Newsy is a video news network and a cable news channel[1] that produces short-form video news pieces that provide breaking news and updates across U.S., and world news, policy, politics, science and health, entertainment, technology, business, and sports. Newsy was founded by Jim Spencer in 2008 and acquired by the E.W. Scripps Company for $35 million on January 1, 2014. Today, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of the E.W. Scripps Company.[2][3]
History
Online
E.W. Scripps Company bought the company in December 2013.[2][3] Newsy video content is available in on-demand and linear formats on over-the-top (OTT) services television through YouTubeTV and Sling TV and at newsy.com.[4][5] The company won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for its news documentary,The War and Money Project, in 2015.[6]
Newsy is headquartered in Columbia, Missouri. It has four other U.S.-based offices in Chicago, Cincinnati, New York City, and Washington, D.C..[7] In 2016, Newsy launched its Brand Studio, which offers brands and agencies native video advertising that supplements Newsy's pre-roll and mid-roll video advertising.[8]
Move into television
In September 2017, it was announced Newsy would become a cable channel after its parent company, E.W. Scripps, acquired the carriage contracts of Retirement Living Television.[9][10] Cincinnati Bell Fioptics was the first provider to carry Newsy through fiber optics back in September of 2016.[11] Newsy network will carry programming aimed at millennials.[9] The initial cable providers for the network will be Comcast, Charter Communications and Altice USA from RLTV's distribution-agreements.[9]
