The eleand is the largest of the antelopes weighing up to 2,000 lb (900 kg). Cows or females are smaller with lighter horns and no mat of hair on their forehead. Eland live in troops of 6 to 24 individuals are are constantly traveling searching for food and water. During times of drought they may group together and form larger groups. There is usually one calf per birth after a gestation of 8 to 9 months. The newly borns stays hidden for a week before following his mother, who provides him milk for about six months.
