Map showing areas of England and Northern Ireland which will hold an election in 2019 (cyan). Areas of England in white will not hold an election, those in light grey are other parts of the United Kingdom which again will not hold an election.

Local elections in the United Kingdom are scheduled to be held on Thursday 2 May 2019, contesting about 270 English local councils, six directly elected mayors in England, and all 11 local councils in Northern Ireland. Additionally, there will be by-elections for a number of local authority seats.

With the exception of those areas that have had boundary changes, the seats up for election in England were last contested in the 2015 local elections, and thus on the same day as the General Election from that year.

Voters

All registered electors (British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens) who will be aged 18 or over on the day of the election are entitled to vote in the local elections.[dubiousdiscuss]

England

In England, council elections are to be held in 33 metropolitan boroughs, 179 of the second-tier districts, 47 of the unitary authorities, as well as for five directly elected mayoral posts. Most English local councils will be holding elections, with the exception of eight unitary authorities, 13 non-metropolitan districts and boroughs, three metropolitan boroughs and the 32 London boroughs. Elections will also take place for most English parish councils.

Metropolitan boroughs

In 33 of the 36 English metropolitan borough councils one-third of their seats are up for election. Elections will not be held in Birmingham, Doncaster or Rotherham.

Third of council

In 49 English district authorities one third of the council is up for election.

Due to boundary changes, Reigate and Banstead has all out elections; thus all seats are up.

Daventry originally had elections scheduled for 2019, but the elections were postponed following a decision to merge the seven districts of Northamptonshire into two unitary authorities covering the county from 2020.
