Growth

In 1959 the institute started with civil, electrical and mechanical engineering departments.A Bachelors program in Chemical Engineering was started in 1964. The following year saw the start of Metallurgical engineering program. In 1971, the college started the undergraduate program in Electronics and Communication engineering. In 1976, its affiliation was changed from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University to Kakatiya University, with which it remained affiliated, until the institute was granted a deemed university status in 2002.

In 1994, the institute was selected by Overseas Development Administration (ODA) of Great Britain for exchange programs between, the UK and India in the field of information technology. This program ran till 1999. In 2000, the institute started its MBA program. The next year, a center of Software Technology Parks of India was opened in its campus(it is currently dysfunctional). In September 2002, the college was renamed as National Institute of technology and was given a deemed university status.Recently,in 2006,the institute started a Bachelors program in Biotechnology. It has been given the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) bringing it at par with IITs,IISc and ISI on 15 August 2007.

The institute is well known for its dedicated faculty, staff and the state-of-the-art infrastructure conducive to a healthy academic environment. The institute(REC) is constantly striving to achieve higher levels of technical excellence. Evolving a socially relevant and yet internationally acceptable curriculum, implementing innovative and effective teaching methodologies and focusing on the wholesome development of the students are our concerns. Thanks to UNESCO and UK assistance in the past, many developmental activities were undertaken. And now, the World Bank Assistance under TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) since 2004 has been a timely help in the overall development NITW.

The postgraduate program students are selected through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). In addition, there are separate entrance tests of MBA, MCA (NIMCET) and other M.Sc. programs. For doing MBA in this college minimum requirement is engineering with first class.Half of its students are from the home state of Andhra Pradesh, where the other half from other states of India and several foreign countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Tanzania, Mauritius, South Africa, Palestine, Iran, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Bhutan etc. Warangal being the first NIT (Previously REC http://nitwarangal.net/) established in 1959, has a huge network of Alumni all over the world.

Consistently being in the peak position among the NITs. In 2007 DataQuest ranked NIT Warangal as the 8th best engineering college in India. It is ranked Number 1 among NIT's as of 2007.

Credit system

Like other DEEMED Universities, NIT Warangal follows a credit system for evaluating academic performance. The GPA ranges on a scale from 0 to 10. Each course carries a certain number of credits (usually 1 to 4). The student has to secure a minimum number of credits over the duration of the degree, that depends on the program, the department, and specialization. The following letter grades are awarded for each course:

Letter Grade Ex A B C D P F R
Grade Points 10 9 8 7 6 5 0 0

The F grade is failure in the course, and R is the failure to satisfy attendance requirements; in either case, the course is considered failed. The GPA is computed as the cumulative credit-weighted average of the grade points:

where:

  • is the number of courses,
  • is credits for the course,
  • is grade points for the course, and,
  • is the cumulative grade point average.

Presently, whenever a fail grade is followed by a subsequent pass grade, the fail grade is not used in computation of ; these fail grades are also removed from the transcript and replaced by a footnote indicating the number of attempts made to obtain the pass grade. Some courses are considered pass-fail courses which, if a requirement to a student, has to be passed by the student; however, the marks/grade obtained in that course is not considered in the calculation of the CGPA.

Controversy and involvement of Student Council

In March 2010, an investigation by a local newspaper agency on NITW revealed the following falsifications done by the director Y.V.Rao

1. Embezzlement of funds of around 60 Crore (600 million) Rupees meant for improvement of infrastructure and construction of hostels in the university.

2. Selling the drop-out seats illegally after the first and second phase counseling of the entrance examination from which admissions are given.

The investigation also revealed the involvement of the Registrar of the university in maintaining the books for the university expenses regarding the above allegations.

The student council of NITW demanded for the resignation of the director and the registrar following the publication of this investigation in the news. They went to Delhi to report the situation personally to MHRD. The students seized the Director's office and demanded answers to around 40 questions in the college auditorium. After over three hours of protest, the Director resigned bowing to the pressure and unable to answer. He then left the campus with police protection. The Registrar also resigned and a director in-charge was appointed.

The alumni of NITW have started a website for achieving transparency in the book-keeping and is received well by both the students and the faculty.
