Star Trek question

Just wondering, have they ever mentioned in any Star Trek book or movie - how far Vulcan is from Earth in light years? Sandman30s (talk) 12:46, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Make it 16 light-years. Sorry for misprint ... --Dr Dima (talk) 15:40, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly, Trek canon identifies the star Vulcan orbits as 40 Eridani, exactly 16.45 light years from earth. Point your SETI dish accordingly. / edg 16:16, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am mistaken. Apparently it is never explicitly confirmed in the show. However, the figure 16 light years is given in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Home". There is evidence both real-world and in the canon that 40 Eridani was considered by Gene Roddenberry among others to be the Vulcan system.

Married... with children theme song

The television show "Married... with children" starts with the song "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra. The opening credits feature a few bars from the song, and end when the "with children" stamp appears on the screen and the "married" text molds over. I saw the opening credits the other day and saw that the audio ends abruptly after the stamp sound. however, I seem to remember that there were two chords after the stamp sound when I watched the show back in the 90s. Am I imagining these two chords, or have they been removed since then? Tuckerekcut (talk) 22:14, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was likely edited for television, usually that happens for length reason so more advertising can be used (it happens often with re-airings of early Simpsons episodes too). Recent Italian Movie Question

Okay, I remember seeing this movie on the Sundance Channel in New Zealand when I was about ten or eleven years old (I'm sixteen now), but I can't remember the title. I *think* it's an italian movie, and it has a preteen/early teenage girl who *i think* works in a convent or something, or she might live in an orphanage, and she meets an older guy who *i think* has terminal cancer (although she doesn't know this). I remember, like, one line, i think they were both in the back of a pickup truck, and she got angry and said something about "wiping invalid's asses" and then asked him to promise to "marry her" - by "marry" she meant walk her down the aisle. I think that the older guy also beat up her abusive boyfriend on a cruise ship, or something. My memories are hazy.

If any of this rings a bell, information would be gladly received. It's driving me crazy that I can't remember this movie! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.220.242.162 (talk) 19:46, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The nationality of the film, and the dying guy made me think Jeremy Irons, and looking him up got me to Stealing_Beauty, which I believe is the one I was thinking of. I'm not certain about the rest of the plot details though. /Kriko (talk) 19:03, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

- OP here. It's definitely not 'Stealing Beauty' - the film is set in the city, not the countryside, if I recall correctly.

beeping vid tapes

heyup y'all the Jr manksters watch DVD's of their fav children's TV programmes, but recently they were given some video tapes by a neighbour whose child has out grown them (Brum, Postman Pat Bob The Builder etc) when i have played the tapes, at the very start, where there is a black screen and some technical looking jargon in white, we often hear a series of 'beeps' (just like a number being dialled on a telephone pad) what is it? ah thank you.Perry-mankster (talk) 21:59, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cant say for sure but my bet is some sort of signal for automated broadcasting. I sometimes hear similar beeps on the radio late at night during advertisements and pre-recorded shows. 161.222.160.8 (talk) 23:12, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you were given copies that were originally used for television broadcasting. The symbols and beeps are a form of calibration, so the station knows they're broadcasting the show as it's supposed to be seen. -- Kesh (talk) 01:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Does anime have morals?

Well, I saw in Naruto that there was a moral that the thing to heal a wounded heart is love, and in other animes where you must never give up. So I'm just wondering, does anime have moralistic content? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirdrink13309622 (talkcontribs) 02:47, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That kind of depends on the anime. Like any artistic medium, the messages and themes and whatnot present in the work depend on what the author puts there. I don't believe that there's any rule prohibiting anime from delivering an Aesop or being "moralistic". --superioridad (discusión) 06:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's like asking if movies or or books or video games have content discussing morals or promoting certain morals. Mac Davis (talk) 08:41, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In Manga/Anime, as in many other forms of art, the process of furthering the deconstruction of the imagination, with the purpose to create room for reconstruction, ebb and flow. The act of questioning is the main moral of the story. Questioning morals, questioning the term, the act, the idea, the standpoints, the viewpoints, whatever. The very fact that you went as far as to question it here, then it has served its purpose. And the point, as well as with this engine of wikiness, is to find the best or better question. My moral of my answer is to question, even my own answer is questionable. --i am the kwisatz haderach (talk) 17:34, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am a big otaku, and I agree it depends on the anime. For this sort of thing, there are three types. The comical, (Azumanga Daioh, Excel Saga), which are for the sole purpose of entertainment and never or at least rarely show morals, and sometimes logic. The moralistic, (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bokurano) in which the whole series is based on morals or a global message. Finally those that fall in the middle. These are the longer series like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, that entertain but as they get closer to the end of the story arc they draw in ideals such as "Family is what you make of it", "True friends will always stand by you", and "Always follow your dreams". I hope that helps. Thanks for giving me this chance to show my otaku-ness. BioYu-Gi! (talk) 21:17, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes

Bold textMy name is Walter Robinson, Jr. and I am intrested in creating Wikipedia biographies for black gospel legends like Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes, The Harmonizing Four, Evelyn Turrentine Agee, and many other gospel musicians that are very significant to American culture but there is no information about them hardly online.

I would appreciate if Wikipedia would create biographies for Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes, Willie Banks and the Messengers and Reverend Julius Cheeks along with may others.

[[2]]

Willie Neal "The Country Boy" Johnson hails from and still resides in Texas, Tyler and also from one big musical family. He is the eldest of six children (3 boys and 3 girls) and says that his mother always had them singing in one church or another. Rev. C.W. Jackson recognized Willie's talent and extended the offer for Willie to join his group, The Five Ways of Joy Gospel Singers. He accepted and thus the professional career of Willie Neal Johnson began while he was yet in his teens.

After a few years, Willie approached some of his hometown pals and convinced them to join him in forming a new group, Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes. The original members were: Ralph McGee, Rev. J.D. Talley, Charles Bailey, John Jackson, Lonzo Jackson, and Archie B. McGee. The newly formed Gospel Keynotes repidly became one of the standout gospel groups in their area and soon got their first big break - an introduction to Mr. Ernie Young, President of Nashboro Records. This meeting resulted in the group being signed to the Nashville based gospel record label and having their first taste of success with a national hit record, "Show Me The Way". During this association, more than 20 albums and many gospel singers were recorded.

Over the years, personnel changes would occur and the following members of the Gospel Keynotes at one time: Larry McGowan, Paul Beasley, and Donny Timmons.

After Nashboro Reocrds shut its doors and ceased to function, Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes signed with Malaco Records in Jackson, Ms in 1985. With Malaco, the group has undergone another personnel change as well as a name change. They are now known as Willie Neal Johnson and the New Keynotes. Members are: Robert Williams (from the Gospel Keynotes), LaManuel Boykin, Maurice Morgan, David Talley, Sheldon Talley, Kenneth Talley and Teddy Cross (also from the Gospel Keynotes).

Under the direction and leadership of Willie Neal Johnson, who's commonly referred to as "the country boy", the New Keynotes are a combination of gospel talents and styles fused and blended into an explosive high energy, electrifying performance group. They can stir up emotions the moment they step on stage to perform!

Their selection of materials and the manner in which they present their songs in a performance is like a good old fashoined, foot stompin', hand clapping, tear streaming revival, lead by a soul stirring, aisle walking preacher, singing and shouting and dispensing the gospel in a soul saving manner.

Since signing with Malaco, Willie Neal and the Keynotes hace recorded seven albums, each of which successively propelled the group to new heights. They are now one of gospel's premier traditional quartets who have set new standards for the genre.

After having helped to introduce the "Choirtet" concept to the masses with "I'm Yours, Lord" which features the Misissippi Mass Choir, Willie Neal and the New Keynotes have found a niche that has not only increased their support in the quartet arena, but brought them new fans as well.

The current release, "Lord, Take Us Through", with special guest Evangelist Dorothy Norwood, hit Billboard's Top 25 and is a testament to the "cross-over" appeal that the group has garnered so much attention in the music industry.

Obscure 1979 movie

Nearly two decades ago, I watched this motion picture on TV. It was called 2 Catch 2. (The movie was originally released in 1979). I haven't seen it since. Will it ever come out, digitally restored, on DVD?72.229.136.18 (talk) 14:39, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe your thinking of Catch 22 good book, not such a good movie apparently.
Catch-22 was released in 1970, and was well-liked, despite the box office receipts. 2 Catch 2 is an actual movie, released in 1979 (as stated in the original question). There is an entry for it at the All Movie Guide, although nothing shows up on IMDB. As far as a DVD release (digitally restored or not), Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. --LarryMac | Talk 18:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There was a movie mentioned in VH1's I love the 90s that was about a normal man (I think he may have been played by Tom Arnold, not sure) that snaps under the pressures of modern life. The only thing I remember is a clip where he goes to McDonald's and orders a breakfast sandwich only to find that it is exactly one minute after 11 o'clock and they stopped serving breakfast items - he then aims a Mac-10 at the cashier and yells (and swears) at her to give him his breakfast sandwich. Talk is cheap

Where did this phrase originate, does anyone know? The wiki articles are just on the albums. I think its quite a nifty, nugget-sized phrase. SGGH speak! 18:56, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is related to the proverb "Speech is silver, silence is golden". SaundersW (talk) 10:26, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One early religious reference is Judah ben Ilai's comment on Psalm 65 ("For thee praise is silent.") "Silence is the cure to everything: when R. Dima came from Palestine, he said that in the West they say: "A word is worth a sela, and silence two." " [3]. (Different English translations to be found.)---Sluzzelin talk 13:20, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now, that's an interesting connection. I've always interpreted these phrases quite differently. For me,
  • "... silence is golden" is about the difference between saying something and not saying anything, particularly if what you have to say is not of much value, whereas
  • "talk is cheap" is about the difference between merely talking about conquering that huge mountain up ahead (anyone can do that) and actually doing it (which takes a special skill or effort). -- JackofOz (talk) 21:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'd usually interpret "talk is cheap" along those lines too, but the connection still comes to mind. There are other phrases lying somewhere in between. "Put your money where your mouth is" or "Put up or shut up", for example, could merely imply the "action" of risking one's money in a bet, but not necessarily of "doing" what is talked about. (Exact origins of the money-mouth phrase are uncertain but the gambling etymology seems plausible according to here). There can be various reasons too why silence is worth more than talk. One reason, as you wrote, is "if what you have to say is not of much value" or even of negative value, as in the phrase attributed to Boethius: "Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses." ("If you had kept your silence, you would have remained a philosopher"). Another reason could be the inadequacy of words to express something, as in the Psalms example where silent praise is appropriate because words cannot do justice to God's great goodness. (More words, but I still found no sourced origins of the exact phrase "talk is cheap".---Sluzzelin talk 07:39, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to remember a TV movie

I've been trying to recall the name of an American television movie from roughly the early 1980s. It was about a luxury ocean liner from earlyish in the 20th century (20s or 30s) that sank. When the wreck is found, many of the survivors of the ship are still alive (!) living in the trapped air of the ship and have developed some technologies to help them live (yeah, I know, not very plausible). I believe it was played on two successive nights originally, and I saw it repeated a couple of times in subsequent years. I don't recall which network it was on. Anyone have any ideas? -- Flyguy649 talk 00:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure? --Joelmills (talk) 02:58, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. It was out around then, though. -- Flyguy649 talk 04:59, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bergman's Religion?

I just finished watching The Seventh Seal for the first time, and now I find myself wondering what Ingmar Bergman's religion was. Any Help?68.84.254.227 (talk) 04:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Though he grew up in a devout Lutheran household, Bergman later stated that he lost his faith at age eight and only came to terms with this fact while making Winter Light.. Corvus cornixtalk 04:38, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rule 34

I've been wondering this for years. According to Rule 34, there's pornography for everything - examples include the Smurfs, 9/11, and Cream of Wheat Cereal - but is there a kind of pornography where people are shown expressing intimacy and caring for one another? In other words, they aren't merely engaged in animalistic sex, but they seem to have a genuine relationship? I suspect it's the one exception to the Rule. If this is a genre, does it have a name?

Good luck!

That would probably be classed as erotica rather than porn. --Richardrj talk email 09:25, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rule 34. (Also briefly mentioned in Wikipedia's article on 34 (number)). ---Sluzzelin talk 10:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Rather disturbingly I've seen porn in which foxes and horses(unicorns) are shown being intimate with one another.. Followed by penetrative sex - so no.87.102.16.238 (talk) 12:20, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
