Lecanorales tags

Hello. I noticed you've added Lecanorales tags to a couple of the Menegazzia species pages. My concern is that if we add every species in the Lecanorales to this list it will become unmanageable (over 5000 species). But, if we just add families/genera it's much more easy to handle. Do you agree? Then we can still have generic tags on all the species, and the genera will be tagged to the orders so everything is still connected. --User: BC Myles 23 April 2010 —Preceding undated comment added 08:21, 23 April 2010 (UTC).[reply]

I'm sure you're right. But category:Menegazzia is still a redlink. I'm just trying to find the most appropriate category for new articles, so I looked at Menegazzia hypernota and went up the Taxobox until I found one that had a category. As the number of Lecanorales articles increases so subcategories for families and species will be needed, and individual species can then be recategorised. RE: [1] Doesn't this tag keep the article on the Category:Unreferenced BLPs if not, GREAT JOB and thanks! Okip BLP Contest 12:14, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No it's a separate category. Hence my suggestion at BLP RFC II that we have at least a one year moratorium before deciding what if anything to do about the backlog there. A few weeks ago I was loathe to suggest a trawl through the ones tagged as unreferenced simply to correct the tag, I'm now shifting my ground as I think that getting the tags correct is better communication to the contributors and more likely to get the article improved. tagging an article as unreferenced when it links to a professors page at their university is simply incorrect to the point of being confusing. Tagging it with {{primarysources}} and refimproveBLP spells out what we want done to improve the article. ϢereSpielChequers 12:32, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

Hello, WereSpielChequers. I noticed that the first letter of your signature is rendered as a box on my computer. Is this on purpose? If it isn't you might want to change it. Thank you. NerdyScienceDude :) (✉ click to talkmy editssign) 23:13, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I think it may be a Microsoft problem. It works fine in Firefox. ϢereSpielChequers 23:17, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Hey WereSpielChequers :), and thanks again for protecting my page. I was wondering if I could get your input on the dispute going on at Talk: Younus AlGohar. Basically its primarily an ongoing dispute (at least a couple of months) between User: Falconkhe and myself over the subject's credibility and controversies relating to them. This dispute has pretty much been carrying over to various talk pages relating to this subject (i.e Talk: Messiah Foundation International, Talk: RAGS International, Talk: The Representative of Imam Mehdi, Talk: The Representative of Gohar Shahi, Wikipedia: Wikiquette alerts, this noticeboard, and our talk pages). The issue, it seems, is that the editor has a COI with this subject (an apparent follower of Riaz Ahmed Gohar Shahi from Pakistan and strongly opinionated critic of AlGohar) and seems to have mistook my comments that did not agree with their ideas about Younus AlGohar (i.e. my questioning of the claim that AlGohar is a terrorist, among other things they claimed without providing the necessary references) to mean that I am personally affiliated with AlGohar, and have thus seemed to take every one of my edits to articles relating to him personally (like this). They have become rather hostile and resorted to edit warring, adding tags when most editors considered it unjustified. I have taken it to Wikiquette, but I think this issue is so much more deep-rooted, and seems to be more of a sectarian issue for the editor. The issue seems to complex to negotiate, so I was wondering if it would be sensible to request arbitration at this stage? If not, could you perhaps direct me to a relevant noticeboard or suggest other ways of dealing with this? I think I'm in over my head here, and advice from a more experienced editor such as yourself would really be appreciated :). I sincerely hope this issue is resolved quickly- thanks in advance! :) Omirocksthisworld(Drop a line) 10:58, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please be informed that I have nothing against younus and his organization but Omi & his/her associates were getting personal on above mentioned arlticles. My point of view is that Omi & his/her associates are the main editors of the articles and Omi & his/her associates have no reliable sources to support their claims? The article should be on actuall name rather his alias names or pseudonym or the name he likes for himself. If Omi & his/her associates haven't reliable sources support this article, they should not have started this article but Omi & his/her associates started, which clearly shows their personal linkage with younas or Omi & his/her associates can be younas to promot himself, younus can do anything from sending people behind the bars to reward them death as he did in India and Pakistan. Once again, I would ask either provide reliable resources (Not self published websites) or leave above mentioned articles. Omi & his/her associates are wasting the time of WP administrators, they have nothing except self-published/developed websites. Thanks--Falconkhe (talk) 11:48, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK I'm on a very limited connection this weekend, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to refer you on. If you post a query on the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard someone there can advise as to what constitutes a reliable source. If this chap has multiple names then the normal thing would be to redirect from one to another. Hope that helps. ϢereSpielChequers 00:38, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WereSpielChequers! We hates it forever. (Well at least until the next update to Wikipedians by number of edits.)

I reckon I was on 9736. That's going by the number that appears on the "my preferences" page less the number of my edits since. The external tool gives numbers that are 16 higher or 47 lower depending on whether deleted edits are included.--Peter cohen (talk) 12:00, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Only 4 short then! Deleted edits are definitely counted - I should know I must have a couple of thousand now. ϢereSpielChequers 12:15, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it was the 4 short that got to me. I thought I would check today to see if there was an update. Noticed I was 50 past the new number and when I didn't find myself counted back. I wonder why the external tool produces a higher number.--Peter cohen (talk) 12:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BLP discussion

Hi WereSpielChequers! If there is any consensus at at all, it is that the entire discussion has become a tangled confusion, and as a result both proponents and opponents of the issues under discussion are abandoning ship. None of us want this. It is still not clear which way consensus will fall and your contributions to the discussion are invaluable. However, In an attempt to keep the policy discussion on an even track, some users have decided to start the ball rolling for clarity by creating a special workshop pages. The first of these is for the technical development of a template at WT:BLP PROD TPL in case policy is decided for it . The taskforce pages are designed keep irrelevant stuff off the policy discussion and talk page, and help a few of us to move this whole debate towards a decision of some kind or another. The pages will be linked in a way that watchers will still find their way to them. This move is not intended to influence any policy whatsoever; It is to keep the discussion pages focussed on the separate issues. Cheers. --Kudpung (talk) 04:30, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey WereSpielChequers, how are you? I rolled the dice, but they didn't show "TICKLE" "ARS(E)" (which is probably a good thing), since the article is, as yet, only threatened with deletion by that well-known deletionist BongoMatic. So I'm making a personal plea to help establish notability, and if you could help keeping this article about an obviously notable topic to no more than 1,499 characters, I'd be even more grateful (a DYK nomination could upset the delicate balance of my marriage). Thanks in advance! Drmies (talk) 02:30, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nowruz article

Hey WSC, i would like to alert you of a potential edit war at the Nowruz article, where i'm being told that my three verifiable sources backing the claim that this festival is also observed in Somalia is not enough, or worse is Original Research, please have a look, because, there is clearly WP:OWN going on there. --Scoobycentric (talk) 17:43, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I seems that even a clear note at the top of Nowruz is not enough to remind some users that Nowruz and Nayrouz are not related (neither in etymology, nor in traditions). Alefbe (talk) 19:05, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi this is a long way from being my subject, though I'd love to visit that part of the world. Can I ask you two to try and resolve your differences here, or on the relevant talk page? ϢereSpielChequers 19:34, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WSC - Its very simple actually; I backed a claim with multiple verifiable sources, but two other editors without concrete justications keep removing these references about this festival of Persian origins observed in Somalia during the new year (not the Coptic festival Nayrouz Alefbe disingenously claims my sources are about). Therefore as an uninvolved wikipedian, you can provide a unbiased take on the situation. --Scoobycentric (talk) 20:00, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, if you insist on including it in that page, you should provide a reliable reference that clearly mentions that native Somalians observe the Persian tradition of Nowruz. Just seeing the word "Nayruz" somewhere in some source is not enough (because it might be related to the Coptic feast). If you can provide a reliable source for your claim, first provide the exact quote in talk:Nowruz, so that its relevance can be verified by other editors. Alefbe (talk) 20:16, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all, the sources are pretty straightforward highlighting it's observance in Somalia, from the bonfire traditions to the actual name, and therefore they are most definitely not discussing the Coptic feast. Secondly i would have had no problems discussing this on the article's talkpage, but it was you who reverted me and asked for verifiable refs, which i provided, but then for some strange reason they were all dismissed, on difference of spelling(see the section Also called) or outrageous accusations of me trying to project Original research, or worse with no explanations at all, just see your last revert where you removed FOUR sources for an example. Also i haven't broken the 3RR rule because the majority of my edits were unique and contained new material, this does not equal a revert, because it would be illogical for me to add a source to a removed country. Therefore because of this, i feel there is no need to discuss it on the talkpage, because 1) my sources will be dismissed for the most disingeneous reasons and 2) the editors in question have not shown any sort of good-faith or WP:CIVIL at all so why bother? I will let the admin figure this one out based on the evidence laid bare in this discussion and the history page of the article in question. --Scoobycentric (talk) 20:32, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If the dispute is about whether particular Somalian sources are reliable then the best place to go is the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. If the dispute is about whether Somalians use Nayruz to refer to Nowruz or Nayrouz then you could try for an uninvolved Somali speaker. I'm afraid my ability to count to three in Masaii doesn't qualify me to comment on this aspect of East African culture. But remember words can mean very different things, especially in different languages. ϢereSpielChequers 20:42, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WSC - I understand your situation, but let me make it less complicated for you by providing you with straightforward sources from well respected academics:

I.M Lewis about the observance of this festival in Somalia where it is known locally as Dabshid(literally 'light fire'):

None of these groups had substantial holdings of livestock and their culture(admitting a few domesticated sheep and goats and poultry) was decidely urban and in their rituals, focused primarily on the Sea and the ancient (Pre-Islamic) festival nayrus. - pg 10 Understanding Somalia and Somaliland: culture, history, society By Ioan M. Lewis

In another book he goes even further:

Dabshid is probably of Persian origin and is known alternatively as the Neyrus - Peoples of the Horn of Africa: Somali, Afar, and Saho pg 62

another well respected scholar Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi on Dabshid/Neyrus:

Only one pre-Islamic celebration of importance exists: the dabshid(the

lighting of the fire), which marks the beginning of the Somali solar calendar. The calculation of the start of the solar year is made by weather and stellar experts and has a practical value for stock-breeders and farmers. During the dabshid a small bonfire is lit in the evening and everyone is supposed to try to jump over it. Burning sticks from the bonfire are also thrown into the sky.The dabshid also has been referred to as neyruus, a Persian word for the Persian new year (nairuz), due to the use of fire in dabshid, which early Muslims probably took as a fire worship as was the case among pre-Islamic Persians. There is no other evidence of a relationship between the dabshid

and the Persian nairuz.

Edward A. Alpers after giving a very detailed description of the festival in Somalia noted the following in his book East Africa and the Indian Ocean:

This occasion was probably a Mogadishu variant of the Persian Solar New Year celebrations of Neyruus, which was known locally as Istaqfuroow and Ciid Fircoon(Pharoah's festival) and more widely among the Somaali as Dabshiid - pg 77

Clearly from the sources one can deduce that (1 - none of them are discussing the Coptic festival, (2 - There are many different names for this particular festival in Somalia, but the scholars all agree its a variant of Nowruz. To deny this is comparable to saying that the Roman Apollo does not derive from the Greek Apóllōn . This is not Original research as one person claimed, and hence the 3 reverts by Alefbe of my verifiable sources were unjustified.--Scoobycentric (talk) 21:52, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. OK I see that this sounds more like a presumably Zoroastrian festival than a Coptic one. But I don't see unanimity that this was of the same origin, rather: The dabshid also has been referred to as neyruus, a Persian word for the Persian new year (nairuz), due to the use of fire in dabshid, which early Muslims probably took as a fire worship as was the case among pre-Islamic Persians. There is no other evidence of a relationship between the dabshid and the Persian nairuz. Implies to me that the only relationship we can be sure of between the Somali and Persian festivals was that both involved fire and both were in areas that have since become Moslem. Just because early muslims might have treated all fire worshippers as branches of the same religion doesn't mean they were in fact related, - no more than two tribes of moon worshippers might have been. The other two are probablys, so potentially one could go for a mention along the lines of "Some scholars have postulated a link between the dabshid of Somalia and the Persian Neyruus." But its also worth looking at recency of source, is this still a current theory or has it been dropped along with various theories of non-African origin of African phenomena? ϢereSpielChequers 22:15, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome. The sources date between the 1960s - 2000s and are still very much relevant. You make a good point with the moon worshippers anology, but i think many of the countries currently included would fall under same principle aswell. In the Somali case, the assertion that it was muslims that dubbed it Neyruus is also a probably by the author. I currently don't have access to a very detailed quote from Virginia Luling on this matter who actually studied and celebrated this festival in person, i will have to get an interloan for this specific book. I like your solution though, that would be sufficient for now, but i feel the article is still very much owned, and it's getting to late at this side of the world for a potential edit war, so thanks anyways! --Scoobycentric (talk) 23:05, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Database reports

I noticed you've been doing some work here, do these reports need to be updated manually? Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 14:34, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bernstein Bot refreshes the list once a week. I've not yet done more than a fraction, but I sometimes remove the ones I've done so far to make it more manageable. ϢereSpielChequers 14:59, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 15:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Most likely not, but what request are you referring to? Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 15:34, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

article on David Downes

In an article on David Downes there was infomation on 2 persons with that name. At 13:10 on 19 March 2010, you removed one of them. Since then, an editing struggle has started as your edit gets replaced with the person you removed then getting reverted. Perhaps you'd like to look into that. -Micro- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.112.192.100 (talk) 17:36, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out, I'm terribly sorry, it looks like I protected the wrong version. Now if both were notable we could make two separate articles with hatnotes or possibly a dab page. As it is we need to explain to the fan of the Kiwi chap that reliable sources are needed. ϢereSpielChequers 18:09, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sticky prod

In reply to your query, others have started using it, so I'm sure you can too. It's only through usage that the final wrinkles will be ironed out, particularly regarding what kind of source is needed. SlimVirgin talk contribs 11:56, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SV, nice to see you echoing the words of my post - I take it as a compliment ;) --Kudpung (talk) 13:48, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks guys, but it seems there are still objections to my resuming tagging, and the proposal is at best unstable with even some of the basics being reopened, so I'm going to holdback for now as I've already taken part in one false start on this and don't want to repeat that mistake. ϢereSpielChequers 19:11, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jose Jiminez has been moved

One of the articles you've prodded, Jose Jiminez, has been moved to Jose Jiminez (singer) as Jose Jimenez is a signature alter ego of comedian Bill Dana (and has been for over 50 years). I have dabified the original title. B.Wind (talk) 14:38, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for keeping me informed, seems like a sensible move, and it will be interesting to see how the sticky prod process survives the experience. ϢereSpielChequers 14:44, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BLPPROD MFD

I don't see threats and ultimatums as very productive. We don't delete policies at MFD anyway. On a more positive note, go check out Kingpin's suggestion for a notification bot, that might satisfy both notification camps while leaving it technically optional. Gigs (talk) 00:07, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Things seem to have swung back to a policy I can support so I don't need to know how one does delete a policy for now. ϢereSpielChequers 07:59, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sticky prod

That's fine, I just randomly discovered the actual template was life by guessing at what it may be called and trying to insert it into an appropriate article. If the Twinkle mod ever actually goes live I'll be using that. <>Multi‑Xfer<> (talk) 04:18, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Eff Word!

Dear Spielthingy,

A week ago you asked if I might refrain from using the "f" word in edit summaries. I wonder where you might have me use the "f" word, if not in edit summaries? Crafty (talk) 13:14, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Craftyminion, personally I try to restrict my use of the "f" word to telepathic communications, but as this is an uncensored encyclopaedia I'm sure there are topics where use of the word is appropriate. There are currently 5,883 articles on Wikipedia which contain that word and I would hope that the vast majority do so with good reason. So if you want to use that word on wiki then I'm sure that edits to articles such as this would give such an opportunity. ϢereSpielChequers 13:42, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What about cunt? Is that ok? Crafty (talk)
I'm the farthest admin from civility police there is, but that's enough of your crap. It's obviously being done to prove some point; any more of this shit and I'll block you. Tan | 39 14:24, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category sorting

Just a reminder that the DEFAULTSORT markup is correctly in uppercase with a colon, not lowercase with a pipe, e.g. {{DEFAULTSORT:Kaplan, Erin}}, not {{defaultsort|Kaplan, Erin}}. —Paul A (talk) 04:48, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for pointing out the colon business. Not sure I understand the uppercase/mixed case difference as both seem to work the same, though I take the point that Template:Defaultsort is a redirect to Template:DEFAULTSORT. ϢereSpielChequers 07:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And Template:DEFAULTSORT is itself a redirect – the real DEFAULTSORT is an inbuilt magic word, not a template, which is why it uses a colon. —Paul A (talk) 01:16, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect you tagged something whilst it was being moved and a Computer somewhere threw a wobbly and turned your tag into triplicate. Nothing to worry about, blame it on the server kitties. ϢereSpielChequers 17:17, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

Hey, you've probably already seen it, but since I contacted you for advice a while back, I feel it would be impolite for me not to let you know that Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/HJ Mitchell 2. Of course, you shouldn't feel obliged to participate, but your input (whichever column it goes in) would be quite welcome if you choose to. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:56, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting tactic, if it doesn't quite succeed, and you are currently in the low 80s so it might fail, I suggest you come back to newpage patrol and do some tagging with your new more cautious perspective. If so just remember that it is a team effort, so no one individual need try to keep up with the flow, and if in doubt leave good faith articles for others to judge. We have so many different worldviews amongst us that most new articles will be an obvious call for somebody.

RfA Thanks

I wanted to thank you for participating in my RfA, which succeeded at 134/4/0. I am truly amazed but equally elated by the result and I hope I am able to serve as a good administrator. It was a surreal experience to succeed, and I will strive to meet your expectations.

More specifically, thank you for your support. Ever since this I have improved and I owe that largely to you. Since that RfA failed, you have been helping me to improve. I have a deep admiration for your wisdom and skill, which has guided me for a little over a year now. I owe this successful RfA to you and a few other people who really cared about me.

Thanks! ceranthor 13:15, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Was wondering why Johnny Polygon page is considered for deletion and if there is anything that can be done to make it a better page. Thanks TeamPolygon (talk) 17:35, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
