User talk:Lycaon
Welcome!
Hi Lycaon, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!
- Editing tutorial, learn to have fun with Wikipedia.
- Picture tutorial, instructions on uploading images.
- How to write a great article, to make it an featured article status.
- Manual of Style, how articles should be written.
Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :
Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Leucothoe (genus)
Hi Lycaon - I guess this one needs sorting out (I didn't know about the amphipod of the same name). My proposal is to move the current plant page Leucothoe (genus) to Leucothoe (plant), and transfer your Leucothoe (amphipod) note from there to the Leucothoe page, which is already a disambig page. Re: Peripetus
Hi Lycaon. Right now Peripetus redirects to Peripatus. Is Peripatus a legitimate article? If so, I think we should keep Peripetus, because it could be easily misspelled as such. There are many misspell redirects on Wikipedia, and it is one of the main reason we have redirects. For example, many people don't know how to spell Arnold Schwarzenegger, and if we didn't have redirects, no one could find his article. I hope this explains everything. Let me know if you have any more questions. --Fang Aili 說嗎? 15:16, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
regions used in Template:Africa
Hi, I notice that you and User:E Pluribus Anthony have been reverting each others edits to how countries are assigned to different regions in the template {{africa}}. May I suggest that the two of you discuss this on the template's talk page rather than reverting each other. -- AJR | Talk 17:07, 23 April 2006 (UTC)e
- Thanks; I'm unsure another option is tenable. Regions are conceptual constructs and, thus, vary depending on source and even person: even dictionaries/compendiums yield different location descriptions for any smattering of territories worldwide.
- Upon browsing geographic articles/topics in Wp, I found – and continue to – content that is unsourced and biased. In the quest to equilibrate and, in the least, to organise related content in Wp, the UN subregional scheme – and a neutral, verifiable one at that – obviates (or should!) opining about what country belongs where without the articles and templates degenerating into chaotic free-for-alls. And each of the subregional articles detail varied interpretations of each sub/region ... many of which I've added and, obviously, I do not disagree with (e.g., SADC). FYI: Zambia (née Rhodesia) was once a member of the Central African Federation, so that leaves me to wonder what a Zambian national would really say. :)
- Anyhow, I hope this helps; let me know if you've any questions. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 18:00, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, clearly your wife is biased. :) Thanks! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 01:20, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Species on Family pages
Agreed, & I have made all the changes - let me know if there is anything more to do. I have been doing fish articles, & most do not have very many genera/species per family, so most fit nicely on the family page. Not used to these families with 1,000s of species... One thing I have noticed is the number of families linking to eroneous articles because of common names. There should be a bot to pick family/genera names that link to non-biological articles. Hi Lycaon,
Could you please specify which version you support in Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Hippo pod? Thanks, --Fir0002 08:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Hello Lycaon,
I saw you reverted my edits on Talitridae. I believe the web reference adequetly supported the fact that Talitridae were called scuds; specifically those in the genus Hyalella. How do you define a scud? What Amphipod families fall within the definition? All of them, or just Gammaridae? What references are you using to support your definition?

Fair Use
Fair Use is for images for which it is not possible to find a free alternative ([[WP:FUC] #1). Being a current product this is not something we need to claim fair use for. We should try and find a free picture, or take one. Thanks, ed g2s • talk 18:30, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Caribbean hermit crab
The link that you deleted from this page was meant to document text that I just entered. The population of the West Indian Topshell (snail) effects the population of Purple Pinchers in at least some locations (Bermuda). This snail is the "pica" snail mentioned in an earlier version of this article. OK with you if I put the reference back? - Jangim 18:41, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! The link is restored. I agree about using scientific names. The original text with "pica" was written by someone else. It took some research to figure out what "pica" they meant. The genus Pica refers to birds.
"most of the shells mentioned are not occurring where C. clypeatus lives."
Is there some reason that you didn't leave the other shells? Do you object to having the shell preferences in a separate section?
Graphic maps
Hello Lycaon and thanks for your contribution to the Graphic lab.
For the Vulpes cana map, think that for such maps the png format is better, because it is more widely reconized, and because the png map is 21ko and big enough while the same svg map more than 1000 ko (and scalable, that's true). Looking at the comparative advantages, I think the png map made by Interiot is more convenient for wikipedia. Lycaon, Have you special reasons to prefer svg ?
Voila.

Leopard Vandalism?
how was the link to Mac OS X v10.5 on the leopard page vandalism? The operating system is codenamed leopard, and I, as well as several others, probably were sent to the leopard page by mistake. There are other such links on other pages so I don't see why what I did is considered vandalism.

Attention All Wikigraphists!
A new Wikigraphist Abilities Page has been created within the Graphics Lab so graphists can specify their graphics skills. Graphics Lab Announcement
Attention All Wikigraphists!
As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.
- All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.
- As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.
- Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form
{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}
Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.
- On the Images to Improve Page, an issue was noticed where that when requests were completed, people were adding {{Did}} but forgetting to add <!--werdnabot-archive--> so that the request would be archived. Therefore a template has been created (yes another one!) to help with this. When a user creates a new request instead of putting the usual code, they shall put
{{Request Title|title=Lorem Ipsum|done=false}}. Now when a request is completed, all you will have to do is change done to true
done=true
and the template will add the {{did}} template and also <!--werdnabot-archive--> to the title, so it will get archived.
As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods
Dag Hans,
Groetjes. JoJan (talk) 15:27, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}

All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}}

The image you oppossed
Hi, Hans,
I saw you opposed my crater rainbow image, and I'd like to thank you for this. Not because I believe the image is not good enough to get FP status (it is), but because by some strange and unexplained coincidence as soon as my image is getting opposed as FP either on Commons or on English Wikipedia it is getting published. The crater-rainbow image got published in two magazines so far - in Germany and in India on the cover in both cases. Here's one link
I'd like only to add that IMO your votes as well as votes from some other users very successfully prevent the knowledge of something new and different from reaching Wikipedia readers.
Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 04:05, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
One more time about FPC
Hi Hans,
I even do not know why I am writing to you again , why I'm loosing mine and your time. I know all my arguments will fall on the dead ears, yet I'll try one more time. I do not know how I can stress hard enough that IMO, if sunset like this gets rejected, and sunset like this gets rejected, and sunset like this gets rejected while sunsets like this with negative encyclopedic value gets promoted there's something wrong with FP process in general. IMO it does not work. BTW one more of my images that you opposed, the one of Milky Way, Zodiacal light and a meteor was published the book in the middle. Please notice I do not write you about all my images that were opposed by you and other users, and got published (the list would have been much too long). So I brought up only two examples with my image published on a cover. I'm sorry I wrote you this message. I assume you do not like it. Please, do not worry, I've made my point and will not bother you with this matter ever again.Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:10, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Lycaon! How nice to meet you. Thanks so much for letting me know about your images. I will certainly use the images of Arctica islandica, Glycymeris glycymeris and Mactra corallina right away, and I will go on to use many others of your pre-existing images bit by bit, as I start in on more stub articles for marine mollusks. (Recently I have been working with User:Snek01 a lot on land snails.) It looks as if you have been in the Caribbean area as well as Northern Europe. Where were your Caribbean images taken if you don't mind my asking? A wish list, what a great idea, I will start to put one together, thanks so much for suggesting it. Off-hand I can say that one genus of marine mollusk I would like an image for, even just a shell image, is Aporrhais. A. pespelicani would be nice, but I will take whatever I can get. In terms of more difficult species to find, a better picture that the one we currently have of any of the Onchidiidae would be great. Also there are no pics on the web of living Otinidae. Even an image of the shell of Otina, for example Otina ovata, which you have in Belgium, would be great to have on WP. I will do some more thinking and come back to you with a more complete wish list. Many thanks and all good wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 15:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

VI
Hi Hans, I saw your oppose on my VI nomination. IMO it is just a litlle bit too much. Even, if Herby will ever take pictures of the remaining crosses, who could say, which one should be VI. Even from the ones that are available on Commons now is hard to say which one is the most valuable. Each and every one of them is very valuable in its own way. Should we change the scope to "Crazywell cross"? IMO, your oppose reason could be applied to almost every VI. Let's say I am to nominate one of my green flash images. Who could tell me which one is VI, if I myself cannot tell this. Hans, IMO your oppose vote is not valid. IMO, if you like to oppose the image, it maight be better to use a different reason. May I please ask you to respond this message? Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:18, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Mila. Well, this is a bit of a tough one. Of course the picture is good and valuable, but as Herby mentioned, there are 10 or 12 crosses along that particular trail. That is an ideal opportunity to feature (value) them all in a VI set. As you said yourself, it would be hard to single one out to reward it with the VI label. It is not to big a deal to wait for summer (or spring?) when Herby can finish his collection of crosses. The comparison with the green flashes doesn't cut wood: those are not part of a well defined series or set.
- Secondly (but only minor), a VI has to fulfil all six criteria and the assessment has to at least partly address that. My compatriot Foroa's remark was, while quite acceptable for e.g. an FP nomination, IMO off the mark for VIC. Hope this clarifies my motivations. Lycaon (talk) 15:30, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hans, thank you so much for responding my message. The thing is that there are 10-12 crosses on the track, but there are 151 crosses in Dartmoor. Every one of them would have a category Dartmoor crosses and the same scope.
- Yep you have a point there. I still haven't decided how to proceed yet. Maybe ask Eusebius for a second (third) opinion? Or Herby? Lycaon (talk) 16:25, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hans, may I please ask you how long it usually takes to delete the image that was nominated for speedy for copy vio on Commons? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 16:14, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Depends, could be minutes could be max 7 days. You want a hand? Lycaon (talk) 16:25, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hans, thank you so much for responding my message. The thing is that there are 10-12 crosses on the track, but there are 151 crosses in Dartmoor. Every one of them would have a category Dartmoor crosses and the same scope.
I guess I cannot ask anybody now because I enforced my break on Commons and cannot do anything on Commons until 02/06/09.--Mbz1 (talk) 16:49, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, it will be nice, if you could delete the image from the last post on my Commons talk page, and thank you for being so nice to me!--Mbz1 (talk) 16:49, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you!--Mbz1 (talk) 18:28, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Hans, I'm sorry to bother you one more time, but I just thought that maybe because I cannot edit Commons untill 2/6/09 and then it will be too late, maybe you'll be kind enough to post the comment for me on This VI nomination in the response to your own comment? I mean this one:
The thing is that there are 10-12 crosses on the track, but there are 151 crosses in Dartmoor. Every one of them would have a category Dartmoor crosses and the same scope.
and then of course you might post your own response: "Yep you have a point there." and change your oppose to support :=) (I'm kidding), but it will be great, if you would post my comment there. I hope this will be OK because this time I was not blocked, but rather blocked myself :=)
Thank you for your time!--Mbz1 (talk) 06:05, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
May I ask for a favor, please?
Hi Hans. One more time I enforced my break on Commons, and then I realized I forgot to tell something important about the comet.May I please ask you to copy my text and paste it after vote by Tiago Fioreze in alternative 1? Here's the text:
"This was a very special comet. The comet was visible for few months in a row, but the tail was seen only in very strong scopes and only for few days. This is because during the comet's outburst, its orbit took it to near opposition with respect to Earth, and since comet tails point away from the Sun, Earth observers were looking nearly straight down along the tail of 17/P Holmes, making the comet appear as a bright sphere, which was kind of cool. Maybe this comet did not look as a comet, but it did look as UFO."
Thank you for your time, and if you do not feel comfortobale doing this, please do not.--Mbz1 (talk) 19:06, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Chizongwe Secondary School
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Chizongwe Secondary School, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:
- completely unsourced, removed unsourced material put back without sources
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. -- Jeandré, 2009-02-22t15:11z 15:11, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Rubbish. It is one of the top five secondary schools in Zambia. I know, I taught there for three years. You want to propose deleting all American secondary schools too? Sources were there at the time when I entered them. Are you going to discriminate towards the less than perfect African internet situation? Lycaon (talk) 13:08, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Could you please give me a hand?
Hi Hans, I'd like to ask for your help please. Two of my FP nominations on Commons were clossed.
[Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Refraction of GGB in rain droplets 2.jpg Here's first] and [Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Iceberg with hole edit.jpg second], but FP template was not added to the images, and I did not get promotion notifications on my talk page. In my current status on Commons I would really like to get these notifications :). Thank you for your time.--mbz1 (talk) 14:23, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Misunderstanding on VPC Caribbean hermit crab?
I made a reply here. Maybe a misunderstanding? This nom is closing pretty soon and I need your input asap. VP is lacking votes and I don't want my nom to fail for such stupid reason (not you, the lack of votes ;) ZooFari 00:18, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ouch sorry, saw this too late! Can you resubmit? This was indeed a misunderstanding :-((. My vote should've been a support one. Lycaon (talk) 00:06, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Why Oh Why?
Why you break my heart so [2], Lycaon? Just because your picture it's prettier? huh?. I told my mom I had a picture in wikipedia!!!, now what I am suppose to tell her???. :P Wilianz (talk) 10:57, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Accusation of Vandalism
Were you mistaken or are you a liar? CyrilThePig4 (talk) 19:45, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- I have raised the matter at Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts Here CyrilThePig4 (talk) 20:18, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- I was not mistaken. Your actions, avoiding consensus, constitute blatant vandalism. I you know better than the biologists around, then I will let you draw your own conclusions. You will comply eventually, be it sadly not through my efforts to keep up the scientific and resourced standards. Shalenipo. Lycaon (talk) 20:56, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Nice to be in touch with you again!
Hello Lycaon, thanks for your message! I am glad to see that you are still active in some parts of the Wiki galaxy. I miss you a lot in the VI project, but not only, and not alone. Regards, --Myrabella (talk) 12:54, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello Lycaon, May I ask you to help me to identify this jellyfish? The photo isn't very good, but I'd like to know the name of this little ghost :-) With kind regards, --Myrabella (talk) 00:54, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- A message just to tell you, in a discreet way, that I am truly happy that you're coming back, and again so active, especially in the Valued Images project. --Myrabella (talk) 10:49, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Because you've contributed to FPC either recently or in the past, I'm letting you know about the above poll on the basis of which we may develop proposals to change our procedures and criteria. Regards, Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 09:31, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Last Edit
I don't see any relevance in the last paragraph of the Atoll article. Therefore, I don't believe my last edit was unconstructive, but was merely clean-up.
