Bismark - disengage vs retreat
Hi Parsecboy
Apologies, no discourtesy was intended. I was not expecting comment to revert without an opportunity to revise the reason for the edit in the comments section.
Couple of reasons for the change from retreat to disengage. Firstly one tends to retreat after a defeat and then leaves the field of battle, whereas disengeging is a temporary withdrawl prior to returning to the fight as was the case with Prince of Wales.
Secondly and more importantly the phrase used in the article is that Captain Leach 'gave the order to retreat' in other words used the word 'retreat' in instructing the crew. In reality regardless of the situation no Royal Navy captain or other English speaking naval officer (at sea rather than in a land engagement) would use the specific word 'retreat' when wanting to break of the action. Basically it is not colloquial English. The actual order would be to disengage, retire, withdraw or some other instruction involving course directions. NB262 (talk) 17:15, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- This should be discussed on the article talk page, not on one of our talk pages, so other editors can see it and participate. Parsecboy (talk) 17:19, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
DYK for French ironclad Hoche
On 24 April 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article French ironclad Hoche, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the French ironclad Hoche (pictured) had such a large superstructure that she was nicknamed "le Grand Hôtel"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/French ironclad Hoche. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, French ironclad Hoche), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

The 50,000 Destubbing Challenge
- Hey mate, I hope you're well like me. You may or may not intressesed in this project, but even though you may not be part of the challenge you always can add your comming destubs in their list. This might be intresting for them to see how many stub warships would be destubed? I also believe we are too far from saying "we have destubed all the warships"? You even may win some prices to buy new books related to warships. ;) Cheers. CPA-5 (talk) 21:47, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Italian ironclad Re d'Italia
There is a possibility that the date of her launch is wrong. The Morning Post of 8 January 1864, p5 states "New York, December 30 (Morning)... ...The Italian frigate Re d'Italia, built in New York, went ashore yesterday near Long Branch during her trial trip, and has not yet got off, though great efforts are being made to save her."
Is it possible that she was launched a year earlier than stated in the article? Mjroots (talk) 12:15, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- I can't imagine that she was - that'd be a build time of just 6 months, which seems rather unlikely. But it's probable that she was ready for trials earlier in 1864 than the completed date we have (which might have been the date the ship was ready to be handed over to the Regia Marina, after repairs from the grounding accident. Russian ship Trekh Ierarkhov (1838)
Hi Parsecboy, first, you may find someone telling you, as they told me, that if you use a WP:CS1 or WP:CS2 template citation, the sfp short citation style will now put the article on a list of citation errors. WP is apparently moving to Harvard-style citations, which include the year. Second, did you not wonder why I went to the trouble of changing Sozaev & Tredrea to Tredrea & Sozaev? For a long time I too thought it was Sozaev & Tredrea, but then I looked up the book and saw that the dust jacket lists the authors as Tredrea & Sozaev. The copyright notice also gives the authors names in that order. I therefore took that as pretty definitive. Your mileage clearly differs, but what I did was not arbitrary or capricious. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 11:58, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- I think you misunderstand what's going on; the templates were updated to automatically generate a Harvard anchor, but that doesn't mean anyone needs to use them (or that they're visible to anyone who isn't using one of the harv errors scripts. There's no reason to change the citation style in an article. But you are right on the order of the authors - I had been going by the order listed in Worldcat. I'll fix the article. Naval battles of the New Georgia campaign
G'day, Nate, I hope you and your family are well. I have recently been trying to expand the individual battle articles relating to the New Georgia campaign. I am pretty much done with most of the land battles now, with Nick helping me with the New Georgia counterattack article, but there are still a few to do in relation to the naval battles. I have reworked and expanded the Battle of Kolombangara article, and started citing the Battle of Blackett Strait and Battle off Horaniu articles, but naval history isn't my strong suit. I was wondering if you might be keen for a collaboration on these? Is there anything glaring I've missed with Kolombangara? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 11:22, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi AR - I was actually thinking of working on some of these as part of a long-term project on the battles (and ships) of the Solomons campaigns. I'd be happy to work with you on them (I'm winding up this project and could use a bit of a palate cleanser - I've been working on French ships for a few months now!) Parsecboy (talk) 17:03, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Cheers, Nate, that looks like a epic body of work. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 10:31, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

SMS Derfflinger scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the SMS Derfflinger article has been scheduled as today's featured article for July 17, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 17, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:51, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jim - this will need a bit of dusting off before it runs, but there's plenty of time to get that done. Parsecboy (talk) 11:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- Today, thank you for the article, and the dusting, and the continued flow of GAs. - What do you think about this FTN (also in memory)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:48, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- Every once in a while, I have a TFA as well, happy that it was also a tribute to Brian, in great collaboration, fine Main page, and see also. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:32, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- Congrats, Gerda! I had missed it on the main page when it ran (I don't frequently go there in the course of regular editing). Parsecboy (talk) 14:38, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

changes
The auto ed user script does what it does -- and I check to make sure no errors are caused. With MS Kaiser Friedrich III it added spaces in the bullet list, which complies with WP:BULLETLIST. (I believe the spaces are in bullet and # lists to assist editors with poor vision. If I am correct, the spaces are not cosmetic.) In any event, "Keep in mind that reverting a cosmetic edit is also a cosmetic edit." (WP:COSMETICBOT) Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 18:12, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- Nothing in BULLETLIST instructs editors to use a space, and the rendered list is identical. It's a cosmetic edit. You were warned about these types of edits just a month ago. Why are is this still an issue?
- I am well aware of that line in COSMETICBOT, but there is a difference between you doing this to multiple articles with automated tools and me reverting a single edit to draw your attention to it. Parsecboy (talk) 09:14, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

The fact was ... that the French cruisers Pascal (pictured), Descartes, Bugeaud, and Chasseloup-Laubat were deployed to East Asia as part of France's response to the Boxer Uprising in Qing China? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, French cruiser Chasseloup-Laubat), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Bombardment of Casablanca (1907)
That's a real article and lists the ships that were involved in one form or another. There were a bunch of armored cruisers involved which I'm looking through Roche to confirm, but also a couple of smaller cruisers. You caught one of them since it's passingly mentioned in Conways, but there are a couple of others. The attack isn't mentioned in any of Jordan's articles or in Caresse's articles for some reason. Shame, maybe? You might want to hunt through Brasseys for any info as well.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:38, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip - I don't recall seeing anything about it in Brassey's, but I wonder if the RUSI journal might have details? I'll have to see what I can dig up. And yeah, that is a curious omission on Jordan & Caresse's parts. Parsecboy (talk) 18:26, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Cornwallis
Paragraph was needed because it's a change in subject, and an important one, too, introducing her sinking by U-32. Referencing could be adjusted. TNX. – Sca (talk) 13:28, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- I don't agree; one doesn't structure paragraphs in a narrative as one would in a high school paper. One could just as easily make the case that the paragraph ought to be split after the sentence before, since the first two lines cover operations on the East Indies Station and the rest cover operations in the Mediterranean. Or that the first three lines all should be their own paragraphs, since they all cover different subjects (i.e., the ship's stint on the Suez Patrol, then the East Indies Station, and then the return to the Med). Parsecboy (talk) 13:47, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- The sinking of this battleship by a U-boat is a vital part of the ship's story, and really should have its own subhead. Conflating the sinking narratively with the previous "Later operations" section (a sort of non-title) has the effect of burying it in unrelated text.
- I know you've done a great deal of work on these articles, which I respect, but I'm surprised you don't see the need for a textual break here. Also, "as in a high school paper" sounds distinctly snide. (FYI, my personal qualifications include decades of writing and editing for newspapers and the AP, along with a lifetime of reading about the world wars.)
- No one 'owns' an article on Wikipedia. But I've no interest in edit-warring this issue. I was only improving the product – or trying to. 'Bye. – Sca (talk) 14:18, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Access to non-notable articles
I have talked to another administrator willing to provide copies of deleted articles. She does not seem to understand my proposal.
Wikipedia:Viewing deleted content only adduces legal concerns that do not relate to notability. I would like to develop a system that allows any user to access non-notable articles. Could you create Wikipedia:List of non-notable articles or Wikipedia:List of articles about non-notable topics and let me develop the system? Otherwise, would you agree to such project page to be created by a regular user? 84.120.7.178 (talk) 21:05, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- The main problem is the scale of the task you're contemplating. It would probably be several full-time jobs to go through every article that's ever been deleted on notability grounds, not to mention keep up with it on a daily basis. I, for one, don't have that kind of time. And if the purpose is to provide the deleted text to non-admins (as opposed to a simple listing of titles), you're talking about an enormous amount of material that would likely require hundreds, if not thousands, of sub-lists to keep the size within manageable limits. Frankly, I don't think there's much of a hope of doing this. Parsecboy (talk) 21:43, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- Please do not focus on feasibility yet, since you too are unable to envision my proposal. It looks like creating an empty project page is too much work for an administrator. Please answer my question: would you agree to such project page to be created by a regular user? 84.120.7.178 (talk) 00:30, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- If you don't think the feasibility of the project you're proposing should be considered, that's a good sign you don't fully understand what you're asking for. I don't really care one way or another if other editors want to take on any project, it's not for me to allow or not; but regular users obviously cannot create the page, since they can't see deleted content. If you want to try to move this forward, it should be discussed in a wider forum, not on an individual admin's talk page. The Village Pump would be the place to start. Parsecboy (talk) 12:13, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I agree, and would also echo what Megalibrarygirl suggested: use a sandbox to demonstrate the proposal and the feasibility. Then you might have more luck in convincing other people that it is something worth looking into. But as Parsecboy has suggested, that is a discussion for a public forum such as the Village pump. Harrias talk 12:16, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- As you know, we were having a discussion in village pump. Would you like to continue here? Otherwise, do you agree with Black Kite's actions? 84.120.7.178 (talk) 19:10, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- I am glad that I cleared up all your concerns and you no longer need to discuss this matter. Thank you. 84.120.7.178 (talk) 20:50, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
USS Washington
Hello Parsecboy,
I just noted, you had reverted my edit on page USS Washington (BB-56), when I put link to my recent article Howard H. J. Benson with comment "generally, consensus is to mention commanders only if they're notable, and Benson, who topped out at Captain, does not appear to be so". I reverted that because I just finished the article of him and he is notable officer from several reasons:
- he was the son of Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral William S. Benson (they are both flag officers which is rare)
- he was the recipient of the Navy Cross, the second highest decorations of the United States Navy for valor in combat
- he was the first commanding officer of USS Washington and led her to first combat patrol
Please check my comments and let me know. I would like to find a compromise.
with regards AntonyZ (talk) 17:43, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- None of those are reasons for notability per WP:MILPEOPLE; can you find reliable sources that discuss him more than in passing? If not, then he's not notable. The article you've created on him appears to be based primarily on the bio the NHHC has on him. While that is a reliable source, it would be hard to argue that an official Navy record is independent of the subject. Parsecboy (talk) 19:25, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- I am sorry, but I do not agree, because if I check requirements on the page you send me (WP:MILPEOPLE), an article already met several requirements (see below) and also I put the sources in the article, where are plenty of mentions of him (book on USS Washington; Naval Herritage History Command etc.) There are also Official Registers of Commissioned Officers of the United States Navy, where you can track all assignments of this officer. There are also several sources confirming he is recipient of the Navy Cross and that he commanded USS Washington. I do not see any reason, why there should not be a mention of him in the article of USS Washington.
- Were awarded their nation's highest award for valour, or were awarded their nation's second-highest award for valour (such as the Navy Cross) multiple times; or HE IS THE RECIPIENT OF THE NAVY CROSS
- Let me point out the relevant detail you're missing: (such as the Navy Cross) multiple times. As far as I can tell, Benson was awarded it once. Hence he does not meet the criteria
- Held a rank considered to be a flag, general or air officer, or their historical equivalents; or HE IS FLAG OFFICER WITH THE RANK OF COMMODORE
- No he isn't; the US Navy considers flag officers to start at Rear Admiral
- Held the top-level military command position of their nation's armed forces (such as Chief of the General Staff), or of a department thereof (such as Chief of Army Staff); or COMMANDED GULF SEA FRONTIER COMMAND or
- Those are not equivalent positions; that line refers to positions such as Chief of Staff of the United States Army, not regional operational commands
- Played an important role in a significant military event such as a major battle or campaign; or COMMANDED USS WASHINGTON IN EARLY ATLANTIC CAMPAIGN
- Washington did little of note during this period; if he had commanded the ship at Guadalcanal, that would be a different story
- Commanded a substantial body of troops in combat (e.g. a capital ship, an army division or higher, a Commonwealth air group, United States air wing, Soviet/Russian aviation division, or other historical air formation of equivalent size, generally two levels above a squadron); or SAME HERE COMMANDED USS WASHINGTON IN EARLY ATLANTIC CAMPAIGN
- Indeed, as above
- Made a material contribution to military science that is indisputably attributed to them; or recommended the combination of the Navigation and Seamanship Departments into one department
- Were the undisputed inventor of a form of military technology which significantly changed the nature of or conduct of war; or
- Were recognized by their peers as an authoritative source on military matters/writing.
Please consider this, I assume there is a reason to mention Howard H. J. Benson as first Commanding officer of USS Washington. Let me know, please. AntonyZ (talk) 19:45, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- Moreover, the more important point you've missed with MILPEOPLE is that these criteria only establish the presumption of notability. The topic still has to pass WP:GNG, and I don't think you have a case here. Parsecboy (talk) 19:53, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- I am sorry, but this looks you only looking for more reasons to not comply. This what you had sent me is very universal/general and you can contradict each article with that. Best thing, which we can do now, is take it for Dispute resolution and other admins will decide. Neither you nor me have a patent for what is right. Can we agree on that? On Dispute resolution? Because this is clearly a Edit Warring. AntonyZ (talk) 20:04, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- On the contrary, it seems you are grasping at whatever meager justifications to sustain the article, in the face of a plain reading of both MILPEOPLE and GNG. Here's the bottom line: you have failed to provide any independent sources that discuss Benson in any depth. He therefore doesn't pass GNG. You are of course free to initiate a dispute resolution request, but I think that will be a waste of both of our time. Parsecboy (talk) 20:10, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- I don't much care if he's mentioned in the article or not, but he clearly fails MILPEOPLE and GNG and your article on him should be sent to WP:Articles for Deletion.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:14, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

- Here's a good example of when a non-notable commander should be mentioned in the text: French battleship Strasbourg. Collinet was the commander of the ship during the British attack on Mers el-Kebir, and he had an active and instrumental role in getting his ship underway to escape. His role is therefore relevant to the history of the ship. Simply having been aboard with a pulse is not good enough. Parsecboy (talk) 20:29, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, I understand and it is good example, Parsecboy. In the end, we are both interested in the Naval history and I am trying to improve that area on Wiki same as you. There is a book, mentioned in the article as a source, where are some other details about Benson's service aboard Washington. If I add some other information on his service during the voyage to Atlantic and his Mentioning in the dispatches by British, is it possible? I am just trying to find some way. AntonyZ (talk) 20:43, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

- It would probably depend on what the material is. Remember that we're writing encyclopedia articles, so excessive detail should be avoided (and the article is already fairly long). - There's a passage on page 10 that undermines the argument for including Benson: "[The XO, WOP Clarke] put the ship in commission, and pretty much ran it for a year...Compared with WOP Clarke, Captain Benson was a doddering old man, far too old, who could in no way keep up with modern developments. WOP Clarke whipped the ship into one of the best, if not the best unit in the fleet." Parsecboy (talk) 20:39, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

This is to let you know that the SMS Dresden (1907) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 5, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 5, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
13:24, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

German cruiser Nürnberg
Hi, have a look at this reference. According to Weal, Wellington bombers also attempted to attack Nürnberg following the torpedo hit on 13 December 1939. The bombers from No. 99 Squadron were intercepted by fighters from II./JG 77. I wonder if this info should be added to the article? Currently only the attack by HMS Ursula is mentioned. Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 17:44, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I'd think so. I had a look at Hildebrand and they don't mention it (but they don't mention Ursula either). Parsecboy (talk) 18:36, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- okay, I added some info, this is also applicable for Leipzig. Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 11:45, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, MB - at some point I'm going to get around to redoing all of the German cruisers with Hildebrand, but I stalled out in the Template:Sclass-s and have been distracted with French cruisers for the last six months or so (there were a lot of them, and the few articles we did have weren't very good) ;) Parsecboy (talk) 11:51, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

SMS Kronprinz Erzherzog Rudolf
G'day Nate, any chance you'd let me co-nom SMS Kronprinz Erzherzog Rudolf at ACR (I appreciate I have done none of the heavy lifting here). I'd like to see her get to FA as part of shifting my Ships of the Royal Yugoslav Navy GT to FT. Thoughts? Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 07:15, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- Sure, that sounds good to me. I just started a few new French cruiser articles last night, and when I do these in batches, I go through the relevant editions of Brassey's (and a couple of other journals) to build up their service histories - I'll look for anything relevant to Kronprinz Erzherzog Rudolf while I'm going through. Parsecboy (talk) 10:15, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- Awesome. Let me know when you're done, and I'll do a quick run through myself for prose and MOS stuff in prep for the nom. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 04:29, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- Y'all're gonna need to reference Freivogel's recent book, the Great War in the Adriatic Sea 1914-1918 before you nominate this article, 'cause it's the most thorough account I've seen yet about the actions of the individual ships. Very aggravatingly, it's unindexed, but it is broken into thematic sections, so it's not quite as much hassle to thumb through as it otherwise would be. It should be consulted for all articles on ships that served in the Adriatic during the war.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 15:37, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks Sturm, will take a look, I'm sure some of my A-H/Yugoslav ships will need a refresh. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 22:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
- I expect that you're right. I haven't had it very long, and didn't want to derail any noms before you had a chance to get it.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 23:22, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Your deletes here. The source was the image, which contains further references. So why are you deleting truth for falsity? What was your reason for deleting the image? Broichmore (talk) 12:26, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- We can't use a photo as a source, we need a reliable secondary source for material. Also, there's no room for the photo there without sandwiching text, which should be avoided per the image policy. Parsecboy (talk) 12:33, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- What policy? You mean advice? Advice isn't policy. Rather than deleting factual stuff put in by newbies, or lazy editors why not show them how it's done, by putting in one more percent effort by putting a reference in. I don't get it we're in the role of educators here, not just casual deletionists. Broichmore (talk) 13:09, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Me finding a reliable source for material you want to add is not 1% more work for me. Also, MOS:IMAGELOC is part of the MOS, not just "advice"; the article is Featured, and I'm not going to permit "lazy editors" degrade the quality because they don't care to put in the work necessary to maintain its quality.
