Allama Iqbal Medical College (Urdu:علامہ اقبال میڈیکل کالج لاہور ), established in 1975, is a public school of medicine, nursing and allied health sciences located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Jinnah hospital is attached to the college as a teaching hospital. Today Allama Iqbal Medical Complex has a campus spread over an area of 105 acres (424921 m²).

History

Founder Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is the founder of the Allama Iqbal Medical College and he inaugurated the Allama Iqbal Medical College. It was formerly called Lahore Medical College, located in a portion of small building of the College of Community Medicine at Birdwood Road, Lahore. This college is now housed in its new campus adjacent to the Punjab University (New Campus Faisal Town). The first Principal of this college was Prof. A. H. Awan. This college was first affiliated to the University of the Punjab, Lahore but as of 2009 it became officially affiliated with University of Health Sciences.

Campus

Allama Iqbal Medical Complex has a campus spread over an area of 105 acres (0.42 km2). The campus includes buildings for administration,departments of basic and clinical sciences and a mosque. There are schools for medicine, nursing and physiotherapy. The college has sports facilities including floodlit tennis courts, floodlit cricket stadium, field with tracks and bleachers, segregated gymnasiums and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. In 2010, the Principal Javed Akram inaugurated Hashim Shaheen Mall, which includes a barber shop, beauty salon, fruit shop, fast food outlet, and general store to facilitate the students.

Dormitories

The college has seven dormitories (or hostels) for accommodation of students, professionals and other hospital residents.

  • Three hostels for male students
  • Two hostels for female students
  • One hostel for male professionals
  • One hostel for female professionals

Each hostel has 112 rooms. Cubes (single person) are allotted for boys and girls from 4th and Final Year and bi-sitter (two persons) from first year's permanent allotment. Each cubical room is more than 12x14 feet, bi-sitter is double and tetra-room is four times in size.

There are three main undergraduate qualifications offered at AIMC under University of Health Sciences.

  • School of Medicine offers Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
  • School of Nursing offers Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing
  • School of Physiotherapy offers Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physiotherapy

  • Master of Surgery (MS)

Research

Students of Allama Iqbal Medical College worked under three recognized departments of college, named Biochemistry, Pathology and Medicine in Research fields. College has just announced its tri-monthly journal of research called AIJE.[1]

Following are some student bodies and unions in Allama Iqbal Medical College.

Currently no student union is allowed in the college but societies and clubs are allowed. However the very first students union elections were held in 1979 during martial law times. A very dynamic group of elected student leaders worked very hard. First general secretary was Ashraf Chohan. He managed to achieve 3 hostels 4 buses and recongnition of the college in the UK. He was the first FRCS from the college from Royal college of surgeons. He became then an MPA (member of the Punjab assembly). There were only 2 students unions till the time of writing these lines (2011).

Publications

  • College published its annual research paper named Journal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, under supervision of Principal Javed Akram.
  • Allama Iqbal Medical College has its annual college magazine, Shaheen, maintained by students. Current President for Shaheen Magazine is Prof. Dr. Arif Tajammul, Vice President is Prof. Dr. Mehmood Nasir Malik and Editor in Chief for 2011 is Muhammad Faizan Ali.[6]
