TV Infobox Broken

Can someone fix whatever is wrong with the Infobox TV? It gives the error Lua error in Module:Infobox_television at line 106: bad argument #1 to 'find' (string expected, got nil). It also has the same error message in the infobox itself, however there it says to match rather than to find, and line 284 rather than line 106 Danstarr69 (talk) 13:33, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Danstarr69 Welcome to the Teahouse! Are you referring to Template:Infobox television? Where are you seeing the errors? GoingBatty (talk) 13:55, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty Whenever I try to put the template on an article, whether as a shortcut, or the entire text, those errors appear. Danstarr69 (talk) 14:14, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danstarr69 What is the name of the article where you are trying to add the template? GoingBatty (talk) 14:15, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty it's got nothing to do with the article. The TV template is broke. I tried to add the entire template text last night (when I was half asleep) to a rough stub article I was thinking about creating, like I usually do when I add templates. However after adding the release date, I noticed the errors so I thought I must have done something wrong. Then I deleted the date, and the errors were still there. Then I blanked the page, and added the shortcut instead, and the errors were still there. Today, I've just started a draft for a random article which doesn't exist, and tried again to post the template, but again those errors are still there. I suspect it's something to do with the edits on the template in March and April. Danstarr69 (talk) 14:25, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danstarr69 I just pasted the whole template to User:GoingBatty/sandbox and don't see any errors. Could you please provide an example where you see the errors? GoingBatty (talk) 14:32, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty I'm starting to think that it only appears on new articles, as I've just pasted them both on articles which already exist and the errors don't appear.
However on articles which haven't been published yet:
The line 106 error appears at the top of the main article.
And the line 284 error appears inside the infobox on the right. Danstarr69 (talk) 14:45, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danstarr69 Here are the steps I followed, and I don't see an error:
  1. Searched for "BoopBoop" to confirm there is no article of this name.
  2. Clicked on the redlink BoopBoop to start editing the article using the source editor (not VisualEditor)
  3. Copied the empty template from Template:Infobox television#Usage
  4. Pasted the empty template to BoopBoop.
  5. Clicked "Show preview" and I don't see any errors.
  6. Did NOT click "Publish page".
What process are you performing? GoingBatty (talk) 14:56, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Danstarr69:, by not-published do you mean draftspace? I've tested the blank template (even went as far as publishing) at Draft:Sandbox with no errors. I think a pressing question here is are you populating any of the fields in the template with information? Zindor (talk) 15:04, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Zindor I did the same steps as GoingBatty, yet for some reason it's only showing me these errors on unpublished articles, and not you two. I don't even know what all that Lua stuff even means. Danstarr69 (talk) 15:10, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A Lua module is a lightweight server-side program which handles the more complex operations of the template. The error "line 106: bad argument #1 to 'find' (string expected, got nil)" made me think that either a parameter had been filled with non-parsable characters or that the template was using some kind of magic word (Pagename etc) to populate a string but this was being inhibited by being in the wrong namespace. Both those theories now seem wrong however. Zindor (talk) 15:18, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty I did the same, and the errors always appear.
However I've now just pressed publish on the empty article so I could show you, and the errors don't appear anymore now it's been published.
If someone wants to delete it, they can, however I'll be updating that one, or re-creating it later today anyway.
Here it is, with the errors magically disappeared after publishing One Pair of Eyes (TV series). Danstarr69 (talk) 15:06, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty and Zindor.
By the way, the errors can only be seen when I switch from source editing to visual editing. Danstarr69 (talk) 15:12, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Danstarr69, I feel like we've come across a similar issue before at the Teahouse. I'm sure we'll have an answer for you once we rack our brains. Zindor (talk) 17:09, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find anything directly relevant in the Teahouse or Help Desk archives. @Danstarr69, the tech experts tend to hang out at WP:VPT, you might want to try asking over there. 97.113.167.129 (talk) 23:47, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Translate wiki.net

I need a tutorial video on translatewiki.net and the incubation process, Thanks.Jwale2 (talk) 13:53, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Jwale2:. Thanks for stopping by to ask this question! That website is unaffiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation or any of its projects. I did some looking around that website, and on the front page there is a link to a Support Desk. You should probably direct your question there. --Jayron32 13:57, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32: I only just figured this out myself, based on a question here the other day about fixing the markup on Fante translatewiki Project, but there is some kind of association between Wikimedia and TranslateWiki (info here). That's all i know though, the rest is a mystery. Zindor (talk) 14:35, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that TranslateWiki was developed by some of the people associated with the development of MediaWiki, the open-source software that runs Wikimedia Foundation projects; but TranslateWiki is run by an unrelated organization, being Software in the Public Interest. A similar relationship exists between Fandom (website) and the WMF; there are some of the same players involved, but they are and have always been independently run organizations. Simply put, TranslateWiki is still not part of WMF, and we really don't support it here. Perhaps a random Teahouse host will also be a regular at TranslateWiki and could answer the OP's question, but I still stand by my recommendation that the OP ask at their own dedicated support desk for help. --Jayron32 14:51, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32 There's slightly more of a connection than that, the WMF uses translatewiki to translate all the default system messages in mediawiki. If you want to start a project in a new language these days one of the requirements is that you've uploaded translations of all the important system messages to translatewiki, see the second point of meta:Language proposal policy#Requisites for final approval. I assume this is what OP is talking about since they reference incubation. I agree translatewiki is a better place to ask though. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 15:05, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification! --Jayron32 15:07, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jwale2 There's a help page on meta with some links to help pages on translate wiki, is there anything there that helps? Meta:meta:Babylon/Translations#Software I can't find any video tutorials though, sorry. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 15:19, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to everyone one for the support.Jwale2 (talk) 06:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

confusion de-orphaning articles

Hello, I have a question about de-orphaning articles:

I have checked some orphaned articles and some of them already have links to them in year pages (ex: births in 19xx)

I want to know that these articles are still considered orphaned? or just someone forgot to remove the orphanage template? A.a.m.tm (talk) 05:34, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi @A.a.m.tm and welcome to the teahouse! orphaned articles are those with absolutely no links to other articles (except some, of which Births in Year articles aren't a part of), so those articles no longer count. feel free to remove the tag! happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 05:38, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I really appreciate your fast answer <3 A.a.m.tm (talk) 05:44, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, A.a.m.tm. I would not use the formulation someone forgot to remove the orphanage template because that implies (falsely) that someone was responsible for remembering it. That is the wrong way to think of it. This is an entirely volunteer project, editors freely choose whatever they want to work on, and the only person obligated to deal with this minor issue that you have discovered and brought here to the Teahouse is you, if you choose to accept that task. Be bold and solve the problem. Cullen328 (talk) 05:45, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I completely understand that, and it was my mistake to think that way.
However, thanks for informing me! A.a.m.tm (talk) 06:04, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Melecie I'm not sure I understand your reply. Is an article linked in a births in 19xx-article still an orphan? I've never looked deeply into this myself. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:50, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång, WP:ORPHAN says, In the Wikipedia glossary, an orphan is defined as "an article with no links from other pages in the main article namespace". List articles are in the main article namespace. Therefore, an article with an incoming link from a list article is no longer an orphan. It may well deserve more incoming links, but lots of things ought to be improved. We all have lots of work to do. Cullen328 (talk) 05:57, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. An article I started recently turned 10+ redlinks blue, that was a bit pleasing. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:00, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Melecie Did you mean "no links to", or "no links from"? 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:46, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help removing random line breaks

Can someone please help me remove the weird line breaks in this blockquote. I think it has something to do with the notes I added.

Whose labour is in the bowl? was it of artist Mys or of Myron? Is this Mentor's hand, or, Polyclitus, thine?[a] No darkness gives it a dull leaden hue, nor is it a cloudy mass that shrinks from assaying fires. True amber is less radiant than its yellow ore, and the fine frosted silver surpasses snow-white ivory. The workmanship yields not to the material: even so the moon rounds her orb when she shines in fullness with all her light. There stands a he-goat prankt in the Aeolian fleece of Theban Phryxus;[b] by such his sister would more gladly have been borne; such a goat no Cinyphian barber[c] would deform, and thou thyself, Lyaeus, wouldst consent to his cropping thine own vine.[d] A Love in gold, two-winged, loads the back of the beast; the pipe of Pallas sounds from his tender lips; in such wise the dolphin, blithe with the burden of Methymnaean Arion,[e] bore him, no unmelodious freight, o'er tranquil seas. Let no hand from the master's crowd of slaves, only thy hand, Cestus, first fill this peerless gift for me with fitting nectar; Cestus, the banquet's pride, mix thou the Setine: the very boy, the very goat, methinks, is athirst. Let the letters of Istantius Rufus'[f] name assign their number to our measures of wine,[g] for he was the source to me of so proud a gift. If Telethusa come, and bring her promised joys, I will keep myself for my mistress, Rufus, by drinking your four measures;[h] if she be doubtful, I shall while away the time by seven; if she fail her lover, then, to throttle care, I will drink both your names.[i][1]

Notability Doubt

what are the issues in [[Draft:South Bengal Museum]] also please share the best notability guideline for it Rickinmorty (talk) 06:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Rickinmorty. This seems to be about Draft:South Bengal Museum. This draft is utterly uninformative and fails to make the case that this museum is notable. The single reference is not reliable and does not devote significant coverage to the Museum. The relevant guideline is Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). I have worked on a number of museum articles. Please see Manetti Shrem Museum of Art for an example of an acceptable article I wrote about a museum. Cullen328 (talk) 06:29, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rickinmorty. My answer is similar to Cullen328 but you can see WikiProject Museums Guideline for more information whereas this probably helps you. Fade258 (talk) 06:33, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cullen328, Did you mean uninformative? Kpddg (talk) 09:20, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Kpddg, it was a typo that I have now corrected. Cullen328 (talk) 15:40, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've been accused by family members of being utterly informative, which is a different way of saying please stop explaining stuff, no one asked. P.S. The single ref may be to a different museum, as the coordinates do not match. David notMD (talk) 11:22, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This draft is so utterly informative/uninformative that it doesn't say what this is a museum of. -- Hoary (talk) 13:33, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
According to the categories, it's an art museum/gallery, an archaeological museum and a natural history museum. Maybe it's a museum of South Bengal, generally. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 13:39, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Museum does not have a website. From a visitor review: "You can find here old things like pictures, images, furnitures, ancient valuable books, maps, memories of intelectual personalities, Globes, so many old books, pens, coins, old notes etc and etc." Sounds like what I have in my attic. It needs clarification of the relevancy of what is on display there from a reputable source (e.g. national geographic, world heritage, or maybe global news media). I agree the draft is uninformative, and the place looks completely irrelevant. Tobias2934 (talk) 10:15, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

British Certificate of Travel

Draft:British Certificate of Travel

Hi all, this submission of a travel document was recently rejected because the editor stated that there is a page containing all documents issued by the British authority. I am not totally convinced by this reason since the same document issued by other countries are all hosted in their own article rather than being contained in a list, there is also a comment from another editor recognising the notability. Is there a test we can put this article through to win its right of a dedicated page? FHTA8817 (talk) 15:59, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I reviewed the draft and think the article can be fairly uncontroversially moved to mainspace, since I just added the {{primary}} hatnote to address the sourcing concerns. "Markierung: 2017-Quelltext-Bearbeitung"

When I write something on top of an article, it always shows "Markierung: 2017-Quelltext-Bearbeitung". You can see this e.g. on the page Neuro-oncologie from May 12, 2022, 19:59. Could you support how I can remove this? Regards, Wname1 (talk) 17:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wname1 and welcome to the Teahouse. That appears to be the German equivalent of "Tag: 2017 wikitext editor"; the latter is what I see when I look at your contributions. I don't believe it's possible to prevent relevant tags from appearing next to your contributions (though I may be wrong, and am open to correction). I'm quite confused about why it's not appearing in English for you, though. Maybe there's a language setting for that somewhere. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:29, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata?

What does it mean when you get a notification that an article has been connected to a Wikidata item? Chainsawpunk (talk) 19:34, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Chainsawpumk. I don't know about the notifications. But Wikidata is another Mediawiki project, which aims to be a database of information (including links between items). Most Wikipedia articles are associated with the corresponding Wikidata item - if you are using a standard skin, you'll see "Wikidata item" in the side bar, and you can pick it. Links between Wikipedia articles in different languages are usually done through Wikidata too.
So the message means that the article in question is now listed in an appropriate Wikidata item - either there already was one, or one has just been created to support the article. ColinFine (talk) 20:45, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chainsawpunk Welcome to Teahouse! You usually will get notified who made a link between Wikidata and your article. Sometimes a human editor does it for you, especially when they link it to other language Wikipedia articles about same topic. The most common bot for linking to Wikidata) is User:Pi bot, which creates a bare bone wikidata item. You can read more how that specific bot works here: d:Requests for permissions/Bot/Pi bot 19.  Courtesy link: Draft:Grupa Amerika
hi @Jkma31 and welcome to the teahouse!
  • firstly, you should prove that this group meets the Notability for organizations, which is required for inclusion on the encyclopedia.
  • you should check out Writing better articles to get the hang of encyclopedia writing, as so far your article doesn't read much like a neutral encyclopedia entry with words such as ...one of the most pervasive, violent, and powerful criminal groups.... checking out pages of similar topics such as Sicilian Mafia may also be a good idea.
  • you'd also have to attach your inline citations to statements: for example, there's a quote that cites from an Italian report, but which one?
  • you can also use {{infobox criminal organization}} to easily hold data on the organization instead of having to struggle with tables
there's probably more that can be done with this, including someone else checking if the sources are appropriate (since I am not qualified to check the validity of sources), but here's what I can give. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:22, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
...oh, and I just realized you have already asked a question above and I would echo the same response: would everything that can be told about the Grupa be better off being placed in Serbian mafia? Should 2 really long obituaries be included in a biography article, word-for-word?

Please look at this section. The entire thing is two long obituaries, cut-and-pasted. I looked for some guidance on this and couldn't find a good answer. But it seems to me that it's probably a violation of copyright or plagiarism or something. I just don't know what. Fred Zepelin (talk) 02:58, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know about Wikipedia policies, but already having a biography, instead of adding obituaries, we can include the information as a section in the main biography, written encyclopedically. I dont think it violates copyright (it being ~77 years old), but it is indeed plagarism. Wikipedia does not encourage word-to-word copying from sources. Narutmaru (talk) 07:32, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On the contrary, Narutmaru, 77 is too short for the copyright to have expired. Today, most of the Western jurisdictions use a "70 years after author’s death" copyright. In the case of US works published in 1945, there is a trick due to a previous requirement to register for copyright, but assuming the copyright was renewed as appropriate by the journal, the rule is 95 years after publication (see List of countries' copyright lengths, scroll down to the table, row "United States"). That would mean the articles become public domain around 2040. [Insert here my usual rant about how copyright terms are absurdly long because of lobbyists from the entertainment industry and they should be shortened drastically]
I will soon remove the obituaries and request revdel as per Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Parts_of_article_violate_copyright. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 08:35, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fred Zepelin Wholly inappropriate. Find something new and informative within each obituary, then just quote and cite them with a bit of an intro to them both. Nick Moyes (talk) 08:17, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree with what's been posted above. The obituaries probably should be summarized and not copy-pasted verbatim. I don't think it's WP:PLAGIARISM per se since they're being attributed, but it might be a WP:COPYVIO and it's not really in accordance with MOS:QUOTE. I've asked about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history and also asked an administrator who works in resolving copyvios to take a look at things. Perhaps it will be sorted out fairly soon. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:30, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The obituaries were added by Jazzbeard in May 2012 and August 2019. Jazzbeard is still an active editor, so I've notified here by this comment. Personally, I agree that incorporating obituaries complete is not appropriate, whereas facts in the obituaries can be incorporated into the article. David notMD (talk) 08:42, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hello there, greetings of the day/. my article got rejected

article https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Smiley_Children_Society got rejected after adding data based on citations , can some one add a point - still in what ways it can be modified, thanks in advance Prudhvimoses (talk) 03:01, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Prudhvimoses. Your draft which is Draft:Smiley Children Society did not get rejected. It got declined, which is a very different thing. Please read WP:THREE, and post here links to your three best independent reliable sources (no more) that devote significant coverage to the Smiley Children Society. Do not post any sources that are not reliable, not independent and do not devote significant coverage to that society. All those sources must meet those three standards. Cullen328 (talk) 06:04, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Prudhvimoses, it appears that your name and the name of the society's founder are very similar. This raises conflict of interest issues. Please read WP:COI and, without delay, follow the instructions for declaring your conflict of interest. Thank you.--Quisqualis (talk) 23:23, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, my article got declined.

The submission of my article got declined. Draft:Renderforest. Can someone help me undertsand what the problem is? It says the content feels like an advertisement. However I have tried to keep things purely informational. On top of that, I have added some authority press coverages about Renderforest.

Hello, @RosiGhalach, and welcome to the Teahouse! I would recommend checking out the policy on Neutral Point of View, as I feel that would be more useful for you. Then, if you have anymore questions, feel free to post them here. Have a great day! HenryTemplo (talk) 10:16, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RosiGhalach: Welcome to the Teahouse. I am not a reviewer, but the tone is inappropriate, and I see why reviewers would consider it to be an advertisement: some of the language is something I would expect to see in ad copy. For one, the second-person pronoun is rarely (if ever) used in articles, and highlighting the prices sounds like "wow, look how cheap it is! You should buy it."
I personally don't like seeing and more, because it's a cheap way of trying to entice the reader into investigating further. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:09, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RosiGhalach Prices in an article can become out of date; Isu ggest that you remove them. I would also remove "in minutes" from "helps create logos and brand guidelines in minutes". 73.127.147.187 (talk) 08:57, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article declines

Hello all, my article draft has been declined twice now even after revamping it. I would like to ask if anyone here can help me make it better to meet a standard for the official Wikipedia page? At this point, I do not know if the references supplied are the main issue or the content itself based on the feedback I received. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Rnewenergy5 (talk) 09:27, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rnewenergy5 Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia is not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves, what they do, and what they consider to be their own history. It is a place to summarize what independent reliable sources say on their own(not through announcements or press releases) about those things, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. It's usually very difficult for a company representative to do that, as they must set aside everything they know about the company and all materials it puts out, only writing based on what others say. Niche industry awards aren't typically mentioned unless the award itself is notable and has an article itself (like Academy Award). 331dot (talk) 09:50, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello 331dot, thanks for your warm welcome and thanks for explaining thoroughly, it more clearer now as to why it was flagged advertorial. Rnewenergy5 (talk) 10:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rnewenergy5 As a paid editor (and thank you for declaring that), you should already know enough about how Wikipedia works to resolve these issue and also how to format Draft:Axxela correctly. Why should we do your work for you for free?
Just show here the three (no more, no less) links to independent citations which you know clearly demonstrates WP:NCORP, and explain why they do. We might then be able to tell you if you are right or wrong. The other links to insider business magazines, awards etc are irrelevant to notability, and just read like an advert for the business. We don't permit WP:PROMOTION here, and accept articles based on Notability alone Nick Moyes (talk) 09:50, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Nick, thanks for your reply. Since the first time the article was declined, I have been reading more links shared to know more about Wikipedia's policies and stuff but was confused at some point, but replies like this throw more light on the matter.
I must say, I do not think I'm able to provide three links to independent citations that clearly demonstrates WP:NCORP, at the moment. As such, I won't mind if you can help do the work, and advise on the cost for this? Rnewenergy5 (talk) 10:27, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rnewenergy5: If you're unable to find a decent number of independent reliable sources, perhaps it's too soon for the company to have an article. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Tenryuu, thanks for your response, I just keep leaning new stuffs and I am glad I brought bring my issue here. In that case, permit me to research three links that I feel demonstrates WP:NCORP and share here as Nick earlier advised.
Thanks in advance for your patience. Rnewenergy5 (talk) 14:26, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Per all of the above replies, one thing to remember is that nearly all declined drafts or deleted articles at Wikipedia are because of problems with the subject of the article, not the quality of writing. The barrier to entry is the amount of reliable and independently written source text that exists about a subject matter. At Wikipedia, this is often known by the term d'art "notability", but what this is really about is a test to see if we can actually create an article at Wikipedia where the text of that article is trustworthy and verifiable. Insofar as some subject matter for an article doesn't have sufficient reliable and independent text written about it already, it is difficult for us to create an article about it. Most of the time, there is nothing that can be done about this; the source text either exists or it doesn't. No amount of editing of an article, cleaning up the tone or the quality of the writing, will make source texts appear. I hope that makes sense. If you're genuinely interested in contributing to Wikipedia, it's probably better to spend time doing smaller work than creating new articles. Cleaning up grammar and spelling problems, rewriting existing text, finding sources for existing articles, that sort of thing. Creating a new article, which is compliant with Wikipedia's standards, is hard. --Jayron32 14:29, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Phillip (talk) 13:15, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ptpare, it would be easier to answer your questions if you typed them out here rather than taking screenshots of them typed elsewhere. That template seems to be part of the automated taxobox system - if you have questions about altering it, or using it elsewhere, it would be best to ask either at the overall talk page for the system or at the specific talk page for Speciesbox. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:29, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ptpare: Yes, please stop creating screenshots of the questions you want to ask, and simply type them directly into this thread. Trying to ask questions via screenshots not only makes it hard to repsond, but there's also a possibility that the screenshot might include some copyrighted content that could techinically be a copyright violation if not properly attributed. Even a screenshot of a Wikipedia page is required to be properly attributed to comply with Wikipedia's general licensing. If there's some techinical reason why you can type your questions directly onto this page, then please clarify and perhaps others can help resolve the issue; otherwise, please don't do this type of thing again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:02, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Wikipedia blocking everyone?

I was blocked and I have never edited anything before, in fact I wasn't going to, I clicked by accident the pen and a red text below appear saying that one particular user had blocked me. Then I thought “what could I've possibly done to get this punishment?” I started reading the help section, and it happens that

1) the publisher of an article doesn't want anyone to edit it, so he/she blocks every single IP, or perhaps just bock a rage of IPS for some reason. So, don't worry.

2) you had a disgusting attitude in the past, and you have been blocked for a while.

So, try to edit another article to figure out what happened. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.60.51.183 (talk) 13:57, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @109.60.51.183: and thanks for stopping by to ask this question. I've tried to do some investigating, but I am so far flummoxed about the source of your issues here. According to your editing history, the question above is the first time you have tried to do anything at Wikipedia. You've Never tripped an edit filter, and you've never been blocked. Can you please clarify what kinds of problems you are experiencing, so we can get to the root cause? Did you experience trouble while logged in under a specific account? What was the account name? Do you access Wikipedia using different devices with different IP addresses? What prior IP addresses might you have used? Were you trying to edit articles that have been protected from editing, due to high levels of disruption? There's a lot of possible answers to your questions, but without some additional information, I'm not sure how to help. --Jayron32 14:21, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@109.60.51.183: – IP addresses can be static (an IP address assigned to one device) or dynamic (an IP address temporarily assigned by your ISP that changes over time).
If you're talking about the latter IP address, then it's possible an editor using this IP address was previously blocked for their actions. You'll notice on the contributions page for an IP address, it's stated that "This is the contributions page for an IP user, identified by the user's IP address. Many IP addresses change periodically, and are often shared by several users."
If this is the case, this isn't your fault – it's just a virtue of non-static IP addresses, and bad luck that someone before you used it to vandalise Wikipedia.
If you want a more permanent way to contribute, I'd suggest creating an account – see Why make an account? for more details.--Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) ({{ping}} me!) 14:54, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Show an outline around an area on a map

Hello, how do I make the map show an outline around an area as seen here:

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

I tried copying the template but it doesn't work here:

Umtiza Nature ReserveThanks

@Maqdisi I see you asked the same question a few hours earlier at Wikipedia:Help desk#Outline frame around map object area. Sometimes it takes a few hours to receive a good response. Image on article

Hello Wikipedians! I've got a question. I uploaded a file on Commons but it's not sure if it's going to be deleted or not. I've used on one of my drafts. If, eventually, the image gets deleted, do I continue to use it there or not? And, is there a way to upload a file via Wikipedia? If so, how? Thanks - Fisforfenia (talk) 14:48, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Fisforfenia Welcome to the Teahouse! Which file are you referring to, and which draft are you referring to? There's also Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard, which states "Please ensure you understand copyright and the image use policy before proceeding." Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:16, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fisforfenia. I see that you uploaded a file called "LØREN at YSL Show 2022.webp" to Commons but it has been deleted as a copyright violation. Did you take the photo yourself? If not, where did you find it? Can you explain how you are the copyright holder for this image? Only the copyright holder can freely license an image for uploading to Commons. Cullen328 (talk) 16:46, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Cullen328. I'm not the copyright holder, unfortunately. I found it on several sites and apps e.g. Vogue, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram etc. No one checks on social media whether the image has any copyrights so I thought there are free licensed. I could ask the person who posted it on Pinterest to give me the copyrights in a mail but I do not think it will work either because it wasn't given by the photographer, I believe you understand what I mean. However, in second thoughts, I should check all the policies again next time. I was just asking so I could provid some images to my draft. Thank you to both you and @GoingBatty for spending your time to answer my questions. - Fisforfenia (talk) 18:55, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fisforfenia, the bottom line is that you cannot upload an image to Commons unless you are the copyright holder (which usually means that you are the photographer), or you have solid evidence that the image is copyright free or already freely licensed. How to resubmit a rejected draft after asking permission to do so...and no response.

Hello all! A recent draft that I submitted was rejected. I understand that I cannot resubmit, even with significant changes, w/o the reviewer's permission (which I have asked for). Are there any other options or suggestions? thank you! AvonMooch (talk) 15:10, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing to do is just accept it and move on. The reviewer may not feel your changes are adequate and simply does not want to beat the dead horse. If you truly feel the reviewer grossly erred, you can start a community discussion at WP:AFCHD, but in my opinion that wouldnt change anything. 331dot (talk) 15:17, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, for some time I wrote this page which is not accepted, despite several changes that I made to be in the standard of wikipedia, can someone look at this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Mahmoud_Shehabi_Khorassani and help me so that in the end it can be accepted Docteur Mansour Chehabi (talk) 16:29, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Docteur Mansour Chehabi: Welcome to the Teahouse. I strongly suggest you read Easy referencing for beginners, as the references section is a mess. Election Map

From inspect element, how do you upload a map? Pennsylvania2 (talk) 17:31, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pennsylvania2 and welcome to the Teahouse. Your question is a bit confusing - I know "inspect element" is something you can do in a web browser, but I can't think of what it would have to do with uploading a map to Wikipedia. Do you mean maps like the ones here? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:56, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@199.208.172.35 Like the one on 2020 Pennsylvania Attorney General election where you customize county by who won. You go under inspect element and allows you to change colors, but how do you upload to Wikimedia. Pennsylvania2 (talk) 18:19, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pennsylvania2, my experience with .svg files is limited, but once you've changed the colors as desired, I think you'd need to save a copy to your computer and then upload the copy to Commons (I see you know how to upload images, so I won't explain the process). Looks like someone has already done this with that very map, based on its history at Commons. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:30, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's about right from what i can tell. It's probably easier to chase the file down at commons first and view the source code on its own, copy the html and paste it into a basic text editor, then change the classes for each element (class relates to color), then save as .svg and upload to Commons. Zindor (talk) 19:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Zindor How do you remove background when uploaded? I upload with transparent background, but it shows white in back. Thank you.Pennsylvania2 (talk) 19:20, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd hazard a guess the white bg occured when you converted to .png before upload. Not sure of the specifics of your situation, there are tools online that will strip whitespace from .pngs, but as Maproom says they are .png previews in the article. If you save as .svg like we suggest there shouldn't be a problem i hope. Zindor (talk) 19:49, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania2, the map you see at 2020 Pennsylvania Attorney General election is not an SVG, it's a PNG. It's automatically created from the SVG at Commons which you can reach by clicking on it. If you want to change its details, you'll need to download the SVG from Commons, make your changes (some recommend Inkscape, I find it easier just to use a simple text editor like Notepad++), and click on "Upload a new version of this file". I see that you have recently uploaded a PNG and a JPG to Commons, but no SVG. Maproom (talk) 19:44, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Zindor Maproom I tried it as an .svg under File: Sample Map 2.svg, but it is still showing a white background. Is there a reason for that? Thank you so much for your help! Pennsylvania2 (talk) 20:39, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pennsylvania2 not sure, maybe try defining background-color:transparent Zindor (talk) 20:51, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Zindor (not Pennsylvania2, but I'll reply anyways: The firt nested <path> element in File:Sample_Map_2.svg (<path xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="fill:#fffefe; stroke:none;" d="M0 0L0 862L1374 862L1374 0L0 0z"/> causes the white background. if you want a transparent background, you can delete that line. Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:55, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah i see, thanks, that makes sense Zindor (talk) 21:08, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pennsylvania2, the map you started with, File:2020 Pennsylvania Attorney General Election.svg, was a nice sensible compact SVG, 39K in size, and easy to work with, with labels like 'label="Greene, PA"' so you can find each county and change its colour. The thing you uploaded was 257K in size and 1470 lines long, with no easy way of finding what any of it does. It combines the worst properties of raster and vector formats, being bulkier then either, and harder to edit than either. My guess is that you used Inkscape to convert the former to the latter. Please don't ever do that again, at least while I'm around. There is a faith-based view that SVG files are always better than raster files like PNG and JPG. That's true of well-constructed SVGs, but very far from true if the SVG files are created by the method you used.
...
Now that I've calmed down a bit — I advise you to download the map from commons, and edit it with some simple text editor. Where you see something like

<path style="font-size:12px;fill:#d75d5d;fill-opacity:1;fill-rule:nonzero;stroke:#ffffff;stroke-width:1.00724518;stroke-miterlimit:4;stroke-dasharray:none" d="m 372.65108,572.80834 8.22283,-3.21304 0.43974,0.002 4.16865,0.51286 7.05572,0.94092 3.6461,13.15151 -19.37465,0.69215 -3.76711,0.11322 -0.39128,-12.20002" id="PA_Greene" inkscape:label="Greene, PA" inkscape:connector-curvature="0" />,

change the "fill" value from #d75d5d to #7996e2, save it (with a new name if you like), and look at the result in your browser. You'll find that Greene County has become more Democratic; and the file is of course just as compact and readable as it was.
There's an unrelated issue, which doesn't bother me at all, but may exercise the copyright police at Commons. When you uploaded the SVG file there, you described it as your "own work". It isn't your own work; it's derived from the map you started with, and you need to give due credit to the creator of that map. Maproom (talk) 21:24, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Llmeyers That's interesting, I've never seen that before. My guess is that this is a problem at Google's end, and nothing WP can do anything about, but again, guess. Try asking at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), it can't hurt. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:36, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that the article technically counts as a newer than 90-day unpatrolled article, since I can't find any other evidence and its marked as noindex in the HTML source. I am unaware uncertain how the talkpage got indexed, however, because its noindexed. Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:50, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Llmeyers The issue was raised with the developers and going forward it's up to them to fix. Even if a solution happens it won't reverse whatever Google is doing currently. Once the article page is reviewed it will become indexable and then this may resolved but we have no direct control over Google's display choices. It also used to be possible to add pages to a queue for Google to index but that's not a general option anymore. Zindor (talk) 21:02, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Billy Creek Guard Station

I am thinking about submitting an article on the Billy Creek Guard Station, a building near Huntington Lake in California that was built as a security guard station, and later became the home of Orland Bartholomew. Orland Bartholomew was the first person to perform a solo winter assault of Mt. Whitney and the John Muir Trail. My primary reference sources will be High Odyssey by Eugene Rose and The Story of Big Creek by David Redinger. The Billy Creek Guard Station stands today as a museum operated by the Huntington Lake Big Creek Historical Conservancy. Arthur6Morgan (talk) 22:51, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK. You may wish to see WP:YFA. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 02:29, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
aside from Your first article, I also suggest reading notability of buildings, which guides in which buildings can be considered notable, and Reliable sources, which guides in which kinds of sources can be used. also please note that notability is not inherited, so just because Bartholomew lived in the guard station and they are notable, that doesn't mean the guard station is notable by itself. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 04:40, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Immanuelle: AFAICT the script only pops up in editing mode (I just tested it). Also, you should probbably switch the inclusion to
mw.loader.load("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Daduxing/familytree.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
because importScript(); is deprecated, not compatible with the mobile site, and might be removed by the devs at any time. If it still doesn't work, please look into the browser's console and check if there are any errors. Victor Schmidt (talk) 05:04, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Victor Schmidt I got it working. Unfortunately it does have a few errors though, but it's helpful Immanuelle 💗 (please tag me) 05:59, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do I see the list of articles I’ve created sorted by number of views?

I remember accessing a page where I could see a list of articles I’ve created ordered by the number of individual views they had. Can someone point me to that page? Thank you, Thriley (talk) 00:57, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thriley, welcome. You can find that tool here. Zindor (talk) 01:39, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

if a wikipedia page exists in another country/ language, can we duplicate it here? or do we have to re-write it? GoldLion247 (talk) 02:04, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Translate page Anaplastic oligodendroglioma to Spanish

Why can't translate Anaplastic oligodendroglioma into Spanish through "Wikipedia Translate page"? The system doesn't work since Friday, when I do something, also for other articles. Good morning, Wname1 (talk) 05:27, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dario Roberts

I want to create Articles for Dario Roberts. How can help me? I am new in Wikipedia Meditateofficial2023 (talk) 07:44, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Meditateofficial2023 Start with reading WP:BASIC. If you conclude "Yeah, I have those sources, no problem!" continue with WP:TUTORIAL, WP:YFA, and, if it applies to you, WP:COI. If you don't have the sources demanded at WP:BASIC, write about something else, because an article about Dario Roberts will not be accepted. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:38, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
First confirm that you have references which establish Dario Roberts as a notable person, using as guides everything GGS provided. David notMD (talk) 08:42, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Adding that creating an acceptable WP-article without any previous WP-experience is hard, so it is highly recommended to get some experience in WP-editing first. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:51, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

COI: author of a paper

Reading the Wikipedia article "Unmanned aerial vehicle". Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia. Retrieved May 21, 2022., I noticed that the application of UAV in infrastructure inspection was mentioned in the introduction but no related references were cited. As author of a scientific paper about this topic [1], I'd like to add some citations for these kinds of applications including my own work, the contents of which are absolutely on point. As a researcher I know how valuable free and high-quality information is. I do not think I am falling into a case of mere advertising and therefore I am asking for your permission of adding such citations. Thank you for your patience with an inexperienced user Bnontn89 (talk) 08:55, 21 May 2022 (UTC).[reply]

Hello, Bnontn89, and welcome to the Teahouse. Thank you for asking rather than just going ahead and adding it. The best thing to do is to place an Edit request (see that link for the details on the talk page Talk:Unmanned aerial vehicle, and an uninvolved editor will review your request and decide if it seems justified to add the citation. How to start a new sandbox page

I recently created an article and used my sandbox to practice various options. I then encountered another article which I wished to expand. Again I wanted to practice options in my sandbox, so I deleted the existing 'practice options' of the previous article and tried out options relating to the next article. The problem with this approach is that a mixed history of various articles is produced. How do I get a 'maiden new page' sandbox whose contents only will relate to the history of one article which already exists? BFP1 (talk) 09:09, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

BFP1, your current sandbox is User:BFP1/sandbox. Simply click on whichever of the following is most appealing (or least unappealing), edit it, and save it, and you will thereby create it. User:BFP1/sandbox 2, User:BFP1/sandbox 二, User:BFP1/sandbox 弐, User:BFP1/sandbox II, User:BFP1/sandbox ۲, User:BFP1/sandbox ෧ ... or indeed "User:BFP1/just_about_anything_you_want". -- Hoary (talk) 09:44, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll try thatBFP1 (talk) 10:13, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request for improvement of an Article

I have added an article named "Mothparja" and have improved it a lot. I have added sections, references, good content and photos. But except that it is still a stub-class article. So please review it , help me to correct it's grammatical or spelling mistakes. And if it is good enough to be graded up (higher than stub-class) . And if it is not able to do so then please tell me how can I improve it.FAAHS (talk) 09:37, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FAAHS, augmenting an article requires reliable (and of course comprehensible) sources. This one starts "Mothparja (Sindhi: موٿپارجہ/, Urdu: موتھپارجہ) is a small village in district Khairpur in Sindh province of Pakistan." Unfortunately I can read neither Sindhi nor Urdu, and I'm not unusual in this. I'd guess that my chances of finding new sources in a language I can read about a small village in Pakistan are infinitesimal. ¶ We read: "But [But what?] except that all still their ["there"?] are only two schools in Mothparja: Government Boys Primary School[13][14][15][16][17] and Government Girls Primary School[16][14][15] There are no high schools, colleges, universities, or any type of private school in Mothparja.[18]" I don't understand why you'd need more than one reference for the existence of a school. -- Hoary (talk) 09:55, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS It's not a stub; and you're free to promote it to "start". Better not to promote one's own work to "C", certainly not to "B"; and you'll get into trouble if you unilaterally promote anything (whether by you or anyone else) to "Good" or above; however, up to "start" is fine. -- Hoary (talk) 10:05, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping. But may you please promote it to "start" because you are expert and I am new. Can you tell me what should I do to m at make it able to be "C-class" and what are my mistakes. And please review it and help me correct it's mistakes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FAAHS (talkcontribs) 10:49, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, FAAHS. First, please don't post the same question in more than one place - you posted this both here and on the Help Desk. Secondly, I added the article to WP:WikiProject Pakistan a week ago, and I believe I suggested then that that WikiProject would be a better place to ask for review and collaboration on this article. How do I gain the approval to create a new Wikipedia page?

I feel as if the title asks my question perfectly. It'd be really helpful to know how to add a wiki-page onto the internet, or if anyone could post them alongside me. I've got many floating topics/people I can back up with reliable resources. Abdulraheem Gouda (talk) 12:56, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The first stage, Abdulraheem Gouda, is to gain experience making minor improvements to existing pages. Then make major improvements to them. And then digest Help:YFA. -- Hoary (talk) 13:01, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Abdulraheem Gouda, and welcome to the Teahouse! As many Editors will likely tell you, creating an article here is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, when compared to other tasks, so it's best to start by getting experience (I would recommend checking out the Wikipedia Adventure if you want to learn the basics of editing and contributing). After this, if you still wish to start an article, the best and easiest way for newer users to do so is through the Articles for Creation (AfC) process, which will guide you through the process of creating and submitting a draft article for review. Then, a AfC reviewer can check the draft article and make sure it is suitable for Wikipedia, and if it is, publish the article onto the mainspace. I hope I answered your question, and happy editing! HenryTemplo (talk) 13:18, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your answers have most definitely been helpful! I will most likely persue a short-lived career in the vandalism moderation section of the wiki until I eventually gather up enough experience in order to pass the school required in order to help articles appear onto the wiki.
Thank you both for your responses. They're both greatly appreciated!
I look forward to contributing to the wiki! Abdulraheem Gouda (talk) 13:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
