Thank you for being one of Wikipedia's top medical contributors!

please help translate this message into the local language
The Cure Award
In 2013 you were one of the top 300 medical editors across any language of Wikipedia. Thank you so much for helping bring free, complete, accurate, up-to-date medical information to the public. We really appreciate you and the vital work you do!

We are wondering about the educational background of our top medical editors. Would you please complete a quick 5-question survey? (please only fill this out if you received the award)

Thanks again :) --Ocaasi, Doc James and the team at Wiki Project Med Foundation

Thank you for the honor I've completed the linked survey. Mikael Häggström (talk) 05:00, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Steroidogenesis diagram popular at Adrenal conference.

Hi Mikael,

I just heard from my old biochemistry colleagues that (y)our diagram was used in a number of presentations at the Adrenal conference. --Slashme (talk) 20:18, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's nice to hear that they found it accurate enough to use Mikael Häggström (talk) 04:40, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! I like your Wikiversity citation suggestion. That certainly makes citations fit into the standard citation model more conveniently. And wait, we now have templates for smileys? How droll !

It's the most useful template in entire Wikipedia in my opinion Anyhow, I'm currently using my own gallery as a pilot project to assign one doi code for multiple images. I'll let you know if it works out, because I think it can be used for several other medical images in your gallery as well. After all, people should not always use images from Wikipedia, but when they do, they should at least have a proper citation format. Mikael Häggström (talk) 19:25, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The trial to get multiple images assigned by a single doi was a success, so I've left a suggestion at your talk page to include some images of yours as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:34, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for the reference! I hope you find it fitting in the Ebola article. Mikael Häggström (talk) 20:09, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help write something?

Since you've done some work on literally Everything, I was wondering if you could help build an article on the rather abstract concept of Something. Cheers! bd2412 T 03:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is a pleasure to finally see an article about something In the Something (disambiguation) I found the Existential quantification article which I thought deserved mentioning in the Something (concept) article, although frankly I found it a bit too complex to fully understand. New numbers

Hi Mikael, sorry new numbers. Could you update please. You are welcome to email the original file and i will assist briangroenenstein@gmail.com. greetings Brian BrianGroen (talk) 18:17, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate some help with the update with such frequent updates. I can do it about twice per week, but if you want it update already now you can access the original file at Commons:File:2014 ebola virus epidemic in West Africa.svg. The steps to make an update are as follows:
  • Download the file
  • Open it in a vector graphics editor. If you use Inkscape, it goes as follows:
    • Open the file and double-click on the numbers to be change to edit them.
  • Click the File menu, then Export bitmap. I use "Export area:Page" and "pixels at 300dpi"
  • Click the upload page: [2], and upload the new image.
  • Preferably, also update the Commons:File:2014 ebola virus epidemic in West Africa.svg version as well.
I added this description to File:2014 Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa.png as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:45, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Now, seeing that the new numbers are 4 days ahead, I made an update. Mikael Häggström (talk) 08:57, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
::: Thanks Mikael, sorry recieved 17 sept numbers today.. Will assist in future.. Kind regards BrianGroen (talk) 10:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Feature – Ebola articles

Electron micrograph of an Ebola virus virion

During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

Just some of our over 60 translations:
New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

LINK COLOURS

Hey mate I came across your page regarding link colours and was wondering if you knew how to turn colours off completely. I don't really like and want it to stay blue, wondering how to stop it? Any help would be appreciated, if you've got the time?? :-)

You can always copy-paste all the text of an article into a Notepad document if you don't want any formatting of the text. Mikael Häggström (talk) 17:59, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

drug side effects

Mikael -

Do you have any drug side effects drawing for any on the common durgs for hypertension? Thanks, your work is great. Cphensley (talk) 08:27, 22 December 2014 (UTC) Preston[reply]

Thank you There are no pictures of side effects of any antihypertensive so far in this collection. You can easily make a couple yourself with for example Inkscape. There's a description of how to do it at Commons:Template:Human body diagrams. Mikael Häggström (talk) 19:51, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I must have been to tired to come up with words for those last sentences. Otherwise, I don't think it's close enough to risk a copyright infringement, but I nevertheless did some rewording where I could. Mikael Häggström (talk) 20:25, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Other issues

Look at this edit [6]

You added "Pregnancies after gastric bypass surgery, as compared with matched control pregnancies in a Swedish study, were associated with lower risks of gestational diabetes (1.9% vs. 6.8, odds ratio 0.25), and babies being large for gestational age (8.6% vs. 22.4%, odds ratio 0.33). On the other hand, they were associated with a higher risk of babies being small for gestational age (15.6% vs. 7.6%, odds ratio 2.20). The risk of preterm birth was not significantly different (odds ratio of a 95% confidence interval of 0.92 to 1.78). The risk of stillbirth or neonatal death was 1.7% versus 0.7% (odds ratio, 2.39 with a 95% confidence interval 0.98 to 5.85)."

Ref says "Pregnancies after bariatric surgery, as compared with matched control pregnancies, were associated with lower risks of gestational diabetes (1.9% vs. 6.8%; odds ratio, 0.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.13 to 0.47; P<0.001) and large-for-gestational-age infants (8.6% vs. 22.4%; odds ratio, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.44; P<0.001). In contrast, they were associated with a higher risk of small-for-gestational-age infants (15.6% vs. 7.6%; odds ratio, 2.20; 95% CI, 1.64 to 2.95; P<0.001) and shorter gestation (273.0 vs. 277.5 days; mean difference −4.5 days; 95% CI, −2.9 to −6.0; P<0.001), although the risk of preterm birth was not significantly different (10.0% vs. 7.5%; odds ratio, 1.28; 95% CI, 0.92 to 1.78; P=0.15). The risk of stillbirth or neonatal death was 1.7% versus 0.7% (odds ratio, 2.39; 95% CI, 0.98 to 5.85; P=0.06). There was no significant between-group difference in the frequency of congenital malformations"

This is not summarized / paraphrased nearly enough? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 20:36, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I should have made a table instead, or, since it's a primary source anyway, let it be. Anyhow, thanks for pointing out these issues. Mikael Häggström (talk) 20:25, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Secondary sources

Also what is with the adding of primary sources such as here [7]? We should be using high quality secondary sources per WP:MEDRS Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 20:41, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking the prestige and influence of The New England Journal of Medicine motivates using it as a primary source, but very well, I will now stop my subscription to it for the purpose of adding content to Wikipedia. Mikael Häggström (talk) 20:08, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The NEJM does publish some great review articles. Those can typically be used dozens of time. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:23, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

nail matrix / nail bed quandary

I see that I have stumbled into making the opposite judgement to the one you made, about fingernail illustrations... The one that shows an extensive flat area of nail matrix, in the nail bed plane, (rather than just pointing at the root) seems more consistent with everything I am reading about the matrix. Can we find some truly authoritative anatomy illustrations to clarify this issue? And are you agreeable to leaving both illustrations in the nail matrix article until we can be sure which is right? -71.174.183.177 (talk) 21:53, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
