work for doing this business in Iran. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maleki.ah (talkcontribs) 08:17, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maleki.ah - I understand that you're new, and that's completely okay. Mistakes are a big part of learning, and we try to assume good faith in order to accommodate and help our new users. I understand your thoughts here, but we need to focus on the article subject in a big picture, not focus on one company and their accomplishments in Iran. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:52, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Deletion - Keep/Delete question ?

Hi Oshwah, as you suggested to me earlier how to nominate AFD, i started off with few articles and i have reported them. I saw people comment Delete or Keep but i was confused as to how the decision made or who makes it. Is it like what the majority says in relation to keep or delete comment ? ThankyouKami2018 (talk) 00:46, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kami2018! Great questions! Typically, an administrator will close these kinds of discussions and with the appropriate decision in the closing statement. While administrators will usually close discussions, policy does allow for non-administrator closure in certain situations.
We determine the outcome of all of our discussions by consensus. We do not take the number of "votes" as the deciding factor, but the strength of the arguments themselves. Consensus can be said to have been achieved when a decision is made while addressing all of the legitimate and proper concerns raised. For example: If seven people simply comment "Delete" in a discussion and with weak reasons that do not cite policy or process, and one person supports keeping an article and with a strong argument that cites relevant policy, the closing administrator will certainly rule that the article will be kept. Consensus can be a little bit difficult at first to understand and grasp, but I'm sure you'll understand it after seeing some AFDs and other discussions closed. In fact, you can look at past AFD discussions as well as others if you'd like to gain a good grasp of the concept.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding consensus, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:24, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

need help

Hello sir. A user named Drat8sub is not assuming good faith with me and always argues. also wrote some insulting stuff, gaming the system and in return accuses me of gaming. and threatens of going to ANI. while in a discussion, drags me personally, without discussing politely, argues. i have some evidences. i am fed up with this guy. Examples-

I have tried to maintain a happy environment all the time. but he went toxic. my whole day gets wasted with all these issue created by him. Sir, I just need a small help/suggestion. what to do, and how to get rid of this? thanks. ❯❯❯   S A H A 05:59, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ArnabSaha, I'll be happy to try and sort this out and see what's going on. Drat8sub - Can you please respond to the complaint brought to my attention above? I agree that many of the edit summaries you've made have been uncivil, and I'd like to resolve this matter between the two of you. Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:24, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oshwah, the user has been warned appropriately for the mistakes he has done, but still to harass me he just brought this to you. I can't believe this is happening. Complaining about 8 months old thing is itself a harassment to me when the line is very clearly drawn for where he was doing the mistakes, for this I need to revisit all history. It's a wastage of my time and your time too. Still, respecting your request I am trying to recollect.
And, it is not that the user is new to wikipedia and not aware of guidelines of RS or the importance of citation or the 3RR. I warned him previously here for another article with another editor for edit war. Warning for persistently addition of unreliable sources where they accepted, and again warned for adding unreliable sources and failing to understand notability guidelines in another article [4] by another editor. This has been persistent in various occassion, if you go through user's edit history. After all these no editor will suppose to assume good faith in any way.
  • Case 2:
    • I said "may be violating", it's not accusation but the pattern evidently seem it could be the case as there are ample evidence of it, that section was first added by the user
    • 1
    • 2,
    • 3 again they restored
    • 4 then finally restored by the IP which I've assume to be sockpt of the user.
So it seems like a sock to me. I don't wanted at that point to open an investigation because, wanted to give a chance through pointing out policies. And actually it worked after that it had stopped.
  • Case 3: Only they knows what they are trying to establish by saying "tone". It seems like they just collected every bit of pieces they could to harass me.
  • Case 4:This one is classic case of harassment in itself. This is where the real harassment starts I think. First the user accused and trying to provoke me calling me "Mohun Bagan supporter/spokesperson/fan"
    • here and gone an extra mile to add "blindly" support MB here : Warned not to do the same again to harass or responding to tone. Now is this first time they did such? No, they accused everytime they had a difference of opinion, like this
    • here or
    • here calling me "acting as a spokesperson of Mohun Bagan" among several other bad faith commentaries. And they did not stop here, even after pointing out the policies to them here, but instead using bad faith commentary "not to speak" here. So, ANI at this case become very evident after all these violation still they should be thankful I did not and should have taken this as warning.
    • But they have not stopped here, when they were warned here, instead of accepting their failure to understand guidelines and violation, they were in complete denial mode and telling same sympathy gaining story...I am doing good and I am peaceful.
    • Above that in the concerned article they failed to understand policies like owning article, while doing edit warring persistently in this article too for which warned here. But stil in denial when the 3RR violation was in clear line.

Drat8sub, "Complaining about 8 months old thing" didnt u complain about a november issue? at first check urself. i never wanted to complain, but I had to do, because u did. "websites like I League website" at that time i-league website wasnt updated, and showed previous season data. "This one is classic case of harassment in itself" didnt u threaten of going to ANI and sock? an in the most recent discussion, why did u drag me personally? i wrote my opinion, did i tag u? but why u personally attacked me? "Above that in the concerned article they failed to understand policies" just like u assume good faith policy and NPOV policy. u were told multiple times to follow agf and npov, but u were gaming the system and shouting. "Above that in the concerned article they failed to understand policies like owning article" i never said, i own the article. dont false accuse. "But stil in denial when the 3RR violation was in clear line." i reverted just thrice. and it was a issue with 2 editors. one of them had misunderstanding. "I don't wanted at that point to open an investigation because" u cant even open because u r false accusing. I stopped in the 3rd because of the policy, and a discussion started. Facebook source it can be used as per WP:FACEBOOK, if its an official handle. and i cited the same. well, u didnt revert the mohunbagans home stadium data. it was unsourced too. (violation of NPOV again) "with adding more unsourced contents" none of them were unsourced. the stadium tables hardly contain any source, so i added the link in the infobox. and in the very next edit i added source. "bad faith commentary" a bad faith commentator speaking about it. its funny, tbh. "instead of accepting their failure to understand guidelines and violation" i did accept. cant help if u cant see. "sympathy gaining story" my account, my internet, i will decide what will i write. u simply cant assume anything. till date u didnt give any proper reason, why u removed Template:Fb a header. u were toxic, and reply in a demeaning way. "Finally, its exhausting and total harassment for me to point out everytime all these page history." then why did u drag me in personnally? ❯❯❯   S A H A 07:04, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I'm here to support adminstration. I'm Donald pack. If a user disturpt Wikipedia I'm blocking them. Even if I don't have the attorney to that. But I'm still helping out — Preceding unsigned comment added by Donald pack (talkcontribs) 23:39, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Donald pack, and welcome to Wikipedia! You don't have to be an administrator in order to patrol recent changes, revert vandalism, and warn users for their behavior. That's what I started doing when I was new and wanting to get involved with Wikipedia and how to improve the project. I was amazed that this was something that anybody could do, and it's been a task that I've been doing for going on 12 years now. Consider getting involved with doing this; it sounds like something you'd enjoy doing. :-) Please let me know if I can answer any questions or help you with anything, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Again, welcome! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:56, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Hope your well, I just wrote my first Bio for an Artist, could you please help on how I can get this back without it being deleted.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emporia Music Producer (talkcontribs) 01:26, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Emporia Music Producer - It appears that you were attempting to write a bio about yourself. Is this correct? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:43, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Emporia Music Producer - You said above that both yourself and your manager have accounts, and you both appear to be creating pages about the same person... This usually means that there's a reason for doing this that doesn't benefit the project directly. What is it that you're trying to do exactly? What are you trying to accomplish? I'll be happy to help so long as Wikipedia's policies and guidelines are followed, such as this one and this one. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:47, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Viking Web Scanner blocks

Hi, Oshwah. I think you made a mistake in putting a soft block on Viking Web Scanner and Viking Web Scanner 12. When a brand new account makes precisely 10 trivial edits in user space, such as adding 2 characters at a time to a sandbox, and then stops, it is obvious they are trying to become autoconfirmed, usually to evade semiprotection on some page, occasionally for other purposes, such as creating a spam article without having to go through AfC. I think the best way to handle that is to make a note to check on the account after 4 days when it becomes autoconfirmed, and then consider what action, if any, is suitable. Giving the account a soft block positively encourages them to do the same with a new account under a totally different name, so that we can't watch out for it.

What do you say to removing the blocks? It may by now be too late, if the person has already seen the blocks, but it may not, and it seems to me to be worth a try. JBW (talk) 08:24, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

When I posted the above message, I knew that Viking Web Scanner had made precisely 10 edits, all within a few minute, stopping quite a while before you blocked, and I mistakenly thought that Viking Web Scanner had done the same. I have now seen that Viking Web Scanner 12 was editing up to a few minutes before the block, which unfortunately increases the likelihood that they saw the block and moved to another account. Nevertheless, I still suggest we remove the blocks, as it may help, and is virtually certain to at the worst do no harm. JBW (talk) 08:32, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JBW! Thanks for the message. Did you see that another account, Ruthless Web Scanner, was also created? The reason I blocked was because I had seen these accounts, and noticed that they were each making meaningless edits to their own sandbox in order to become autoconfirmed (as you stated). Nonetheless, I trust your judgment and I will unblock the accounts. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:25, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. I've unblocked the accounts. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:28, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  1. No, I hadn't seen Ruthless Web Scanner.
  2. The fact that the Ruthless Web Scanner account was created shortly after you blocked the others suggests that the editor had seen the blocks and was indeed trying to evade them, as I suggested.
  3. On the other hand, if that is so then the fact that the person chose a new user name so closely related to the names of the blocked accounts suggests a certain lack of skill at avoiding scrutiny, which is obviously a good thing.
  4. I see you also blocked Furious Web Scanner. JBW (talk) 16:27, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
JBW - Oops, I meant to unblock that account alongside the others. I've unblocked it now. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:09, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
JBW - Just found another one doing the exact same thing... NordacatVerisign. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:39, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like these accounts are related to WP:Sockpuppet investigations/FFS19/Archive. They create a new account, create blank user and talk pages then just add and remove a single letter or so several times in their sandbox to reach 10 edits. Pinging @JBW: as well. Ravinesh rds - As I said above, while these images may certainly offend or disturb you, they are fit for an encyclopedia and are being used in relevant articles. Wikipedia is not censored, and we publish and provide articles and content on any and every article subject - even those that are contentious in nature. That's the premise behind an encyclopedia - to provide knowledge and content with any subject that the reader seeks to learn about. I understand that you have concerns regarding the portrayal of sex and doing so in a way that you feel is morale, but Wikipedia and its articles is not the place to exert these feelings. We have policies and guidelines that must be followed, with one being that we write articles and content to reflect a neutral point of view. We don't write articles to reflect your thoughts and point-of-view, nor do we write articles to reflect mine, or someone else's. It means that we write it to support neutrality. Removing images that are being used to add encyclopedic value to articles is disruptive to the project. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Thank you - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:54, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The scenarios you lay out above assume, as a baseline, that a parent is not doing their job and just letting the Internet babysit for them. The surest way to stop those scenarios is to actively parent. Install filters on your computer and make it a hassle to bypass them. Monitor your kids' internet usage. Limit Internet access, if need be. Anything less is dereliction of your duty as a parent. —A little blue Bori v^_^v 2020's a bust; thanks SARS-CoV-2 20:24, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Hi, Ravinesh rds. Just wanted to let you know that there are measures within Wikipedia that can prevent wrong exposure to children. You might want to read them. Thanks, Field Marshal Aryan (talk) 21:00, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ravinesh rds, your edits to Naturism and Topfreedom were completely contrary to your stated intention above, in that the edits distorted the presentation of almost all the images even though they are not of a sexual nature. A responsible parent is not going to make a song and dance about the fact that people have bodies. Nudity is not the same as sexuality, nudist communities have very few cases of sexual assault (as you will know if you have read the article, and especially the sources that the article links to), and a child is not going to understand that a picture of a bare-chested woman walking on a beach could be inappropriate unless they are told that it is – and even then, they won't understand why. To a normal kid, pictures of regular nude people are exactly as pornographic as a picture of a pair of shoes, or a picture of a blue sky with clouds on it. And as for teenagers who (unlike most children) are often interested in sex and sexuality, it is even more important to present a healthy view of human bodies, such as is presented in those two articles. Articles about explicitly sexual topics are not written for children, so that's not a problem. (I agree that a few of the pictures you linked to above are not particularly pleasant to view, but I wonder why you linked to a bunch of contextless images where several are not even used on English Wikipedia, unless your purpose was to get more viewers to those pictures. Congratulations, I guess?) --bonadea contributions talk 21:47, 14 July 2020 (UTC):::[reply]

Ravinesh rds - I know that you had good intentions with what you were trying to do. Nobody here believes that you were acting in bad faith at all. Our policy is that we assume good faith in cases where the intent may not be clear. However, even good-faith edits can be disruptive to the project and what we're trying to do, and those who are made aware of their edits being disruptive are expected to cease the behavior. I understand your thoughts and beliefs, but these images add encyclopedic value to the articles that they're being used on. If you have further concerns about the images, the best thing to do is start a discussion on the article's talk page and propose taking the image off. If others in the community agree and come to a consensus that the image does not add encyclopedic value, it can be removed from the article at that time. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:39, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the time of this writing, I have 1060 users who have this page on their active watchlist, meaning that they get notified as soon as someone edits this page. Adding these messages publicly will result in the Streisand effect, as many people will see the message and then rush over to view the revision before they lose the ability to see it. Hi UnicornSpa. What you did by adding a "joke" to the article is considered a personal attack, which is not allowed on Wikipedia and will result in your account being blocked from editing should this be repeated. The article wasn't "mine"; nobody owns content on Wikipedia. This means that anyone can edit Wikipedia, and you don't have to "ask permission" to improve an article. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; we don't have our own "pages" here, and we don't get to create pages on just anything we want. You should go through and complete the new user tutorial; it will teach you about how Wikipedia works and how you can actually help contribute and improve the project. Please let me know if you have any questions after completing that tutorial, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:06, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Editing of Canis Major and minor cobsyellation pages

Hello! I recently tried to add to Canis Major and minor wiki pages but my changes have been reverted. I have mentioned the reference for my edit. Is it not enough?

Hi Gauri a11! Your edits were probably reverted because you only mentioned the existence of some source out there. You didn't actually link to any source or provide the reader with information regarding how to find it (ISBN for a book? Publishing information for media?). I'd take some time and review Wikipedia's pages on citing sources and what constitutes as reliable sources. These pages will answer your questions and help you. Hi Martin2707! I'm not quite sure that I understand what you're looking to edit, but if I understand correctly, you're looking to edit the Ted Lasso (TV series) article, and upload some images to Wikipedia. That article is not protected; you should have no issues with editing it. You won't be able to upload any images to Wikipedia until your account becomes confirmed or auto-confirmed, which requires your account to be 4 days old and have made at least 10 edits. After these conditions are met, you'll be able to upload images. Just make sure that you review and understand Wikipedia's copyright policy and image use policy before you upload any images. Violating these policies can be serious, and lead to being blocked from editing should you repeatedly violate them. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:32, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ed6767! It's been quite some time since we've last spoken! I appreciate the very kind words, and they mean a lot to me - thank you. How've you been? I hope you're doing well despite the pandemic and these crazy times... Luckily, I live in an area where the number of cases are comparatively very low. I only know of one friend who tested positive (and recovered without much issue), and everyone I work with and interact with on a daily basis have been keeping healthy. It's a serious virus that nobody should mess around with (and unfortunately, if you've seen the news stories about the US and all of the parties, crowded bars, and people who carelessly don't follow ordnance - people have been messing with it), but I'm fortunate to be able to say that, other than having to remember a mask when I go out to the store, and not being able to get out and socialize nearly as much as I'd like to, the pandemic hasn't personally affected me very much. I hope the same applies to you as well. Be safe, keep healthy, and take care of yourself. And keep in touch! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:47, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oshwah, it's no problem - I'm good, times are quite weird down here, and I think I'm pretty lucky living in a fairly unaffected area too. It's mainly my relatives that are of the most concern to me here, especially their closeness to London. Most people here wear a mask, even the dodgier types. I'm currently just reading and looking into Wikipedia more to become even more familiar with how things work around here. Thanks for your kind response :) Ed talk! 18:38, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767 - We're glad to have you here! I started on Wikipedia 13 years ago when I was in High School and when all I wanted to do was cause trouble. I figured that if I just make sneaky vandalism that was hard to detect or be seen as obvious, I'd get away with it. Nonetheless, when I learned that non-administrators - pretty much any user - had the power to revert edits, warn users, and participate in cleaning up the website, it surprised and fascinated me! It wasn't long at all before I switched sides and started cleaning up the same sneaky vandalism that I was trying to add here.
Many editors don't believe me when I say that I started here as a vandal, but it's true - look at my contributions. :-) My very first edits were obviously intended to be disruptive. ;-) I hope that you stay with us, keep building your knowledge and participation here, and grow into a knowledgeable and experienced editor. When I was sitting in the library at my High School signing up for an account so that I could be a troll here, I never imagined that I'd still be here, 13 years later, and be where I am with the community today. If you find a project or activity here that you enjoy doing, similar to what like I enjoy doing when I patrol for vandalism, you'll have a lot of fun, and you'll grow to be a significant part of one of the most visited websites in the world.
Keep in touch, and I hope I continue to see you around here! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:09, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help with new editor

Hi Osh, hope all is going well! I don't know how busy you are so if this is too much absolutely no worries – I've been trying to work with a new editor (Mohd.maaz864) who I don't seem to be getting through to. The user has a habit of leaving messages like Talk:Al_Jazeera#The_Guardian®'s_report_on_a_memo and I am out of ideas on how to help and these kinds of edits have continued. I deeply admire your approach to working with new editors – would you mind looking at this and seeing if you could chat with the user? I would be endlessly grateful Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 07:27, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi L235! I'm so sorry for the late response to your request here. I would've been more than happy to help had I not been busy and had seen this much sooner. It looks like this user was blocked for WP:NOTHERE. What ended up happening that caused the decision to block the user? I'm sorry man... I wish I could've helped... :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:46, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, no worries! I'd come across the user's prior block history and advice previously, and decided that an ANI thread was appropriate due to the long-term disruption (Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1043 § Mohd.maaz864). Admins at ANI decided to block, which makes sense in light of the history and seems to be confirmed by the user's post-block actions. Unfortunately I imagine that the disruption would just have continued without a block, regardless of the counseling/warning that was attempted. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 17:12, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
L235 - Well, then it sounds like the right action was taken. Otherwise, we'd all just be wasting our time just for the inevitable to happen. Glad to hear that the issue was handled. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:40, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting an appeal to my Topic Ban in the ARBPIA area

This notice comes to inform you that I have submitted sn appeal to my Topic ban in the ARBPIA area, which you can see here. Questions about a puzzling pattern of edits

This morning I ran across a surprising AfD, that turned out to be one of a trio of malformed AfDs filed by the same user Feloniii.

Atlantic306, ‎Praxidicae, and I all messaged him about the AfD problems on his talk page, but he deleted our comments (as is his right.) His AfD for Keren Bergman was SKed, and the other two are getting unanimous K !votes, so that's not the problem now.

I went to his contributions to see if he had AfDed other notable women, and what I found was unusual enough that I want your advice. The "Feloniii" account was created in 2017 by somebody experienced enough that the first two edits were moving scripts to common.js. The account lay unused from June 2018 to June 2020, when Feloniii started adding short descriptions to many articles. Having reached 2000 edits, Felonii on July 30 asked to become a Pending Changes Reviewer, which Anarchyte refused, pointing out that the great bulk of those 2000 edits are just shortdesc helper.

Also on July 30, Felonii started some non-shortdesc edits -- like this for example -- eventually AfDing 3 articles and defending his actions.

I know I should AGF but it just feels that something funny is going on here. But I could be wrong, and I welcome your advice. HouseOfChange (talk) 20:36, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update, Aranya has filed a sockpuppet investigation of Feloniii, so that may explain the puzzling behavior. 19:40, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
HouseOfChange - Interesting... Let me know how the SPI goes and if I can help with anything. I'll be happy to do so. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:51, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Any good proxies?

Oshwah, do you know about any good proxies that I can use for IRC? SuperGoose007 (Honk!) 18:02, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SuperGoose007! Are you perhaps referring to an IRC bouncer? I personally don't use one, but I know many that do. They typically use ZNC as their bouncer (just google it - you'll find it). You can also refer to this resource for a list of good bouncers, software, and other tools. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:49, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have there been any major incidents where a Wikipedian had been DDoS'd while using IRC? SuperGoose007 (Honk!) 19:32, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
SuperGoose007 - Not that I'm aware of, but trolls will be trolls, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's happened before. If having your real IP address displayed on IRC is a concern for you, I'd either use a VPN before connecting, or consider applying for a cloak. I use a cloak on Wikipedia's freenode servers, which hides your IP address when you connect and disconnect. I would apply for a cloak and use it - it's the best way to hide your IP address, and limit your risk of forgetting to connect through your VPN and accidentally exposing your IP address when you connect. Keep in mind that I've heard that the application process can take quite some time - I think someone said that it was over a month until they received one after applying. I'd apply now so that you can get yourself started with that process. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions, and I'll be happy to do so. I'll be great to see you on there! :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:51, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

USS Franklin (CV-13)

Hi Osh, can you look at USS Franklin (CV-13), and see about some semi-protection? An IP hopper keeps making changes to cited text based on original research, and refuses to cite reliable sources. In addition, its latest summary is a bit offensive, but not worthy of a revdel. BilCat (talk) 22:53, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BilCat! I have a much easier solution than protecting the article - I went ahead and blocked 2A02:8108:49BF:F01C::/64 for one week. That should stop the IP hopping and the addition of poorly sourced content to the article. Let me know if he pops up again and I'll be happy to take care of it. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:55, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and no problem. I've found it's usually best to ask for article protection, and let the admin apply another solution if it's warranted. :) BilCat (talk) 23:00, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
BilCat - Heh, that works too. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:01, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Herbert Hoover

Hi, a request has been made at WP:RFPP, but could you please go ahead and semi-protect Herbert Hoover? The page has been viciously attacked with IP-hopping vandalism and the previous protection, which was one year in length, expired a very short time ago. The page, which has been vandalized consistently for more than a year despite multiple protections, is currently pending changes protected but given the vandalism I don't think PC will work. Indefinite protection may be called for. Joshonian (talk) 02:37, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Want to write about a person Named Bibhuti B Jha Prominent editor Jhaji Bhagalpur wale (talk) 04:53, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jhaji Bhagalpur wale! Thanks for leaving me a message here. A page that will help you with this is Wikipedia's my first article help page. I would use the articles for creation process, as it will allow you to create an article in the draft space. This will allow you all the time that you need to expand the article and finish it, then have a reviewer assist you and move the article into the mainspace (where articles are located). Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many important walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if you have any questions after reading through those help pages, and I'll be happy to help you. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:22, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Germantown, MD wiki entry without source

Hello, Oshwah!

In relation to the "Germantown Maryland" page under "Expansion," (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Germantown,_Maryland&oldid=971919571) I did mean to have a entry without a source, I was having problems with the link working. I was using the sourse: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/military/vietnam-war/casualty-lists/md-alpha.pdf by the United States Archives on page 47 and 53. Is this source and what I added to the wiki to your liking?

Have a good day or night, "A cats paw" (talk) 13:37, 9 August 2020 (UTC)"A cats paw"[reply]

"A cats paw" - At first glance, I don't see any red flags with the reference. This content guideline page will provide you with help and instructions on how to cite your source. Please let me know if you have any questions after reading thought it, and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for the message and for letting me know about the edit. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:32, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, again!
I have reviewed the article, and I have figured out my mistake. I apologize, I am very new to Wikipedia. What should I do now? Attempt to edit the page again with a correct source, or is there another way?
Thank you,
"A cats paw" (talk) 19:52, 9 August 2020 (UTC)"a cat's paw"[reply]
Hi "A cats paw"! No worries; I understand that you're new, and mistakes are going to be completely expected. We assume good faith on Wikipedia - especially with new users. Sure, go ahead and edit the article again and add the content with your reference. Include an explanation in the edit summary. Let me know if you continue to have any issues. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:14, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Oshwah. There seems to be a dispute at South Park, as Dan Wescher insists on making nonconsensual changes to the introduction. On the article's talk page and edit summaries, he repeatedly claims that he does not understand WP:CON, ignores, mocks, and posts other nonsense on my own talk page such as this. Regards, QuestFour (talk) 18:02, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi QuestFour! Thanks for leaving me a message regarding the ongoing issues on the South Park article. I'll start a discussion on the article's talk page and ping you both in it so that you two can participate. Just remember to be careful; the edit history of this article shows that between July 20 - July 25, you and Dan Wescher were engaging in edit warring by reverting each other in a back-and-forth manner. Keep note that the three-revert rule is a bright-line rule; it doesn't define edit warring and when someone has or has not engaged in that behavior at all - it's a rule that provides users with a line that, when crossed, will almost certainly be handled as edit warring in nearly all cases. I just don't want to see you get sucked into that pitfall and get blocked for it. ;-) Keep a look out for a ping notification soon. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:48, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The post here

Quick thing, I never made this edit, so it may have been from a VPN. I'm notifying you this since I have a Wikipedia account and I don't want anyone who check IPs to assume I was the vandal. 67.80.180.218 (talk) 00:34, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thanks for letting me know. I recommend using your account to edit Wikipedia, as you won't run into any issues with edits made using your current IP address that weren't made by you. This is a common occurrence - especially for public or shared networks, or IP addresses that switch hands often (DHCP or dynamic assignment). Just disregard the warning if it wasn't you. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:17, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What`s the censorship?

Слыш, мандаWOSHка соронбаевская, ты зачем запретил свободное редактирование COVID-19 pandemic in Kyrgyzstan? Что, правда не нравится, мразь ГэБэшная? Мало людей загубили за прошлый месяц? 185.66.253.38 (talk) 17:58, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I'll do my best to respond from what I translated from your message. Nobody is "banned" from editing the COVID-19 pandemic in Kyrgyzstan article. The article is simply semi-protected from editing, meaning that editing is restricted from users who do not have a Wikipedia account or users who have an account that isn't confirmed or auto-confirmed. Instead, you just need to make an edit request on the article's talk page and describe exactly what needs to be changed, where, and what it should be changed to. Another Wikipedia editor will review your request and make the appropriate changes for you (assuming no issues are found). Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:43, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "Domain_hack" wiki-page

Hi Oshwah,

I just received a message saying my edit of the wikipage "Domain_hack" was reverted because it contained a suspicious link.

The edit that I submitted was:

"On the 8th April 2020, a new hobbyist website, Nami.ng was launched - listing short single-word domain hacks currently in personal or business use, as well as those used either for redirection, or as a domain shortener by larger corporations.

Alex
