Books & Bytes

Volume 1 Issue 3, December/January 2013

(Sign up for monthly delivery)

Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

Hi

Hi, im GenericBobJoe, you sent my IP address a warning for vandalism, the page that I apparently vandalized said the vandalism was in 2007. I got the computer with this IP last year, and I don't think teaneck is gay. I seriously do not know why this is happening. You should TempBan me from editing for now, maybe one day, and i'll see what's wrong with this computer. If this keeps happening,or if you might know anything about this, please reply. -GenericBobJoe

Saturday April 30, 1-6pm: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa @ Guggenheim
File:Monir Portrait-exh ph021.jpg

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Can’t join us in New York? Visit our global MENA Artists Month partnership page to coordinate international and online events as well.

Time: Presentation: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm, Edit-a-thon: 2:30pm - 6:00pm
Location: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue (88th Street), New York City, New York 10128
Guests should enter using the 88th Street entrance via the ramp at 88th Street and Fifth Avenue

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) ~~~~~

Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the museum, and/or as part of the online Wikipedia Asian Month contest!--Pharos (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bennetts in Crown Heights

Hi Alan, See page 4, 4th line down. The Bennetts lived at 698 St. Marks Avenue. Brian — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrianThibodeaux (talkcontribs) 14:06, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • BrianThibodeaux - See this source where Robert Bennett states "I was the first child of Nancy Walsh Bennett and F. Robert Bennett. Mother was a housewife and Dad worked for a bank. We lived at 698 St. Marks Avenue in what is now known as the Bedford-Stuyvesant section." Alansohn (talk) 14:14, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alan, I saw that. He is accurate about his address. I found the family living there in the 1940 census. But he simply got the section of Brooklyn wrong where his old house is located. 698 St. Marks Ave is clearly not in Bedford-Stuyvesant but within the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. See the second paragraph of the Crown Heights webpage: "Crown Heights is bounded by Washington Avenue to the west, Atlantic Avenue to the north, Ralph Avenue to the east, and Empire Boulevard/East New York Avenue to the south." Brian — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrianThibodeaux (talkcontribs) 14:29, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • BrianThibodeaux, looking at the address on a map, I'd agree that it's Crown Heights. Thanks for providing the details, as Bennett didn't mention Crown Heights anywhere in the book. Alansohn (talk) 14:54, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, *Alansohn. I am not sure who does what now? :) I've created a few pages and made some additions, but have not dealt with many issues like this. Do I (you) click the undo button? Please advise. Thanks, Brian — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrianThibodeaux (talkcontribs)

  • BrianThibodeaux, I added both Bennetts back to the Crown Heights article. I reinserted and expaned the reference with an explanatory note about the address and neighborhood. Thanks for adding these entries and for bringing the issue to my attention. Alansohn (talk) 11:49, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mayors of locations in New Jersey

Here are all the mayors of New Jersey that we have as positions at Wikidata. --RAN (talk) 00:52, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) only about 500 more to go. It's a nice start. Any ideas on expansion? Alansohn (talk) 00:59, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am working on automating it. These were just ones where we had at least three articles in Wikipedia for a mayor. Wikidata rules allow every political position to have an entry. --RAN (talk) 01:07, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), I don't know much about automating the Wikidata process, but I would love to learn and assist. Alansohn (talk) 01:24, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Winters (American football)

Bill Winters (American football)
Thank you for the editing job, However their is information that i can give you to make this more accurate. #1 The name of my high school is Monmouth Regional High School in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, #2 After Foot note #4 you deleted that I was named a starter you can refer to New York Times dated August 10th 1977 by writer Michael Katz where you see I made the roster, so if you can right after footnote 4 add He made the roster but then suffered a ruptured appendix... or what ever you fell is appropriate #3 We had two pictures in addition to the one that is up currently that you took down because you wanted to know who the photographer was so we had the photographer email you requesting for them to be put back up because you said we could. I was attempting to edit the page myself but the page was blocked from editing and if you can place the picture of me running out of the tunnel in Tampa which belongs in the "Professional Career section right before in 1983. The other picture is a picture of me in the water where the photographer emailed you letting you that She took the picture which goes right before 'Life after Football". This would be greatly appreciated and is very accurate you also might want to put that I was actually with the Giants from 1977-1978. Another article dated from Michael Katz from The New York Time titled "Kahl-Winter May Walk Into The Giants Starting Spot" Let us know if we can be of any help putting those picture back up and editing the way you see fit would be greatly appreciated.
 Bandit1455 (talk) 20:47, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Bandit1455, thanks for the updates. The Winters vs. Kahl-Winter name change created some challenges for me, but I will make best use of these sources to expand the article. Alansohn (talk) 20:53, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Any others?

  • [1] towns adjacent to towns with the same name, usually over a political split. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talkcontribs)
    • Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) Such as Andover Borough / Township, Berlin Borough / Township, Boonton Town / Township, Bordentown City / Township, Burlington City / Township, Chatham Borough / Township, Chester Borough / Township , Clinton Town / Township, Egg Harbor City / Township, Freehold Borough / Township, Gloucester City / Township, Hopewell Borough / Township, Lebanon Borough / Township, Mendham Borough / Township --- Audubon / Audubon Park, Barnegat Light / Barnegat Township, Englewood / Englewood Cliffs, Haddon Township / Haddonfield. Haddon Heights, the Cape Mays and Wildwoods. And there's more.... Alansohn (talk) 02:36, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will update them in Wikidata with the "not to be confused with property" We recently did something similar with doppelganger people that were born and died on the same day. Some were aliases of the same person, some direct duplicates, and most were just coincidental. Did you see the Mendham township woman complaining to Chris Christie about the non merger? --RAN (talk) 02:43, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? Christopher Collins

The reason you probably didn't find much under Christopher Collins is that the professional name (as well as his birth name) he uses is Chris Latta if you do a search on Google and Yahoo etc... using Chris Latta there are plenty of sources. YborCityJohn (talk) 16:12, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • YborCityJohn, I looked up all combinations and permutations -- "Christopher Collins", "Christopher Latta", "Chris Collins" and "Chris Latta" -- and could find nothing to connect him to Orange, New Jersey. What reliable and verifiable sources have you found? Without those sources, I'm not sure why the entry was added. Alansohn (talk) 16:18, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I received an automated message saying you had proposed a speedy deletion of this article. I went to the page to contest the deletion, but could not find the button usually found in such cases. May I presume you removed your proposal yourself?''Paul, in Saudi'' (talk) 09:35, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yahoo Sports Blog

Please stop trying to add the Yahoo sports blog as a reliable source. A better source already exists, but I'm telling you something you already know, as you're an experienced editor. The only possible reason I can see for you to keep reverting is some sense of "my version is better" without any factual basis; that smacks of WP:OWN, and I hope I'm wrong about this, because an editor making millions of edits hopefully wouldn't engage in behavior like that. Rockypedia (talk) 17:40, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rockypedia, both sources are appropriate and each provides different details. The source you're adding is already in the article. Alansohn (talk) 17:43, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw that, and made the appropriate changes. And no, a sports blog is not appropriate, especially when the blog is simply referencing the actual article which is already a source! Rockypedia (talk) 17:47, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As for WP:CITEVAR, see this RfC, which clearly established that vertical and horizontal cites can co-exist, as they are considered different styles, not different formats. Regardless, why would you use that as partial cover for including a blog when the actual reliable source is available, and all that's needed? Rockypedia (talk) 17:50, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Rockypedia, you've changed both WP:CITEVAR and WP:DATEVAR to reinsert your preferred format. I'm not sure what your edit war here is about, other than to impose your preferred style. Alansohn (talk) 17:57, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you really really need to have a horizontal format on that page, since it appears you think you own it, I really don't care to edit war about that. And change the date format, too, fine. But you should definitely be aware of that RfC, which it appears you weren't. The bigger point here is the blog as a source, and you using the CITEVAR and DATEVAR as some sort of distraction is ridiculous. Again, you've made millions of edits, and you know better than that. Then again, I now see you've also been blocked a few dozen times for petty arguments, so maybe this is in line with how you operate. I don't know. Just leave the blog out. Rockypedia (talk) 18:00, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Again, you said "violation of CITEVAR" in your edit summary. It's patently not a violation. Did you even bother to read this RfC? Rockypedia (talk) 18:04, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Rockypedia, I've dealt with abusive editors like you before. You know you're dealing with a genuine WP:DICK when the claims made are directly contradicted by the claimed source.
The RfC in question explicitly cites both WP:CITESTYLE -- "While citations should aim to provide the information listed above, Wikipedia does not have a single house style, though citations within any given article should follow a consistent style. A number of citation styles exist including those described in the Wikipedia articles for Citation, APA style, ASA style, MLA style, The Chicago Manual of Style, Author-date referencing, the Vancouver system and Bluebook." -- and WP:CITEVAR -- "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change.". Both of these guidelines explicitly contradict your claims. If your contribution to this encyclopedia is to violate policy and change citation formats, please help us all. For now, get lost and fight some other edit war to impose your bullshit preferences. Alansohn (talk) 18:32, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
