Wikipedia:Requested moves
This page has an administrative backlog that requires the attention of willing administrators. Please replace this notice with no admin backlog when the backlog is cleared. |
Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- A page should not be moved and a new move discussion should not be opened when there is already an open move request on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the open discussion.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add

to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Uncontroversial proposals
Only list proposals here that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete (for example, spelling and capitalization fixes). Do not list a proposed page move in this section if there is any possibility that it could be opposed by anyone. Please list new requests at the bottom of the list in this section and use rather than copying previous entries. The template will automatically include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required.
If you object to a proposal listed here, please re-list it in the #Incomplete and contested proposals section below.
- Clon (group) → Clon — No need to predisambiguate. — SKS2K6 (talk) 16:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- List of World Eight-ball champions → List of World Eight-ball Champions — "World Eight-ball Champion" is a professional title, thus a capitalized proper noun, and current half-capitalization makes no sense at all ("World Eight-ball" doesn't mean anything, and of course is not a proper name). Someone moved it from the latter to the former w/o discussion and apparently modified the resulting redirect, such that the weird move cannot be undone without admin intervention. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 16:44, 27 August 2008 (UTC) — — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 16:44, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Template:Solar Eclipses → Template:Solar eclipses — Sentence casing (MoS) — Sardanaphalus (talk) 17:59, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Incomplete and contested proposals
With the exception of a brief description of the problem or objection to the move request, please do not discuss move requests here. If you support an incomplete or contested move request, please consider following the instructions above to create a full move request, and move the discussion to the "Other Proposals" section below. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.
- MetroCard (New York City) → MetroCard — {Discuss} — There are no other articles with the name MetroCard at this time, and thus there is no need to disambiguate. — AEMoreira042281 (talk) 03:18, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- As MetroCard (disambiguation) shows, there are metrocard systems in several cities and countries across the world. The reader needs to know at the start that the article is about the New York Metrocard system. Talk:MetroCard (New York City) shows that there is a metrocard system in Washington-DC, and an NYPD police metrocard. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 05:43, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Stóːlō → Sto:lo for the same reasons, or at least change it to Stó:lō, same as the catname (only if that stays the same); one additional reason is this article name doesn't use the same special characters as teh catname does; if anything this should have the same diacriticals as teh category (which are at least similar and don't have that space, which we never seen in printed English). This re-opens the old Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/Skwxwu7mesh issue also, and likewise while the article maybe can/should have the special characters, it's cumbersome to have it in the category name. If catnames redirected the way article names did, this wouldn't be so much of a problem, but it is a problem.Skookum1 (talk) 16:49, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- Walter Freeman and Walter J. Freeman (author) - this current situation is a bit of a mess. I suggest that Walter J. Freeman and Walter Freeman pages should both redirect to Walter Freeman (disambiguation). Then this page should explain that there are two people who are both correctly known as Walter J. Freeman working in the broad field of neuroscience. One is Walter Freeman (surgeon) - inventor and foremost practitioner of lobotomy, and one is Walter Freeman (neuroscientist), the inventor of the mass action theory of neural function. (Note that I am proposing, as part of this rearrangement, to move the existing Walter J. Freeman (author) to Walter Freeman (neuroscientist), since I think neuroscientist rather than author is a considerably more informative description of this individual.) - Chill Factor → Chill factor —(Discuss)— Chill Factor should be moved to Chill factor per naming convention. --Suntag (talk) 20:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Концерт → Kohuept —(Discuss)— WP:UE, and WP:RS -- see talk page, where a move request from June was never closed. I am starting again so it can be finished. --Zuiver jo (talk) 19:45, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

- Star Trek (original series) → Star Trek: The Original Series — (Discuss) - User:Observatorr (contribs), the editor that moved this page, wants to move it back after some discussion at WikiProject Star Trek.
Also, the original move was not discussed, and no one else has expressed concern over the original title. There was a little discussion before moving this article, but not enough to reach a consensus. — OranL (talk) 16:38, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- List of events named massacres → List of massacre events —(Discuss)— "List of events named massacres" should be renamed to "List of massacre events" WP:LIST#List_naming's requires that "A list's title should be as clear and unambiguous as possible" and this is not the case for this article. First, the list is about the events, not the name. In addition, even though the named events may contain the term "massacre" in their name, none of the events in the article are actually named "massacre". The contain modifiers such as adjectives to distinguish one massacre event from another. The name of the article should be renamed to be clearer and not be misleading. --Suntag (talk) 16:03, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Template:Nonfree → Template:Comparison cells —(Discuss)— I propose that this template be renamed because its name does not fit its actual purpose, and its name is so close to Template:Non-free as to potentially cause mix ups. ---- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 14:57, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Constance of Castile, Queen of France → Constance of Castile -(Discuss) According to the Wikipedia's naming conventions, this article's title should be simply Constance of Castile. The other Constance of Castile is now at Infanta Constance of Castile since she was not a consort. Surtsicna (talk) 12:30, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Howzat (greeting) → Howzit —(Discuss)— List article referred to only mentions Howzit, Saffies I've met have all used Howzit, not Howzat. --Dweller (talk) 09:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Tumblers → Tumbler (hypertext) —(Discuss)— This title, "Tumblers", should not be plural. "Tumbler" is a disambiguation page, so Gwimpeys first suggestion is put forward. --Leo Laursen – ✍ ⌘ 17:23, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

- International reaction to the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence → International recognition of Kosovo independence —(Discuss)— The article has evolved to become a compendium of recognitons and recognition denials by states. The proposed move has been discussed on the talk page. The proposed name is better than another proposed and also favorably received alternative, "International recognition of the Republic of Kosovo", because it avoids POV (is it Kosova or Kosovo, according to its government?) and does not confuse the issue with the republic proclaimed some years ago and recognized then by a few states. Renaming would help eliminate the original research still present in the article, whereby non-recognition by states and anonymous rumors (example: Uruguay) have been cast by editors as state recognition or denial of recogniton by a state, This OR has spread elsewhere: Image:Kosovo_relations.svg, Image:Kosovo_relations.png. --Mareklug talk 02:01, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Bell Hooks → bell hooks – (Discuss) - the author lists her name on all publications and in all catalog listings (e.g. Amazon) officially as "bell hooks". The consensus after the discussion is in favor of the move, but it requires administrative intervention. Godheval (talk) 00:17, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Double Dragon (video game) → Double Dragon – (Discuss) – The current Double Dragon article is only a redirect to this page to the video game article, which doesn't really make any sense. Pretty straightforward, but the move will require administrative intervention. Godheval (talk) 00:14, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Suikoden (video game) → Suikoden – (Discuss) – Suikoden was moved to Suikoden (series), clearing space for the game article to be moved to Suikoden, but administrative action is required.Godheval (talk) 00:03, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport → Berlin-Schönefeld Airport —(Discuss)— At the moment the naming of the three Berlin airports is inconsequent: There is Berlin-Tegel Airport (de), Tempelhof International Airport (de), and Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport (de). Acutally, none of them bears the word "International" in its official name, but all of them contain the word "Berlin" (see links to their Wikipedia articles in German). Therefore Tempelhof and Schönefeld should be renamed and moved consistently to Berlin-Tempelhof Airport and Berlin-Schönefeld Airport. --Komischn (talk) 22:38, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- PSR B1620-26 c → PSR B1620-26 b —(Discuss)— While the scientific papers dealing with this object avoid the designation issue, the SIMBAD astronomical database lists this object as "PSR B1620-26 b" [1]: the "c" designation produces an error when you try to look it up [2]. Since SIMBAD is pretty much the official go-to source for astronomical designations, we should follow that rather than use an unofficial designation. --86.171.72.213 (talk) 19:00, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- Mick Murphy (Irish Socialist Party) → Mick Murphy (politician) —(Discuss)— The name of this article suggests that "Mick Murphy" is a name for an Irish Socialist Party. - Prison rape (United States) → Prison rape —(Discuss)— Pre-emptive disambiguation. Write the general "prison rape" article first, then deal with detailed region-specific forks as and where appropriate. This article may be hopelessly US-centric at the moment, but that's a reason for a global tag and rewrites, not a narrowing of the article's whole focus to the over-represented area. --tomasz. 09:14, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- Rudolf Wanderone, Jr. → Rudolf Wanderone —(Discuss)— To comply with WP:NCP and WP:DAB - the disambiguating "Jr." is unneeded, as there is no other notable Rudolf Wanderone. Listing this here because someone said this was not an uncontroversial proposal, for some reason. (I think that may have been mistaken; the article has had naming disputes in the past, but nothing to do with the "Jr.", and the cited guidelines are pretty clear on the subject. But I don't care, really, what path it takes to get it renamed.) NB: The infobox has not been changed to remove the "Jr." yet, since this move is still pending, and of course his full name should remain at top of the lead. --— SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 19:09, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Direct Connect (file sharing) → Direct Connect —(Discuss)— The suggested title currently redirects to a useless disambiguation page at Direct connect; the file sharing program is clearly the most likely target for a search on the term. --Propaniac (talk) 14:53, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

- Poitín → Poteen —(Discuss)— WP naming conventions require the "most easily recognized name." As this is the English Wikipedia, we should use English spelling. "Poitin" is Irish and is not found in English-language dictionaries. --Wahrmund (talk) 00:08, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

There's also no chance of anyone thinking that the list is confined to accidents for which British Rail alone was responsible.
