Kajal Aggarwal (born 19 June 1985) is an Indian film actress and model. One of the most popular Indian celebrities, she has established a career in the Tamil and Telugu film industries and has been nominated for four Filmfare Awards South.[4][5][6] In addition to acting, Kajal participates in stage shows and is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products.

Kajal Aggarwal made her debut in the Telugu film industries and played her first leading role in 2007 in Teja's Lakshmi Kalyanam, alongside Kalyan Ram. In the same year, she starred in the box office hit Chandamama, which earned her recognition. The 2009 historical fiction Telugu film Magadheera marked a turning point in her career, earning her critical acclaim. It ranks among the highest-grossing Telugu films of all time and fetched her Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies including Filmfare.

She subsequently rose to prominence by starring in several critically and commercially successful Telugu films such as Darling (2010), Brindavanam (2010), Mr. Perfect (2011), Businessman (2012), Naayak (2013), Baadshah (2013), Govindudu Andarivadele (2014), Temper (2015) and Khaidi No. 150 (2017).[7] and established herself as one of the leading and highest-paid actresses in Tollywood. Kajal gained further recognition by featuring as the female lead in the high-profile Tamil projects Naan Mahaan Alla (2010), Maattrraan (2012), Thuppakki (2012), Jilla (2014),Vivegam (2017) and Mersal (2017) [8], and emerged as a leading actress in the Tamil cinema as well. Kajal Agarwal made her bollywood debut as a leading role in the movie about a police officer Singham, a Hindi remake of the same-titled 2010 Tamil film, opposite Ajay Devgn (2011), which was a blockbuster, while another film Special 26 (2013) was also declared a box office success.[9][10]

In 2020, a wax figure of Kajal Aggarwal was put on display at Madame Tussauds Singapore, making it the first of an actress from South Indian cinema.[11][12]

Early life

Kajal Aggarwal was born and brought up in a Punjabi family settled in Bombay (present-day Mumbai).[13] Her father Vinay Aggarwal, is an entrepreneur in the textile business and her mother Suman Aggarwal is a confectioner,[2] and also Kajal's business manager. Kajal has a younger sister Nisha Aggarwal, an actress in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam cinema,[14] who is now married to Karan Valecha (Managing director Golds gyms, Asia).

She studied at St. Anne's High School, fort and completed her pre-university education at Jai Hind College.[15] She pursued her graduation in mass media, with specialization in marketing and advertising, from Kishinchand Chellaram College.[15][16] Having harboured MBA dreams all through her growing years, she intends to achieve a post-graduation degree soon.[17]

Career

Film debut and struggles (2007–08)

Kajal Aggarwal made her debut in the Telugu film industry and played her first leading role in 2007 in Teja's Lakshmi Kalyanam, alongside Kalyan Ram. Later that year, she appeared in the Krishna Vamsi-directed Chandamama, which opened to positive reviews and became a huge success.[18] In 2008, she had her first Tamil film release, Perarasu's action entertainer Pazhani, co-starring Bharath. She had two more Tamil releases that year with Venkat Prabhu's comedy-thriller Saroja, in which she did a guest appearance, and Bharathiraja's investigative thriller Bommalattam. Although the former went on to become a commercial as well as a critical success,[19] both films failed to boost her career as her roles were too insignificant.[20] Her Telugu releases Pourudu and Aatadista opposite Sumanth and Nitin, respectively, did not receive positive reviews, but both were successful at the box office.

Public recognition and critical acclaim (2009–11)

Kajal Aggarwal had four releases in 2009. She first starred opposite Vinay Rai in the Tamil film Modhi Vilayadu, which garnered mixed reviews. She then appeared in the high budget Telugu historical drama Magadheera, alongside Ram Charan Teja, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, received universal critical acclaim, while Kajal Aggarwal, in particular, was praised for her portrayal of a princess. Kajal Aggarwal was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in Telugu and nominated for the award for Best Telugu Actress in the South Scope Awards for her performance.[21][22] It was highly successful commercially and broke several records,[23] emerging as the highest-grossing Telugu film of all time.[24][25][26] Magadheera's enormous success turned Kajal Aggarwal into one of the most sought-after actresses in Telugu cinema and catapulted her into the main foray of leading Telugu actresses.[27] It was released again in Tamil as Maaveeran in 2011, and was also successful at the box office.[28] Her subsequent releases Ganesh Just Ganesh, opposite Ram and Arya 2 opposite Allu Arjun received mixed reviews from critics, while her performance garnered positive feedback.[29][30]

Kajal Aggarwal's first 2010 release was A. Karunakaran's romantic comedy Darling, which featured her alongside Prabhas and received a favorable response, becoming a commercial success at the box office,[31] with Kajal receiving her second Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Later that year, Aggarwal appeared in the Tamil thriller film Naan Mahaan Alla, opposite Karthi, which was based on a real-life incident and opened to positive reviews.[32] It was a box office success. The chemistry between Karthi and Aggarwal was widely praised.[33] It was later dubbed in Telugu as Naa Peru Siva and became a huge success.[34] Kajal Aggarwal's final release in 2010 was another romantic comedy Brindavanam opposite Jr. NTR and Samantha, which received critical acclaim and went on to become a economic success,[35] while fetching Aggarwal the CineMAA Award for Best Actress.

In 2011, Kajal Aggarwal was paired with Prabhas for the second time in the romantic comedy Mr. Perfect, directed by Dasaradh. The film became a critical and commercial success. Kajal's performance as a conservative doctor and her chemistry with Prabhas was praised by critics.[36][37] Kajal received her third Filmfare nomination for Best Actress in Telugu for her performance.[38] In May, she appeared in Veera, replacing Anushka Shetty[39] and starring opposite Ravi Teja for the first time.[40] The film received moderate reviews.[41]

In July that year, Kajal Aggarwal made her Bollywood debut as a leading role in the police story Singham, a remake of the same-titled 2010 Tamil film, opposite Ajay Devgn.[42][43] It received mixed reviews from critics,[44] but the film was a blockbuster at the box office. She was nominated for two awards for her performance: the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut. Kajal Aggarwal finished 2011 with the Telugu film Dhada, opposite Naga Chaitanya.[45]

Commercial success (2012–14)

In early 2012, Kajal Aggarwal appeared in the Telugu gangster film Businessman, alongside Mahesh Babu, directed by Puri Jagannadh. A Sankranthi release, it opened to positive reviews and turned out to be a blockbuster.[46][47] Kajal Aggarwal's performance, though limited, was praised by critics.[48]

Kajal Aggarwal made a comeback to Tamil cinema later that year with two high-profile action flicks. The first was Maattrraan, directed by K. V. Anand and starring Suriya. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Her performance was well received; a review carried by The Indian Express summarised: "Kajal does with utmost sincerity as the foreign language translator Anjali. It's this trait and her graceful demeanour which makes Kajal a pleasant watch".[49] [50]}} The second was A. R. Murugadoss's Thuppakki, starring Vijay, in which she played the role of a boxer. It received mostly positive reviews from the critics and was a major commercial success, becoming the second Tamil film ever to collect over 100 crore (US$12 million).[51] Her final release in 2012 was the Telugu romance film Sarocharu, opposite Ravi Teja for the second time.[52] Although her performance was praised by critics, the film received poor reviews and did below-average business at the box office.[53]

In early 2013, Aggarwal starred in V. V. Vinayak's action film Naayak, opposite Ram Charan Teja and Amala Paul.[54] Upon release, it received positive reviews and was a major commercial success.[55] Also that year, she starred in the Hindi film Special 26, a heist drama directed by Neeraj Pandey. It went on to be a major critical and commercial success.[56]

She later appeared in Srinu Vaitla's Baadshah, opposite Jr. NTR for the second time in her career. Upon its release, critics appreciated her performance. The Times of India commented: "Kajal is as usual an eye-candy. She's got a good role and has done justice to her performance. Also she looks stunning in the songs."[57] The film was a financial success.[58] Her final release in 2013 was All in All Azhagu Raja, opposite Karthi, which released on Diwali.[59]

In early 2014, Kajal Aggarwal starred in R. T. Neason's masala film Jilla, in which she played a police officer. She then featured in a cameo appearance in the Telugu action thriller film Yevadu.[60] Her next release was Krishna Vamsi's family drama Govindudu Andarivadele, which released in October to positive reviews.[61] It grossed 416.5 million (US$5.0 million) at the box office and became one of the highest grossing Telugu films of 2014.[62]

Setback and recent work (2015–present)

Kajal's first release of 2015 was in the Telugu action film Temper, directed by Puri Jagannadh, alongside NTR Jr. The film received positive responses from critics and was a commercial success at the box office.[63][64] Kajal played an animal lover and on her performance.

Next, she featured in two Tamil films, working with industry-leading actors and directors. In July 2015 she was seen as an entrepreneur in Balaji Mohan's gangster comedy film Maari, opposite Dhanush.The film became an economic success. Her other release, Suseenthiran's action film Paayum Puli, alongside Vishal, received mixed reviews. She also did a cameo appearance in the bilingual romantic comedy film Size Zero.

The year 2016 saw Kajal appear in two high-profile Telugu films. She played the lead female role, marking her first collaboration with Pawan Kalyan, in the masala film Sardaar Gabbar Singh, directed by K. S. Ravindra. A reviewer from the Deccan Chronicle wrote: "Kajal Aggarwal plays the perfect princess and looks beautiful and elegant. In fact, she is a breath of air in the film".[65] The film grossed 90 crore (US$11 million) worldwide.[66] Her second Telugu release was Srikanth Addala's family drama Brahmotsavam, opposite Mahesh Babu.[67] Among the female leads, her performance as a "new age girl" was well received, despite the role having a limited screen time.[68] She next starred opposite Randeep Hooda in the romantic drama Hindi film Do Lafzon Ki Kahani. The film received moderate reviews.

In April 2016, she signed another Telugu film directed by Teja, starring opposite Rana Daggubati.[69][70] In June 2016, she signed for Vivegam, starring opposite Ajith Kumar.[71] In July 2016, she signed for the Telugu film Khaidi No. 150, starring opposite Chiranjeevi for the first time in his 150th film.[72][73][74]

In late July 2016, she signed to perform her first item number in Koratala Siva's Janatha Garage, featuring Mohanlal, Jr NTR, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen in the lead roles.[75] The shooting of the song took place in mid-August 2016.[76] That song, titled "Pakka Local", was well received by the audience.[77] Her next release, Kavalai Vendam, received mixed to positive reviews, but her performance was praised by critics.[78] In December 2016, she signed for Vijay 61, starring opposite Vijay.[79]

Kajal Aggarwal's first 2017 release was the Telugu-language action drama film Khaidi No. 150, starring opposite Chiranjeevi. It received mostly positive reviews and turned out to be a blockbuster.[80] Kajal Aggarwal's performance was praised by critics.[81] In January 2017, in a poll conducted by the Hyderabad Times, she topped the list of Most Desirable Women 2016.[82] [83] In 2017, she appeared in the Political drama Nene Raju Nene Mantri, as Radha Jogendhra, a loyal wife who acts as a morale balance to Rana Daggubati's character. Her performance received huge applause from both audience and critics. The movie was released into Tamil as Naan Aanaiyittaal, which received the same lover for her acting. She then appeared as lead female role in Spy action film, Vivegam, as Yazhini Kumar, a music teacher and loving wife of a spy. She got raves from the critics for her role and performance in Vivegam. She then portrayed the supporting role in Atlee's Mersal as a doctor, and featured alongside Vijay for the third time in her career and her performance received positive reviews while the film became one of the highest grossing Tamil films of 2017. Kajal is also seen in the most awaited Vijay 61 movie Mersal, which has received a great response.Mersal went on to join the 200 crore club.[84]

In 2018, Aggarwal had a leading role in the Telugu film MLA.[85] In April 2018, she signed to a Telugu film which also features Ravi Teja, marking her third collaboration with the actor.[86][87][88] She also starred in Awe, where she plays a troubled woman. Awe has won two national awards, 'Best Special Effects' and 'Best Makeup'. Kajal later bagged a role in Kavacham[89], a story about a young police officer who witnesses a kidnapping and ends up getting framed for it, he must race against time to find the real perpetrator to clear his name.

In 2019, She was seen in Comali, a movie about a man who awakens from a prolonged coma to learn that he's in his 30's and has missed 16 years of his life and how he learns to cope. Comali received positive reviews. Kajal reunited with director Teja for Sita[90], a story about a boy who awaits a girl named Sita after being left in a monastery by his uncle. She plays the role of Sita, an arrogant, selfish businesswoman who manipulates people for business improvement and money. Kajal was praised for the way she depicted her role in Sita. She was further seen in Ranarangam, a story about a kind-hearted gangster who finds it difficult to move on from the gang because of his enemies.

She is currently filming for her upcoming movies Mossagalu [91] directed by Jeffery Gee Chin(which is a Telugu-English bilingual film), the cast includes Vishnu Manchu, and Suniel Shetty in prominent roles; Mumbai Saga[92] with Sanjay Gupta (Director); Hey Sinamika, a Tamil Movie, with choreographer turns director Brinda starring Dulquer Salmaan and Indian 2[93] ( A Hindi film) with S. Shankar (Director), starring Kamal Hassan, Rakul Preet, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Siddharth, Nedumudi Venu, and Bobby Simha.

Brand endorsements

Aggarwal endorses a large number of brands. Before starting her film career, she had acted in commercials as a model.[17] Aggarwal represents Celebrity Cricket League as a brand ambassador.[94] She is the brand ambassador for Lux.[95] She endorses several retail and jewelry stores in south India — RS Brothers in Hyderabad, Sri Lakshmi Jewellery in Puducherry and AVR in Salem.[96][97] She has featured in television advertisements along with Karthi, endorsing Bru instant coffee.[98] She has endorsed mobile brands such as Samsung Mobile[99] and has featured in advertisements for the Secunderabad-based The Chennai Shopping Mall. In April 2012, Kajal was announced as the brand ambassador for Panasonic.[100] In 2013, Aggarwal was signed by Dabur as the brand ambassador of its hair oil brand DaburAmlaNelli.[101] She also endorses Green Trends, a leading salon brand in India.[102]
