The 2012 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 5 or the IPL 2012 or the DLF IPL 2012 (owing to title sponsorship reasons), is the fifth season of the Indian Premier League, initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)[2] in 2007 with the first season played in 2008. The tournament began on 4 April and will end on 27 May 2012.[3] This season the number of teams in the league went from ten to nine with the termination of Kochi Tuskers Kerala.[4]
Upon progression, the season was criticized for its decreased TV viewership compared to the previous seasons. This edition of the IPL has been the most competitive with 14 matches producing results in the last over.[5][6] Almost at the end of the season, the season faced various hurdles including a spot fixing case, which allegedly included 5 players caught on a sting operation carried on by a local news channel.
Termination of Kochi
The IPL Committee terminated the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise after breaching the BCCI's terms of conditions. Under the terms of the agreement, each franchise has to submit a bank guarantee every year that covers the fee payable to the BCCI. The team, founded in 2010, was bought for ₹ 1,550 crore and the consortium has to pay a bank guarantee of ₹156 crore every year till 2020.[7] However, KTK's former players will participate in this season's competition after being listed on list of players to be auctioned in the Players' Auction on 4 February 2012.
On 13 January, the BCCI asked the international players of Kochi Tuskers Kerala to register individual court cases against the owners of the Kochi IPL team with the BCCI included as a party to each case.[8]

Playoff stage
On 15 March, the IPL announced that due to the municipal election in Delhi, the playoff schedule was being slightly altered.[14] The sites of the 22 and 23 May matches were swapped, with Pune now hosting the match on 22 May and Bengaluru hosting the match on 23 May. Which match occurs on each date depends on the placement of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final table. If Challengers finish first or second, the Eliminator (third v. fourth places) will be on 22 May and the First Qualifier (first v. second) will be on 23 May. If Challengers finish third or lower, the First Qualifier will be on 22 May and the Eliminator will be on 23 May.[15]

Criticism and controversy
- Viewership
The first matches of the season had recorded an average Television Viewership Rating (TVR) of 3.76, 18.7% less than the previous season.[25] The viewership was also reportedly low for the opening ceremony with a rating of 1.3 TVR.[26] The downfall was attributed to the number of matches being played, as the count stands at 76 among 9 teams.[27] The rating continued to fall as the cumulative number of people who tuned in to watch the first 16 games also declined from 127.40 million in 2011 to 122.44 million. The 12th match played between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals drew the highest rating of the season with a rating of 5.2, as of 20 April.[28]
- Spot fixing
On 14 May 2012, an Indian news channel India TV aired a sting operation which accused five players involved in spot fixing. Reacting to the news, BCCI president Rajiv Shukla immediately suspended all the five:[29] Mohnish Mishra, Shalabh Srivastava, TP Sudhindra, Amit Yadav and Abhinav Bali (none of which had played international cricket).[30] However, the report went on to claim that none of the cricketers were found guilty. On the reliability of the report, Rajat Sharma, the editor-in-chief of news channel India TV quoted that the channel had no doubts about the authenticity of the sting operation and prepared to go to court.[31]
Mohnish Mishra who was part of Pune Warriors India team for the season, admitted to have said that franchises pay black money, in a sting operation. Mishra was caught on tape saying that franchisees paid them black money and that he had received ₹1.5 crore (US$180,000) from the later, among which ₹1.2 crore (US$140,000)[32] was black money.[33][34] He was also suspended from his team.[35]
- Other charges
Shah Rukh Khan, owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, received a five-year ban from the Wankhede Stadium for arguing with security at the ground after a match on 16 May.[36]
On 18 May, Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Luke Pomersbach was arrested on charges of molesting an American women.[37] He was later granted interim bail.[38]
