Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a film based on J. K. Rowling's fifth book of the same name in the Harry Potter series. The film is currently in production and being directed by David Yates. The screenwriter is Michael Goldenberg,[3] replacing Steve Kloves who wrote the screenplays for the first four films.[6] Warner Bros., the distributor of the film, has scheduled a North America and UK release date of July 13, 2007, both in conventional theatres and IMAX theatres.[1]

WB has also scheduled the first trailer to be released November 17th.[7]

Synopsis

Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts and discovers that much of the wizarding community is in denial about the teenager's recent encounter with the evil Lord Voldemort, preferring to turn a blind eye to the news that Voldemort has returned. Fearing that Hogwarts' venerable Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, is lying about Voldemort's return in order to undermine his power and take his job, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, appoints a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to keep watch over Dumbledore and the Hogwarts students. But Professor Dolores Umbridge's Ministry-approved course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards woefully unprepared to defend themselves against the dark forces threatening them and the entire wizarding community, so at the prompting of his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry takes matters into his own hands. Meeting secretly with a small group of students who name themselves "Dumbledore's Army," Harry teaches them how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts, preparing the courageous young wizards for the extraordinary battle that lies ahead.[2]

Filming locations

Confirmed locations

Filming rumours

  • Filming will take place in the UK, presumably in Alnwick and Gloucester where filming for the past four movies has taken place.
  • Apparently, Scotland's weather this year isn't snowy enough for the glorious magical backdrop of Hogwarts. This has led to further information regarding the fifth film being filmed overseas - which may be the case: it is rumoured that Scandinavia may soon be the replaced location
  • Producer David Heyman is considering doing some filming outside the UK. [58]
  • Director David Yates is hoping to film a sequence (Wizard Chase) on the River Thames and through the London Suburbs.[59]
    • Recent rumours have stated that filming has taken place at Butler's Wharf, near Tower Bridge in London, which would agree with Yates' above statement.[60]
  • Savona, Italy: filming was rumoured to take place around small medieval towns and castles. The rumour was subsequently debunked by Warner Bros.[61]

Confirmed scenes

The following scenes or plot elements have been confirmed to feature in the movie adaptation. Template:Spoiler

  • McGonagall's recovery, where she is in a wheelchair.[54] (picture)

Implied scenes due to casting

The following scenes, though not explicitly confirmed to feature by Warner Bros. or other associates of the film, are assumed to appear due to the casting of certain minor characters who would only appear in those scenes. The character(s) who would suggest the inclusion of the scene is (are) in parentheses.

Cut scenes

The following scenes or plot elements have been confirmed not to be in the movie adaptation.

Release dates

Warner Bros. has confirmed to fan sites that the film is scheduled to be released in stages, between July 11 and July 20, 2007.

Trivia and rumours

  • On February 5 2006, fan site Harry Potter Fan Zone received pictures of Robbie Jarvis (picture) and Susie Shinner (picture), the two unknown teens playing James Potter and Lily Potter, respectively. The authenticity of the Jarvis picture has been confirmed.[32]
  • The official theatrical teaser trailer will be released on November 17, attached to the Warner Bros. film Happy Feet.[7]
  • Composer Nicholas Hooper will compose music for this film[5], though Dario Marianelli was once rumoured by IMDb and fan sites to score the movie.[76] John Williams was also rumoured to return after his absence from Goblet of Fire, but he is only credited as the composer of the themes.
  • Miranda Richardson, despite speculation, stated she wouldn't be back and, David Heyman confirmed at a Goblet of Fire red carpet interview with The Leaky Cauldron that Rita Skeeter will not return.[47]
  • Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) beat over 15,000 hopefuls at the open casting when she won the role.[3] It has been stated by BBC Newsround that it took one reporter 15 minutes to walk from one end of the queue to the other - which shows the enormous amount of hopefuls who wanted the role.
  • Young Remus Lupin was rumoured to be played by Stuart Hastings though it was denied by WB that anybody is in negotiations on 2006-03-27.[77] On 25 May it was announced that James Utechin won the role and will play young Lupin.[12] Oddly enough, James Walters, who won the role of young Sirius Black, also tried out for the role of young Lupin.[11]
  • On 1 April, Helen McCrory, who was slated to play Bellatrix Lestrange, announced that she was three months pregnant.[78] On May 25 it was announced that Helena Bonham Carter would play the role.[12]
  • Harry's hair in this film instalment will be quite short, as seen in the image on the right, compared to his hair in the previous four films which progressively grew longer.
  • The film will be the third Harry Potter movie to be given a simultaneous release in conventional theatres and IMAX. [79]
  • The film may be released in 3-D.[79]
  • Robbie Coltrane, who plays Rubeus Hagrid, had finished filming his scenes as of July 15.[80]
  • The film is said to be darker than the previous four (although every Harry Potter film has been promoted as being darker than the last).[53]
File:Evanna as Luna.jpg
Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood in a studio still.
  • The Department of Mysteries battle was written three times because the screenwriters had trouble deciding Dumbledore's role in it.[48]
  • The family of Theo Walcott will make a cameo role in the film. Walcott himself was expected to appear as well, though his commitments to Arsenal forced him to pull out.[81]
  • The earrings Luna is wearing in the photo to the right were designed by Evanna Lynch herself.[66]
  • Grawp, Hagrid's half-gaint brother, will come into the life by a new technology, named as 'Soul Capturing', developed by Image Metrics. [82]
  • Originally, Warner Brothers set the Australian release date as September 6th, 2007, a whole two months after the majority of other release dates. However, after an uproar in the Australian Harry Potter community, including a petition[83] garnering 2,000 signatures, the date was pulled back to July 12th, 2007.
