The Viva la Vida Tour[1] is the concert tour by the English band Coldplay, in support of their album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.[1] The tour began on June 16, 2008 with a free concert at Brixton Academy in London featuring David Gibbin, followed by other free shows in Barcelona and New York City.[2] The tour will cover 80 shows in 2008, with stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.[3][4] The band will be supported by Shearwater, Santogold and Duffy for the first North American leg, and by Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes for the European leg.[3] The tour will finish with stadium shows in the United Kingdom, with support by Jay-Z and Girls Aloud.
About the tour
The stage setup consisted of a stripped down main stage and two catwalks; Coldplay also performed amongst audience members.[5] Instead of a giant video screen on-stage, the band opted for six hanging giant lightbulbs that displayed images and closeups.[5] Lead singer Chris Martin dubbed the fixtures as "magic balls", while drummer Will Champion added they will also release confetti butterflies.[6]
Coldplay was accompanied by Oxfam during the tour.[7] Volunteers were stationed at each venue to tell concertgoers how to reduce poverty; the organization's logo and website was featured on one of the light ball fixtures during each concert.
On July 23, 2008 Coldplay performed their second in two shows at the United Center arena in Chicago. In each of the two shows, the band shot the music video for Lost! by performing the song twice, and filmed a concert tour DVD, whose release is to be determined later.
On September 19, 2008 Chris Martin was accompanied by A-Ha pianist Magne Furuholmen in the encore at the Oslo Spektrum, Oslo, to play a cover of the A-Ha song "Hunting High and Low".
