The University of Chittagong (Chittagong University, CU, Template:Lang-bn) is a public university situated at the suburban area of Hathazari, Chittagong district, Bangladesh. The university was established in 1966. The campus is 22 km north of Chittagong city. The University of Chittagong is surrounded by hills, and bisected by a small stream which made this university a famous tourist spot across the country.It is a multidisciplinary research university. The university ranks among the top public and private universities of Bangladesh. Currently, it is the third largest University in Bangladesh with more than 20,000 students and about 800 faculty members.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus,[1] who used to be a faculty member of this university, the founder of Grameen Bank, the pioneering figure in Microcredit theory of Economics, and the 2006 winner of Nobel Prize in peace, started his first microcredit experiments from this very campus at the neighbouring village of Zobra. Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam, a notable mathematician and physicist.

Early days
On 3 December 1965, Professor A R Mallick (1918–97),[2] as project Director, inaugurated the work of founding the Chittagong University with only three employees, one typewriter, and a photocopier in a house on Road 3 of Chittagong City's Nasirabad Housing Society. The Chittagong University Ordinance was promulgated on 25 September 1966 and Professor Mallick was given the charge of Vice Chancellor on that very day. He assumed charge as the first Vice Chancellor of the university on 9 October 1966.
The university started its academic programme on 28 November with classes of MA (Preliminary) programme with only 200 students in the departments of Bengali, English, History and Economics under the faculty of Arts. After a short while Medical, Engineering, Law, and Education Colleges situated outside the university campus were incorporated as separate faculties, and thus the university's educational activities kept expanding.

It offers 4 Year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and 1 Year Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degrees under the faculty of Business Administration, 4 Year Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) and 1 Year Masters of Social Science (MSS) degrees under the Faculty of Social Science, 4 Year Bachelor of Arts (BA) and 1 Year Masters of Arts (MA) degrees under the faculty of Arts, 4 Year LLB and 1 Year LLM degree under the Faculty of Law. The university also offers 2 Year MS, 2 Year MPhil and 3 Year PhD degree by research.The engineering faculty has been active this year(2013).Consisting of two departments.It is offering Bsc(Eng)in Applied physics Electronics&Communication Engineering & Computer science&engineering.
Chittagong University is the pioneer to offer 4 year BBA, BSc(Hons) in Forestry, Environmental Sciences, and Marine Science in Bangladesh. CU is the first university in the Indian Sub-Continent to have started a BBA Program. The university is also reputed for its Law Faculty. The law graduates from Chittagong University have already proved themselves in various competitive exams like Judiciary Service Commission's (JSC) exam, Bar Council's exam, BCS exam, and many other corporate recruitment tests. CU Law Faculty is considered as the best law Institution among the students of Bangladesh.
Due to growing demand of its MBA, in February 2012, the university authority started to offer another MBA program under a newly established business wing namely Center for Business Studies (CBS). Faculty of Business Administration of CU launched the Center for Business Studies (CBS) at its Chittagong City campus as an affiliated center for Professionals. CBS offers the two year Evening MBA Program for Graduates from different disciplines. University Grant Commission (UGC), Academic Council and Syndicate team have already approved the CBS; it started its journey in February 2012 towards being a Center of Excellence. In 2011-12 session, CU opened three new departments namely Applied and Environmental Chemistry, Pharmacy and Persian Language.
Medium of instruction
The medium of instruction English, except for departments such as Bengali, Arabic etc. Some faculties approve both English and Bengali as medium of instruction. In this respect it is up to the students to choose any of the languages they feel comfortable with in their studies.

Research works & Research Centers
Most of the faculty members take keen interest in research work to build their professional career. To facilitate the research activities, Research Cell at Science, Nazrul Research Centre and Bureau of Business Research have been operating. Funds are also procured from outside research organizations by the faculty members to continue research in their own fields of study. Some faculty members have earned reputations for their outstanding research works resulting in the development of new technologies. The number of higher-degree research students is on the increase day by day. The University of Chittagong is dedicated to the advancement of learning and is committed to promote research in all fields of knowledge. New research projects are undertaken every year. Research journals are also published by individual departments. Most importantly, the University’s research enterprise is devoted to the search for knowledge and truth that upholds the University’s commitment to education. This combination of activities strengthens the University’s mission of service resulting in the continued improvement of quality of life for the citizens of Bangladesh and the rest of the world.

Bengali, English, French, German, Arabic,Japanese and many other language courses are offered in this institute. One year certificate courses and one and a half year diploma courses are conducted at low costs.
Central Library
The Chittagong University Library is situated in the University Campus which was inaugurated in the month of November, 1966 in a temporary building.[11] In 1990, the library was shifted to its own building. At present, the total floor area of the library is 56,700 sq ft. It is the central point of the University Campus having being surrounded by the halls of residence and different faculty buildings.Library is managed by the Library Committee consisting of 14 members including Deans of all faculties headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor as its Chairman. Librarian is the Member-Secretary of the committee. The committee frames policies and provides necessary instructions for smooth functioning of the library from time to time.
At present, the library collection consists of about 3.5 lakh volumes of books and over 40,000 bound volumes of journals. There are Reference and Rare collection also. It has the largest collection of books in entire Chittagong division.A Resource Center for the Visually Impaired Students has been established in the Chittagong University Library. The Centre contains modern library facilities for the visually impaired students of the University. There are systems of book loan and inter-library loan. Library provides Current Awareness Service, Photocopy Service, CD-ROM Search Service, Internet Service, Online Journal Search Service etc. At present, the library is the subscriber of a number of reputed Online Journals, allowing searching and downloading at over 12 thousand journals to its users.
Library is a prime requisite for successful implementation of academic programs of the University. The Chittagong University Library functions in order to fulfill the aims and objectives of its parent body university.

Library Hours
The Library Reader’s Service Is Open From 9 am to 9 pm Saturday to Thursday. The Library remains closed is Friday. Therefore every Department have their own Seminar Library service affiliated to the central library which is open in Academic days from 9.30 am to 4 pm.

A dormitory is called a Hall in the university. Students admitted to the Departments and Institutes of the University have either to reside in or be attached to a hall of residence. The University has 7 halls for male and 3 for female students. The administration of a hall is headed by a Provost who is assisted by a number of House Tutors.

Library
The University Library is one of the biggest in Bangladesh. The Library holds a collection of more than 3.5 lakh volumes, including bound volumes of periodicals. In addition, it has a collection of manuscripts on various languages and a large number of microfilms, microfiche and CDs. It subscribes good number of current reputed journals.
Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired Students
A Resource Center for the Visually Impaired Students has been established in the Chittagong University Library. The Centre contains modern library facilities for the visually impaired students of the University.
Health Services: Medical Centre
The Medical Centre of the University of Chittagong, located near the Law Faculty Building, offers free medical service and free pathological examinations to students, teachers and staffs of the University and also family members of the teachers and staffs. The Centre provides service round the clock, seven days a week, with doctors working in different shifts. The Centre also has eleven doctors and four ambulances. The Centre has in its premises a temporary arrangement for 6 bed accommodation.
Sports and Extracurricular Activities
The Department of Physical Education started its Activities since 1966 form the very begging of Chittagong University. Department has very good reputation all through its duration of activities in the fields of games and sports in Intramural Extramural National games and sports. The Department has its own qualified Physical Educationist and coaches trained form home and abroad. The activities of the Department and Annual program are decided in collaboration with adviser committee headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor. other than games and sports The Department organize several coaching program for all selected team of different games like Cricket, Handball, Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball, Football, Hockey Athletics Badminton, Table Tennis Gymnastics, Swimming, Water Polo, Chess, Carom etc. Department also issue the certificate to qualified Athlete and players. University Authority provides some Stipend and Free-studentship for selected students.
Department and University Authority and also provide University "Blue" for very good and excellent Athlete and players student. The University Authority provide a facility name "Players Quota" for the 30 talented students with some special quality to admit in different subjects in all faculties. Form the year of 2011 University syndicate decided to start a course Named Diploma in Physical Education (D.P.Ed.) Equivalent to Bachelor of Physical Education under the faculty of social science one year course organized by Department Of Physical Education Chittagong University. University Authority are going to start construction of modern gymnasium form 2011, adjacent to the central play ground. There are play ground's in the most of the residential Hall and improvised Swimming Pool and other grounds for Respective games.
Intramural and Extramural Programme (Games and Sports)
The Directorate also organizes and conducts inter-department and inter-hall tournaments, individual hall athletics, Chittagong University athletics, and Inter- University games and sports. University students participate in national championships in different games and sports for which prior training and coaching are offered.
Cafeteria
There are faculty wise cafeterias in the campus of University of Chittagong. Chaksu has a Cafeteria for students. Therefore campuses famous Jhupri or stalls are place where students & teachers used to talk & Eat. This place is regarded as the hub of intellectual center of the University & most famous of them is Arts Faculty Jhupri.
Transport
University of Chittagong has transport services for students. Students can travel to the University Campus by Shuttle Trains from the City. Besides, bus service is always available even on university holidays, to help those students who come to university for library or teacher's council.Chittagong can be reached from the capital city of Dhaka by air, train and road. The most pleasant time for traveling to Chittagong is between August and early March as it can be very humid and wet from April to July due to torrid summer days and heavy monsoon rains. The city has some good hotels available at modest rates, about US$ 10-70 per day. The University guest house has a limited number of rooms where guests can reside by advance booking. It takes 40–50 minutes to reach the campus from Chittagong city by car or bus. During on-session a 10-compartment university train shuttles between the city and the campus several times every day. Recently, Mini-bus services between the city and campus have been introduced.

IT-FACILITIES
Faster Internet Connection: Now internet connection is too much faster in the University of Chittagong. ICT Center of CU has completed setup to increase internet bandwidth (uploading & downloading) from 4Mbit/s/4Mbit/s to 30Mbit/s/30Mbit/s. This service is provided by BTCL through direct optical connectivity. The facilities of this connection are provided in different departments, institutes, research centers and offices through inter-campus optical connectivity.
Other Facilities
Though cost of study for a student at Chittagong University is practically negligible, but lodging in the students dormitories can be expensive. Scholarship scheme and stipends are offered to students of outstanding caliber. Post-graduate research scholarships have also been introduced. Students seeking admission to the university should contact the concerned office as per advertisement published in the national and the local dailies.
Other Activities
University has Bangladesh National Cadet Corps and Rover Scout for students to develop students' leading and social service capability. Recently[when?], a group of students of Journalism Department of Chittagong University developed country's first campus based online news paper.[12]
Publication
All the faculties publish a research journal of the common title The Chittagong University Studies (now renamed Chittagong University Journal) distinguished by the name of the individual faculty suffixed to it. Chittagong University Journal of Arts, Chittagong University Journal of Social Science, Chittagong University Journal of Business and Chittagong University Journal of Law come out once or twice a year.
Each of the six internal faculties of the university brings out separate research journal annually which publishes standard research or creative articles based on favourable recommendations of at least two experts for each paper nominated by the editorial board of the concerned journal. There is a publication cell consisting of senior faculty members which can recommend the publication of standard textbooks or higher degree research dissertations. The university allocates fund to the Research Centre, Nazrul Research Centre and Bureau of Business Research to initiate small research projects to be done by the teachers. Over the years, the faculty members of this university have earned reputation by publishing a lot of research papers in the national and international journals. Some of them have also completed a large number of research monographs in their respective branches of knowledge and possess, to their credit, invaluable experiences of working as national experts.

Students' organizations include:
- Chittagong University Debating Society(CUDS),[13] is the Central Debating Organization of the Varsity,has impressive achievements in National and International debating Competition.
- Chittagong University Abritty Moncha is an recitation organization,
- Nikkon is organization of recite, presentation.
These organizations conduct relevant courses.
- Chittagong University Astronomic Association is an organization of astronomic news, documentaries etc.
There are some other department wise student organizations in the university. Mention may be made of FBDA (Finance & Banking Debating Association) of the Department of Finance & Banking and SLP (Society for Leadership Proliferation) of the Department of Marketing.
Alumni Association
Business Administration Society, University of Chittagong <*http://www.businessadministrationsociety.org/> Business Administration Society, University of Chittagong (BASUC) is the Alumni association of the Faculty of Business Administration. The association, since its inception on February 15, 2008 - have been working with the faculty to bridge the Alumni and the current students. BASUC organizes various development programs. This year in 2012, they supported the Faculty and Dean office to hold day-long Job Fair event bringing more than 15 organizations and several C-level executives in the program.
Chittagong University Ex-students Club, Dhaka - a club of ex-students situated in Dhaka. The club organizes reunion and facilitates friendships among the members.
Social service of students
Students join local and international organizations to serve society. Some local organizations are Rotaract club of Chittagong University, Red Crescent, quantum foundation. Some national organizations are Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC), United Nations Youth Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB).

Natural Beauty
Tree Plantation
More than 400 acres of land have already been brought under tree plantation programme. These plantations are mainly used for research and to put a vegetation cover on the campus. More than 200 tree species of both indigenous and exotic nature have already been planted in the campus. There is also a plan to conserve the threatened and endangered species in the campus through these plantation programmes. The Institute of Forestry & Environmental Sciences and the Department of Botany are mainly taking care of the plantation programmes on the campus. Various private organizations are often permitted to take part in tree plantation.
Animal Life
The campus is also very rich with diverse species of animals and birds. At least 130 species of birds have been found. A list of wildlife and insects is under preparation. With the afforestation programme, the diversity of animal life has also been increasing gradually. People residing in the campus can enjoy the melodious sounds of different types of birds and animals at different times. The university authority adheres to the policy of preserving as well as extending the facilities for wildlife in the campus
Botanical Garden
An ideal botanical garden has been established on the southern side of the university campus over an area of 60 acres of undulated land for the conservation of both indigenous and exotic plant species of academic and aesthetic interests. More than 10,000 plants of about 400 species comprising over 150 families of both exotic and indigenous species of timber, medicinal, fruits, spices, beverage, latex, orchids, novelty etc. have been preserved or are growing naturally and used as experimental materials. About 72 species of orchids and a good number of rare shade plants have been conserved in the Orchidarium and Conservatory House respectively. At present, new management policy has been formulated to give it a sustainable shape both for academic and aesthetic aspects. The Department of Botany has also been associated with roadside plantation of the university.
