Delta State is a state in Nigeria, named for the delta of the river Niger. It was carved out of the former Bendel State in 1991. The state has 25 local government areas. The capital city is Asaba. Warri is the biggest commercial city in the state. Other major towns are Agbo, Ughelli, Oghara, Sapele and Ogwashi-uku. The state Governor is Chief James Onanefe Ibori. The state's motto is "The Big Heart" and Igbo language is predominant. Delta is an oil producing state of Nigeria situated in the region known as the Niger delta. The Delta state government is however making efforts to diversify the state's revenue base from solely oil. Tourism and agricultural development have been receiving adequate attention in Delta State.

Delta State can be considered a miniature version of Nigeria, with various ethnic groups. Thus, it has similar problems associated with various ethnic differences. The state government has, however, managed to make peace between the warring groups in order to bring development to the various communities.
